Tighter restrictions announced late Tuesday by province Schools K-12 will move to online learning until at least May 25 The Province has instituted new broad measures to stop the spike of COVID-19 cases in the province.

Premier Jason Kenney announced late on Tuesday, that effective Friday, May 7, all Kindergarten to Grade 12 students will move to at-home learning until Tuesday, May 25, after the long weekend.

Kenney said there are presently 80,000 Alberta students and staff in self-isolation that were already stressing many school divisions to make this move.

“This two week reset will allow students to return to classrooms to the end of the year.”

Effective immediately, any workplace with a COVID-19 outbreak will be mandated to close operations for 10 days, with exemptions for critical workplaces.

All post secondary institutions will move online.

Retail stores may now only have up to 10 per cent of their fire code capacity or five people, whichever is higher.

Outdoor social gatherings are now restricted to five people, and it is strongly recommended that only two households or cohorts meet in this manner.

Places of Worship, formerly limited to 15 per cent of building fire code capacity, is now limited to 15 people, total.

Funeral services have been reduced to 10 people total.

Effective 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, all personal wellness, hair salons,

tanning salons, nail salons, and others in this group must close for the next three weeks.

All in-person restaurant, pub, or bar dining, indoors or outdoors, is prohibited, all restaurants must move to takeout or delivery only, for three weeks.

Outdoor sports and recreation will be limited to households and close contacts only.

Youth and adult performance will close.

“Today we have 671 people in hospital with COVID-19, 150 of whom are in intensive care. We also have to treat non-COVID patients, meaning that there are a total of 226 Albertans in ICU right now. That’s far more than the total number of ICU beds that we would have available in a typical year, in our health care system.

“AHS has worked hard to develop surge capacity. If pressed, we can open 425 ICU beds, but, would require mass cancellation of other surgeries that people are counting on.

“If exponential growth of COVID-19 continues, it would begin to push the outer limits of even our surge and expanded hospital capacity within weeks.

“Let me be clear. We will not permit our health care system to be overwhelmed. We must not and will not force our doctors and nurses to decide who gets care and who doesn’t.

“That is why we must act now to stop the spike.”

Kenney said the new measures will be province wide with the exception of a very few communities that have very low levels of spread. He closed with what he called one simple message, “If you can stay home, please stay home, at least over the next three weeks.”

Scholarship This is a $500 scholarship presented annually to three students from each of the Flagstaff High Schools, the Scholarship is open to current and former students of Daysland, Sedgewick and Forestburg Schools.

Eligibility Students must show an interest in work in Human Services (a professional who acts as an agent to assist and or empower individuals, groups, families and communities to prevent, alleviate or better cope with crisis, change and stress to enable them to function more effectively in all areas of life and living) or Community Development (seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing these groups with the skills they need to affect change in their own communities). Students must have attended High School at Forestburg, Daysland or Sedgewick Schools. There is no age restriction on this Scholarship, adult students can apply as long as they attended High School in Flagstaff. Students must present a successful admission to a Post-Secondary Institution to receive payment of scholarship.

So many great things to mention this week. Please forgive me for venturing outside Sedgewick for them.

It's mental health week and the Daysland, Killam and Rosalind United Churches are kicking it off with a wellness challenge. It's open to anyone to join in. With the pandemic going on longer than we could have ever anticipated I think it's very important to look after yourself and mental well-being. Aren't we all a little fatigued by it?

Let's bring back some joy for the summer month.

Goals can be as simple as drinking more water, moving your body for 30 min a day, reading in the bible or whatever else

you'd like to include in your daily routine. Worth checking it out and you will feel a difference in your well being.

Hardisty and community are encouraging people to check out the trails all around the town for mother's day weekend.

You might even be lucky enough to find a coloured rock with a number. This means the mom of the family qualifies for a gift.

Please only take one numbered rock per family. I thought it's a fantastic idea and definitely worth the mention. A lot of hard work has gone into making these walking trails and it's only fair to explore and enjoy our local backyard. Nature does wonders for our mental well being. I love my daily walk.

Town wide garage sale weekend is upon us. Killam is having theirs on May 7 and 8, if you'd like

to go shopping.

