BLACK BEAR SPOTTED
Patricia Harcourt Editor
A close encounter of the bear kind was enough to scare a local couple out for an evening stroll on their farm. As Dawn Hodgins relates it, Bart and Jamie Hodgins encountered the little black bear on Sunday (Mother’s Day) about 300 yards down the road, south of the Hodgins’ farm sites. “He was playing on the road and as they approached he quickly scurried up a roadside tree,” stated Dawn. “Never in our life times have we seen a bear in this area,” she
said. “The family is feeling quite unnerved as they spend lots of time outdoors and walk this road every day.” She described the bear as small in size. “It might be a yearling,” she said, suspecting its mother might still be with him. As it was Mother’s Day, “we suspect that MOM was lurking some place close in the trees,” she said. Since mother bears are known to be fiercely protective of their offspring, that might be another reason not to take a walk for a while!
