Bruderheim hotel closed down one day by AHS
BY JANA SEMENIUK
A lack of adherence to public health COVID-19 policy has prompted a wave of bar and restaurant closures across the province by Alberta Health Services including the Victoria Hotel in Bruderheim.
Owner Alan Dmyterko was surprised with visits from AHS, Occupational Health and Safety as well as Alberta Liquor Gaming and Cannabis on separate days the week before receiving his closure orders on Nov. 2.
“It was somebody that reported it to them,” said Dmyterko. “I had OH&S, AGLC and AHS coming down on me. All three of them. They wanted to know what's going on here.”
The orders state that dine-in services at the Victoria Hotel were closed due to allowing customers to dine indoors without verifying proof of vaccination or produce a record of a privately paid negative rapid test result taken within 72 hours of service, or documentation of a medical exemption for vaccination as well as customers not wearing a mask in the common areas and on their way to use the washrooms.
Dmyterko said that he tries to make sure everyone is checked, as per the province’s Restriction Exemption Program, but busy times are challenging due to being short staffed.
“I may have been in the kitchen when their representatives came in. There’s only one of us on at a time usually and it gets busy,” he said. “Then they said, ‘These guys said you didn't check them for their validation papers.’ And I said that I don't get everybody, is it a big deal? Well, apparently it is. They want everybody who comes in the door to be vaccinated because that's their protocol.”
Dmyterko’s sister, Liza, who helps at the hotel, expressed frustration at the seemingly double standard regarding AHS’ public health policy.
“They want everyone coming into the hotel to be vaccinated, but they don’t care if the people enforcing the rules (at the restaurants) are vaccinated or not,” she said. Lisa Glover, assistant director for Alberta Health Communications, confirmed by email that establishment workers are not required to be vaccinated.
“The restrictions exemptions program does not require staff to be vaccinated as that is an employer decision. Vaccine-eligible patrons must provide proof of vaccination, a negative test, or medical exemp-

being checked. Photo: Jana Semeniuk. tion to access a REP-participating entity. Employers can institute their own workplace vaccination policies, in line with their OHS obligations and in consultation with their legal counsel,” she said.
To date, the Victoria Hotel is the only establishment in Lamont County that has been closed for improperly checking for vaccine status.
Meanwhile, the hotel bar was allowed to resume operations the next day Nov. 3.
