Firefighters prepare for wildfire season Fire prevention kits a must for acreage owners with property near wooded areas BY JOHN MATHER The Lamont Fire Department has teamed up with the Fire Chiefs Association of Alberta to promote and sell fire kits to rural homeowners that can be attached to rooftop eavestroughing and may save the home in the event of a wildfire coming near.
Lamont County Fire Chief Shayne Milliken showed off one of the units on April 29. “It’s called a Wildfire Protection Kit,” he said. “Essentially we get a bulk pricing on purchasing the kits and their goal is to provide portable fire protection.
“They’re geared to provide some safety for acreages that border on heavily wooded areas,” he said. “The goal of these is to have one or two. When you know there’s a wildfire you can deploy them to the eavestrough and hook up your garden hose to the unit and hook it to the outside faucet,” he
explained. “When the water is turned on the sprinkler and the top of the unit attached to the eaves spreads water onto the roof and the surrounding areas to wet it down and prevent any flying embers from starting a fire.” Continued on Page 14
