Bruderheim Ag. Society Carnival and rabbit show has strong support

BY JOHN MATHER The Edmonton Area Rabbit Society came to Bruderheim May 8 to 10 presenting the fourth Wild Rose Classic Rabbit Show.

“It’s been going really well,” said Treasurer Sharin Angler and the coordinator of the Bruderheim show.

“There were more than 210 entries today,” she said Saturday. “There were 21 different breeds exhibited at the

show with 40 exhibitors.”

Exhibitors came from B.C, across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba she added.

The judges for the event all came from the United States. She said the Society was really pleased with the number of people who came out to view the different types of rabbits and the market where a large variety of rabbit related products were for sale.

“We’ve had a lot of people from town and from the surrounding communities come in,” she said.

“We are very happy with Bruderheim,” she stated. “We enjoy this town so much. Bruderheim is such a wonderful host to us.”

She added when they talk with the exhibitors they are often told Bruderheim is their favourite show.

“We enjoy the venue and the town.”

Hope Barakat, from near Acme, brought some of her Rex rabbits to the show and also some rabbits belonging to a friend to have judged.

She said they had won a ribbon and her rabbits were showing very well.

In addition to the Wild Rose Classic, the Bruderheim Agricultural Society had a series of displays at the Walker School which attracted many people.

Hemp bales from failed Bruderheim plant up for auction

BY JANA SEMENIUK More than 20,000 tons of baled hemp are going up for auction next week, left over from the failed Canadian Rockies Hemp Corporation which ceased operations in the Town of Bruderheim last July.

The auctioneer company Mirterra said, in their online post, that 3,800 hemp straw bales will be available with bidding opening May 15.

The company described the bales as nutrient rich animal bedding in addition to a sustainable soil enhancer.

The enormous amount of left-over hemp bales has been a source of concern for many residents in the town, from worries about fires to

increasing the rodent population.

According to Let’s Talk Hemp, hemp is fire resistant when made into ‘hempcrete’, a hemplime composite used in building materials, but can spontaneously combust as any other organic material if improperly stored. The report stated that bales should be monitored for hot spots, and stored to allow for good air exchange.

As far as hemp bales providing a good home for mice, conflicting online reports state that hemp repels rodents, while at the same time advertising that hemp bedding makes a perfect home for them.

Some reports also state that rodents have no

problem making a home inside a cozy hemp bale.

Meanwhile, although the hemp bales will eventually be disposed of through the auction, there have been no official reports of a buyer for the former hemp facility, or names of any organizations who might be moving in.

The Canadian Rockies Hemp Corporation first came to Bruderheim in 2019, hoping to create a hemp processing facility that would break down the hemp plant to materials that could be used to manufacture several different products.

After increased debt accumulation in addition to many other setbacks, the company finally ceased operations in July 2024.

Harold is survived by his daughters, Laureen and Jody (Darcy), and his son, Jeremy; his grandchildren, Daniel, Breanna, Kayla, Raeanne, and Colton; his sister, Vivian, and brother, Gordon. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and close friend Chantal ZurBrigg.

He was predeceased by his father, Fred; mother, Irene; sister, Gloria; and brother, Bob. The family would like to thank the staff at Beaverhill Pioneer Lodge in Lamont for their care and dedication to Dad. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and physicians of Unit 43, Palliative Care, at the Grey Nuns Hospital for their compassion during his final days.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Opinion Can we expect some hope with a new Pope?

BY JOHN MATHER So it was busy news week last week. Many went to Rome with hope. And on Thursday they received a new pope in a puff of white smoke.

On the surface, it seems like this new Pope, Leo IVX, is a well rounded person.

Having been born and grown up in Chicago, he is the first North American pope, but he spent much of his career in Peru working amongst the poor.

He knows suffering and he knows humility, something lacking in some other Americans these days.

If fact, the announcement of the new Pope knocked CNN off its daily stream of Trump bashing which is quite a feat.

All in all, press coverage of the new Catholic leader was fair, balanced and as stated he appears to have been well received.

Except by Canadian indigenous communities who immediately threw up online posts demanding he further apologize for injustices wrought against them and return artifacts which they feel the Catholic Church has stolen over the years and hidden away in the Vatican vaults.

Newly minted Prime Minister Mark Carney went to Washington to visit the big bad Trump to ague against tariffs and against Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty.

