EINP over-crowded on weekends Visitors turned-away as vehicles exceed capacity - Covid restrictions partly the reason for increased popularity BY JOHN MATHER Prior to the long weekend, Elk Island officials sent out a release asking people to stay away from the national park on the weekend. “Visitation has been very busy on the weekends and is so high the number of vehicles in the park are causing a

public safety concern.” The release said people are seeking to spend time in nature, which while they haven’t said, but can probably be tied to the limited social activities because of the pandemic regulations. If people want to visit Elk Island on the weekends, they are encouraged to

arrive before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to avoid the disappointment of not being able to enter the park because the number of vehicles has exceeded capacity. Park officials are recommending visitors come out to the park during the week when the crowds are fewer. “Being in nature provides important

physical and mental health benefits,” said the Park’s release. “Going outdoors is a great way to maintain health and wellness, so long as everyone follows public health measures that includes physical distancing practices and outdoor gathering restrictions of five people maximum.”

The beauty of Elk Island National Park south of Lamont is being enjoyed by so many people on weekends that park officials have had to limit traffic into the facilities. They recommend weekday visits or early morning, late afternoon arrivals.
