Andrew grads reach for tomorrow

Cherish yesterday, live for today, reach for tomorrow Megan Lockhart Associate Editor The Andrew High School Class of 2016 held their graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 28 at the Andrew Community Hall.

The graduates for this year are: Janelle Birkholz, Geoffrey Bryks, Troy Furgeson, Jessica Goddu, Tristen Horne, Eric Little, Cassie Melenka, Joshua Miller, Cassandra Ostashek, and Emily Slasynski.

Though Troy Furgeson and Tristen Horne chose not to participate in Saturday's ceremony, the class was joined by Cole Goodman, who attended Andrew School alongside them until just last year.

The class chose the quote "Cherish yesterday, live for today, reach for tomorrow" as their theme for the ceremony.

The evening began with a buffet dinner, and Father Gerasim Power said grace.

Dawson Danyluk acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event.

Father Power gave an invocation following the introduction of the graduates.

TJ Kennerd gave the Principal's Message to the graduates.

He was followed by Mark Liguori, Superintendent of Elk Island Public Schools.

The Mayor of Andrew, Heather Tait, gave a message to the graduates, as did

Trustee Colleen Holowaychuk on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

Alex Slasynski spoke to the grads on behalf of Student Council.

Kennerd and Gregory Cruickshank then presented each gradate with their certificate.

They read off a student resume for each graduate, as well as a message from the teachers.

Cassandra Ostashek gave her Valedictorian Address to her classmates.

Janelle Birkholz and Eric Little gave a tribute to the teachers, and Little also introduced the evening's guest speaker, Asha Ram. Ram taught the graduates for several years, before moving on to another

school last year.

Cassie Melenka gave a thank-you to Ram on behalf of the class.

Melenka was joined by Geoffrey Bryks for a class history presentation, where they recalled some of the more interesting moments that the group shared as a class.

The grads then watched a slideshow, prepared by Joshua Miller, featuring photos of each graduate throughout their lives.

Jessica Goddu thanked all attendees for coming, and the evening was finished off by a benediction from Father Power.

Congratulations to all of the Andrew graduates of 2016.

Driveway shootings in Chipman and Edmonton on Friday KERRY ANDERSON Just after 3:00 pm Friday afternoon, a man was shot and left for dead on a driveway in the village of Chipman.

Neighbours responded to the sound of gunshots and cries for help, running to the man's aid and calling for emergency rescue professionals who were quick to respond. Multiple police arrived and began investigating the site of the crime and searching for

press, but police confirm that the shootings don't appear to be random acts.

Witnesses in the Chipman crime report the possibility of the criminals driving a red and orange jeep, while in Edmonton witnesses report a black Toyota car as possibly belonging to the shooters.

The Chipman shooting victim is in an Edmonton hospital in stable condition, receiving treatments.

The Edmonton victim died of his wounds. On Sunday in Edmonton there was another shooting outside a restaurant. Unknown if any are related.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP are investigating the Chipman shooting. The name of the victim is being withheld by police at this time. The Leader was reporting from the scene as it happened online.

Coincidentally or not, shortly after Lamont Leader editor Michelle Pinon broke the story Friday afternoon, a similar incident happened on a driveway in Edmonton that very evening. A neighbour in Edmonton said that shooting occurred at 8:40 pm on a quiet residential street.

In both cases, police held onlookers at bay while securing the scene. Little has been reported to the

Neighbours first on the scene for Chipman shotgun victim, and help save his life Michelle Pinon Editor

Evan Nickerson was at home in Chipman when he heard a loud crack Friday afternoon before 4 p.m.

Nickerson asked his neighbour Mike, who resides on 48th Avenue if he heard anything when they heard a guy yelling for help. They quickly went down main street on foot.

“We heard a guy yelling for help.” The man was lying in a drive-

way with a gunshot wound to his arm, and pellets sprayed on his chest. Nickerson said he and his neighbour stayed to comfort the man while waiting for authorities and emergency personnel to arrive on scene.

Another eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said she was driving behind a red and orange jeep, when the passenger door flung open.

Then she saw the guy collapse in the yard. She drove to her home and called Fort Sask-

atchewan RCMP. STARS Air Ambulance could be seen flying just above the rooftops on main street around 4:37 p.m., and with the assistance of a firefighter with the Village of Chipman, the helicopter landed on the green space beside the Chipman National Hall.