Sedgewick is on May 14, 15, and 16. Register with the Town office and you will receive a garage sale kit which includes balloons, signs, stickers, and advertising on their website as well on the printed map which will state your location and opening hours for everyone's shopping convenience.

Deadline is May 12.

The Sedgewick Minor Ball Association is bringing a development camp to town. Make sure to register early as there's only limited spots available. The camp will have a strong focus on the core skills. Non members are welcome. Take advantage of learning from some highly qualified coaches.

Camp is for ages eight and up.

Wavy Lake 4-H Club cleans hamlet of Strome Claire Stefanishion Club Reporter

On May 6, 2021, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. the Wavy Lake 4-H Club will be doing a town clean up in Strome. The club will be doing this for their community service activity for the 4-H year.

They will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the food

bank. Donations from community members would be greatly appreciated. The 4-H Club will have a trailer set up on main street Strome where non-perishable food items can be dropped off.

If you are in town and driving by and see a 4-H member cleaning up, give them a honk and a wave hello!

Social media “quizzes” can leave you wide open to breaches Leslie Cholowsky Editor

We’ve all hit that point in the road where our brains can’t remember another thing, like the password for our email account. So what do we do?

We just hit ‘reset my password,’ and punch in a new one.

Often; however, there are security questions we’re asked first, to verify our identity. Questions that only we know the answers to.

What random stranger would guess that my first dog’s name was “Mac”?

Well, unfortunately, many people are voluntarily giving up the answers to most common security questions without even realizing it.

We’ve all seen them, and many of us have taken part in them. Popular social media ‘quizzes’ that have you answering those questions without even realizing that it’s not just some game, it’s a fishing, or phishing, expedition; data mining hundreds of accounts.

RCMP say many social media quizzes are designed to get those answers. “Be careful what you reveal about yourself online.”

In the worst cases, criminals can use online quizzes to plant malware or steal personal information. In a recent example, Ukrainian hackers lured over 60,000 Facebook users to take online quizzes that installed malicious extensions in their browsers.

The data-scraping extensions then secretly sent those users’ profile information and friends lists to the hackers.

Information like this often becomes fodder for further crime such as phishing campaigns or impersonating people in online scams.

In another case, a survey about concert attendance was used to gather answers to common security questions used for financial and other accounts.

If you’ve ever had people tell you they received a second friend request from you on Facebook, that harmless “quiz” you took may have been the culprit.

Even legitimate quizzes often gather information that can be used to barrage users with targeted advertising.

Next time you see a popup or banner ad for a social media quiz, look at the fine print. They typically say that by participating, you are agreeing to the social media site’s terms of use.

Experts who develop anti-virus software say: “Phishers have now learned to exploit game mechanics and further tap into people’s curiosity and desire for freebies. In the process, phishers have made Internet users receptive to them, without users realizing it.

“While it may be fun to waste time on quizzes a contact happens to have shared on Facebook, it would be wise to give it a pass, and perhaps warn the poor fellow via PM that he might have been duped to give up his personal information to scammers.”

The following are tips for avoiding social media scams: •Be skeptical: Before answering a quiz, figure out who created it. Is it a brand you trust? Just because something appears to be fun and innocent, doesn’t mean there isn’t an inherent risk.

• Adjust your privacy settings: Review the social media account’s privacy settings and be strict about any information that is shared - and be mindful of who you are sharing it with.

• Remove personal details from your profile: Don’t share information like a phone number or home address on social media accounts.

• Don't give answers to common security questions online: Be cautious if the questions in a quiz ask for things like your mother's maiden name, the street you grew up on, previously owned vehicles, favourite foods, or the name of your high school.

• Monitor Friend Requests. Don't accept friend requests from people you don’t know. Also be wary of a second friend request from someone you are already connected with; the second profile may be an imposter trying to access your data and your Friends list.

Cyber-related fraud accounts for nearly 30 per cent of all fraud reports and 40 per cent of all fraud losses. Even so, it’s estimated that only five per cent of victims report it.

Security experts also recommend using a strong, unique password for each of your accounts, and not to use the same password on different sites or accounts.

Change your passwords frequently.

Experts recommend doing so every three months.

“This ensures that if a password is compromised, the time that a cybercriminal remains inside the hacked account is relatively short."