While some mainstream media are trashing Carney for this meeting, I thought he held his own very well and along with most mainstream media I thought he bit his tongue when necessary and responded carefully when Trump went on a tirade as he is prone to do.

When addressing the issue of Canadian nationality, Trump spoke about it casually drawn on a map and spoke about how beautifully Canada could merge into the U.S. fold.

Carney in what was surely a scripted line said he had just consulted with Canada’a owners and like the White House or Buckingham Palace, Canada was not for sale.

This actually got a smile from Trump who suggested never say never, to which Carney replied never.

But when Carney held a press conference on the rooftop of the Canadian embassy, one French Canadian reporter showed just how out of touch many east of Manitoba are and how misinformation gets started.

Whether it was a translation problem or not, this reporter asked Carney, “What is your reaction to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wanting to separate from Canada?”

What a crock!!

CONTINUED I’m getting very sick of people down east, and even here in Wild Rose Country saying Smith wants to separate.

I’ve covered this Premier’s speeches and talks since before she became premier and never once have I heard her state she wants to separate.

On the contrary she often states she wants to work to keep this country together. But she does state if a group wants to put a petition forward on separation and they meet the criteria she won’t stand in its way.

Folks, that’s called democracy.

She recently moved a bill to allow referendums to be started with a lower signature threshold. As to what the petition says, she hasn’t put a rule in to cover that to the best of my knowledge.

A referendum could be held on declaring Fridays a provincial holiday, a Wednesday free ice cream afternoon, or it could be a referendum on separation!

She didn’t specify but she said if it meets the proper criteria it can proceed.

This then falls under citizen democracy. If the citizen’s favour the referendum a majority will support it. If not, then it will fail.

In my opinion while separation talk has ramped up following the federal election, it can die down just as quickly.

But it won’t go away if every mainstream media outlet continues to rant on about it, when it doesn’t deserve any coverage.

Further the NDP have claimed Smith is a separatist. This is why Naheed Nenshi operates out of a back room somewhere around the Legislature.

They know Smith has never supported sep-

aration yet they keep kicking this tired, unproven fable down the road.

In fact, at their AGM the NDP voted to separate from their Federal kin!

Or is it a bee in their bonnet because they have no practical policies of their own that they could present as alternatives?

Now back to Carney.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has written Carney to ask he speed up regulatory approval for utility right of ways into the Port of Churchill to speed up development of precious minerals and the export of oil and gas to offshore countries.

Even Ontario Premier Doug Ford has urged Carney to work with the west, in particular, Alberta and Saskatchewan, to allow additional capacity to get resources to tidewater.

Carney said during the election he wanted to make Canada an energy superpower.

So here is his chance to do that and work with the west, something unheard of in the past ten years.

If Carney can come up with a non belligerent cabinet that recognizes Canada as a country, rather than two provinces and some colonies, to produce financing to the two Laurentian elite provinces, then maybe there is a bright future on the horizon.

Carney has had, what I think, are a good two weeks in the PM’s office. Let’s hope he keeps on this right track of fence mending.

The west doesn’t want to own Canada but they want a fair deal on equal footing with the rest of the country.

If Carney’s listens and acts accordingly and the new Pope says a few prayers with a Hail Mary for Canada, things can start improving.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Make Us Laugh or Make Us Cry

BY HAZEL ANAKA In the last couple of weeks, I’ve been exposed to some cultural activities. The first was the latest in the Edmonton Public Library’s Speaker Series. The big name ladee-da author was humorist and comedian David Sedaris. I became aware of him several years ago because Hilary loves him. I don’t remember if this was my second time seeing him or the first. I saw him most recently as a guest on Real Time with Bill Maher.

Many consider Sedaris a genius for his depiction of the human condition, families, relationships.

Most great comedy resonates with us because of the underlying truth in the message. We see ourselves in the behaviour and the stories. If the delivery is smooth and polished, we lap it up. We are sophisticated

and open-minded enough to understand that any crude language is an essential tiny segment of that delivery.

Sedaris is 68 years-old, flamboyantly gay, and a wee bit strange. There may be slight tinge of his childhood lisp, OCD, and juvenile Tourette’s.

He’s been sober for more than 14 years. Though born in America, he spends most of his time in London with his partner Hugh. His sister Amy Sedaris is an actress.

Because this wasn’t Hilary’s first rodeo, she knew if she wanted one of her book’s signed by him, it’s far better to do it before the presentation than after. Organizers had allowed an hour prior but unfortunately the cut-off was a few bodies before Hilary’s. In the meantime, Ash and I grabbed fourth row seats in the area reserved for season subscribers.

