Lamont Pharmacy can give Covid-19 vaccines Owner hopes supply arrives this week BY JANA SEMENIUK Alberta Health Services confirmed by press release the start of phase 2A for COVID-19 immunizations at 8 a.m. on Mar. 15. This next phase of inoculations will target Albertans born between 1947 and 1956, as well as First Nations, Inuit and Métis born in 1971 or earlier. Additionally, participating pharmacies will begin opening appointments to all Phase 2A groups in order to schedule their vaccines. According to the Alberta Blue Cross website, Lamont County has only one participating pharmacy; Value Drug Mart in Lamont. “We’ve been approved to administer it, but we
are still waiting for supply to arrive,” said Lamont Value Drug Mart owner and pharmacist, Robert Bilan. “It sounds like they had some distribution issues.” The website further states that pharmacies were chosen to participate in the program based on geographic and population needs as well as a demonstrated ability to handle large volumes of immunizations in short time frames. A total of 102 Alberta pharmacies were anticipated to be taking part at the onset. In the meantime, Bilan said large numbers of customers have been calling for more information. “We have been having a lot more phone calls
than usual around the vaccine. I’d say about 50 or so a day,” he said. “The first 15 minutes the store was open today at least 10 people called about the vaccine. I would just hang up from one short conversation then another call would come in.” Bilan added that he won’t be able to book any appointments until they have a supply of the vaccine on hand. “They confirmed the supply should arrive this week, but they told us that last week too and then sent an email saying it would be later,” said Bilan. “We’re taking names and once the product arrives, we will call people from the list randomly to make it as fair as possible.”

Heartland Industrial area preps for busy turnaround season BY JOHN MATHER Expect to see busier traffic patterns as Alberta’s Industrial Heartland area gears up for a very busy turnaround season. Shell Scotford will see two turnarounds take place this year including the first one ever for Shell Quest. At its peak in April the site will have an additional 500 workers on site while the mega turnaround planned to take place in September and October will see about 4,000 workers on site. Many turnarounds have been delayed because of the pandemic, so some plants will have more than one. Dow Canada leads this pack with four planned turnarounds beginning in April. “This is a big year for Dow,” said Dow’s Alberta Operations site director, Catherine
Costin. “We are celebrating our diamond anniversary, 60 years in Fort Saskatchewan, but we’re going through several turnarounds with the largest occurring in the fall.” The turnarounds have significant impacts on the communities in the area including Lamont County, as workers flood in to fill the many available jobs. Spending on goods and services increases during turnarounds. Laurie Danielson, executive director of the Northeast Capital Industrial Association, stresses that while the focus on safety and emergency preparedness is not new to the industries in the area, they have had to make significant adjustments to prevent the spread of Covid19. “With the number of workers expected on site
for larger turnarounds, our member companies will continue to ensure they are accountable and responsible to the public providing transparent, timely, and two-way communications with community members.” Turnarounds beginning in March and continuing into April and May will be at: Air Liquide, Bunge, Dow Canada, Evonik, Keyera, Pembina, Plains Midstream, and Shell Quest. Summer turnarounds during June, July and August will occur at: Dow Canada, Evonik, Keyera, MEGlobal, Nutrien Redwater, Oerlikon, Sherritt International, and Umicore. Fall turnarounds in September and October will take place at: Air Liquide, Dow Canada, Nutrien Redwater, and Shell Scotford.
Students send cards of joy to Lamont Health Care Centre residents BY JOHN MATHER Students at Lamont Elementary School have enjoyed visiting the local seniors home and the Lamont Health Care Centre in recent years to cheer up the residents. It one of the initiatives undertaken by the school to promote random acts of kindness which are emphasized not only in Lamont but throughout the Elk Island Public Schools community. Despite the pandemic not allowing in person visits this year, Grade one teachers Sarah Janssen and Leah Galloway worked to come up with other ways
the students could continue to spread cheer. “We didn’t want to lose the connection we’ve been able to make, so we started looking for other ways to stay in touch,” said Janssen. “The visit from the students had become treasured memories for many of the residents.” Inspired by the recent Pink Shirt Day, and its mission to spread kindness, the students began to write cards and create artwork which they sent to the Lamont Health Care residents. The residents were delighted to receive the cards and art and have
displayed them on walls and in windows for all to see. “I felt really good spreading kindness with our cards,” says Eleanor, a Grade 1 student at Lamont Elementary. “It makes other people feel happy, and it makes me feel happy too.” The Grade 1 classes plan to continue their physically distant connections with the Lamont Health Care Centre and plan to send a second round of cards and artwork when students return from spring break.