Proud of the 4-H members in Flagstaff County What a great service to the community occurred over the weekend, as Flagstaff 4-H members and other volunteers participated in the annual Highway Cleanup on Saturday, marking the beginning of May. It’s great to have such committed citizens in our region, especially at such a young age. What a great way to demonstrate civic responsibilities.

Unfortunately, though, what they had to do on the weekend is clean up after those who should know a whole lot better.

Illegal dumping seems like it never really goes away, as many in the rural areas deal with it year after year, season after season.

Where do people get the idea that if they don’t want something anymore, or are too lazy to get their garbages out in time for pickup, that a rural landowner would be happy to take it off their hands?

It’s not just garbage, it’s old appliances, old machinery, toys, TVs and couches, and even in some cases, huge chunks of wood and branches from tree trimming.

There are places for disposing of these kinds of things, and there’s no excuse for dumping garbage on anyone’s land. If you got it that far, surely you could have taken it a little further, to the landfill or your local transfer site.

If you don’t want to pay the very reasonable small fee charged by the transfer sites, take it to the main landfill. Why should the landowner have to pay to dump your garbage? What do you think happens to it once you’ve dumped it by the side of the road, or backed into a bush and dumped it out?

Is it truly a case of out of sight, out of mind?

Same goes with throwing it out the window of a vehicle. The great outdoors isn’t one giant trash container!

And throwing out garbage is one thing, too, but throwing used masks out the window is just plain gross.

Who doesn’t have a garbage bag in their vehicle?

Forestburg students get a refresher in bicycle safety Leslie Cholowsky Editor

During the afternoon of Thursday, April 29, organizers held a Bicycle Safety Rodeo in Forestburg.

Tara Sieben and Flagstaff County Emergency Services Coordinator Kim Cannady organized the event, inviting Killam RCMP Constable Jake Rains and Constable Nick Daigle.

The students received a safety talk to start things off.

Safety tips included proper helmet fit, where to ride, hand signals, and intersection safety. Students then rode through an obstacle course a few times each to practice what they learned. Cannady says all elementary classes from Grade 1 through Grade 6 participated, with lots of smiles afterwards.

The hat came back; I thought it was a goner, but the hat came back. All three hostesses have matching hats as part of a costume. The Shake Off Winter train run went on a windy day and, just as I was coming out of the ca-

boose, a gust of wind grabbed my hat and took it under the moving train.

I thought it was gone. Two weeks later I was at the station to replace three hats and there, on the chair, was the hat.

I had a chat with Mary Lockwood. Every time I clean my cat's water bowl I think of her, so I thought I would call her.

This weekend I was able to move more stuff in the garage sale.

Flagstaff conducts vehicle inspections Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski conducted the County’s annual spring farm vehicle inspection day on Thursday, April 22, at the UFA parking lot in Killam.

Zelinski says, “We try to do this early in spring so for some of the farm trucks that have been sitting for a while we can have a look at them and make sure they are safe to be on the road for seeding.”

He says they usually see between six to eight trucks as part of the voluntary program.

“This year we saw less possibly due to weather, however, in conjunction with other commercial vehicle inspectors from the Alberta Sheriffs and the M.D. of Provost, we also conducted multiple inspections on random commercial vehicles.”

Zelinski says, “The inspections conducted are North American standard inspections through the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).

“Items checked on one of these inspections include lights, tires, driveline, brakes, steering, and suspension.

“Vehicles that pass inspection receive a CVSA decal which is recognized nationwide, and ensures that the vehicle will not be inspected again for three months, unless an obvious safety issue is observed.”

If a vehicle does not pass the inspection, he says it would receive a “require attention” notice or, depending on the violation, an “out of service” notice.

The latter needs to have repairs completed before being allowed to continue. A ‘require attention,’ is less severe, vehicles are allowed to continue on and fix the issue before their next job or trip.

Zelinski says one vehicle brought in as part of the voluntary program required attention due to

an issue with a brake.

“The issue was promptly rectified. Also, vehicles brought in as

part of the voluntary program will not be issued fines that may otherwise be issued on a random

roadside inspection.”

The free farm truck inspections are an initiative of Council.

Firefighters contain Forestburg house fire and rescue family pet

Just after 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 2, Forestburg and Galahad Fire Departments were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the Village of Forestburg.

