Lamont community leader, long-time Mayor Fred Pewarchuk passes away JOHN MATHER Lamont lost a long time community leader with the passing of Fred Pewarchuk on May 21 at the age of 82. He was first elected as a councillor in Lamont from 1969 to 1971 and then became Mayor in 1995 and served until 2007. “I worked closely with Fred,” said Lamont CAO Sandi Maschmeyer. “I was the office manager back then.” Mayor Bill Skinner added he had been fortunate enough to spend his first three terms as a councillor learning from Pewarchuk. “I learned a huge amount from him,” said Skinner. Fred was born in Lamont and attended high school in the town, said his son Douglas. “He grew up on the family farm and then went to Edmonton to study and work,” said Doug. He met his wife Lidy while in Edmonton. “When I was just a young boy,” added Doug. “The family moved back to Lamont in the 1960s.” Right from the start, he adds, his father was involved in the community. “He was a member of the agricultural society. When they put up the arena and hall in the 70s he was involved with that.”

He went on to say his dad, an avid curler, was involved in the Lamont curling scene when the club was located by Archer Memorial Hospital and when the club moved to its current facility. He was also involved in the Elk Island Golf Club. “We used to have wiener roasts and hot dogs out at the park for all the volunteers,” remembered Doug. “Then we’d have a few rounds of golf. I’m not sure if he ever won low net but he sure enjoyed his golf.” Fred was involved in every aspect of the town. “Once he ran for mayor, he really enjoyed that,” added Doug. “Being a mayor of the small town isn’t a lot to live on, but it’s very involved and there’s always a lot to do.” After leaving office, he continued sitting on the community futures board. Pewarchuk was politically involved in the provincial and federal political scene. “I remember we’d go to all the BBQs when Don Mazankowski was our MP,” said Doug. “And then he helped Ed Stelmach when he was both MLA and Premier. He served as the president of the provincial constituency association for a while.”
MAUREEN SULLIVAN Craig Nielsen was enjoying an early morning run in Elk Island National Park when he was attacked by a bison. Nielsen and his pregnant wife were camping at Astotin Lake Campground over the long weekend, when he
decided to go for a run on Saturday, May 19. He was returning to the campsite when he stumbled across a lone bison grazing near the road. "Right after I stopped running and after I saw him, he looked up, saw me and immediately

There were two Pewarchuks’ on the ballot and we both lost.” He is now serving his second term as a councillor. Doug added his dad and mom were really involved with the Russian Orthodox Church. “We have a church in Chipman which my grandfather helped build,” said Doug. “All through his later life mom and dad were in the choir and they travelled through the various small communities with the priests.” They’d help out, Doug added, maintaining the priests’ home in Lamont and the family would always do their best to make any new priests welcome in the community. “As a family we were really touched that the Bishop attended his service on Friday,” he added, choking up. “I’m sure dad would have been really happy having three priests and the charged," says Nielsen. Terrified he saw a cluster of trees past the ditch and began to run. "But as I started to run, I slipped and fell." The marathoner tried to get up but the bison struck him in the rear with his horns and lifted him into the air.

He finished his career as an instructor at NAIT retiring in the 1990s. In addition to serving the community as an elected official, Pewarchuk had many years with the local Lions Club. He was currently serving as the club’s Lion Tamer and also called Bingo games for both the Lions and the local seniors club. He left his wife of 60 years Lidy, two sons, Fraser and Douglas and five grandchildren.
Nielson landed in the trees, which were so thick the large bison couldn’t continue his charge. Checking the extent of his injuries, he felt a whole in his shorts, a flap of skin and a whole lot of blood. Having lost his cell-
phone in the incident, Nielsen flagged down a passing car who had stopped to see the bison. The motorists drove him to help and he received six stitches. There have only been two bison attacks at EINP in the past six years.

