Lamont-based cowboy Josh Birks wins Bull-A-Rama Miichelle Pinon Editor
Lamont-based cowboy Josh Birks had his game face on, and managed to earn the most points to win the title of Bull-A-Rama Supreme 2015 champion on Saturday, April 25. “I was just happy to win,” said Birks, who was up against 23 of the top bullriders and bulls Canada has to offer. Enjoying the thrilling ride were approximately 1,400 fans who crammed into the area last Saturday night. Birks, who appeared exhausted, but elated after receiving his buckle, said it was a great pen of bulls, two of which he was awarded re-rides on, that made for a thrilling fight to the finish. A handful of cowboy fans were able to get their hats personally autographed by Josh Birks and photo taken with him after the competition. While Birks admitted the experience was “pretty draining” he was excited to be able to claim the title and belt buckle. He says most of his winnings are reinvested in the Josh Birks Bullriding Development Scholarship. Cowboys from all over the world can apply for the scholarship, and the native Australian is proud to be able to encourage the young riders and promote the sport of bullriding. “Last year alone we gave away $5,000 in scholarships,” added Birks.

Former councillor ready to tackle MLA position Michelle Pinon Editor Wildrose candidate Joe Gosselin made his first trip to Lamont last Thursday to campaign door-to-door and have the opportunity to hear from local residents. The Parkview Restaurant was one of the places he visited during his meet and greet tour as well as several residential areas in town. Gosselin said his stop was a “positive� trip. As far as what voters had to say, Gosselin said “Some voters clearly identify the Wildrose, but far more voters identify with the need for change.� Gosselin said some of those voters have a vested interest in keeping the status quo, especially if they had been on the receiving end of grant funding. Gosselin said it’s sort of like the don’t bite the
hand that feeds you philosophy. He said one business owner, who was supportive of him and the Wildrose, said they didn’t want to put up one of his signs because they can’t be seen as supporting one particular party. However, their were other Wildrose supporters who requested signs, and told Gosselin they appreciated him campaigning in Lamont. Gosselin did want to address the “elephant in the room�; referring to the fact that he resides outside of the constituency, but is running for a seat in the constituency. Gosselin said many people commute to other towns and cities for work, and this should be no different. Gosselin said whether he lives here or not, will not have any impact on his effectiveness to do the job or his work ethic. The former councillor for the

Sun may set on existing Lamont New Horizons Senior Centre Housing proposal includes demolition of current facility Michelle Pinon Editor
Joe Zazula is a longtime member of the New Horizons Senior Centre in Lamont, and he is opposed to a proposal that would see the facility demolished to make room for more seniors housing in the community. Zazula, Vice-president of the seniors board, said he was one of only two members who opposed a recent motion in favour of having a new facility built as an addition to Beaverhill Lodge in exchange for their current facility. Zazula said there were about 20 people in attendance at the April 16th annual general meeting when the vote was taken. Zazula said he didn’t think the meeting was the proper way to decide
whether to dispose of the facility or not. “I feel it was built by seniors and the town donated a lot of money to it over the years.” He also feels local residents should have been made aware, and have had a say in the matter. “I wonder if council is aware of this?” He also wonders what residents of Beaverhill Lodge think about the proposal, that would also include co-use of some of that facility for social functions and meetings. As far as equity in the existing seniors centre, Zazula believes there is a considerable amount that has been built up over the years, and that should also be taken into account. “If there was a trade, it wouldn’t be a fair one,” added Zazula. In terms of who owns the land, about one acre
in total, Zazula said it belongs to the town. Another point Zazula makes, is that many of the members of the seniors centre are in their seventies and eighties, and if they agree to the addition, they may not be around to see it come to fruition. As the saying goes, “You don’t realize what you’re losing till it’s gone,” stated Zazula. Even though it may appear like this is a done deal, Zazula said he came to the newspaper because he wants people in the community to be aware of what is happening with the seniors centre. Eleniak added that members would also have access to other space within in the lodge if needed. Eleniak said the seniors board would not have to pay for rent in the new facility, but would have to negotiate the cost of utilities. Eleniak also pointed out that 18 members voted for the proposal
and two members voted against the proposal. Land on which the seniors centre is located was donated to the seniors centre by the Town of Lamont in the ‘70’s. Currently the seniors centre has 27 members, and Eleniak said there aren’t enough members or rentals to offset operating expenses. In 2014, Eleniak said the seniors centre operated at a $10,000 loss. Eleniak said this proposal is good for the community and
good for the seniors club members. As far as the proposal, no details were forthcoming at this time. Bill Skinner, chairman of the Lamont County Housing Foundation, told The Lamont Leader: “Plans for construction of the new lodge have not yet been finalized. The housing foundation will prepare a media release as soon as we are able to release the details.”