Sedaris made an entrance. Apparently, he gets many of his clothes tailored in Japan. I totally missed what he was wearing on his upper body because my eyes were riveted on his white pantaloons, ankle socks, and silver brogue shoes.

At the end of his presentation, he did a short description of his outfit and a twirl. The ‘suit’ jacket had what can only be described as flaps on the back. Apparently, his shirt had ties which he chose to let hang free.

His pantaloons revealed his lily-white legs. Trust me, not everyone can pull off this look.

He read several recent essays and some diary entries from decades ago. Part of me wished I’d had the discipline to write a little something each day of my life. Can you imagine the treasure trove of info and insight?

It seems he’s a serious walker. He and his usual walking companion have literally walked their toenails right off in locales around the globe.

When he spoke about a mall on death watch, we didn’t know if it was Edmonton Centre or some other in the city.

Sedaris is known for his willingness to stay and sign books for as long as there are people in the lineup.

Supposedly, the record is nine hours. Can you imagine? He asks each person some ridiculous leading question that disarms them into blurt-

ing out something interesting. I guess at one such signing he asked a woman about a chimpanzee. She was horrified and asked if he could smell it? It seems she works at a zoo or shelter. The next day, he visited her at work. This tells me he is inordinately curious about life and is mining every interaction for writing fodder.

Can you picture a world where each of us gave a damn and took the time to listen to someone else’s story? And never

under-estimate the benefits of some old-fashioned laughing.

As I write this on Sunday evening, I’m back home from a Mother’s Day meal at Playwright before our Citadel performance of Little Women.

Playwright is the intimate little restaurant within the Citadel. The menu is short but all the food we ordered was tasty. And not every food joint has an electric chair as part of the décor, so there’s always that.

While Ash was one of the few men in the audience, all the females present had a chance to get reacquainted with the March girls Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy. The play was based on the novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. Over the years, there have been movie versions of this classic story set during the American Civil War. If there’s one takeaway from these two outings, it’s that a story well told is timeless and holds the power to make us laugh or make us cry, from where I sit.

Community pressure has Bruderheim Council change “restrictions” to full out “fire ban”

BY JOHN MATHER Bruderheim finally joined with the rest of Lamont County on May 8 in proclaiming a fire ban in the town.

Previously it had only issued a fire restriction despite a major wildfire blazing north of the community in Sturgeon County and dry windy weather persisting throughout the region.

This prompted Mayor Karl Hauch at the May 7 council meeting to say he had heard from many residents asking why there was no fire ban which would help prevent people riding offhighway vehicles along a right of way on the town’s Southside.

“With the very dry conditions and crazy winds there are a lot of areas in our town where kids are riding their dirt bikes and quads and I really think it would be prudent for our town to have an OHV ban during this time while we’re dealing with potential wildfires.”

Chief Administrative Officer Phyllis Forsyth said Section 307 of the off highway vehicle bylaw indicated that people operating OHVs in town had to be 14 years or older and travelling on the most direct route going to, or returning to, activities outside the town and if noticed to call911.

Hauch said people were riding in the town and there was concern they could start a fire.

“But they’re already banned your Worship,” replied Forsyth.

“We don’t allow them to be there now, the only thing we can do is call the police.”

Hauch asked, “If no one calls the police and there’s a fire then what?”

Deputy Mayor Dayna Jacobs said she knew it was OHVs they were talking about but wondered if the Town could just put a complete fire ban in Bruderheim “for the peace of mind for our residents.”

Forsyth said she had spoken with the Deputy Fire Chief of Strathcona County and the Lamont Fire Chief during the previous 24-hours and “they are in total agreement with Bruderheim having a fire restriction.”

“We don’t have burn barrels or brush piles,” she said.

Jacobs continued to ask for the ban for the peace of mind for the residents.

“That’s just my two cents.”

Forsyth said the difference wouldn’t really affect people riding OHVs in town because residents would still have to call the police.

“You can’t chase them down. We don’t have the manpower to do anything with them,” she stated.

Jacobs asked if OHV riders were going from point A to point B how did people know if they were riding through tall,

dry grass which could cause a fire.

Forsythe stated the bylaw stated the most direct route and when that bylaw had been enacted administration had wanted OHVs banned from being used in town completely.