50th anniversary of priesthood MAUREEN SULLIVAN The parishioners of St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church came together on Sunday, May 27 to celebrate Father Ignatius Holowaychuk and his 50 years as a priest. Father was born in Andrew in 1935 and returned to the family farm in the St.Michael area. His family then moved to Winnipeg and then to Edmonton. Holowaychuk attended the University of Alberta where he received a degree in science. In 1958 he returned to Mundare and entered
the Basilian Order. For the next 10 years he studied the noviciate and theology in Mundare, Ottawa and Rome. On January 14, 1968 he was ordained as a priest in Edmonton. He travelled widely in his 50 years spending time as a teacher and a pastor. From Edmonton to Toronto, back to Mundare and then to Bradford, England. From Vegreville to Vancouver and Ottawa back to Vancouver and finally to Mundare in 2001. Serving as a Pastor and Superior in Mundare from 2001 to 2012, he
then returned to Vegreville to pastor for two years. He retired to Mundare in 2014, leaving for a short period to Edmonton when the Basilians home was being renovated. Father Ireneus Prystajecky, the current pastor of St Peter and Paul, said of Holowaychuk, "he was always obedient, moving whenever he was asked, and going where he was needed. He also left the church records in wonderful condition, the previous pastors, not so much."
Although Holowaychuk is suffering from dementia, he still leads the daily masses at the church. Father Ignatius' Jubilee was held at the National Hall in Mundare with a potluck lunch. Joining the parishioners were members of Father’s family including his brother Dennis Holowaychuk, sister Donna Holowaychuk and cousin Jeanette Bayduza. Other members of the family included John and Pat Mayco and Lena Sloboda.

Opinion Assimilation a must for new Canadians It is not a right for immigrants to live in Canada, it is a privilege. It is also a privilege for Canadians to live in Canada, and we are so lucky to have been born here. Canada has 150 successful years developing its own culture and beliefs, and yet has been generously willing to allow selected immigrants, who may add to our way of life, live here peacefully. Generally, Canada allows new Canadians to celebrate their “old country” cultures while in Canada as long as they are within our laws. This tolerance of others, and willingness to accept other cultures into Canada’s “melting pot” is a kindness so often unseen in other countries. However, there must also be an assimilation by all new Canadians. They must come here not solely for their own financial benefit, but with a real belief and desire to live in a better place and contribute to a higher standard in a bright future and even better Canada. People only change when the pain of staying the same, is greater than the pain of changing. Moving to another country is a great change. Immigrants who come to Canada for wealth and peace, must realize that they need to embrace the values that ultimately created the wealth and peace - and not be embedded in the practices which created the unsuccessful country from which they may have come. Canada’s seventh, and first francophone Prime Minister (1896-1911), Wilfred Laurier once said that immigrants are welcome to Canada and should be treated on equal grounds. He said it would be shameful to discriminate against such a person for reasons of their beliefs, or the place of birth or origin. However he warned, that the immigrant must assimilate to our ways, and in all aspects of our life. “There can be no divided allegiances here… Any man who says that he is a Canadian, but tries to impose his customs and habits upon us, is not a Canadian. We have only room for one flag, the Canadian flag.” I am sorry to say that Laurier’s warning has not been heeded by the present Prime Minister or his Canadian government. Kerry Anderson
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Alberta apologizes to Sixties Scoop survivors As part of Alberta’s commitment to reconciliation, Alberta officially apologized for past practices that led to the removal of Indigenous children from their families, resulting in a loss of culture, identity and connection to their communities. The impacts are still felt by survivors and their families today. “It hurts just to imagine the heartbreak experienced by these families, along with the loss of language, culture and sense of belonging. Survivors can never replace what was taken, and I am sorry. We must acknowledge these wrongs and the toll they have taken, and thank survivors for their courage in speaking up.” Rachel Notley, Premier “In the true spirit of reconciliation, this apology from the Premier is an acknowledge-

