Bullarama Supreme attracts record crowds JOHN MATHER The 25th annual Lamont Bullarama Supreme attracted record crowds on May 5 as sunny skies providing mild temperatures helped pull in campers and local visitors alike. “We had 400 more people than last year,” said Lamont Bullarama committee chair Rebecca Joseph. “The attendance was really awesome.” Twenty-five bull riders took part in the event, coming from across Alberta, Saskatchewan and B. C. There were also competitors from Brazil and New Zealand. The event also took a minute of silence to honour Grant Cossey, an instrumental member of the Agricultural Society, who had recently passed away. In the long round: Wyatt Laughlin of Lundbreck, Saskatchewan was first with a score of 83 on the bull Black Cadillac. Quesnel, B.C.’s Lane Cork was second with 81.5 points on a bull named Twenty-five; and Shane Perry of Delburne was third with 80 points riding Couch Potatoe. In the Canadian Championship round only Matt O’Flynn from Quesnel, B.C. scored points finishing first with 83 points on Done Talkin. O’Flynn also collected first place money for average with a score of 400 points. Second place went to Laughlin with 360 points, while Cork rounded out the top three in average with 320 points. In the total event money and points O’Flynn went home with first prize having won 700 points and collected $4,682 in prize money. Laughlin captured second in total event money with 560 points taking home $2,766. Cork finished in third with 500 points and took home $1,915 in prize money. Joseph reported more than 600 volunteers helped to ensure the bullarama went smoothly. She added KG Enterprises was a great help to the Society leading up to the event as they were able to fix and repair bleachers and make sure the bucking chutes were in top condition. She noted the Agricultural Society would be celebrating its centennial during the Summer Sizzler Rodeo to be held July 13-15.

Mundare residents bring flooding concerns to council JOHN MATHER Several delegations appeared before Mundare council, May 1 with concerns about a common cause flooding. “I need help with the flooding in my back alley,” said Mrs. Toni Siracky, who lives on 53 Avenue. “Every year this has gotten worse.” She felt the culvert may be collapsed or it’s not big enough. Her fence was under water and was rotting. “Something needs to be done,” she stated. “Either there has to be a new culvert or maybe the town could put in a
catch basin to drain the water.” Public works manager David MacDonald said if there was a catch basin at the corner it could be steamed regularly which would help with drainage. “I have a similar situation on my corner,” said Mayor Mike Saric. “I feel your pain.” Siracky said it happens every year and with the snow being moved onto her fence by public works it needs to be looked after. “It’s an ongoing thing,” she reported. “I can mark the fence so
people could find the culvert and steam it.” Public works said it’s an ongoing battle trying to stay on top of steaming culverts since they freeze again overnight. Water floods garage A second resident Mary Matwe thought she had an agreement with the town that could solve flooding issues near her 51 Avenue home. “I’m getting water in the garage every year,” she said. “They built a new home next to me and it’s higher and now the water comes in.” She said her basement

has a dirt floor and it’s starting to settle which she worries would damage the foundation walls. Colin Zyla, chief administrative officer for Mundare stated he wasn’t aware of any agreement with her, but if Matwe could produce her copy then the town would look into the situation. Matwe admitted she hadn’t thought of the agreement for years either, but she had recently come across it and hoped the town could help her. Zyla said he and MacDonald would meet with her in the next week to further look at the problem. The third group with flooding issues included Charlie Gargus, Royce Glembiski and Laureen Rees and issues on their properties along 55 Avenue near secondary highway 855. Gargus told council that many years ago a swale had been built in their neighbourhood and it drained into a nearby slough, but that slough “is now full.”
“There is no capacity left and it needs to be dredged or another option maybe to cut the ditch near the hospital and let water run a different direction.” Mayor Saric said he supported dredging the slough and putting in a catch basin, but it may be against environmental regulations. Glembiski had photos showing an estimated two feet of water in his yard because a culvert
was flowing backwards because the slough was too high. Saric said he felt they could dig out the slough and make it into a storm water retention pond that would solve the problem. He added with the new public works foreman, council was going to develop a plan which would see ditches being cleaned out on a regular basis that would help with flooding problems.

