Alberta RCMP report that they will be focusing on enforcing sober driving over the Victoria Day long weekend, May 21-24.

“Though we expect less traffic on our provincial highways this upcoming Victoria Day long weekend, due to public health restrictions, Alberta RCMP will be out patrolling and removing impaired drivers from the roads.”

National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day is Saturday, May 22.

The initiative is part of Canada Road Safety Week, which runs May 18 through 24, and is an

initiative of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.

This campaign is country wide, and is aimed at promoting safe driving behaviours, as they relate to not just impaired driving, but distracted driving, speeding, and more.

“In 2020, approximately 20 per cent of all fatal motor vehicle collisions in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions involved impaired driving.

“Last year, Alberta RCMP charged 40 motorists with impairment over the Victoria Day Long weekend alone,” says Insp.

“We want to ensure that everyone, wherever they may be trav-

elling over the long weekend, does so safely.”

Alternative POV: Seeing both Time to rewrite the Education Act to help protect the rural way of life sides will improve communication Over the last decade in Flagstaff County, there have been instances where a decision of the local school board has contributed to or ensured the downturn of more than one community, and has left another, Hardisty, fighting to be heard.

The role of a school authority is to deliver education to Alberta’s children. The province delegates its responsibility in that regard to local school boards, with an obligation to answer for and report on the spending of public funds and [education] results achieved. On the face of things, that sounds like a reasonable expectation.

The province considers school authorities to be accountable organizations. But to whom are they accountable, and in what respect?

In today’s rural Alberta, the responsibility of educating our children should not be segmented from the efforts of municipal governments to improve and grow their communities. But unfortunately, it is.

Nowhere in the Education Act are School Boards accountable to their communities in terms of keeping those communities successful or viable, nor are they required to work with and consult the communities they operate within.

When the province removed the ability for school boards to set their education tax rates to meet their unique needs, it was a move meant to equalize funding between poor and rich divisions. But what it did as well was remove local accountability, and the ability or need for school boards to engage directly with its constituents.

As the province tightens its budget, education funding has decreased or changed, pushing school divisions further and further into considering only how to maintain quality education delivery with the dollars made available, without the luxury or ability to consider how their decisions will affect the communities they serve.

Municipal governments and communities work tirelessly to attract new residents, and to keep their communities vital and thriving, but have no power or input over the actions of the local school authority, which, by its decisions, could undo that work with a single brush stroke.

Perhaps the province, when rewriting the Education Act, could not conceive of a situation where the actions of a school board could threaten the very viability of a community. The same government who acknowledged that rural hospitals should remain open and operating in communities, even when they are not always used to capacity, seems unaware of or unconcerned by the power given to a school board to decimate a rural community by closing schools.

Alberta Education has created policies that do not require or even really allow school boards to collaborate with and consult the municipalities they operate within.

At present, school boards are only accountable with regards to the success of their students and ability to operate within their budgets, without obligation to contribute to, collaborate with, or maintain the success of the communities they serve.

That lack of direction or requirement from the province for school boards to work with their communities also gives school boards the opportunity to refuse to compromise, collaborate, or truly consult with municipal governments and neighbouring school divisions.

In my mind, the Education Act should require true consultation and collaboration between school boards and municipal governments. That would mean working with entire communities to strengthen and enhance not just the school, or enrollment, but the entire community. We’ve seen what the present method of delivering education has done to Flagstaff County communities in the past. I fear that the issues will only increase over the next decade.

The more that I think about it, the more it seems that wisdom is the ability to see more than simply our own perspective. In any situation, there may be many points of view, and when we attach ourselves to one, we lose flexibility.

We grow up in a culture that is based on polarity, and an educational system that prizes the "right" answer. We develop a mind-set that says one way or one idea is better, or more correct than the others. From here, it is a short step to the view that I am right, and you are wrong.

When this happens, conflict is the inevitable result. Think of two children fighting over a ball, each one trying to pull it away from the other. While the initial objective between the two may have been to play, it is now to struggle. Soon recess is over, and the opportunity for play is lost.

Sadly in life, either the evening, the vacation or the relationship is over, or someone dies, and the opportunity for harmony is lost. It is a tough learning.

While we cannot control those around us, we can strive to maintain harmony within ourselves, and in our dealings with others. We can operate with integrity and kindness, regardless of how they behave.

If such an attitude of non-aggression is met with negativity, and the negativity persists over time, then we must ask ourselves why we remain in such a situation.

If we become negative too, then we are sinking to the level of the lowest common denominator.

We can say anything we have to say with integrity. Ironically our messages lose power when we resort to anger and hostility, and gain power when we speak our truth softly. The truth has such a power of its own, that its echo reverberates within the consciousness of those who hear it. It does not need to be embellished. It might be ignored by others, but speaking it strengthens us.