“To change that we would have to rewrite the bylaw.”

Councillor George Campbell said the OHVs rode by his place all the time along the railroad tracks.

He said as far as he was concerned putting up signs stating there was a complete ban on OHV usage during a fire ban was the only tool the Town could employ right now.

“That may work,” he said. “Bylaw could come here and patrol but it is up to us to make sure people are aware and that they have to be responsible.”

“I just hope we don’t

have a fire,” he said.

“Where I live if a fire was to start it would take out several neighbouring buildings.”

He added there was nothing but tall grass to the west of his home into the west Woodlands area.

Forsyth said she had no problem following Lamont County on their fire ban but wanted to clarify the OHV restrictions.

“I have no problem with that at all, but I will bring the bylaw back to modify the OHV restrictions.”

Forsyth said she would make sure the fire ban was posted on highway signs entering the town.

The notice of ban appeared on several Bruderheim and area web sites the following day.

Sil Industries in the hot BRING THE seat at County coffee talk WHOLE FAMILY DOWN!

BY JANA SEMENIUK Lamont County held their last Coffee with a Councillor event, before the Oct. election, on Apr. 30 at the Mundare Senior Centre.

All five councillors, one from each division, attended which drew nearly 20 people out to express concerns and hear what the council had to say.

Lamont County resident Peter Lysick was the first to speak on an issue he said he has been battling for 13 years with his neighbour Sil Industries regarding the amount of noise coming from their property in addition to the amount of sand being deposited onto his cattle farm.

Lysick held a small plastic Ziploc sandwich bag partially filled with the grey coloured sand he said he scooped up from a two feet space on his land.

“How many times do you have to have a violation before something is done?” he asked. Lysick said that Sil is constantly using a section of land for sand storage despite being asked by the County repeatedly to remove it. He described strong winds that exasperated the issue.

“This is yesterday,” he said holding up his sandwich bag of sand. “Two square feet. Friday, the river. It was a super strong wind and Friday the river just got covered in sand. It was everywhere. As Sil’s neighbour what are we supposed to do? Just sit back and take it all? Keep phoning and attending meetings?”

Lysick said that he has 15 acres of land he cannot use for his cattle due to the amount of sand being deposited there.

“Sand stays there unless you wash it off. I can’t pasture cattle (there),” he said, adding he worries about what he and his family are breathing in from the sand blowing around.

Why can’t she open the bedroom window in her house? She’s been there her whole life.”

Lysick said Sil had been a good neighbour for 20 years until 2012.

“By 2012 is when we started getting hold of the county because of the noise and all those huge issues. In 2018 they expanded and we started having dust problems,” he said.

“They’ve been a good neighbour for 20 years but all of a sudden everything changed.”

Chief Administrative Officer Peter Tarnawsky said the county is bound to the conditions on the development permit.

“We have spoken to them about some sort of mesh fence. We need to find out whether there’s more opportunity to do that. We are hostage to the development permit but we’re also trying to influence them,” he said.

“What can you do?

David Diduck said that Sil contributes a large amount of money to the county.

“They pay $600,000 in taxes in a year. And in addition to that, they paid $168,000 in aggregate Levy,” said Diduck.

“So, and I know that we're always in a back and forth here, Peter, but it's kind of balancing a good industrial partner with a good individual ratepayer and it’s a matter of trying to find the right balance here so that we can make these two things work.”

Lysick charged back that the amount of taxes Sil pays “doesn’t give them the right to put sand on us”.

Councillor Neil Woitas spoke up and agreed with Lysick.

“Peter, I don’t care if it’s a million dollars in taxes. Health is more important than money,” he said. “I really don’t care about the taxes they are paying. Keep the sand on your property.”

The county will not be holding another coffee with a councillor event until after the upcoming municipal election on Oct. 20.

Daylight smash and grab at Bruderheim Liquor Store

BY JANA SEMENIUK Brazen thieves targeted the Bruderheim Liquor Store May 12, crashing the side of the building with their vehicle before stealing some liquor and speeding away.

The Bruderheim Liquor Store is located next to the Esso gas station, kitty corner from the local school and across the street from the Bruderheim day care.

Children just began their school day when the theft happened between 8 and 9 a.m. just before staff showed up to open the store.

Owner Michelle Walker is devastated.

“I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do,” she said, staring at bentup sheets of white siding pushed into a gaping hole in the wall of her store.