Fire Chief Kevin Lunty says the fire was contained to the residence and no injuries were re-

ported.

He says fire crews were able to find, rescue, and resuscitate a cat in the house, as well as salvage some important belongings.

The cause of the fire is presently unknown, says Lunty.

Councillor Rick Manning made a motion to leave the policy as it is, allowing the new Council to review it on their own after the fall election, also confirming a Reeve salary of $43,091 annually, and councillor salary at $39,174.

Rural Roots 4-H Multi-club holds first-ever ‘drive by’ Achievement Day at Lougheed Trout Pond Leslie Cholowsky Editor

It’s not surprising that an organization devoted to clear thought, loyalty, service, and better living would be resilient enough to thrive during a world-wide pandemic.

Flagstaff 4-H Beef Clubs showed it last year, and this year, the Rural Roots 4-H Multi-Club dug deep and came up with the novel idea of a drive-through Achievement Day. They held it Saturday, May 1, after spending on the morning on Highway Cleanup, at the Lougheed Trout Pond.

The Rural Roots 4-H Multi Club met this year through Zoom meetings, except for one in-person meeting. They have eight members, and leaders Janet Niehaus, for sewing; and Lisa Burgess, for cooking.

The members had a busy year, starting with a bottle drive. In November, they made their own pin cushions, and learned how to read a recipe and make pretzels.

In December, meetings moved online.

Members made masks to donate to seniors, and started their apron projects.

In January, they held a quilting workshop with Holly Bovencamp, and decided to submit public speaking videos. Their final sewing project was a quilting project, and in cooking, learned how to make healthy snacks.

In February, the group decided to participate in the Highway Cleanup for May, continued their sewing projects, and learned how to make Banana Nut bread or sunflower cookies.

In March, they completed their record books, and decided to hold their Achievement Day outside at the Lougheed Trout Pond. In April, they decided to make it a drive-by event due to COVID restrictions.

Club members are President Sloane Butcher, Vice-President Aspen Borgel, Secretary Breena Burgess, Treasurer Halle Borgel, District Reporter Liberty Borgel, Club Reporter Mackena Hayes, Rylee Johnson, and Sophie Backen.

Local 4-H club members showing civic pride on Highway Cleanup day

The Hastings Coulee 4-H Club had 12 members cleaning up, with each family working as an individual cohort group. Bill and Lexi Dietrich (left-inset) werenʼt thrilled with finding used masks along the highway.

Saturday, May 1, was Alberta’s annual Highway Cleanup Day, and local 4-H club members, and their parents, could be seen all around Flagstaff County’s primary and secondary highways with their safety vests and bright orange bags.

Three clubs sent us photos, including Hastings Coulee (above and left), Iron Creek 4-H Beef Club, (middle), and Golden Prairie 4-H Multi-club (bottom right). Also busy were the Rural Roots 4-H Multi-club, near Lougheed, who later held a drive-through achievement day. The Wavy Lake 4-H has a town-wide cleanup scheduled for this Saturday, in Strome, where they will also be accepting donations for the Flagstaff Food Bank.

Alberta Transportation and 4-H Alberta started this program back in 1977. The province supplies the vests, signs, gloves, and the garbage bags. Filled bags are placed on the edges of the highway shoulders, then picked up by maintenance contractors, like Emcon. Last year’s clean up, the 43rd annual, didn’t take place until September, but netted 32,000 bags across the province, from 11,986 volunteers.

The Iron Creek 4-H Beef Club had 14 members and 14 parents out Saturday. They cleared seven miles on Highway 36, north of Killam.

Golden Prairie 4-H Multi-club had 18 participants come out on Saturday. They cleaned along Secondary Highway 856 between Township roads 422 to 442.

Doreen was predeceased by her mother and father Edwin or Eddy and Hazel Fossen, her first husband and love of her life, Dallas Ray Bowersock, her second husband Ev Oberg, brother Keith Fossen, her uncle Bud and aunt Irene Tull, in-laws Les and Myrid Bowersock, Bill and Jean Bowersock, nephew Donald Bowersock, and many other relatives and friends.