If others cannot see and acknowledge our truth, then they cannot see or acknowledge us. And unless we're into begging, masochism, or some deep karmic lesson, it might be time to move on.

In our dealings with others, we can improve the quality of communication and relationships by expanding our perceptions to include theirs. Pretend that you are an outside observer, giving an objective report of what is transpiring. As that observer, generate some solutions that you might suggest to the parties.

This will help you to move beyond your own personal perspective and to become solution oriented. And it will be a powerful step on the path to becoming wise.

BRCF gives grant to Daysland Hospital Foundation

Battle River Community Foundation Director Leon Lohner and Martha Waldorf look on as Jean Vos presents the cheque to Denise Miller, Daysland Hospital Foundation Director and Tracy Thompson, Daysland Health Centre Unit Manager.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a $1,550 grant to the Town of Daysland and the Daysland Hospital Foundation.

The grant is from income from the Martha and Gene Waldorf Fund, and the Leo and Jean Vos Family Fund.

Both funds were established to support projects, programs and facilities serving residents of the Daysland Community.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations such as this in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive impact on the future.

Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made

possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds are kept intact and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Battle River Community Foundation has granted over $7,250,000 to support charitable activities in the Battle River Region.

Gibson Energy encourages employees to give back to community with ‘Kindness Campaign’ Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Gibson Energy supports many initiatives in the Flagstaff County region, not only through direct financial support, for example the Gibson Energy Centre in Hardisty, or funding for the FIRST Youth program Gibson Place, and countless others, but also by providing an opportunity for its employees to contribute directly to their communities through volunteerism.

Recently the Gibson team hosted a virtual bingo for employees, including a virtual 50/50 benefitting local charities. FIRST (Flagstaff Informed Response Sharing Team) was the Hardisty and area designated charity.

During the virtual event, part of a Gibson Gives campaign, a Gibson employee DJ played some throwback music, “So we could all give back together virtually,” says Chloe Mansfield from Gibson Energy. She says events like these “Are so fun and provide so many ways for our employees to give back.

“Essentially, these are employee giving campaigns where Gibson will increase a corporate match… often doubling or tripling our employee’s donations and amplifying their impact in the community.”

The recent event ran from March 29 to April 9 and raised over $50,000 for communities where Gibson works and lives, she says.

“COVID did not stop the Gibson team from giving back! In fact, we pivoted to a completely safe, virtual campaign.”

Mansfield says it was amazing to see that the Hardisty 50/50 draw winner, Shawn Campbell, Construction Man-

ager of the new DRU project, donated his winnings entirely back to FIRST, towards the youth mental health project Gibson Place.

She says the donation to FIRST amounted to $3,411 in total.

“It is incredibly heartwarming to see folks like Shawn give back like that... so selflessly.

“What is even more incredible to me is that there are many others like Shawn at Gibson, who give so generously with not only thier money, but their time, too.

“I am proud to work with the most kind group of people with the biggest of hearts who are always there when their communities need them.”

Lynne Jenkinson, Executive Director of FIRST, says, “A heartfelt thank you to each and every one who is sup-

porting youth mental health, we so need it now and in the future as mental health, although it is being talked about, is not being truly dealt with, especially at the youth level.” S h e ’ s hoping that Gibson Place can open this summer.

Anita Miller of Hardisty happens to be Gibson Energy’s top volunteer for 2020. She says, “It is amazing how many hours you truly volunteer when you actually track them.

“I attended meetings (mostly virtually), planted flowers, organized golf tournaments, entered hockey drafts to name a few for 2020.”

Miller says she’s not alone when it comes to local volunteerism.

“Gibson Energy had 13 employees reach 100+ hours and nine of those employees were in Hardisty.

Miller says Mansfield does a terrific job of coming up with fun volunteer activities for Gibson employees, plus employees can always do their own random acts of kindness in the community.

“And any volunteer counts towards our hours that Gibson gives us $10/hour and then in turn we donate that money to a charity or charities of our choice.”

Hi everyone, did you all enjoy the beautiful weather?

It’s so nice to get a bit of sun-

shine and warmth. As I sit here, trying to type up some news, we just got a heavy shower.

There’s puddles laying all over, so no sense going outside to do any yard work. I can’t do much anyway and it’s too wet.

Do you have some garden in? Most people do. It’s nice to hear that the farmers made

good head way getting their crops in; yes I know we did need the rain. Now we need the sunshine and warmth to make it grow with the warmth the trees leafed out to make everything look so much more green. When I heard the weather was supposed to change I went out and picked

some of my daffodils, they add so much brightness to the house and I’m quite enjoying them.

Premier hints at vaccination-based easing of restrictions Province releases new vaccination-rate regional map of province Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney indicated Monday, May 17, that cabinet would be considering a number of factors when determining when and how current pandemic restrictions would ease, not ruling out the possibility of tying it to vaccination rates, similar to what the Province of Saskatchewan has done.