Between January and March, the Government of Alberta worked with the Sixties Scoop Indigenous Society of Alberta to conduct engagement sessions across Alberta. The sessions provided an opportunity to listen to survivors and empower them in a respectful and inclusive engagement that led to today’s apology. Alberta has previously taken steps to acknowledge past mistreatment of Indigenous people, including a 2015 apology for failing to stop children taken from their homes as part of the federal residential school system.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Exciting Days Ahead
BY HAZEL ANAKA For many months I’ve been dreaming about an addition to our circa 1960 house. Over the years we’ve made improvements: an awesome kitchen, air conditioning, new flooring throughout. And while those things added to our enjoyment of our home, they didn’t add a single extra square foot of area. Since last fall we’ve been thinking and researching. We got drawings done, got preapproved for the money, interviewed builders and got quotes. Those steps forward were enough incentive for me to begin dreaming, imagining, visualizing how it’ll look and function in the end. I expect this process to be much like a pregnancy. Lots of discomfort and pain culminating eventually, finally in a beautiful new life. Because we have
nowhere to go, we will be living through it on site. Compounding the issue is the fact that construction season is also farming and festival season. Despite the mess, chaos, and disorder at home we still need to be able to find our clothes, stay connected to WiFi, find files and supplies for our work. Have a place to lay our heads. We need to stay ahead of the builder and trades and not be the cause of any delays. So, for months now, I’ve been anticipating how this will go and packing things up. Some things were really easy. They are not necessities of life but rather those things that improve quality of life. God help me if I have to find anything that I’ve packed away. There are limits to how many boxes one can fit into a house and still leave room to move. I was also determined to minimize the number of times anything needs to be handled. We’ll see how well that goes. The plan that makes the most sense on our site and with the existing floor plan is adding chunks on two sides: the west wing and the east wing. That means two excavations, two sets of ICF forms, two areas of
disruption. That has meant removal of two gigantic spruce trees (two feet in diameter, 3540 feet in height), a columnar cedar, parts of lilac and cotoneaster hedges. In addition, we’ve had to remove landscape timber flowerbeds and landscape rocks. Still in the way is the yard light post. So that’s gotta go too. I hope we can replace it with a solarpowered decorative lamp pole. I don’t think Roy should be climbing up there every time a sensor or sodium vapour bulb needs replacing. Far more fun than the heaving and toting has been the dreaming. I’ve looked through dozens of décor books, sketched layouts, measured furniture I want to repurpose. Over the years we’ve bought antique pieces that were beautiful and well-made. Now they will have pride of place. One addition will include an upstairs laundry, powder room, and magnificent office for me. The other will be a master suite including walk in closet. With the seeding done and the festival work in good shape, we can focus on the exciting days ahead, from where I sit.

NY dance scholarship for Chipman’s Deanna Derksen SUBMITTED Deanna Derksen never dreamed when she stepped on stage to perform her lyrical dance solo at the Central Alberta Dance Festival in Red Deer April 28 she would be awarded a $1,000 US scholarship to attend an intensive dance training program with Be Discovered in New York City from Nov. 16-23. The 11-year-old Chipman resident, who dances with the Ryley based Nikos Dance Team, says she is still in shock, and doesn't really know how or why she was selected by the adjudicator Dave Campbell, but is thrilled to represent her hometown and club in the Big Apple this fall. "Maybe he saw potential in me?" wonders the
spritely young lady with a bubbly personality to match. When her name was called to accept the award, Deanna says, "I kind of froze," but stood up to receive the award and a big hug from the adjudicator. Her twin sister J'lyn, also on stage, immediately broke into tears upon hearing her sibling's name and couldn't wait to congratulate and hug Deanna tightly. Things didn't really sink in until they got back to the hotel. While Deanna's mom Jodie never expected such an honour, she was "over the moon" and initiated a gofundme page the very next day to help raise the necessary funds to participate in the dance program. She estimates it will cost around $5,700, (US) not including
flights and accommodation, to make the trip to New York City. "We are hoping to raise this money to help her achieve her goals and dream. Her love and passion for dance is unbelievable, and this opportunity is once in a lifetime." Not only will Deanna get the chance to train with top New York and Broadway choreographers, but rehearse with professionals who will prepare the dancers to perform in the world famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which is seen on NBC by over 50 million viewers. In addition to the dance program, participants get to go on a cruise to the Statue of Liberty, take in a Broadway show, and attend the Rockettes
Christmas Spectacular. Deanna says she's never been on an airplane, let alone visited another country. Deanna has been dancing for six years, and readily confesses to loving the sport which combines athleticism and art. "For me, I love the feeling I get when I'm dancing; the world disappears and I can be myself." Her emotional portrayal during her recent performance to the song 'Tiny Voice' has catapulted her beyond her wildest dreams, and with pledges and sponsorship from friends, family, community members and the public at large; she will be able to let her inner spirit shine through for all the world to see. Music was in the air in Andrew and Mundare May 23. The Austin O'Brien High School Music Band came out to play on their BIG THINGS Tour. Music teacher George Koufogiannakis and the Senior Concert Ensemble from Edmonton, spent the day travelling around giving free concerts for the schools and communities in each town. The 65 students performed on all band instruments
from flutes and trumpets to saxophones, guitars and tubas. The band performed in Andrew at the Mallard Duck and finished up in the Town of Mundare under the Sausage. They also performed in Glendon, vilna and St.Paul. The performers, were a fun, lively group who interacted with the audience, encouraging local students to join in with musical instruments and danc-

ing. They featured light-hearted music from the movies and popular culture as well as one traditional Ukrainian song. Koufogiannakis, when asked about the day long tour stated, "We just thought it would be really fun to go out on the road and share our love of making music and performance. In a light hearted unexpected event, and to make some new friends along the way. We enjoy seeking new and unique ways of
presenting our wacky form of musical performance and connecting with our audience." Colin Zyla, CAO of Mundare, came out to listen to the band and brought Freezies for all. He said, "it was a pleasant interlude in the day." The band, which has performed all over North America, including Disney resorts in California and Florida, hopes to continue its BIG THINGS tour in southern Alberta in a different year..