Around six police vehicles were on scene, taking witness statements, photos, and cordoning off the area with yellow tape to secure what one officer said was a crime

Even several hours later, police were gathering evidence and taping off a neighbouring property. Village of Chipman Fire Chief Mike Seipert was standing out in the rain along 48 Avenue around 6:30 p.m. and could not officially make a statement at that time due to the ongoing investigation.

STARS and EMS saved the life of the shooting victim, getting him to hospital where he is stable.

Chipman mayor shocked Village of Chipman Mayor Jim Palmer said there has never been an incident of this kind in the community. "Not in the 35 years I've lived here."

At 3:52 p.m. Palmer said he was phoned and told to go to 47th Avenue because there had been an incident. "It's scary when somebody starts shooting." He describes the feeling as "disconcerting.”

Obituary Yarosloski, Cindy Helen Cindy Helen Yarosloski from Andrew, Alberta passed on May 22, 2016 while at the Eagle Hill Lodge, Willingdon, Alberta at the age of 77 years.

Cindy was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on September 2, 1939 to John and Pearl Sytko. She was the youngest of 11 children and grew up in the town of Willowbrooke.

She is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife Patricia, grandchildren John, Ashley, and Kyle, and great grandchildren Nathan, Logan, Emily, Michael, Jada, and Emily; and John and his wife Joan, grandchildren, Sherrie and Barbie, great grandchildren Monty, Mike, Braeden, and Salina. Cindy was predeceased by her husband John Yarosloski.

Cindy decorated the world around her with acts of kindness, an abiding love and care for her family and friends, and a devotion to her church and God. She spent many years in service to the Vegreville Victim's Services Unit where she forged enduring relationships with people she helped, but was best known for the cookie platters and Christmas cakes she gave out, and the culinary creations that blessed the tables of so many. She will be forever remembered, and forever missed.

A Memorial Service was held on Monday, May 30, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Smoky Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church, Smoky Lake, Alberta, with Pastor Toby Wong officiating. Inurnment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Opinion NDP timing horrible on climate change tax Last summer, after giving the newly elected NDP government led by Premier Rachael Notley four months slack to get their ducks in a row, I wrote that I hoped the premier would take the route of former Premier Ralph Klein instead of her reported plans of increasing taxes and budgeting record deficits.

But alas, hopes are often ruined by reality and disappointment.

In only her first year, the NDP premier set a record deficit budget in place for Albertans; and then this past week announced that she planned to increase tax on gasoline, natural gas and diesel come Jan. 1 so that she could pull $6 billion out of Albertan’s pockets in the next five years and give it to green infrastructure and a new Energy Efficiency Agency.

With so much of the oilfield closed down due to low prices and a glut in the market, is this really a good time to yank $6 billion out of the pockets of families struggling to make ends meet? Or rather,

should I say families who are not on the government payroll or beholden to labour unions? They’ll of course all be fine. They have unlimited access to our money.

Premier Klein tried to put an end to deficit budgeting when he passed a balanced budget law meant to avoid future deficit budgeting in Alberta. However subsequent PC governments after Klein ignored the law and proceeded with their patented deficit budgeting, something the new premier had little trouble advocating.

Premier Klein faced low oil prices for half of his 14 year term (under $30/barrel), and was left with a $22.7 billion deficit by his predecessor Premier Don Getty. Oil never went over $30/barrel until seven years into the Klein rule, but somehow Klein balanced a budget which hadn’t been accomplished for some seven consecutive budgets. It’s now been eight straight deficit budgets since Klein’s reign, and oil is

nowhere near $30 now - but rather close to $50/barrel.

When oil prices went way up for Premier Klein, he gave every Albertan (man, woman and child), $400 in Prosperity Bonus cheques (Klein Bucks) in 2005 representing a $1.4 billion investment in Alberta families who were sure to put the money right back into the economy.

I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Premier Notley would have already put forth a Provincial Sales Tax, however Premier Klein took care of that notion during his time in office when he passed the Taxpayer Protection Act which is a law stating any Alberta government wanting to implement a PST must first put it to a province-wide referendum.

The good news Albertans, one year down and only three to go.

