Cruising Car Show a big hit Patricia Harcourt Editor
The day was sunny and bright for the Cruising Car Show held last Saturday afternoon by the Viking Historical Society. People of all ages lined the streets to watch the giant procession of vehicles, also ranging from vintage to more contemporary in all kinds of colours. There were 41 cars, trucks, and emergency vehicles starting from the muster point at the Viking Carena Complex, but the long line that proceeded into town seemed much bigger and impressive. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that this was basically the only event to take place in Viking in over two months, with the COVID-19 pandemic restricting activities resulting in the cancellation of many of the town's expected festivities this spring and summer. There was also the factor of having so far a decidedly cold spring,
so last weekend's warmer and sunnier climates had everyone coming out to socialize - from a proper distance - and watch the parade of vehicles go past. Mike Lawes, President of the Viking Historical Society, was very pleased with the results as the vehicles winded up and down the local streets and people waved from their lawns and sidewalks. The show was designed "to break the monotony of staying home every day and because a lot of activities happening in Viking have had to be cancelled," he said. He credited the idea for the show to society member Clint Nearing, also a town councillor. "It was Clint who brought it up as a way to have an event and still have the proper social distancing," he said. The show appeared to wake up the townspeople, many of whom remained outside and spoke to friends and neighbours they usually don't see in this time of shutdowns and social distancing.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ADOPTION OF THE BEAVER COUNTY AND STRATHCONA COUNTY INTERMUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN (IDP) BEAVER COUNTY BYLAW 20 -1080
May 20, 2020, 9:00 a.m. Beaver County Service Centre in Ryley Beaver County is considering the following Road Closure: Plan 146 E.T in NW 30-48-14-W4 (0.808 ac) Beaver County Bylaw 20-1078 (Hamlet of Bruce)
Beaver County and Strathcona County wish to adopt an Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP) to address future land use, transportation and infrastructure, environment, economic and social development, and responsible intermunicipal coordination. This collaboration will ensure that land use decisions within the IDP area are thoughtfully considered and that potential land use conflicts are minimized through the work of communication and coordination between the Counties. The draft IDP has been developed using the existing policy areas of both municipalities’ Municipal Development Plans (MDPs), and as a result the proposed IDP will not affect existing land use zoning.
A Public Hearing has been scheduled by Beaver County for Council to consider arguments for and against the proposed road closure. The public hearing will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at 9:00 am. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Government of Alberta has enacted the Meeting Procedures (COVID-19 Suppression) Regulation pursuant to Order in Council 50/2020 to permit the hearing to be conducted electronically rather than in person. The hearing has been structured so that all who wish to participate will have the right to hear all discussions and speak for or against the road closure. For information regarding the public participation process and how to provide input on this matter, go to www.beaver.ab.ca/council/public-hearings.