Walker said she bought the store three years ago and runs it with her son and another employee.

One witness, who did not remain at the scene due to prior work com-

mitments, told his girlfriend he saw between three and four men pull off the crime.

“All he said was he saw three or four guys dressed in black with balaclavas on, taking a bunch of booze out and then pulled out and left down highway 45,” said the girlfriend who was at the scene. She added that her boyfriend called 911 before continuing onto a work commitment.

Meanwhile, other witnesses came forward on social media to say they saw two vehicles involved in the theft, a white chevy and a maroon coloured chevy.

As police were interviewing witnesses, including the owner’s son who had video surveillance, Lamont County Emergency Services arrived in a fire truck with Regional Fire Chief Bo Moore and Deputy Fire Chief Scott Calder close behind.

As the first responders were determining whether they were needed at the scene, a call

came in for LCES to respond to a vehicle fire nearby.

Jay Zaal, Lamont County Communications Coordinator, confirmed that crews from Bruderheim and Lamont responded to a motor vehicle collision at 9:14 a.m. and were re-directed at 9:22 a.m. to a vehicle fire on range road 203.

“Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire before it spread to the grass and surrounding trees. Upon extinguishment, scene was turned over to the RCMP,” said Zaal by email.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said police were called at 8:47 a.m. to a break-in in progress at the Bruderheim Liquor Store.

Charge win first ever playoff game in PWHL

BY JOHN MATHER Ottawa Charge won its first playoff game in team history with a 3-2 win over the Montreal Victoire in their best of five playoff series.

Played in Montreal May 7, Shiann Darkangelo scored the game winner breaking a 2-2 tie midway through the third period.

Brianne Jenner opened the scoring for Ottawa early in the first period.

Montreal tied the score before the end of the first frame and then Ashton

Bell scored to put Ottawa back on top at the fiveminute mark of the second period.

The Victoire fired 33 shots at Gwyneth Philips, playing in goal as a replacement for the injured Emerance Maschmeyer, from Bruderheim.

Ottawa fired 27 shots at the Montreal net.

In the second game, May 11, the two teams went to four overtime periods before Montreal’s Catherine Dubois put the puck past

Philips to finish the game in favour of the Victoire.

Philips stopped 53 of 56 shots she faced, while Montreal goalie AnnRenee Desbiens stopped 63 of the 65 shots she faced to secure the win.

The third game in the series was scheduled for May 13 in Ottawa and then the fourth game will be played May 16.

If the fifth game is necessary it will be played back in Montreal on May 18.

Fire damage delays opening of Ukrainian Village

BY JOHN MATHER The opening day of Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village of May 17, 2025 has been delayed and the annual Celebration of Dance event is cancelled.

On April 18, 2025, a devastating grass fire broke out at a property near the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, which quickly spread due to dry conditions and high winds.

While no historic buildings were lost at the Village just east of Elk Island National Park, the Information Centre which also contained public washrooms, a gift shop and administrative offices was destroyed.

Minister of Arts,

Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir said at the time it was a profound loss for not only the Ukrainian community but all Albertans.

The fire was quickly spread by high winds and dry grass.

The Alberta government is committed to reopening the site when it is safe and appropriate to do so.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and truly appreciate your understanding at this time and look forward to welcoming you back when we can open our doors again,” the government reported in a Facebook post.

Fort Sask Veg CA board acclaimed - adds two new directors

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville Constituency Association (CA) held its annual AGM May 10, drawing nearly 150 people out to the Vegreville Social Centre.

Board members including President Ruven Rajoo, Chief Financial Officer Sheryl Cymbaliuk, and Secretary Renee Roberge were acclaimed while 31 candidates stood hoping to be elected for 27 positions as directors on the board.

Special guests included MLA from Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul Scott Cyr and MLA of VermilionL l o y d m i n s t e r - Wa i n wright Garth Roswell.

Additionally, several members of the Provincial CA board were present including the Central Alberta Director Abigail Schimke, UCP President Rob Smith, Director Vicki Kozmak and Central Alberta Regional Director Al Beil.

As Schimke, who was named returning officer for the election, got up to speak, she said that due to a fire risk, attendees would be allowed to place their votes prior to any of the 31 candidates speaking to support their run for a seat.

“Jackie (ArmstrongHomeniuk-MLA) mentioned today that there are lots of fires happening, and so after the nominations have been given, instead of letting everyone do their 30 seconds (to speak) I will let people fill out their ballot and vote then I'll let everyone speak. In case some people do have to leave and get back to their fires,” said Schimke.