EMS barbeque clears $2,750 for hospital Lamont and Andrew first responders serve up great community support Megan Lockhart Associate Editor

Prairie EMS hosted a barbeque lunch on Friday, May 27 at the Lamont EMS station.

Paramedics and first responders from both Lamont and Andrew detachments were on hand to prepare and serve food for a great cause.

“What we do is, we turn around and put the money back into the community,” said Operations Supervisor and paramedic Shane Croke.

This year, the funds

were donated to the Lamont Hospital Foundation.

The annual barbeque is unique in that meals can be pre-ordered the evening before and delivered to businesses and organizations around town.

“We understand that not everyone can make it,” said Croke.

Including those preorders and deliveries, as well as those who showed up to pick up their lunch, 322 people were served during Friday’s event.

There were many generous contributors to the

event, including Price Automotive, Lamont Foods, Lamont Hair Boutique, LA Hair Design, Beaver Hill Coop, Lamont Fire D e p a r t m e n t , Bruderheim Fire Department, Lamont County, and SEMTS. “We raised over $3,800,” said Croke.

He added that the amount was the gross total, and that once expenses were accounted for and taken off the total, they were able to donate $2,749.95 to the Lamont Hospital Foundation.

Time after time as the new young savior pulled on a team jersey and sang the praises of the storied history of the Oilers, fan hopes rose. Surely, now that Nugent-Hopkins / Eberle / Yakupov / Nurse / Hall / McDavid are on-board the team will return to its glory years. Or not.

LHS raises $1,680 for Fort McMurray

On Thursday, May 26, Lamont High School held a fundraiser for those affected by the wildfire at Fort McMurray.

The evening featured a barbeque, silent auction, and bingo.

Lamont and District Ag Society provided the cooking for the meal.

“Lamont High School, the Lamont Grad Class of 2016, and Lamont Foods donated the food for the barbeque,” said Cindy Gruber.

The Lamont Lions Group ran the bingo, with Cory Coarkokopailo doing the voice work.

“Little did we know, but Cory comes from three generations of bingo callers,” said Sharon McLean, LHS principal.

She added that the biggest challenge of the night for her was staying on task while playing the game.

Lamont Fish and Game ran the silent auction all evening, which featured donations from many local businesses and organizations.

Gruber stated that around 150 people showed up for the barbeque, and 45 stayed to play bingo.

“We raised $640 in our silent auction,” said Gruber.

An unexpected donation of $200 in change was generously given by two elementary school students, Marshall Ben Sloan and J’Lynn Siddall.

Sloan is from Fort McMurray, where he attended Dr. K.A. Clark, and said that he witnessed the houses of two of his friends burn down.

He is now in classes at Lamont Elementary School, and Siddall is his neighbour.

The pair of them set up a lemonade stand to contribute to the evening’s total.

“They walked into our fundraiser to make their

donation,” said McLean.

“We were very proud of them. Two wonderful students.”

“Our grand total was just under $1,680,” said Gruber.

“I thought that was amazing.”

Gruber noted that the evening was a success due to the generosity of locals.

“A big thank you to the community for supporting us and our neighbours to the north in Fort McMurray,” she said.

Members of the Lamont Lions Club were on hand to lead attendees in a game of Bingo on Thursday evening.

Valedictorian speech by Cassandra Ostashek Good evening honoured guests, teachers, family, and friends; thank you for joining us this evening as we celebrate the Andrew School Graduating Class of 2016! My name is Cassandra Ostashek, and I am honoured to deliver the valedictorian speech on behalf of this year’s graduates.

First and foremost, congratulations to everyone on stage and to those not participating in this evening’s ceremonies. Twelve years of working tirelessly have led to this moment, which seems like the end, when in fact we know it is only the beginning. At the end of June, we will all be starting new, exciting, and unknown chapters in our lives, but there is no doubt in my mind that anyone here will be anything short of successful. I have grown up with most of you since Kindergarten, and I

am so proud of everything we have accomplished since then. This class consists of talented, strong willed, young adults, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of us.