FROM WHERE I SIT
(Marion) Joseph Footz
Clock’s Tick, Tick, Ticking
BY HAZEL ANAKA Several years ago we made the move to Apple products. It began innocently enough with the purchase of our iPhones. Before long we got an iPad. Somehow it never really grew on me. It didn’t have a ‘real’ keyboard and had no WiFi capability. I never took a picture with it. I played spider solitaire and did not much else with it. Eventually I got a MacBook Pro that has served me well. Then I got a iMac desktop with huge monitor in part because I had big plans, in part because my eyes
need the larger size display. One slight problem. Because I was used to Microsoft products I had a helluva time getting used to the equivalent Apple programs. Microsoft Word equals Pages, Excel equals Numbers, PowerPoint equals Keynote. It was like a foreign language and at the time I guess my patience and commitment to learning this new thing was nil. So someone shared a copy of MS Office for Mac with me and for years I was happy. Oh, so happy. Not anymore. When I did my last iOS update I started getting messages saying that the particular “App is not optimized for your Mac. This app needs to be updated by its developer to improve compatibility.” From what I can gather old 32 bit applications would no longer be supported. So, like a good girl I do
a backup and think okay, I’ll buy the latest version of Office 365. Then I notice that the cheapest choice (about $80) is really just a one year subscription that expires (!) and is only good for one Mac. Now I’m confused and Annoyed with a capital A. If I understand this correctly I can buy the software outright for just over $300, again for only one Mac. Or I can subscribe for one year for about $80 each for two Macs. Or I can do nothing and watch everything slowly (or perhaps suddenly) disintegrate. Scary internet rumours say that if you don’t renew the subscription everything eventually disappears from the cloud or might open but won’t allow any other functions. In my little solo protest from a farm near Andrew, I decided to give Pages another
chance. If I can get to like and understand this word processing program I can tell Word to take their program and well, you get the idea. Except now I wonder what will happen to the thousands of files I’ve created over the years if I can no longer access them. Screwed. Another slight problem: what if the documents I create on Pages, Keynote and Numbers are not compatible with anyone on a PC? That was a real issue before and I can’t imagine it’s much better now. Not much use creating a document that no one can open or use. Have I mentioned how ticked off I am that I need to take time and brain cells and money to try to figure out what will work best for me? Plus the clock is tick, tick, ticking, from where I sit.
On April 26, 2018 (Marion) Joseph Footz, 75, passed away in the UA Hospital. He leaves to remember him in life his loving, devoted son Darren, his pride and joy, his wife of 40 years, Dianne, brothers-in-law Larry (Una) Schroter, Ron (Dale) Schroter, sister-in-law Gayle LaCasse, niece Jodi Caseley, uncles John and Dan Romanchuk, aunt Helen
Houlihan and several relatives. While in hospital, Joe was surrounded by many wonderful friends from Fort Sask., Josephburg,Andrew, and Sherwood Park. Our family is especially grateful for their support and the exceptional care and humanity of hospital staff. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Opinion Canada swings like a pendulum do There is a real socialist movement that has been coming on in Canada in recent years, and it has gained a foothold in the west (AKA British Columbia and Alberta). BC has been in the news lately for its temporary success in stopping an expanded oil pipeline from Alberta to the west coast, while hypocritically approving its own pipeline to bring in airline fuel from the US to Vancouver. Tree huggers, huh? The thing Albertans have to keep in mind is that people and businesses in BC don’t hate Albertans or their money. Many in BC are still capitalists. Unfortunately for them however, they have democratically elected a pro-socialist government in the NDP and its Premier John Horgan. Since elected about a year ago, Horgan’s big government beliefs have resulted in increased school taxes, an increased carbon tax, an upcoming speculation tax on secondary residences, an increase in corporate income tax, and an upcoming tax on properties valued $3 to $4 million. Although faintly disguised as a rich tax, it really isn’t. Increasing corporate tax means that businesses will increase prices or cut employees to transfer these costs to all consumers - and most of those are middle class. The tax on homes worth $3 - $4 million also seems like a rich tax, except if you have checked home values in Vancouver lately. Believe it or not, a home worth $250,000 in small town Alberta could fit into that multimillion dollar category in greater Vancouver where half of BC resides. Meanwhile in Alberta, the NDP government has now completed three years at the helm. It has brought on some good social programs in a historically right wing province prospering for decades through capitalism. But in its tenure, the NDP has also brought on some economic policies and taxes which have stunted growth. The great thing about democracy though is that although citizens might not always get their way, the pendulum only has the momentum to go so far left before it begins to swing right once again... and vice versa. That is what will happen in Alberta, eventually BC, and federally too. It is one of the things that make this country so great. Kerry Anderson
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Federal infrastructure spending a mess of delays, misguided priorities In 2015, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau’s government came into office on the promise of running small annual budget deficits of no more than $10 billion for three years. The promise was broken and the infrastructure plan has become a mess. The actual budget deficits are more than double the promised amount. The cumulative budget deficits from 2016-17 to 2018-19 total $55.3 billion, compared to the $25.1 billion in the Liberal Party’s campaign platform. Deficits during periods of economic growth are problematic because if the economy slows, government finances take a beating as tax revenues fall while spending on programs such as employment
insurance skyrocket. What happened? Part of the reason that only a fraction of Ottawa’s deficit spending is being spent on infrastructure is that the infrastructure spending plan has been plagued with delays. According to the most recent PBO report, Phase 1 of the plan, introduced in the 2016 budget, was intended to spend $14.4 billion on infrastructure projects, mostly in 2016-17 and 2017-18. But the government hasn’t identified where half of the $14.4 billion is being allocated. The government promised infrastructure spending to spur economic growth, but two years into its mandate it still doesn’t know how it will spend a significant portion of its Phase 1 budget –

The infrastructure spending plan has been the cornerstone of the government’s effort to improve economic growth. But it’s a plan likely doomed to fail due to chronic delays and spending on the wrong projects, that will do little – or nothing – to improve economic growth. Charles Lammam and Hugh MacIntyre

despite the fact that most of this spending was planned to be completed by now. But there’s a deeper problem with the government’s entire infrastructure plan, which is supposed to be rolled out over 11 years: the bulk of spending is on projects unlikely to spur economic growth.

