Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch holds successful gun courses Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch group recently held a two-day restricted and unrestricted gun course for women only at The Hive in Sedgewick, with a full house, and much interest in holding the course again, said organizers. The group gained three new members from the course, and the feedback from participants was very positive, the board heard. “The people who attended were appreciative of the women-only format,” said secretary Jan Bergseth, “they were very comfortable asking questions. It was a very diverse crowd.” She said that after the course was filled there were many inquiries about holding a similar event, this time for both men and women. The group has tentatively set the weekend of June 18 as the date of a second course with nonrestricted followed by restricted, with a maximum of 24 participants for each. “I think there were more

Lougheed fills vacant council seat Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Village of Lougheed held its Nomination Day on Monday, May 16, to fill a Council seat left by the passing of Hal Meek earlier this year. Lougheed CAO Karen O’Connor says that only one nomination was received, and that unofficially, the position has been filled by John Cole. Cole will be sworn in to his new role on Council during their next regular meeting, held this week, on Thursday, May 19.

than 24 people wanting to take it,” said Bergseth. Flagstaff Crime Watch is also working with Killam RCMP on the possibility of creating a future web cam registry for the region, where people with security cameras can voluntarily register to alert police of the presence of camera footage, and a willingness to share. The registry would not allow police access to the footage itself, but serves as a reference if camera footage is available for a certain location or date. Registrants would not be able to see other registrants, only the police would have access to a full list. Members of the Flagstaff Crime Watch group heard a presentation from a new regional citizens group, represented by Deanna Martz, who are interested in partnering and holding educational sessions about the justice system in Canada.

At an open house held a few years ago by Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch, speakers included a crown prosecutor and other crime experts covering this topic. Discussion on the proposal centred on holding a series of shorter presentations addressing different aspects of the system versus one long event. Crime Watch board member Lynne Jenkinson

said this aligns with the crime watch group’s goals of crime prevention through education and awareness. Both groups agreed to discuss the issue further. Members of the crime watch group also recently attended an informal meeting to discuss the potential of bringing fraud awareness seminars to the region. “Fraud is becoming a huge issue again,

and not just for seniors, but for everyone.” Plans are underway to hold a series of fraud pre-