Opinion Cryptic sale of crypto art for cryptocurrency confusing BY JOHN MATHER I can tell I’m growing old, when I read or see things that completely leave me speechless. My father used to be quite fond of saying, “a fool and his money are soon parted’” and while I know he didn’t invent the phrase it certainly came to mind this past week when I read the results of an auction sale. Christie's, the world-famous auction house in New York sold a piece of “crypto art” for $60.25 million. That’s right $60.25 million. Certainly not chump change in my book. But then I asked myself what is “crypto art?” Apparently it’s something called a non-fungible token... and that left me even more confused. This piece of work entitled “Everydays: The first 5,000 Days,” was constructed by an artist named Mike Winklemann, but in the world of non-fungible token he is better known as Beeple. With his artwork, is a digital certificate of authenticity that runs on blockchain technology. If you’re older than 50 and still with me, amazing. If you’re 20 to 50 you probably understand this completely and are asking “what’s the problem.” Well, let’s get to the next interesting piece of information from this digital world. The artwork (I’ll refer to it as that from now on) was purchased, it is assumed, by collector Justin Sun who is the founder of the cryptocurrency platform Tron. A Tron spokesperson said Sun had bid $60.25 million and that appeared to be the winning bid although the actual purchaser was never named. “The first day of bidding was one of the most magical events in my auction career,” said Noah Davis, a specialist at Christie’s who organized the sale. “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Unlike some of Beeple’s other artworks, Everydays doesn’t come with anything physical (a box, a plaque) attached. Nevertheless, bidding opened at $100 on February 25th. In the first eight minutes of bidding, Mr. Davis said, about 20 bidders pushed the work to $1 million. The sale’s final minutes were even wilder, with bidding and drama that was unprecedented in modern auction history. An hour before the sale closed, bids were floating at about $14 million; in the last 10 minutes the price jumped to $22 million, then $27 million, then to $35 million, and then, when there were just seconds left on the clock, to $50 million, and then a staggering $60 million. The official hammer was $60.25 million, plus an extra $9 million for Christie’s. Continued
CONTINUED And for this sale, Christie’s accepted payment in Ethereum the second most popular cryptocurrency after Bitcoin. Given the wild volatility of cryptocurrencies, Christie’s may be taking a risk accepting its premium in Ethereum. The second-biggest digital coin lost 50 per cent of its value on Feb. 22, sinking as low as $700. Cryptocurrency is a digital asset designed to work as a medium of exchange wherein individual coin ownership records are stored in a ledger existing in a form of computerized database using strong cryptography to secure transaction records, to control the creation of additional coins, and to verify the transfer of coin ownership. Bitcoin started the cryptocurrency movement in 2009.
Ethereum is the most actively used in blockchain. A blockchain is a continuously growing list of records, called blocks, which are linked and secured using cryptography. And crypto art is published directly on to a blockchain. This is all cloud speak. This stuff all exists in the digital /computerized/ cloud. I know I get photos uploaded to the cloud but I have no idea where “the cloud” is. I think it is in a server network located in a well chilled warehouse somewhere on earth. After that I haven’t a clue. Now, Everydays the artwork was based on creating a single piece of artwork every day beginning in 2007. Beeple even created art through his wedding day and birth of his children. The Charleston, South Carolina artist has produced visual artwork for artists such
as Arianne Grande, Justin Bieber, and Nicki Minaj. So after all this, what? I don’t understand... is there no hard copy of this art? The millions paid for it were done using something not based on a gold standard. So what did the purchaser end up getting and what did he pay? Remember… a fool and his money… Really in my world concept, I have no idea what transpired in this major transaction. But it seems many are excited about it. Not me. If this is the way of the future after I have passed and my soul has gone to the cloud I have known about all my life, when my body is laid to rest, let it be in my very own bricks and mortar crypt. That crypt and cloud are the ones I can comprehend.