He added that the third wave hit Alberta much harder than Saskatchewan, and that Alberta would be proceeding with a little bit more caution.

“But we will certainly be tying reopening in a large part to the percentage of people vaccinated.” He added, “We need the vaccine cautious people to realize that the ticket to normal is vaccination.”

The focus of the province’s Monday COVID-19 update appeared to be to reiterate the seriousness and validity of the pandemic, and its affect on Alberta’s health care system and population, urban and rural.

Kenney said that Alberta’s COVID-19 case numbers appear to be stabilizing, with transmission slowing down, but added that the province is still very much in the midst of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said, “Some people are saying that case numbers are inflated or exaggerated, but that’s not the case. COVID-19 is a very real situation we are all facing together.”

He addressed recent comparisons to the US versus Alberta, pointing out that it is estimated that one in three Americans contracted COVID-19, compared to one in 10 in Alberta, as well as three to 10 times more deaths in America attributed to COVID-19.

Kenney also had praise for Alberta’s health care workers, saying, “Behind every number, and the people who are ill or deathly ill, there is a team of dedicated health care workers.”

He challenged Albertans to consider the human effort and toll the pandemic has taken on not just Alberta’s heath care system, but its workers.

Kenney indicated that Alberta is presently 40 per cent above its normal pre-COVID ICU capacity.

He also noted that he’s heard repeatedly from municipal leaders and elsewhere that COVID-19 is an urban issue, not a rural issue.

He noted, however, that the highest per-capita rates of infection in the province are found in rural areas. “This isn’t urban vs. rural; it’s everywhere.”

Kenney said, “One tried and true way out of the pandemic is through vaccinations.”

He noted that 48.9 per cent of Albertans over 12 have received at least one dose, to date, adding, “Albertans have

stepped up in a big way.”

He said with case numbers heading downward, and with an expectation that hospitalizations will peak over the next few days to a week, the province is working on a clear path to open up by this summer.

He noted that the Calgary Stampede had announced plans to go forward this summer. “How big will depend on how many ‘stick it to COVID’ by getting the vaccine.”

Kenney invited Dr. Verna Yiu, Alberta Health Services President and CEO, along with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta Chief Medical Officer, to offer the science behind the province’s actions regarding COVID-19.

Dr. Yiu started off by thanking physicians and health care workers throughout the province. “We owe you a huge debt of gratitude,” she said.

She indicated that Alberta’s health care system is under significant stress: “More so than in any other time,” adding that COVID-19 related hospitalizations were six times higher than any due to influenza.

She spoke about ICU capacity and Alberta Health’s plans to meet any expanded needs, saying, “Our biggest challenge will be staffing, our physicians and staff are understandably exhausted.”

Dr. Yiu also expressed concerns about the high number of patients currently needing to be ventilated, saying, “The threat of serious illness from COVID is real, especially in young adults with no underlying conditions.”

Dr. Yiu reiterated Kenney’s earlier statement by saying, “We have one significant weapon against COVID-19; vaccinations. I am heartened to see so many Albertans say ‘yes.’”

Dr. Hinshaw announced a lifting of restrictions to allow drive-in events in the province, effective immediately.

She, too, addressed some of the myths about COVID-19, also discussing the urban vs. rural issue. “Twelve out of 15 areas with the highest active case rates are in rural locations. There are 66 rural communities with 300-plus cases for every 100,000 people or more, half of those have 500 cases per 100,000 people or greater. That’s higher than Edmonton or Calgary.”

She said using the case rate/per 100,000 population is the best way to compare.

She addressed what she called a second myth; that rural Albertans are not at risk from COVID-19.

“That may have been true at the beginning, but has clearly changed. Also, when you look at severe outcomes, rural cases are more likely to fall in this category.

“Since May 1, the North and Central zones have the highest hospitalization rates. The cases to hospitalization ratio

is 26 per cent higher compared to urban.

The case to ICU ratio is 36 per cent higher for rural cases.

“I am not stigmatizing rural; but this is not an urban vs. rural issue.”

Hinshaw also commented on rumours around testing. She said Alberta uses PCR tests, saying these tests are very specific, and faster, and can identify infection early in the course of disease.

“PCR testing is highly specific for the Sars COV-2 virus responsible for COVID-19.”

She said rumours regarding high rates of false positives have been addressed by testing known negative cases, and found, in fact, to be extremely rare. “We conduct continuous quality assurance.”

She said some people continue to test positive and shed the virus after having COVID-19, which is why the province focuses on testing at the early onset of symptoms. She called the PCR tests, “the gold standard in the world.”

On the good news side, Hinshaw says positivity rates are stabilizing, and appear to be going down, everywhere but in northern Alberta, where they continue to rise.

Hinshaw added to Yiu’s statement about COVID-19 being a serious health threat to people other than elders or those with underlying conditions. She said 40 per cent of hospitalizations from COVID-19 were people under 50 years of age, with 12 per cent of those under 30 years of age since February.