We’ve conquered many obstacles on the journey to this very moment, and will face so many more as we carry on into tomorrow. With each day, with each year, we will gather new experiences, meet new people, and brave new challenges, all of which will prepare us for the greatest accomplishments of our lives. What I think is really important to remember now, is that we aren’t special; we have done simply what is expected of us. Now is the time to make our mark, to exhibit our exceptional qualities, and show the world how valuable we are. I wish nothing but the best for all of you, and I hope

that our paths don’t lead us too far apart.

I’d like to take this opportunity to express gratitude toward the teachers, administrators, and all staff members that have made our school experience so memorable. Not only have you been educators for the last twelve years, but really, you have become like friends to many of us. In a school as small as Andrew, there is no wonder how we could have ever formed such close bonds with our teachers. I guess you aren’t all just babysitters, like you’ve tried to make us believe for so long.

Our list of administrators over the years has grown quite long, though I must say that some of the kindest, most supportive people have been able to call themselves the Principal and Vice Principal of Andrew School. Mrs.

McLean, Mr. Verhoeff, Mr. Kennerd, and Mr. Cruickshank (just to name a few), have always provided a support system which I’ve learned you become more dependant on the closer you get to graduation. You truly are the “rocks” of the school, and of the individuals working inside it, staff and students alike.

Once again, I wish to thank all of the guests for being here tonight and for supporting the graduates up until now.

Our successes are yours too, and we ask for your support and acceptance of our future endeavours. I have complete faith in all of us to pursue not only what is best for ourselves, but those around us as well. Good luck to all of my fellow graduates in the future.

Local firefighters suit up for MS Walk in bunker gear Megan Lockhart Associate Editor A group of Lamont and Bruderheim firefighters walked a 5K on Sunday, May 29, while wearing bunker gear in support of a fellow first responder with Multiple Sclerosis.

Darrell and Jackie Katan lived in Bruderheim, where Darrell was a longtime firefighter, when they got the diagnosis.

“He was diagnosed with a very progressive form of MS,” said Jackie.

“It changed everything for us.”

They were forced to move in order to be closer to treatment options for Darrell.

Following his diagnosis, they became involved with the annual MS Walk, which takes place at 40 different locations across Canada, all on the same day each year.

“My husband and I formed a team. This is the third year we’ve been walking,” said Jackie.

The team was originally called Darrell’s Divas, and last year they raised $5,875 for the cause.

Their high total put them in the top five teams for online contributions.

During that last walk, they found that a team of Lamont area firefighters had taken on the challenge as well, and they were dressed in their bunker gear. Jackie recognized Scott Calder among them, who was

not only their neighbour in Bruderheim, but was also the son of the fire chief that Darrell had worked with.

Among the other firefighters were other men whose fathers had worked with Darrell as well.

“Scott is six foot seven,” said Jackie.

“Everybody noticed these guys in bunker gear.” Calder, she said, was interested in combining their teams. “Scott had said to us last year, ‘We’re going to join your team and walk with you.’”

He remained true to his word, and this year the team features 10 local firefighters from Lamont and Bruderheim, as well as one from Fort Saskatchewan. With the addition of a number of male firefighters to the team, a name change was in order. The group now calls themselves Darrell’s Divas and Dudes.

Jackie set a goal for the team in January, when she decided that she wanted to double the funds that they raised last year. Just days before the walk occurred, they hit their target.

“Our team has now collected over $10,000,” she said.

They have also achieved a higher ranking for online contributions, coming in at third.

Jackie added that she was not expecting to reach the goal once the fires in northern Alberta

began to spread, and so much of the province was focusing their donations on Fort McMurray.

“To have that kind of support is just amazing,” said Jackie. “We’re both really grateful.”

The firefighters are not the only locals who are getting involved in the MS Walk.

“Vince Price from Price Automotive has got a small school bus,” said Jackie. The bus was used to transport the firefighters and their gear to the event.

Though the Walk takes place across the country, Jackie noted that Alberta events are important for locals to support.

“All the money that’s raised here stays here,” she said.

For her family, that money can accomplish

great things.

“For the first time ever, there is research being done on the type of MS that my husband has,” Jackie said.

Nine countries are pooling their funding and resources for the research, though Canada is most in need of a cure.

“Canada has the most folks with MS out of those countries,” said Jackie. “They think there may be a link between it and a lack of Vitamin D.” She added that even in Alberta, there are places where the population has a much higher rate of MS diagnoses, and that Bruderheim is one of them.

