Canada Day fireworks, camping a go for Mundare BY JOHN MATHER Mundare Council heard from Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla on Mar. 16 at their regular meeting, that the town had been approved for a $1,250 grant for Canada Day activities. “With Covid, I don’t know if we want to plan for Canada Day and then cancel it, or what do you want to do?,” he wondered. He said he had gone ahead and arranged for the purchase of fireworks so there would be a fireworks display on the Canada Day evening. “If we go ahead and book some entertainment and then either we cancel it or they can’t perform because of restrictions we may lose our deposit,” he said. “I think maybe just have the fireworks.” Councillor Jason Kowal said he was 100 per cent in favour of going ahead with the fireworks but wondered what alternatives may be available for entertainment. “Maybe we could have some things open up and just do some local things on the main street. Maybe someone could set up a stereo and blast some tunes. Rent a DJ.” Mayor Mike Saric said some local businesses might want to open and put on some festivities and if a DJ could be found that could work out well. Councillor Irene Talaga suggested if council was to keep the day local they could hold off making a decision on what to proceed with until the May council meeting, which would still give them time to finalize some events. Kowal asked how much had been spent on the fireworks and Zyla replied it was $2,500. “We could reach out to our neighbours and see what they are planning and maybe we could get together and do some events together. It could be an opportunity to showcase some of our local activities amongst ourselves.” Another suggestion was to invite people to decorate their homes and turn it into a contest. A motion was passed to bring it back to a future meeting. Zyla also sought council advice on what to do with Ukrainia Park this summer. He has had requests for camping for wedding events, and another person has come forward to put on a ball tournament. Continued on Page 2