Bruderheim rancher Len Hodgson was born in the saddle, and he will be one of many horse lovers who will be riding for a cure for cancer on Saturday, May 9th. In fact,
Hodgson hosted the event for about 30 of those years before a fire near his property prompted organizers to find an alternate starting point and host site near Bon Accord for the trail ride. “We ride between 15 and 25 miles that day,� says Hodgson, who is accepting pledges at the Chipman Market and online. In any given year anywhere between 85 to 365 riders participate in the event. On average between $30,000 to $40,000 is raised for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). Over the years Hodgson has met a lot of riders, and looks forward to meeting up with them again. “It’s a bit of a reunion,� says Hodgson. Besides doing what he loves to do, Hodgson gets the chance to help out the charitable organization. Every donation brings the Canadian Cancer Society closer to preventing cancer, earlier detection, and improving treatments so Canadians can live longer, healthier lives. According to the
Canadian Cancer Society, survival rates have gone from 25 per cent in the 1940’s to over 60 per cent today. Back in 2011 ATRA was nominated for a national philanthropy award for being the longest running, independent fundraising group for the Edmonton unit of the CCS. In 2014 ATRA received the Community Champion Award at a provincial Celebration of Impact Ceremony in Calgary. To date, ATRA has raised a total of $1,229,775 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Hodgson says it’s his job to keep riders safe on the trail, but he does so much more as well, to help fight cancer.

Fenske seeking re-election in Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville Constituency PC candidate Jacquie Fenske is planning to regain her seat in the Legislature. As the incumbent in the Fort SaskatchewanVegreville Constituency for the past several years; she wants voters to

First job is to listen to constituents, says NDP candidate Michelle Pinon-Editor NDP candidate Jessica Littlewood was pounding the pavement in Lamont on Saturday, April 25th. Littlewoood said it was her first visit to Lamont and it is her first time running for political office. As far as what she was hearing from voters? “That they feel disconnected, and want to make a difference.” Littlewood said people here want to know their candidate has the commitment, and will meet with them face to face. “People feel like the smaller areas don’t get the same attention as larger areas, and that’s why I’m out here.” Littlewoood said she is in the midst of planning a riding tour throughout the constituency on Saturday, May 2nd, and is hoping to hear from many more constituents at that time. “I decided to run in order to fight for people like myself and my family. Green Party candidate Allison Anderson is also a newbie to the political process. “This is the first time I have run for political office, although I do have experience serving on various local boards in the area over the past 15 years,” stated the Lamont resident, who has served on the Josephberg Agricultural Society, Smoky Lake School of Dance, and the Mundare 341 Air Cadet Squadron. “My decision to run for election was based on dissatisfaction with how opaque the provincial and federal governments have become in recent years. Too many decisions seem to be made behind closed doors to the detriment of public accountability.”
Anderson feels that “true representation” of constituents has been replaced with what she calls partisan agendas and whipped votes. The reason she became a member of the Green Party was largely due to the efforts of Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. “When I asked myself what more could I do about the current state of politics beyond exercising my right to vote, I decided that running as a Green Party candidate afforded me a great opportunity to have discussions with a variety of citizens about the values that many Albertans hold dear. Specifically for me, the six principles of the Green Party that guide policy statements and decision making align with my values and ethics as a registered social worker and are not easily described as left or
right on the political spectrum.” Anderson went on to say that she wants to see government transparency. Economic stability includes developing alternative sectors and renewables, as well as stewardship that considers sustainable resource development and the intrinsic value of the environment and all of its inhabitants. “I am committed to serious deliberation and consensus seeking from all voices within the riding in order to promote human values balanced with economic concerns. I would like to see a diversified economy that benefits not just the few but the many; not just the urban but the rural as well. I have a great interest in exploring ways to revitalize communities while supporting the
sustainability of already vibrant communities. Although diverse in nature, the riding of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville has a cooperative heart where multiple stakeholders have worked together to preserve quality of life while creating job opportunities and other economic benefits.” Anderson would also like to support the various communities in building on this strong foundation, and create a sustainable future for all members of this constituency. “To this end, I would like to find a way to bring more health and human services to the rural areas. Nearly three months after a petition was launched requesting Municipal Affairs to conduct an independent review of the Village of Andrew no action has been taken. An official with Municipal Affairs (MA) did some checking as
requested by The Lamont Leader, and confirmed that it has yet to receive a petition for an official review from the residents of Andrew. Jerry Ward, a public affairs officer with MA stated on April 24th, “I understand from one of our program staff that he has spoken with a couple of residents from Andrew, and directed
them to the petitions document on our website, however, we have not heard anything further on this matter.” Back in late January, Andrew resident Sheila Lupul began canvassing fellow residents (electors) in the Village of Andrew. During a Jan. 31 interview, Lupul, stated she had gathered around 100 signatures, and
planned to gather more signatures in the coming weeks in order to reach the necessary quota (20 per cent of the population). Several attempts to reach Lupul in recent weeks have been unsuccessful. Messages that were left for Lupul asking for comment were not returned.