These past few years she was not always feeling her best, but when asked how she was doing Mom would respond by saying “Sameold, same-old!” Never complaining of the aches, pain, or sickness. Now when asked how he’s doing, her great-grandson also responded with “Same-old, same old.” I guess he’s heard it a few times.

While telling family and friends I’ve had a great life and three wonderful children “Thank you, like really thank you very much.” It truly shows your devout faith and strength, being widowed at 47, taking over a family business that really was not your thing, returning to university so that you could continue as an educator whilst being the rock of our family.

Mom’s extended family were those she lived with at Big Knife Villa, man we were lucky and so was she!

A staff like no other; we are

so thankful for the home you provided her and her family. She considered herself spoiled.

Once I was told if you’ve had a great love and relationship, you’d never forget them, but you would likely have love again and so she did, thanks to you our children had someone to call grandpa.

Our children and grandkids are truly the lucky ones.

We loved to hear you boast or brag about each and every one of them. Did you know Doreen’s great-granddaughter got 100% on her Grade 11 exams? Setting the bar a little high.

In the dictionary if you look up the word volunteer it just might say Doreen, well at least it does in ours.

Mom worked on many community projects. The most important project Mom worked on was a committee to fight for the opening of the Galahad Health Centre.

Hard work and dedication prevailed. She was a member of many groups and charities. To name a few: Library Board, Tutor to many, the U.C.W., a member of the order of Eastern Star for 64 years, Galahad Auxiliary,

Secret Santa to many less fortunate, Bar Harbor Camp Board Member and councillor, community enhancement foundation, and many more. Doreen's commitment to her community was huge Everyone between the ages of 25-65 probably had that substitute teacher!

Sorry mom your family were not always that pleased! Also known as Grandma D to so many of the community. One of her favourites stated after watching Grandma D pick up litter everywhere she went. That young girl says she has never littered again!

You truly had an impact!

She also had a slow pitch team named after her “Drunk at Doreen’s“ surprised? So was she. Over many years she had either given a place to sleep to many and fed them all. And did you know there were no ball caps at her table. Except for one daughter.

50 some years of Thursday night poker, (or money management) with numerous friends and probably down 2$ overall.

Mom had many lifetime friends; like really good friends. And has lost many.

mom's life was harder than she would ever admit.

While we know she wasn’t perfect and sometimes that verbal filter did slip, we love her and will truly miss her.

She is now free from pain and with the many that she loved so dearly. All my love.

Donations in memory of Doreen may be made to the Bethel United Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Big Knife Villa, Galahad Auxiliary, Forestburg Community Enhancement Foundation, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

You know who you are.

They all knew if you went with Doreen you might be the last one to leave or at least until the last dish was done. She had many relatives that she considered best of friends and has kept in touch with most.

Along with her many great friends she was blessed to have her late brother Keith and sister-inlaw Eva who took her under their wing and never left her on her own. Thank you from the bottoms of hearts, Eva and girls. As you also know

Hi everyone, as I’m sitting here typing up the news the sun is shining and it’s not warm out.

Maybe if it would warm up for a day or two we might get a nice rain, which we sure can use. It would help to clean everything up and maybe wash some winter dust off the windows. So keep praying for rain. I know some of the farmers have just started seeding and probably don’t want the rain just now, but I think it will just soak down.

It’s too early to plant any garden yet, but the greenhouses are starting to open their doors, cool or not.

Last weekend my daughter, her hubby, and I were the first customers at the greenhouse east of Forestburg. The flowers were beautiful, just made one get that itchy feeling, but it’s a little too early unless you have a special place to keep them. I’m sure looking forward to that; don’t know how much planting I’m going to be able to do, not much I’m thinking.

It’s so nice to have daylight until nearly 9:30 p.m. now, it makes for a much longer day and, of course, the kids don’t want to go to bed so early so you are able to get a little more

work done outside and etcetera.

Lovely appointed as member of Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Jackie Lovely, MLA for Camrose, was recently appointed as a member of the Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society.

She received notice of her appointment at the end of April.

In that notice, Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Community and Social Services, says, “The Council is part of the Government of Alberta’s commitment to ‘harness the power of civil society’

to help address social challenges.

“This commitment builds on Alberta’s rich tradition of volunteerism, charitable giving, and communities coming together to solve problems.”