She also noted that COVID-19 can have serious long term, lasting impacts to patient’s health, including COVID long-termers, with ongoing research being done on the lasting impacts of the virus.

“We do not have to fear it, but we must respect COVID-19.”

Flagstaff County reaches 45 per cent vaccination rate The Province released new data on Monday, May 17, on vaccination rates by region.

Flagstaff County is one of around 20 Alberta regions who have reached the 40 to 60 per cent vaccination rate, with at least one dose.

Flagstaff County residents over 75 are 85 per cent vaccinated, with 720 people. The highest number of residents vaccinated are in the 60 to 74 group, with 76.9 per cent, or 1,380 people, receiving the vaccine, amongst the highest rate of vaccination in the province.

Just over half, 52.3 per cent of Flagstaff residents between age 40 and 59 have been vaccinated, or 1,101 people.

Those 20 to 39 are catching up, with just 27 per cent vaccinated so far, or 490 people.

Flagstaff has 133 people, or 25.1 per cent of its population between the ages of 12 and 19, who have received a first does.

In total, 3,826 people have been vaccinated, as at May 17, accounting for 45.4 per cent of the population.

Dr. Hinshaw announced Tuesday that 2.24 million doses have been administered by the province, pushing the numbers to over half of all Albertans.

Tuesday’s positivity rate remained high in the province at 11.4, which Hinshaw called concerning. She said last year at this time, Alberta had a 1.5 per cent positivity rate. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the province remain high, at 691, with 187 of those in ICU beds.

Flagstaff County is down to just 15 active cases.

2021 Lois Hole Community Leadership award for Literacy awarded locally Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Each year the Centre for Family Literacy (CFL) recognizes and celebrates individuals striving to improve literacy in Alberta.

To do this, they award the Lois Hole Memorial Literacy Award in one of three categories: adult learner, family learner, and community leadership to deserving recipients each year.

This year, Nanette Jones of Flagstaff Community Adult Learning has been named as the winner of the 2021 Lois Hole Memorial Community Leadership award.

This award recognizes an individual who has shown leadership in family literacy activities, raised funds for family literacy programs, and increased public awareness of family literacy issues.

CFL says, “Our winner this year, Nanette Jones, has excelled in all of these areas.”

Specifically, the group recognized Jones for her work in developing the very successful Building Blocks Family Literacy project.

“Nanette’s work includes building knowledge within Flagstaff County of how we use literacy every day - the daily activities we engage in that require literacy skills.”

For the CFL award judges, it was Jones’ work in family literacy which they found most compelling.

“Eight years ago, Nanette saw the need for family literacy programming in the county and ever since she has been working tirelessly to build a program to support families.

“She started from scratch, taking family literacy training, researching the right programs for the community, hiring staff, and finding funding.”

Jones is very reticent to speak of her accomplishments. She says, “To me, it’s about what we do together.”

Jones says when she started at Flagstaff Community Adult Learning (FCAL) there was no provincial funding available for family literacy.

At that time, she says she had trouble finding enough tutors for the adult learners she had, and was also aware there was a greater need that wasn’t being addressed, where people who needed supports were not signing up.

So she starting building relationships within the community to support individuals and families who needed assistance. It became clear to her that the way forward was to promote child literacy as a way to encourage more parents to sign up. “Building Blocks looks like a kid’s program, but we’re actually teaching adults how to support themselves and their children in literacy.”

Then it was a matter of funding, and finding the right person. Jones credits the Flagstaff County community with supplying the funding and support necessary to build the program.

In 2014, she started a 10week pilot, knowing that having the right person delivering this program would be key to its success.

She says, “I waited for Joanne McMahon. I had been waiting for the right person to come along. I told her the vision I had, and we found that we had a shared vision.”

After the first pilot program home visit, Jones says McMahon thanked her for giving back her love of teaching. She says that’s when she knew for sure McMahon was the perfect match.

Jones says, “Our purpose is to equip parents to help their children have success in school.” To that end, she adds, “We know that parents and grandparents are a child’s best first teacher.

“They want to know what the children need to have success in their learning journey. We believe that if the parents gain this knowledge, they can help all of their children.”

Jones credits the unbelievable success of the program, which has now helped 200 families in the Flagstaff region, to having expert facilitators.

She says, “There are now four high-quality, expert facilitators,” including McMahon, along with

Janet Gartner, Linda Coutts, and Megan Edey.

“They know they’re making a different in young families.”

She says back in 2014 she chose Building Blocks because it was customizable, and could be modified to meet the specific literacy needs required for Flagstaff County.

The program has evolved since the 2014 pilot, which started as oneon-one in-home visits.

“There was such a great need and wait list that we started the group program.”

Jones says an added benefit of the group program is providing an opportunity for participants to build social connections. She’s introduced a snack time as an opportunity for parents to come together as the children

enjoy a break.