A large group of people rose to cast their votes before the candidates were invited to speak.

Of the 31 names on the ballot for director, only nine chose to speak, including Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch, and Andrew Deputy Mayor Merwin Haight.

“I believe it's important that each one of us here take our time to volunteer, help out, be part of our community, and being here tonight and voting is part of that democracy,” said Haight.

Hauch praised MLA Armstrong-Homeniuk and expressed his gratitude.

“I'm honoured and humbled to be nominated for this position. I'm grateful to be able to serve with our MLA Jackie, who I believe is the best MLA In Alberta,” he said.

When the elected directors were announced, the list remained largely unchanged from last year with two exceptions; former director Cam Davies and Michelle Henderson were not on the ballot this year. In their place, elected this year, are Jessica Arsenault, employee for the Alberta Legislature, and Adam Kozakiewicz, CAO of Two Hills.

Lamont modifies roads bans county-wide

BY JOHN MATHER The County of Lamont under its bylaw 869.23 has modified the road bans across the County effective as of May 14.

Roads banned to 50 per cent of axle weight will be: Rge. Rd. 195 from Twp. Rd. 550 south

to Twp. Rd. 535; Twp. Rd. 550 from Rge. Rd. 204 to Highway 831/Highway15; Twp. Rd. 534 from Highway 855 to Rge. Rd. 170 (Hospital Road); Rge. Rd. 195 from Highway 16 to Blackfoot Camp; Twp. Rd. 533 from

Highway 831 to Highway 15; the Hamlet of Hilliard Streets; and Twp. Rd. 561 including the Hamlet of Star from Highway 831 to Rge. Rd. 193.

Criminals lied, after PowerSchool ransom didn’t delete sensitive info

BY JANA SEMENIUK School boards across the province were shocked to learn last week that criminals, who hacked into the PowerSchool data base in Dec., did not delete the stolen information as they promised after receiving a ransom to do so.

The PowerSchool company, based out of California, has not revealed how much they paid the hackers for the ransom.

The surprising development was revealed after many school boards experienced extortion attempts with the stolen information.

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) updated school families around the issue on May 8, and

said that so far they have not been contacted by the ‘threat actors’.

“To date, EIPS has not been contacted by this individual but it’s important to ensure school families are aware of what is taking place,” they said in their notice.

“The protection of student and staff data is important to us, and we’re taking this security breach seriously.”

EIPS has stated they have not paid any ransoms and did not contribute to the initial ransom payment.

In assuring families, PowerSchool shared that they are offering two years of free identity protection through Experian to those affected by the breach. In March, those whose information was

compromised received direct email communication around the service.

The deadline to enroll is July 30.

According to reports, a PowerSchool administrator account, used to provide tech support, was compromised in Dec. leading to the data breach of staff and students’ names, contact information, birth dates, social insurance number, and other related information for PowerSchool users across Canada.

According to media reports, an IP address belonging to a website and virtual hosting company in Ukraine has been linked to the stolen data. EIPS are one of hundreds of school boards using the data base service.

Ukraine war photo exhibit to be displayed in Chipman for fundraiser

BY JANA SEMENIUK A Chipman event, aiming to support first responders in Ukraine, will offer a first-hand glimpse into the world of war by way of a photo exhibit titled ‘Unbreakable Ukraine’.

Kevin Royle, Project Director for Firefighter Aid Ukraine, said the organization has helped send tons of rescue equipment and medical supplies to Ukraine supporting their war effort.

He said the group also has two teams going over in the near future to teach water rescue.

“In our travels there we have seen a lot of destruction and devastation,” Royle told a crowd at the recent Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville Constituency AGM on May 10.

Meanwhile, Chipman Village Councillor Trudy Smith who organized the event for Chipman, said she has volunteered several times over the past few years to help the Firefighter Aid to Ukraine in gathering and shipping equipment. She

said it’s a worthy cause and is happy to help put together an event in Chipman.

“We’re going to have the Lamont (Veselka) Ukrainian Dancers (perform) and Charlie Gargus (will) play the fiddle,” she said. “(We’re) supporting the firefighters in Ukraine that are doing this right now. They want awareness.”

The event is scheduled for May 24 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chipman National Hall.