Sawhney adds, “I am confident that as a member of the Council you will effectively engage civil society organizations and provide advice to government on how to strengthen civil society’s capacity to support Albertans in need.”

Lovely says, “I plan to

meet with our local stakeholders and look forward to rich conversations. I’m glad our UCP Government is taking care of vulnerable women.

“Now that I have been appointed to the council it will give me a chance to learn what we need to do to continue to help women in our Province!”

Lovely adds, “This is the Minister’s team, and we are appointed by the Premier. I am humbled and honoured to have the opportunity to do this important work on behalf of the Province.”

Hello folks; this is a glorious Monday morning. I see the green grass trying to peek through the dead grass and the trees are starting to leaf out. For many farmers these are nature’s signs that seeding can be started.

Our Hardisty Library Board Members are busy selling our Mother’s Day raffle tickets. We are 90% sold-out so get your ticket for a toonie and get a chance to win $1,000. The draw date is May 6.

I was trying to fill my pages so I decided to cruise the countryside and visit a few neighbours that agreed that I can stop in.

My first stop was Lana Love’s farm. She greeted me outside all masked-up and social-distanced and generously bought a number of tickets. I asked about family and she updated me.

Her brother and sister-inlaw Donna and Ray Harris are both retired and still enjoying living in Red Deer.

They used to live at Fish Lake. I worked with Donna, a Home Care Nurse, and Ray used to be a Sedgewick high school teacher. Ray actually taught Lana when she went to high school.

Their daughter Carmen and family live in Calgary so visiting is not too far away.

Their son lives in California.

Lana and Barry’s oldest son Steven is a heavy equipment operator and works all over Alberta and BC. I follow all his fantastic photography on Facebook that he takes when he is sledding in the mountains or trying to cook with his young daughter Pyper.

Daughter Stacy and hubby T.J. have two sons and live in Tofield. Stacey has pursued an interesting career as a millwright, not a commonly female job, but she aced it and loves it.

The youngest boy Steven and his wife Krissy have two kids and live up in Fort McMurray. He is a heavyduty mechanic.

Next I stopped in at Dagwood’s Auto and Diesel repair. He greeted me with a mask and joyfully purchased 10 tickets.

I was in heaven. His wife Daphne still works as a nurse. Thank you essential service worker! Their chil-

dren have flown the nest, two boys and a daughter in BC. My next neighbours were Lorne and Susan Korth. My goodness, I received tremendous support. Tickets were purchased for daughter Melissa and husband Darcy. They have two children. Son Chad, who has one son. Susan’s mom Mrs. Cromarty from Camrose supported the library also. She and husband Dale used to live in Hughenden.

Isn’t this amazing, such generosity?

My final telephone call was to our friend Henry Hays. He is always full of jokes and laughter and agreed to generously purchase the last few tickets.

Hardisty has a fabulous little gem on main street called the “Hardisty Thrift Shop.” It is run by volunteers from the Catholic Guild and the United Church Women.

I am on of the volunteers who thinks the shop is a little bit of heaven. Every Tuesday a group of dedicated ladies meets to sort the donated bags and boxes. It’s like Christmas every Tuesday. There is that air of excitement as you open a box, move the newspaper filler, and gaze down at your surprise! I was thrilled to find five vintage coats and jackets. They were nice and clean and had been well taken-careof. I did not recognize the

lady who dropped them off; had these belonged to her husband, her brother?

Was she a caretaker of this elegant gentleman? We will never know, but we will certainly sell the coats.

What we do not sell gets sent to Edmonton for someone else to enjoy.

My friend gifted all her mother’s immaculately clean Alia and Tan Jay clothing and a box filled with a wonderful variety of scarves. This lady even had matching costume jewelry for each outfit, but that was given to family members.

On a rare occasion we have been surprised to find a mouse nest in the bottom of a big boot or a pair of skates, but nothing alive; thank goodness! I just despise mice, they make my skin crawl.

Another huge bag was full of children’s clothing.

Little people grow out of their clothing so quickly so it’s worth it to check out our variety of pristine clothing.

Just wait for the first rainstorm and moms come looking for rain pants and rubber boots. We aim to please and our shop windows will display seasonal clothing and cute items to encourage you to come in and shop.