FROM WHERE I SIT: That’s All Folks
BY HAZEL ANAKA This week will be another mishmash of topics ranging from good news to a mini rant. As I’ve said before it’s not easy coming up with material week after week when the past year has felt like the movie Groundhog Day. It’s also tougher since I’ve stopped watching the Trump spectacle play out hourly on MSNBC and CNN. I’ve even stopped watching the Canadian political shows: Power Play, Power and Politics, Rosemary Barton Live, and Question Period. I’ve stopped watching the daily Covid briefings. Usually I’m about a week behind reading the Edmonton Journal. I haven’t even watched a full hour of the evening news in many, many days. What I have done is binge-watch several Netflix limited series. It’s either on in my office cum studio as I work or in the bedroom long after my bedtime. All of which leads me to some recommendations if you love crime dramas and don’t mind puzzling your way
through foreign accents (English, Scottish). If you can get used to the steering wheel being on the wrong side of the car; the wide, open lush countryside vistas; the elaborate stone houses, you’ll like what I’m suggesting. Oh, and you have to accept the bright spacious police headquarter offices instead of those cramped, dingy digs every New York cop show is set in. Another big difference: no one carries a gun and shoots everything in sight. Inevitably there is a troubled cop or two dealing with personal issues and ethical work dilemmas. Lines are crossed, rules are broken. The three I’ve enjoyed recently are Reckoning, Paranoid, and Retribution. One of those is set in America. I basically followed the suggestions made by Netflix based on my past viewing habits. Big Brother or handy helper? You can also search for Harlan Coben’s books that have been adapted into TV series. The titles escape me now, but I loved the ones I saw months ago. *** Under the mini rant category, let me, without naming names or the financial institution, talk about incompetence. The party in question is the branch manager which conclusively proves the Peter Principle: people
will be promoted to their level of incompetence. Great car salesmen are eventually promoted to dealership manager where they fail miserably because they were show room people-people not paper-pushing office people. This woman continues to make mistakes big and small; to make promises she doesn’t keep; and exude a level of competent caring in-charge attitude we initially fell for. She’s the kind of person who doesn’t calmly and clearly explain all the steps, all the hoops in branch policy and process in the (unfamiliar to us) area of estate accounts. She doesn’t explain or provide all the documents requiring signatures---without prompting or until we think we’re good to go--only to discover more obstacles. Luckily for us, there is a clean-up, second-incommand within the branch who is competent, cheerful, organized, and responsive. The other day, as she fixed another manager-created blunder and delay, I asked her why she isn’t the manager with the perks and pay that go with that when she clearly has to be the fixer in addition to her own duties as personal banker. You, no doubt recognize incompetence in
HIGHWAY 15 - VIRTUAL PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE HIGHWAY 15 FUNCTIONAL PLANNING STUDY From Highway 830 North to Highway 834 Alberta Transportation has retained Tetra Tech Canada to complete a functional planning study for Highway 15. The focus of the study is in two areas: 1. Establishing the twinning requirements from Highway 830 North to Highway 29, and 2. Developing a strategy to widen Highway 15 between Lamont and Highway 834, west of Chipman. You are invited to view plans and provide input on the initial design options during a virtual public open house. The open house will run for a three (3) week period that can be accessed from the webpage below: When: Thursday, March 25 to Thursday, April 15, 2021 Access: www.alberta.ca keyword – Highway 15 For more information on the planning study, please contact Paul Steel at (403) 998-1113 or paul.steel@tetratech.com
either a colleague or supervisor. You feel like you’re working in the cartoon strip Dilbert’s office. Some people have incompetence down to an art form. Instead of keeping their heads down, working, and delivering on their job expectations they are overly talkative (roaming from one office to another talking, talking, talking and keeping coworkers from doing their jobs). They keep erratic work hours especially if in management. They’re often the ones ‘working’ late because they are so darned busy they can’t
possibly get it all done in a day. They bluster and obfuscate when asked for direct answers or results. They write gobbledygook-filled reports with no facts or real results. They attack you for asking specific questions. They play mind games and are involved in everyone else’s business and departments. They are never wrong, never take responsibility, and are famous for saying “that’s not my job.” *** On the happy dance front, Roy and I will have our Covid-19 vaccinations before week’s end.
Hilary jumped on it to book our appointments at an Edmonton pharmacy. It’ll be either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine which will necessitate a booster shot in the future. It is reason to celebrate and have a sense of hope and increased safety. We won’t be throwing away our masks or booking a cruise anytime soon but moving through our everyday lives will feel better. In the immortal words of Porky Pig, "Th-ThThe, Th-Th-The, Th-Th... That's all, folks!" from where I sit.