Andrew School has visit from BBO On Monday April 23rd, Andrew School was visited by Head Biologist Kevin Methuen and Rickie the Saw-whet owl from the Beaverhill Bird Observatory. Students from kindergarten to grade 6 were educated on the 11 species of owls that reside in Alberta. The highlight for most students was having the opportunity to pet the owl after the presentation, many remarking at how soft it was! Having very soft feathers is characteristic of owls, enabling them to fly silently and surprise
Rickie the Saw Whet Owl
their prey. The Beaverhill Bird Observatory (BBO) is located near Tofield, Alberta, approximately 80 km east of Edmonton. They have been monitoring the birds that migrate through and breed in the Beaverhill Natural Area since 1984. The BBO is a not-forprofit, registered charity, the second oldest bird observatory in Canada, and has extensive longterm data sets dating back to inception. This data has, and continues to enable the BBO to track changes in bird populations, migratory routes, breeding success and survivorship. Their core programs are focused on monitoring migrating and breeding birds, environmental education, and acting as the designated steward of the Beaverhill Natural
Area. The Beaverhill Natural Area, in which the BBO is located and for which it is the steward, is a nationally and internationally recognized Important Bird Area. Naturalists utilize it as a bird watching area due to the diversity of observable bird species. More than 270 bird species have been reported, with 145 known to breed locally. In 1987, Beaverhill Lake was recognized as a wetland of international significance and was designated a RAMSAR site. In recognizing the importance of the habitat in this area, a provincial natural area was created around the lake. The Beaverhill Natural Area has many uses, some of which include research, education, recreation, and conservation.
A resident of the county snapped this picture taken at Twp Rd 560 and RR 163 on May 4. "There were 3,000 to 4,000 geese", said Joanne Roufosse.

Ella Andruchow celebrates a century of birthdays MAUREEN SULLIVAN Born May 2, 1918 just outside of Andrew Alberta, Ella Andruchow turned 100 on Wednesday. She has one son, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Ella, who is bright and happy and quick of mind, immediately knew that this reporter was fairly new as she had seen the byline change, she said. She was born in Zawali, a tiny place between Andrew and Wostock, and went to school in Zawali and then in Hilliard. When asked what she

She was known for having the nicest gardens in Mundare, with a green thumb she could keep anything growing including a poinsettia for six years. She also grew raspberries by the bushels. One of her favourite memories was a trip she

They visited five countries; France, Germany, England, Switzerland and Holland. She was excited to see the flower auctions in Amsterdam saying it was the most amazing sight. In her younger days while working at the Jasper Lodge in Japer Alberta she met the shoemaker to the Queen. "He was a little man surrounded by men in uni-
forms". Her granddaughters say that Ella is one of the hardest workers they know and will be cleaning her third or fourth chicken when everyone else is still on their first. She is also a hard core bingo player able to check multiple cards at a time. With a sarcastic wit that inspires her family, she is also very fair and open minded. Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column, and box. Each number can only appear once in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Alberta Party to establish local constituency association JOHN MATHER The Alberta Party will establish a new Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville constituency association in a meeting slated for May 14 in Bruderheim. “This change has been dictated by the new electoral boundaries,” said Jonathon Jacobs, the rural east organizer for the Alberta Party. He said he hoped to see 20 to 30 people out to the meeting.
“We decided to have the meeting in Bruderheim because we want to move our meetings throughout the riding so people don’t associate us with an urban party only,” he said. “We had our last meeting in Fort Saskatchewan.” He added the gathering will see a new constitution drafted, but doubted it would change much from the existing one. The current association has been pretty dor-
mant he stated and he hopes ,with a new leader in Stephen Mandel, it gets some momentum as the 2019 provincial election approaches. “This meeting will be a hectic one because it will essentially be two meetings in one,” he explained. “We will have a meeting to establish the constituency and then have a second meeting to elect a board of directors.” “We need to elect a
president and vice president as well as up to 15 members of the board,” he added. He doubted the meeting would choose a candidate for the upcoming election. “One thing at a time,” he said. “We’ll set up the association and go from there. We’re taking baby steps.” The meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the Motel Six in Bruderheim.
Volunteers keeping Alberta clean
SPRING CLEAN-UP Members of the Lamont Alliance Church were out cleaning the sides of Hwy 15 between Chipman and Lamont on Saturday May 5, along with many other community groups.
MAUREEN SULLIVAN Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 5 volunteers in orange safety vests were collecting trash along Alberta roads to raise money for community organizations. Volunteer organizations include 4-H clubs, Scouts, Girl guides, church organizations, sports teams, high school grad classes and other not for profit organizations. Organizations earn between $55 and $100 dollars, with more money going to this closer to urban areas as they tend to accumulate more trash. Last year the Alberta Government contributed about $1.1 million to 700 volunteer organizations involved in the highway clean-up.
