The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village (UCHV) kicked off its 2015 season with the official opening of five historic buildings. To celebrate the special occasion, Canada’s Minister of National Defence and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney was on hand for

the festivities, along with Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit, and Yellowhead MP Jim Eglinski, (former Ross Creek area resident). Other special guests and speakers included: Nick Fedchyshyn, President of the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society and Ray Lopushinsky, Past Chair of the UCHV Advisory Board. Master of Ceremonies

and head historian at UCHV, Jim Nakonechny, welcomed all of the special guests, including all of the invited guests who are family members of the original owners or workers of the five historic buildings that were officially opened. “A great deal of research and work went into preparing these buildings to fully restore them, so we would like to thank all of the

informants, artifact donors, researchers, contractors, and staff for their contributions towards the success of these projects,” stated Nakonechny. Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society Nick Fedchyshyn, also thanked everyone who contributed to the historical restoration projects. “Without you, the UCHV would not be opening

five new buildings today. Those five buildings were: Morecambe School, South River Teacher’s Shack, Luzan Post Office, Grekul Barn and Grekul Granary. Fedchyshyn went on to say, “As a society, whose mandate is to support this outstanding open-air museum, we are proud of our role, in 2003, of initiating the UCHV Enrichment Program to complete the

village in terms of missing historic structures. Over the past decade, we have focused our fundraising efforts to offset costs in a number of areas including: research, support for capital construction, and for the purchase, restoration and reproduction of furnishings for the buildings which we will open today.