Sexual predator of children arrested The General Investigation Section of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP have arrested and charged a 27-year-old male in connection with an alleged sexual assault. It is believed that the accused used accounts bearing the names: “Shakenbake_2, Shakenbake_3” or any derivative in order to facilitate contact with underage females. The investigation revealed that, the accused began communicating with the 14year-old victim in January, 2020 via the social media “Snapchat” and “Instagram” Applications. The accused asked the victim for nude photographs and then sent nude photographs and videos of himself. The accused’s behaviour escalated and using these social media platforms, the accused made arrangements to meet the victim. The accused took the victim to a secluded area where she was sexually assaulted. As a result of the investigation 27-year old
Kenneth Bardilas of Whitecourt, is charged with the following offences: Sexual Assault Sexual Interference Invitation to Sexual Touching Child Luring x3 Accessing Child Pornography Possession of Child Pornography Possession of Child Pornography for the Purpose of Publication After the initial charges were laid against Kenneth Bardilas, new evidence arose that led police into an extensive and lengthy 7 month investigation. Fort Saskatchewan RCMP’s General Investigation Section (GIS) were able to identify 8 additional underage victims, spanning the Provinces of Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia. Bardilas utilized the same tactics of reaching out to the victims via social media platforms, then exchanged nude photos with them. He also met in person with 2 of the additional victims.
As a result of this investigation, Kenneth Bardilas was arrested in Whitecourt on March 11th, 2021, and was charged with multiple counts of the following offences: -Section 152 CC – Invitation to Sexual Touching -Section 151 – Sexual Interference -Section 153.1(1) Sexual Exploitation of Person with Disability -Section 271 CC Sexual Assault -Section 163.1(4) CC – Possession of Child Pornography -Section 163.1(4.1) CC – Accessing Child Pornography -Section 163.1(2) CC – Making Child Pornography -Section 171.1(1)(b) CC – Make Sexually Explicit Material Available -Section 172.1(1) CC – Luring a Child -Section 264 CC – Criminal Harassment -Section 372(3) CC Harassing Telecommunications. Bardilas was brought before a Justice of the Peace where he was
remanded into custody. His next court appearance is on April 1st, 2021, in Fort Saskatchewan. Insp. Mike McCauley, the Officer in Charge of the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP, said “I want to thank all of the people who worked on this complex investigation. I feel so deeply for the victims and their families. Their healing will take time, but at least it can now start and they can feel safe. These files are challenging from an investigative perspective, but they are also taxing on the officers any time children are involved.” If you have any information about this or any other crime, please contact the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP at 780-997-7900 or your local police service. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the "P3 Tips" app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
Stubbs votes to oppose loosening assisted suicide restrictions BY JANA SEMENIUK Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs voted against bill C 7 on Mar. 11. The bill, which seeks to increase access to MAID (medical assistance in dying) by removing requirements such as a person’s reasonably foreseeable death as well as expanding its criteria to patients with mental health disorders, has been supported by most Liberal and Bloc Quebecois MPs, while opposed by most Conservative, NDP and two of the three Green MPs according to CBC. “Today Bill C-7 will be debated for what could be the final time before it becomes law, because the Liberals are using procedural tools to expedite it,” said Stubbs on her Facebook page. “While Assistance in Dying has been legal in Canada, this new bill removes even more safeguards, and will open the door wider for those struggling with mental illness alone.” Stubbs added that other organizations have
shared her concerns. “The Canadian Mental Health Association and Inclusion Canada (on behalf of people with disabilities) have both cautioned major concerns about C-7 that leave people with mental illnesses and people with disabilities even more vulnerable,” she said. According to Alberta Health Services, MAID has been legal in Canada since June 2016. Since then, the number of Albertans accessing the program has steadily increased with 205 ending their lives in 2017 and 551 last year. Since its inception, a total of 1,503 Albertans have lost their lives with MAID. Stubbs went on to describe a personal experience that influences her passion. “At times in my life, I have personally struggled with depression, once very seriously,” she said on her Facebook post. “I don't particularly want to talk more at length about it, but I am sharing this with you because I simply cannot

Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs rationalize being in favour of “let’s talk” (while I do think that is often rhetoric, and there is still a long way to go in real terms), and of suicide prevention, and of more access for mental
health services for all Canadians, while also supporting C-7. It is incoherent. And it puts many people in danger.” The bill passed with a vote of 180 – 149.

