Sedgewick stands in strong support of Ukraine Sedgewick Town Council voted during their March 17 meeting to fly the Ukrainian flag on the flagpole in front of the Town office. “Russia began a military invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 which is now Europe’s largest conventional military attack since World War II. The invasion is considered to have violated the Charter of the United Nations and constituted a crime of aggression according to international criminal law. The Government of Canada has condemned ‘in the strongest possible terms’ Russia’s egregious attack on Ukraine.” The situation has been deemed as an unfolding humanitarian crisis. The Town of Sedgewick Council wishes to bring continued awareness to the issue by raising the Ukraine Flag on Main Street. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine and their loved ones.” Should readers wish to donate to Ukraine’s cause they can at https://cufoundation.ca

MP Kurek named in retaliatory sanctions by Russia; ‘a badge of honour’ Leslie Cholowsky Editor

On Tuesday, March 15, the Russian government imposed sanctions against most Canadian Parliamentarians and Ukrainian Canadian leaders, including Member of Parliament for Battle River—Crowfoot, Damien Kurek. These sanctions came on the same day Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed Canadian Parliament via Zoom in a special sitting. In a social media post the same day, Kurek said, “I consider this a badge of honour, and you can be sure these threats won't stop me from continuing to stand up for what's right.” He went on to state; “The Government of Russia imposed these sanctions following strong action by the Canadian government against Russia and in support of Ukraine. The Conservative Party is calling for even more action, including the immediate ban of Russian oil imports. Canada has enough energy to fuel Canada and Europe. There is no reason that we should be importing Russian oil products, and there is no reason we shouldn’t build the infrastructure to help ensure Europe doesn’t need the help of Russia either. “The people of Ukraine deserve their sovereignty and the ability to live in peace, and Putin and the Russian Government need to be held accountable for their aggression. It is Canada’s responsibility to do whatever we can to ensure this happens.”

FRESS holding grain rescue training and safety displays Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County’s firefighters will have an opportunity to perform live grain bin rescue training this coming Saturday, March 26. There will also be an opportunity for the public to tour the Killam Fire Hall along with other farm safety displays. FRESS Manager and Regional Fire Chief Derek Homme says Killam Fire Chief Joe Knievel and Deputy Chief Rick Krys took this training last year at another location. After purchasing tools necessary for this type of rescue, the two also proposed bringing a local training session back to Killam. This was pre-FRESS, who is now involved in the delivery of firefighter training in the region. “We are now bringing the course to all Flagstaff firefighters,” says Homme. Knievel noted that in discussions of the upcoming demonstration, which is part two of the training, two of nine people in the group he was with had directly experienced or been around an incident regarding grain handling safety. “That reinforced the need to have this training locally,” he said. Firefighters have been busy preparing for the physical demonstration by completing the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association’s (CASA) ‘Introduction to Grain Handling and Storage Hazards ‘ online course, a prerequisite to the Grain Rescue Training, funded by FRESS. A free version of the course is also available to the public through the CASA website (casa-acsa.ca). When discussions on where and when the physical training component would take place, Homme and Knievel suggested that the Killam Fire Hall would be a good central location. Homme, as Regional Manager and Fire Chief for FRESS, moved into the Killam Fire Hall as his perma-

The event also includes a free barbeque, served by firefighters, and sponsored by Meridian Grain bin manufacturer and Viterra. Viterra has also made a donation towards the purchase of rescue helmets for the bin rescue equipment kit. To facilitate the physical demonstration and training, CASA’s BeGrainSafe Trailer will be onsite.

The trailer has a built-in silo, with capacity for 7,000lbs of grain, with a demonstration platform that includes machinery for lowering a mannequin (or person) into the grain. Once entrapped, trainees, along with CASA trainers, will demonstrate a rescue, displayed on a webcam with TV monitors to bring the rescue to the audience. The BeGrainSafe trailer also comes with interactive displays and activities related to grain safety, for adults and kids alike.