The program can be custom designed, and Jones says through significant partnerships and local expertise, can be and has been enhanced.

She says she’s also very grateful for the local funding support it receives.

McMahon, who nominated Jones, says, “The Building Blocks Family Literacy Program would not exist without Nanette’s efforts in raising funds for this project. She has initiated all letter writing, grant writing, grant reporting, and community fundraising. “ Jones says, “It all goes towards building a strong community. With local funding and local facilitators, along with support from other local resources, we are helping Flagstaff families to succeed.”

Building Blocks is now offered in Daysland, Forestburg, Lougheed, and Hardisty, and is available to any resident of the county.

Jones feels extremely honoured to receive this award, but is determined to share the credit. “Lois Hole was a strong advocate of literacy, and this is a precious honour for us.

“It’s so meaningful to us because of all the amazing people who help up provide the many aspects of family literacy to our community.”

Jones also credits her coworkers at Flagstaff Community Adult Learning for always supporting her, including Lois Polege and former Director Val Rathjen.

I see that there is some work going on at the ski hill.

There is a for sale sign on Highway 36 at the top of the hill. It is Tanner and Amy Spady's house for sale up on the hill.

The Library Board is looking for a library manager. This is just for the two days a week that the library is open.

There was a trailer and truck stopped in at the Alliance campsite by the river. It is nice to see some tourists out.

A mother and daughter from Amisk enjoyed a

lunch purchased from the Alliance store and eaten in the park by the cenotaph.

They had been at Niccona Greenhouse and continued on to town.

Tina Ratcliffe's mother died on Mother's Day, making it a tough day for the family; especially since they haven't been able to visit. That special little Lizzy the dog died last month leaving another empty spot in Art and Tina's life.

NewWave WI is an online Women's Institute branch that is just getting going. An online branch is something that I have wanted to start, but didn't have the knowledge to.

Vickie and I watched a Rosebud Theater performance virtually on Sunday.

There is another one, Home and Country, coming up. It has a WI connection.

It is time for applications for the Alliance Ambassador Award to be submitted to me. This is the last year that the $100 will be given to a graduate who started in Alliance school.

Flavie has cut a bunch of trees at her place by the entrance to the sports grounds.

WI met and worked in the garden on Wednesday.

We have a new Arbor up there.

Stephen Wyse has my pantry cupboard doors, all 24 of them, hung nice and straight. He also repairs screens.

I am sorry to admit that I missed church on Sunday

simply because I sat down in the recliner with my feet up after breakfast and fell asleep.

Mary and Laurie Lockwood dropped in with a couple jars of exotic jams for me. They were up to the acreage where McKenzie and Blake are renting to prepare for a garage sale next weekend. They also took some stuff back to Calgary for a sale there.

Hans Bierman had a young fellow come look at his budgies flying in the outdoor aviary. The young fellow was with his mom at Bob's Corner Service and seemed a little bored. He liked the birds. Hans has 25 of them for sale. He says he will have to bring them in before we have this cold snap.

2021 Weed and Pest Inspector Appointments Council approved a motion to appoint Samantha Culbert, Sierra Freadrich, Mikayla Kuilboer and Matthew Pfeffer as Flagstaff County’s Weed and Pest Inspectors for 2021, under Section 7(1) of the Weed Control Act and under Section 9(1) of the Agricultural Pests Act. Review of Recreation Funding ICF Agreement Timelines Council approved a motion to proceed with commencing the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF) review regarding recreation funding prior to October 18th, 2021, municipal election.

Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS) Resolution Council approved a resolution for the formation of a society, as presented.

Ratepayer Request — Arterial Residential Dust Suppressant Council approved a motion to provide residents on arterial roads, a 200-metre MG 30 dust suppressant, free of charge, at a maximum of two applications per year, at a total approximate cost of $210,000 to be funded by Public Works Projects – Operating Reserves.

The Flagstaff County Imagination Library is sending out their books every month. Just last week we received a new one. The books received are age appropriate and we've been loving each one. It's quite nice to receive happy mail. The Imagination Library is lucky enough to be in a position to accept more families, of course fundraising efforts will be ongoing. We're currently serving 152 kids, which is fantastic, but only about a third of eligible families within the county. So please help us spread the word and make sure to tell your family and friends with children ages zero to five about this wonderful program. You can register with Joanne MacMahon or on the Imagination Li-

brary website. Thank you to all our supporters who make this possible.

The Town of Sedgewick is looking for 18 homes to participate in a free lead-testing program. Your drinking water must be both unsoftened and unfiltered.

Priority will be given to pre-1960 homes, but they’re also wanting to sample some 1960-1975 homes. Call the office if interested.

Faith: Truth and Freedom “Freedom!” the reverberating cry of William Wallace to 13th century Scots, depicted by Mel Gibson in the iconic film “Braveheart.” This is a word that has inspired millions of people down through the centuries to pick-up arms, move to a new country, seek political office; in short, it moved them to decisive action.