Town asked to water school plants but no manpower citizens group may take-over

BY JOHN MATHER During the May 7 regular council meeting Councillor Arlie Young asked if there was any chance the Town could do watering of some raspberry and strawberry plants at the Bruderheim School during the summer.

The school has launched a project to have students plant the garden boxes, but they do need some help in maintaining them during the summer months.

Chief Administrative Officer Phyllis Forsyth said that wouldn’t be possible.

“I know it only seems like it would take another 20 minutes or half an hour, but we really don’t have any additional manpower to do any more,” she said. “We already do the grass cutting for the school in the summer and we charge them for that.”

Young asked if they could charge a “couple of bucks extra” to do the watering but Forsyth said she didn’t think the Town had the resources to do that this year.

“Elk Island Schools does have maintenance crews out during the summer as well,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Dayna Jacobs asked if it was a group of people wanting to put the plants in and Young replied it was the school.

He said planter boxes would be planted at the

front of the school.

Councillor George Campbell stated planter boxes were not good for raspberry plants.

“They dry out so fast.”

Councillor Len Falardeau said “Raspberries are a wonderful thing to eat, but they are a horrendous thing to take care of.

They spread like wildfire, like a dandelion.

“They are hard to control. Maintenance on them is difficult to control.”

Mayor Karl Hauch felt there was room for negotiation of some kind.

“This is an improvement that would look good for our school and community,” he said. “It would be nice if there was some way we could help them out.”

He thought the idea was from the school parent advisory council and not the school district itself.

Jacobs wondered if they could plant something but also said, “if the kids are out of school are they going to utilize this?”

Young said he would ask some further questions and bring it back to council.

Within a day town resident Jana Semeniuk sent a Facebook Post asking for volunteers to help with the project during the summer months and said she received several responses from people willing to help out.

Falardeau questions Bruderheim election costs

BY JOHN MATHER Councillor Len Falardeau expressed concerns during the Bruderheim May 7 council meeting about paying ”an astronomical fee” to the Town’s returning officer for the upcoming election after reading the article regarding election costs in the April 30 Lamont Leader.

In that article, writer Jana Semeniuk pointed out Bruderheim was spending more than $50,000 for the upcoming October election.

Chief Administrative Officer Phyllis Forsyth was quoted in the article, “the estimated municipal election expenses amount to $53,196,” adding another $10,000 will be spent on mandatory orientation for the incoming elected officials.

Forsyth added the costs were due to former staff member Sherry Cote being rehired as the Town’s returning officer while also working in the town offices for 2.5 hours per week since January.

Falardeau said he had researched the issue and found most of the neighbouring communities were only spending about $4,000 on their municipal election expenses.

“We’re way out of

touch with reality here,” stated Falardeau. He said after looking into it anybody could be appointed as the returning officer.

He said it was a simple course to take and he didn’t feel the Town should be paying such “an astronomical amount” for a returning officer.

“I was quite shocked when I saw this. We should never have paid this much money. I feel we have to correct this and correct it quickly.”

He said the County of Lamont after talking with them, because they have polling stations in several locations across the five divisions, have higher costs.

He said other communities were spending between $2,000 to $4,000, He wanted administration to come back and

correct this because “this is making us look really, really bad.”

Forsyth responded by saying she has read the same article in the Leader and, “I will say I believe the Town of Bruderheim is being transparent with its residents in what it costs to run an election.”

She said other municipalities' election costs were based more on supplies and didn’t include staff time.

“Until after the election we are required to have returning officer training and the new legislation requires us to have a new electors list which is a ton of work and we had to appoint the returning officer in January.”

She added council had thoroughly discussed the election costs and its

Falardeau said he wanted to see the Town’s costs tossed out until the election day.

“We don’t need that cost,” he stated.

Deputy Mayor Dayna Jacobs said she remembered discussing the issue during budget and asked Forsyth if she could send those discussion minutes to council so they could review them.

She added she felt it was Falardeau versus the administration at this point and she wanted to see what they had dis-

cussed in the past.

“Let’s just get the facts sent to us and then review the situation,” she said. “I’d just like to get some more information.”

Campbell said he agreed with Jacobs.

“All in all I think all the things have been covered and in a very professional way,” he said.”I don’t care how other communities do things, I think it’s more important that we have all the information when we make a decision and I think we have been given that.

“We’ve put all the numbers on the table and I think we should vote on the motion and be finished with it.”

When council voted on Falardeau’s motion it was defeated.