Our men’s section is visited by quite a variety of men. We often sell a multitude of t-shirts and hoodies.

Workers love to purchase clothing that they can wear till it is worn out and then toss it.

Our ladies section always had a big turnover of wonderful clothing and we even

have a matching 1x-5x rack for the voluptuous babes.

One interesting story is when a gentleman and lady came in, desperate that they couldn’t find clothing to attend a sudden funeral. The volunteers dressed the gentleman, found a shirt, suit, tie, and the same for his brother and the lady. All in a day’s work for our volunteers.

There was another unique find when the workers discovered a cookbook that was compiled by a gentleman. Each recipe had a story attached to it about the person donating the recipe and their family history. The ladies didn’t have the heart to toss it, so one of them did some research and tracked down the owner of the cookbook to return it to him. Great story!

Our clientele are varied and, the other day, a bearded senior gentleman came in to peruse our treasures. We chatted and I informed him that my home was not always Hardisty, but that I grew up in Niagara on the Lake Ontario. He perked up because he had a lady pen pal from that area years ago.

Of course I didn’t know her name, but we chatted about that area and the fruit farms and wineries versus our expansive grain and cattle farms. I did not make a sale, but I’m sure he will be back, such an interesting man. Never a boring day at the Hardisty Thrift Shop, come on down.

In the Field with Harry: Get the most from your pastures

Every spring there is a strong temptation for livestock producers getting the cattle out onto pasture as soon as possible. However, putting cattle on grass before it is ready will limit the grazing you can get out of it for the entire season and even longer. The why of this is dependent on the way grass grows.

Different grass species have different growth habits and different stages where they are best grazed.

Timothy, a very popular grass, is really a poor pasture grass. It puts out three small leaves on the stem, then goes to head and seed production.

Meadow bromegrass, on the other hand, is a lot different. It will stay vegetative for most of the summer, putting out 23 – 27 leaves before the seed head emerges.

This provides far more grazing for the entire grazing season. There are also differences in spring growth between tame and native grass species. If you have to graze pastures early, tame pasture will be ready at least two weeks be-

fore native range.

To begin growth or to regrow after cutting or grazing, grasses must take energy out of the roots and move it into the shoots. This causes the root mass to shrink. If you don’t give the grass time to renew the energy in the roots you end up with a situation where the vast majority of the grass roots are concentrated in the top two to four inches of soil. There they are short of nutrients and susceptible to dry conditions and I have often heard producers call the pasture “rootbound.”

One solution for this condition is rest, but most graziers cannot afford to leave a pasture ungrazed for a couple of years. Another tool that can be used is using fertilizer to stimulate growth. It still requires moisture to get down into the root zone and you still have to allow the plants to grow at least six inches high prior to grazing.

Some other strategies to be used to provide early pasture include having forage kept over from last fall or grazing aftermath left

from the previous year. This can work, but there will be need for high quality supplements to be fed as well.

Aftermath may be useful to fill up the cows, but it will be low in feed value and protein. This can be a real problem if the cows have calves, at side or are ready to calve as milking cows require a high level of feed quality.

Using a winter cereal seeded last fall can provide early season grazing. However, you still need to let the plant grow to the third or fourth leaf before putting the cows out. Also, after going through winter, the fall rye or winter wheat will attempt to head out early.

Crested wheatgrass can be used as early season grazing as it is one of the earliest grasses to start growing in the spring and survives spring grazing. Annual cereals can be grazed in a pinch, but then you sacrifice grain production for the grazing. In annual crops, once the growing point is above the soil surface and is grazed, any regrowth has to come from the base of the

plant and regrowth is slow, if at all. Another approach, though not recommended, is to set aside an early spring pasture as sacrifice.

The cattle may not get much out of it but it should then be left ungrazed until the fall.

Once summer comes, you can get the most from your tame pastures by using a rest-rotation. The goal here is to take enough early on, to keep the plants vegetative, but not too much so they can have energy to regrow. A rotational system allow for some flexibility as to when to use the forage. In wet years, you can also choose to hay any excess production.

Grass and hay production should be treated like any annual crop. Know the nature of the plants growing there and use them as they are best suited to meet your grazing needs. Working with the biology of the

crop will benefit you and your livestock in the long run.