Jackie said that the MS Society was an integral part of adjusting to her husband’s disease and treatments. She noted

that they provided her with information and research, and helped them to understand what was happening.

“Darrell has participated in research studies,” she said.

Their continued participation and fundraising for the MS Walk is a way for the Katan family to ensure that that help is always there, and will be available for others in the future.

“Darrell and I are so grateful and touched that members of the Lamont Fire Department are walking with us, and that they have put so much effort into helping us raise money for this cause,” said Jackie. “We want the community of Lamont to know what a wonderful group of community leaders they

have in the members of the fire department. The firefighters are not doing any of this for fan fair or notoriety, they are just doing it to help folks.

They are a special group of people indeed, and in our eyes Lamont is lucky to have them.”

The communities of Bruderheim and Lamont, and the fire departments’ involvement in the Walk, have ensured that the Katans can still feel a sense of home when they think of the area.

“Smaller communities rally behind their firefighters,” she said.

That dedication and support means great things for the totals raised by this year’s MS Walk, as well as the future for those with the disease.

Mundare Registry Ltd. held their grand opening on Thursday, May 26.

The ribbon cutting occurred in the afternoon in order to christen their new location.

The three-hour event saw nearly 50 people come to check out the building, as well as enjoy some cake and refreshments.

“For the actual ribbon cutting, there was about

30 people,” said Lisa Couchman.

“It went better than expected.”

She added that she had been wary of having too much food, but the concern was unnecessary.

“It was really wellattended,” said Couchman.

The new location is now open, and is running at extended hours in order to provide the best customer service possible.

Fatal motor vehicle accident Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta – RCMP were called to a collision at 3:15 A.M. Sunday, between a pickup truck and a semi-tractor trailer unit.

The male driver of the semi-tractor trailer unit was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver of the pickup truck was transported to a hospital in Edmonton with undetermined injuries, not believed to be life

threatening.

Emergency crews are still at the collision scene, located on highway 15 between Range Road 190 and 191, between Lamont and Chipman, Alberta.

Traffic is currently being rerouted around this location. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid traffic delays.

RCMP are still investigating the cause of this collision.

Chipman 4-H Beef Club Report Submitted by Amanda Mulholland Our club held its communications event on Feb. 20 in St. Michael.

There were a variety of interesting topics from the members. Meakin Conrad won for seniors, intermediate was won by Abigail Goy, and juniors was won by Wyatt Boon.

After speeches, we had a potluck lunch.

On Feb. 27, we had a friendly speaking competition between our club and the Bellis club.

We had our farm tour on April 2. Everyone’s calf is doing well. After the tour, we had a wiener roast.

In April, we went to a judging demonstration to learn how to look for a good beef animal.

The club helped at the Bull-arama on April 23.

We also helped in the Chipman town-wide clean-up.

We are all looking forward to achievement day and the sale on June 6.

AD DEADLINE

Ride For Dad stopping for lunch in Mundare June 11 Megan Lockhart Associate Editor

On June 11, the Telus Motorcycle Ride for Dad will be heading across the area, and making a stop in Mundare.

The poker run will kick off in Nisku, where around 1,000 motorcyclists will hit the highway.

The run begins at 10 a.m. and riders will head to Leduc before making their way to Tofield.

From there, they will head north, and enjoy lunch at Stawnichy’s in Mundare.

Last year’s Ride for Dad brought in $221,600, and had 779 riders.

The fundraiser and poker run collects donations for prostate cancer, and has stopped in Mundare before.

Last year, the town also hosted a stop on the run.

“There’s some really neat bikes,” said Lisa Euchuk, receptionist at Mundare Town Office.

She also noted that the poker run sees a lot of RCMP and army involvement.

“There’s actually quite a few of them that are on this tour,” said Euchuk.

This year, Main Street will be closed down to vehicular traffic starting at 10 a.m. in preparation.

between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Volunteers are still needed, and anyone interested can contact the Mundare Town Office for more information.

Duties for volunteers include cleaning up water bottles after the event, and collecting donations.

“We usually give them a bucket, and they collect donations that way.”

There will also be a table set up for donations on the day, or they can be made in advance on the Telus Ride for Dad website.