The problem is that the word freedom does not stand alone, for by itself it is a one legged stool; it has neither context nor meaning apart from another word of such tenor, “truth.”

Truth cannot be created, measured, quantified, or compromised. It remains for us an anchor point in relationship, business, community, and in short life. Truth is like the signpost on Highway 13 dispensing directions to our destination, so truth points us to freedom. Both Peter (1 Peter 2) and John (John 18) link freedom to the eternal properties of truth found

in the person and character of Jesus.

One of the worst things I have witnessed as a pastor is a child who is constantly the recipient of a lie. That lie either in action (abuse) or words slowly robs that child of their freedom not just as a child, but on into adulthood. Freedom of childhood is being surrounded by love while knowing there is purpose and meaning to life as they embrace a hope that transcends life.

During this tumultuous time of COVID-19 lockdowns, take time to contemplate the truth that leads to freedom, it is great for your mental health.

Remember Jesus said “I am the truth,” and “and the truth will set you free” (John 8).

Freedom is not an edict of the government but rather a relationship with the eternal. COVID-19 will one day be a distant memory, but freedom and truth will always remain.

Flagstaff County offers up many great choices for Victoria Day long weekend fun with the family Leslie Cholowsky Editor

May long weekend! It’s the time of year to dust off the camper, motorhome, or tent, or even just the picnic basket and cooler, and head out to enjoy the outdoors.

Flagstaff County features a number of great spots for you to do just that!

If fishing is your thing, there are three stocked ponds in the region just begging for you to check them out. Note that fishing licences are required for anyone 16 and older, and that there are limits on the number of fish you can catch each day.

The Daysland Trout Pond, located right in the town and bordering their beautiful golf course, is perfect for family or youth fishing. It is available for daytime use only.

Parking is available via the back alley between 52nd Street and 53rd Street. The pond is also accessible from the walking trails.

Surrounded by green grass and trees, the pond was restocked at the end of April.

The Diplomat Trout Pond is located in a campground owned and operated by Flagstaff County about 16 km from Forestburg off Secondary Highway 855. It offers a

nature trail, day camping, and overnight camping through a self-registration system. The pond contains rainbow and tiger trout and is stocked twice per year.

The Lougheed Trout Pond is also freshly stocked, and is perfect for a day of family fishing, with a big playground, walking trails, and a campground for overnight stays.

If fishing’s not your thing, but you still love the water, Flagstaff County has two terrific spots for you.

Sedgewick Lake Park campground is perfect for day or all-weekend visits. There are spots for campers, tents, and even a couple of cabins available to rent.

They have a big playground, nature trails, picnic areas, and even a wading pool and splash park (depending on COVID-19 restrictions, these may not be open this coming weekend.)

It’s just a short jaunt to the Sedgewick Golf Course, too!

Sedgewick Lake Park is the perfect backdrop for a scenic getaway.

Hardisty Lake is the ideal destination for those who enjoy the water, with a public beach and dock for pleasure boating. The campground boasts sites that

allow you to relax and enjoy nature in privacy, with a walking/driving path through the campground, and on-site playground, and an amazing golf course just minutes away.

Hardisty also features walking and hiking trails along the lake. Newly refurbished by volunteers, the paths are accessible at multiple entry points in town, and offer a mix of easy and more challenging hikes.

Most Flagstaff communities also boast walking paths that are definitely worth checking out, and also have in-town or nearby camping sites available for daytime or overnight use.

Forestburg has a campground and a beautiful golf course, one of three located in the county.

Killam’s Heritage Park has an outdoor ampitheatre, community piano, and lots of picnic spots as well as a playground.

Flagstaff County operates four campgrounds in and around the county.

Big Knife Park, while not in Flagstaff County, is nearby, located off Secondary Highway 855.

This is an Alberta Parks site, with overnight camping available, as well as daytime picnics, with opportunities for water sports such as canoeing and kayaking.

The park features some extraordinary walking and hiking trails. Big Knife Park currently has a fire ban in effect, and the province has posted a bear warning for the area.

There are also private campgrounds, like the Battle River Crossing Resort, who offer overnight camping and day use, and are located right along the Battle River.

Whatever your interests are, there’s no reason not to take time this weekend to explore Flagstaff and all this region has to offer!

Joyce Eileen Bergseth

November 9, 1939 to May 11, 2021 Joyce Eileen Bergseth (nee Shaw), age 81, passed away at the Medicine Hat Hospital on May 11, 2021.

Joyce was born in Hardisty, Alberta, on November 9, 1939, and is survived by her children Rick Bergseth (Trish), Dennis Bergseth (Jan), and Terrina Proudfoot (Scott); nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters Rhona

Overbo, Alice Jones (Bob), and Lorna Shaw; sister-in-law, Patti Sparrow; and sister in her heart, Irene Pfeffel.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Hazel Shaw; sisters, Joan Shaw, Edith Jensen, and Blanche Jones; and brothers, Clifford Shaw and George Shaw.

