Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, along with Premier Jason Kenney and Minister Kaycee Madu, toured a warehouse in west Edmonton March 6 during a media event where supplies and equipment are being housed and prepared for a journey to Ukraine, providing relief for those affected by Russia’s ongoing fullscale assault on the country.

The Fill a Plane for Ukraine event began March 3 and saw over 10,000 kilograms of items collected, with sorting and organizing taking place over four days. The event is a joint project by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Alberta Provincial Council and Firefighter Aid to Ukraine. Armstrong-Homeniuk, who also serves as chair to the Advisory Council on Alberta-Ukraine Relations, said she felt emotional seeing the many pallets of stacked boxes and medical equipment ready to be shipped. “When I saw the donations, I couldn’t believe what I saw. This all came together so quick. I am overwhelmed with emotion,” Alberta Premier Jason Kenney she said. speaking on the invasion of Pallets upon palUkraine. Arm-strongHomeniuk and Kenney took time to help with the remaining sorting efforts during the media event.

Volunteer Yuliia Marchinkowski was also emotional speaking about the collection efforts. Members of her family are currently struggling in Ukraine.

“My dad, sister, aunts and uncles are stuck there,” she said, tears springing to her eyes. “My sister is a mom of three and she is on the move. It’s been difficult.” Marchinkowski added that getting supplies to Ukraine has also been difficult with bottlenecking problems in Toronto.

“Firefighter Aid to Ukraine have an extensive network so we can address the bottle-necking from both sides of the border now,” she said. “We are also working through the department of emergency services in Ukraine.”

Marchinkowski said she was grateful for involvement from the provincial government on the project.

“Jackie has been amazing. She is such an advocate and always there to help,” she said. “They (the government) were able to step up when they heard about the project. We started working on the goods and pulling everything together.”

Premier Kenney also announced March 4 that the province will be providing over $10 million in humanitarian aide to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, large scale medical equipment, including an incubator, x-ray machine and two defibrillators, were also donated to the cause. In terms of the supplies getting safely into the hands of Ukrainians, Marchinkowski said she isn’t worried.