Tewnty-nine children ranging in age from one to nine years of age picked up garbage around the Sausage Park and Cenotaph.

They cleaned up so much garbage that they overfilled the plastic garbage bin in the park. The children had so much fun finding all the garbage and putting it into their individual bags that one child told the staff, "you can call us the Clean Up Crew" as he continued to search for and pick up garbage. "This was a great learning experience for
the children as it taught them something about littering, the community, protecting the earth and the team work it will take to make a place look clean again," said Lisa Harris “We had so much fun that we plan to do this annually.” This was the first time that the daycare organization has taken part in the town cleanup.

Andrew Mosquitos vs. Tofield Moush John On Wednesday, May 23, Andrew Fireballs Mosquito team dropped a 12-11 baseball game against Tofield’s Mosquito. Head Coach John Van Hauwaert said he was still getting the players on the team to grasp pitching and batting. “This is their first year in Mosquito, they have been playing T ball last year so it’s a learning curve,” Hauwaert said. “Also, in this game we only had seven players, and had to borrow two players from Tofield to get the game going.” This is Hauwaert’s first year of coaching the Mosquito team, although he has had experience coaching T ball in the city for a few years now. “We have a great group of kids this season, and are just focusing on the fundamentals of pitching and batting well,” Hauwaert added. “Given the size of the kids on our team, the distance from the home base to the pitching plate can be intimidating, but we will get there.”

Inter Pipeline officials outline heavy loads routes to Lamont Council JOHN MATHER Inter Pipeline brought their information show to Lamont Council on May 22 detailing the heavy hauls that will happen in the County. The company is in the process of constructing a $4.4 billion plant in the Fort Saskatchewan area. The plant will take propane and convert it into polymer grade polypropylene. After giving an overview of the project, they mentioned the transportation corridors that will affect Lamont and Lamont County. The movement of modules will start in October and move through the area until 2020. Over 300 modules for the plant are being constructed in Alberta at sites in Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, and Grande Prairie. They will all be over-dimensional loads. The largest modules will move next Jan. and Feb. when the roads are totally frozen. These large moves will see a splitter, weighing 850 metric tonnes; a deethanizer stripper; a purge bin and a reactor being shipped from Dacros Cessco’s Edmonton yard. “All the moves will impact people and traffic,” it was said. While the majority of the modules movements will take place at night, thereby minimizing the impact, the largest modules will have to be moved during the day. From the Dacros Cessco mod yard they will move through the County of Lamont. The company is seeking feedback on the transportation moves to minimize the impact on local residents. Signs would be placed on the routes prior to the moves letting area residents know of the moves so they can alter their schedules. The moves are the largest of their type in the history of Alberta, it was added. Gigantic heaters which will moved though Fort Saskatchewan will be more than 23 feet high, but don’t have a lot of weight, it was added. Councillor Al Harvey asked more details
regarding the routes through Lamont. “Those loads coming up through Tofield will block the entire road, correct?” he asked. Dawson said the highway would be closed temporarily during the moves and the loads would move at 20 kph. “We’ll hope people will be aware and they can avoid the loads,” she said. “Each one has to be on site and then a second load will be transported.”
Councillor Perry Koroluk asked if there was a schedule of the moves and Dawson replied the company’s website would supply updates on the heavy load moves starting in September. Harvey mentioned Highway 14 and 15 have shoulders, but there were none on Highway 834. “This load is long, high and wide with a lot of wheels under it,” she said. “The traffic will be

Where necessary the company will be building bypasses to ease the movement of the loads and the Norris Bridge on Highway 834 will be upgraded to allow for the transit of the heavy loads. She said adverse weather could impact the move, but the public would be informed every step of the way. Further, she stated the emergency services would be aware of the moves. Alberta Transportation licences the moves and they also keep the public informed through their websites. Harvey asked if there would be opportunities
for local businesses to get involved in the subtrade work at the plant. Dawson assured council all local businesses from welders to hotel operators would be eligi-
ble for work at the plant both through the operations commissioning team and with the main contractors on the site, who are encouraged to hire locally.