Joyce grew up on her parent’s farm north of Lougheed and, once married, moved a few miles south where she lived and raised a family.

Joyce did not shy away from hard work all of her life: milking cows early in the morning, taking care of young children amidst chores, and harvesting late into the evening.

In addition to farming, Joyce was well known for her beautiful yard filled with hundreds of

meticulously cared-for flowers and bountiful vegetable and fruit gardens that she shared with family and friends.

Joyce loved nature and understood the ups and downs of farming and the cycle of life.

In her retirement years, she spent time with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren creating lasting memories through enjoying the simple things: nature walks, eating ice cream on a park bench, and playing games together.

Joyce thoroughly enjoyed family gatherings and reunions and was known for being the first one to come and the last one to leave.

Joyce was a faithful member of St. Johns Anglican Church in Sedgewick all of her life and she contributed in whatever capacity she

could: making countless cakes and sandwiches for church events and during the summer months ensuring that flowers from her garden adorned the church altar.

Joyce was a kind, a caring, and a thoughtful friend. She volunteered for many years at the Good as New thrift shop and delivering Meals on Wheels in Sedgewick.

Joyce was always first to support friends and family doing whatever she could by lending a helping hand.

Six years ago, her own health issues required her to move to Medicine Hat. Joyce dealt with this change as she always did, with fortitude, grace, determination, and quiet acceptance. We have many treasured memories to hold in our hearts and our lives are richer because of

Securities Commission makes sanction The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) has sanctioned Nicholas John Felgate for breaching Alberta securities laws.

In an October 2020 decision, an ASC panel found that Felgate failed to comply with an interim cease trade order (Interim Order) that was issued by an ASC panel in March 2018 and extended twice.

The Interim Order was in effect in May 2019 when Felgate entered into agreements described as “Lender/ Loan Personal Non Securities Related Agreement” and “Promissory Note”, for a total of $300,000.

The ASC panel concluded that the agreements were securities and that Felgate traded in those securities, contrary to the Interim Order.

The panel ordered that Felgate pay an administrative penalty of $50,000 and be subject to an array of market access bans for five years from the date of the decision or the date his administrative penalty is paid in full, whichever is later.

The panel also ordered that Felgate pay $41,800 towards the

costs of the investigation and hearing.

In its decision, the panel noted that "Contraventions of ASC orders are self-evidently of a serious nature" and that "Felgate

This special day was first named more than a decade ago, in 2020, and is meant to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of family doctors in health care systems around the world.

This year’s day has a theme, “Building the future with family doctors,’ meant to highlight the role that family medicine and the primary care community, including family doctors, nurses, and members of primary care teams, play in our daily lives.

“Family physicians are the cornerstone of primary health care and deliver 80% of health care in our communities, building long-term relationships with their patients,” says ACFP Executive Director Terri Potter, “It’s the only medical specialty where physicians can provide care for a patient’s lifespan and in

many cases across multiple generations. World Family Doctor Day is an opportunity to recognize the special work family doctors do.”

Hello folks, everywhere you look farmers are busy seeding and so far the weather has been cooperative. Now all we need are a few days of gentle rain to turn the countryside green. It is just too darn dry.

The Wainwright army base had clouds of smoke rising from their area.

Their army helicopter was flying over our farm Sunday morning so I imagine they are busy with manoeuvers again.

Since we are on the topic of aircraft, I have a cute joke my friend shared with me. "A propeller is just like a big fan. It is in front of the pilot to keep him cool. When it stops, you can actually see that the pilot is starting to sweat!" Haha.

Hardisty's "walk for rocks" is completed now so I hope that you and your family found some rocks with numbers on them so you can win a prize. Kudos to Jamie Hendricks and her helpers for organizing this fun event.

The Hardisty nature trails were the brain child of Brittany MacMillan and she is organizing a virtual run on the Father's Day weekend. Check out her website: hardistytrailrun.ca. I checked out some trails and I must say Remedy Oilfield certainly did a great job brushing the trails to make them useable. Many thanks to a local business.

I wonder how many trail walkers have seen wildlife in their travels? I did not need to go far before I met wildlife right in the middle of Hardisty.

Two yearling moose trotted out in front of me one early evening.

They did not stop, they just sauntered along like they owned the place.

Looked at me and then moseyed down the back alley into Julie Pastor's

cul de sac. It makes me wonder if a mother moose would be this calm if a child or adult was ever between her and young moose calves. I just hope no one is ever injured. Locals are telling me that there is a multitude of rabbits around and also deer that are enjoying shrubs, trees, grasses, and flowers.

These interesting animals might just chew your yards bare. But don't worry there are lots of greenhouses in our area that can fill your needs.