Game over for Masterchef contestant after back injury BY JOHN MATHER Fans watching for Mundare-raised April Lee Baker on last week’s episode of Masterchef Canada were surprised
April Lee Baker
and disappointed when she didn’t appear with the initial line up. And then it was announced, April Lee had suffered an injury and had to withdraw from the competition. During filming for one of the episodes, she was flipping a Japanese pancake when something snapped in her back. “I got home and went to sleep but then woke up in excruciating pain,” she said. “I had numbness down my arms to my hands and I couldn’t get up.” She added that the
show's producers, when contacted, sent her to the hospital where it was discovered she had a couple of bulging discs in her back along with some torn muscles. “It was extremely painful and debilitating. Mentally I was in a bad place and trying to will my body to just get over it. I wasn't able to bend and my general range of motion was very limited,” she added on a Facebook post. “I received great care at the hospital and was able to see a chiropractor before my very difficult
Lamont council approves site for portable air monitoring station BY JANA SEMENIUK Lamont Town Council has passed a motion during the Mar. 9 council meeting to allow the Fort Air partnership (FAP), a non-profit organization monitoring air quality, to place a portable air monitoring station at the Lamont tennis courts located at 4844 49 St. The motion stipulates the station will be placed on a temporary basis for one year. During the Feb. 9 council meeting, Nadine Blaney, executive director for FAP, brought the possibility forward to council in a presentation. “Currently, we monitor approximately 4,500 square kilometres, including about half of Lamont County,” said Blaney. “The current Lamont County station is located about six kilometres west of Lamont. We are looking at replacing that station and possibly relocating it into the town of Lamont.” Blaney explained that stations work best where
people live. “We would like to do this to continue to monitor the air in populated areas,” she said. Lamont Director of Operations and Infrastructure, Tyler Edworthy, explained the benefits the station could offer. “This will provide Lamont with a great educational opportunity and offer residents a great awareness of air quality in the area,” he said. “All costs of installing and maintaining the unit will be the responsibility of Fort Air Partnership, including a development permit required by the Town of Lamont.” Edworthy further explained the temporary nature of the placement. “The agreement is for one year and any extension or if they decide on a permanent placement would have to come back to council for a decision,” he said. Councillor Perry Koroluk asked for confirmation on the financial
impacts to the Town of Lamont. “They would pay all utilities, power hookups etc. The only revenue Lamont would see is the cost of the development permit,” said Edworthy. Councillor Al Harvey had questions around the temporary versus permanent nature of the station. “The site requirements make me think this could accommodate a more permanent air monitoring station,” said Edworthy. “I think there would have to be some alterations that would need to happen with security but that would be their cost.” Mayor Bill Skinner expressed positivity around the motion. “I hope this can be an opportunity for education with our community and our school system with it being located right in the community,” he said. The motion was unanimously passed.
flight home.” Baker did add she was excited to have been able to take part in the competition even though she had to leave early. “I would go back in a heartbeat. There's some-
thing magical that happens in that kitchen. You grow as a person and as a chef.” She added she wanted to reach out and thank all the supporters who cheered her on during
the competition. “Thank you to everyone who helped me when I needed it and who are there for me now. Your kind words and well wishes definitely help.”

Burning brush halted due to fire hazard risk BY JOHN MATHER Due to extremely low precipitation in recent months, Lamont County Council authorized Emergency Services to suspend issuing new brush pile & demolished building burning permits effective as of Mar. 10. At the Mar. 10 council meeting Lamont Regional Fire Chief Shayne Milliken told council the County had received only 20 to 30 per cent of its average precipitation since midFebruary. “This is just to allow council to consider brush pile, and demolished buildings burn permits to be cancelled earlier than is currently allowed under policy,” he said.
“Currently we only allow the burning of brush piles between Nov. 1 and April 1 of each year.” He said since Nov. 1 the department had issued in excess of 170 brush pile burn permits. He said by suspending the burning now it would help control the possibility of fires getting out of control, but would also allow staff to complete the thermal imaging of the county by the first couple of weeks of April which is when the wildfire dangers increase. He added there were still 124 land locations that needed to be looked at under the thermal imaging program. Milliken told council if
Income tax help offered for seniors BY JOHN MATHER Low income seniors living in the Alberta Industrial Heartland area including Bruderheim and Lamont can receive help completing their income tax at Fort Saskatchewan’s Pioneer House Club 50. “This is a service we have offered for seniors for several years at a very low cost,” said Pioneer House spokesman Dennis Gollinger.
The income tax clinic operates from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through to Thursday. It is closed on any statutory holidays. Appointments for the service which is done by a certified accountant are by appointment only that can be made by calling 780-998-3898. People coming to the Pioneer House site are asked to use the side doors and income information and paperwork can be dropped off.
the thermal imaging program discovered any remaining fires burning the department would go and extinguish them at no cost to the landowner. He said they would be contacting all permit holders to do the thermal imaging, but added it was the landowners’ right to refuse the service. Milliken said it's often very difficult to let people know how important it is to suppress burning when there’s still snow on the ground. “We know how quickly the situation can change and a wildfire can occur,” he said. He added the various departments in the County did thermal imaging using a handheld camera. “They always take a brush truck with them and if there is a sign of any fire they quickly put it out.”
He said the process is usually fairly quick.
Council passed a motion to suspend the
burn permits effective Mar. 10.
