A vehicle lays in pieces after failing to jump an embankment near Chipman, Mar. 6. Two suspected thieves were driving the vehicle at a high rate of speed trying to avoid police when the accident occurred. The occupants had to be cut out of the vehicle before being transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Theft suspects fail at Dukes of Hazzard re-enactment BY JOHN MATHER A theft of mail from a post office in Veteran, Alberta early Mar. 6, led to a police chase through several RCMP jurisdictions before the suspects made a Dukes of Hazzard type leap over the washed out bridge on Range Road 184, east of Chipman, not making it, and crashing into an embankment near the far side of the bridge. The call first came in to RCMP in Consort at 5:30 a.m.. A suspect vehicle was soon identified and the chase was

on with officers from detachments in Vegreville, Viking and Killam involved. The vehicle tried to a make the ‘Dukes of Chipman’ jump at approximately 8:30 a.m. shortly after RCMP were coordinating a containment action. Nearby resident Tracy Childs heard the commotion and saw the STARS ambulance land in her field as one of the occupants had to be extracted from the vehicle and airlifted to an

Edmonton hospital. A second vehicle occupant was extracted and taken by ground ambulance to hospital. Both suffered serious life threatening injuries. Lamont County peace officer Derek Wright received the call at about 8:30 a.m. and was on the scene as the two were extracted from the vehicle and taken to hospital. The road was closed for several hours. The accident was then transferred to the Alberta Serious Incident Response

Team (ASIRT) which has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and actions of police. The Alberta Serious Incident Response team, in a release Mar. 9, stated the male airlifted to hospital was 37years-old, while the second suspect was 40-years-old. Their medical condition has been upgraded to critical condition. The RCMP will continue to investigate the events leading up to the collision.