The Hardisty United Church camp will unfortunately be closed again this year. The board is following the recommendations set out by Dr, Deena Henshaw. She felt that the camp was not a safe place for children and staff in these unpredictable times of COVID-19 and all the variants. This is so sad.

Let’s pray for a better year in 2022.

Lori Goodrich was looking for some donated paint to spruce up the canoe that is located under the camp sign, just off Highway 13. Thank you Lori for filling the canoe with lovely floral arrangements for the last few years. I hope the critters don't cause you any grief this year. Actually, since there is no camp maybe pretty plastic flowers might just be the answer?

Hardisty Lake Public Campground has been open since May 1. They have painted the picnic tables and everything looks so friendly, neat, and tidy. On Sunday there were people on the beach and kids shrieking with delight as they ran in and out of the water. I bet they were freezing their butts off, but kids are so resilient. We've already had campground visiters at our Thrift Shop; they loved our secondhand boutique and were impressed at all the eateries in town.

Many Hardisty and area folks are sad to hear

that Deena's Country Kitchen is closing her doors. The owner said farewell on social media and thanked her customers for supporting her the last four years.

Friends commented on her fabulous breakfasts, her pies, yummy liver and onions, and her fantastic dinner buns. We will miss you Deena and wish you all the best on your next endeavour.

Talking about buns made me think of the bun shaped hairpiece that I recently purchased. I was planning to regift it to a friend because it was not a good fit for my head. It was bedtime and I was busy removing the bobby pins that secured the bun.

Nature called me to sit on my biffy so I continued removing the pins. I stood up and turned around to attempt to flush the toilet and the darn hairpiece flew into the bowl. Yikes! It floated and thankfully did not plug the biffy. I whipped it out and immediately rinsed it and washed it.

The chemical urea had not even affected the colour or the curl of this tough hair bun.

Unfortunately I can't regift it now; it just wouldn't seem right.

How many of you have dropped glasses, hearing aides, dentures, or cell phones down your biffy?

I thought this might give you a chuckle.

Why seed treat? and Aphanomyces root rots, even if they were treated.

One of the worst early season pests for canola is the flea beetle. In some areas, an insecticide in the seed treatment in required just to ensure the crop makes it to the first true leaves. In Alberta, we have two main types of flea beetles that attack canola, the two stripe and the crucifer flea beetle. The insecticide portion of the seed treatment is not equally effective on both species and the two stripe flea beetles are less affected by the insecticide than the crucifer flea beetles. Over

time there has been a shift to primarily two stripe flea beetles. You can’t rely just on the seed treatment to protect your seedlings. Post seedling insecticides might be called for.

Here are a few pointers to consider if you wonder if you should use a seed treatment.

You should definitely use a seed treatment if you seed early, before the topsoil is above 5˚C. If you have a tight rotation of two crops you can easily build up pest levels in the soil which can kill off a large number of unprotected plants. If you try to economize on seeding

rates, you really can’t afford to lose many plants and a seed treatment is needed to preserve plant numbers.

When using seed treatments, it is a very good idea to alternate seed treatment groups.

Just as in herbicide, too frequent a use of one

particular active ingredient in a seed treatment can lead to resistance and a loss of efficacy of that fungicide. You lose one chemical in a group, consider the whole group as no longer effective. To keep these tools useful, change it up, once in a while, both

with crop rotation and seed treatment groups.

Good yields in the fall depend upon a healthy start from the seed in the spring. Use seed treatments judiciously, when needed and use good, agronomic practices to ensure your crops get a good start in the spring.

Seed treatment. Another cost and what’s the benefit? Seed treatment with a mix of fungicides and possibly insecticides, is a lot like an insurance policy.

Under ideal conditions at seeding you put your seed into the ground at just the perfect depth, moisture, and temperature and, quickly, up it comes!. Under soil temperatures at 10 degrees celcius and adequate moisture, the crop rapidly germinates, emerges, and begins the journey to a productive crop.

However, do you ever remember such an ideal spring? Usually, our springs have a habit of coming and going with winter showing up periodically up until May. This is where a seed treatment can pay. It’s a jungle out there, in the soil, with many competing fungi and organisms just looking for the right crop or seed to feed on.

A lack of variety in your cropping mix only increases the risks. Seed treatments are one way to prevent diseases and insects from taking out your crop seedling.

Don’t expect seed treatments to perform miracles, however. If you used diseased seed, poor germination, or poor seedling vigour, seed treatment will not be a miracle product and the crop will still do poorly.

Seed treatments are very good at combating seedling diseases, like smuts, that have spores on the seed coat. Some systemic fungicides are useful at preventing disease from entering and spreading through the new seedling. Others provide a zone of protection around the seed by killing off fungicide.

Seed treatments are usually good at protecting the seedling for about two weeks. Then the effects wear off. In peas, this can lead to later root diseases like Fusarium
