Hardisty Rodeo to go forward if Stage 3 proceeds Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Hardisty Rodeo will go forward this July, as long as the province proceeds into Stage 3 in late June or early July, as planned.

Members of the Rodeo Committee have been holding work bees at the stampede grounds, and

have started to make plans to go forward with the event, putting out tenders.

The rodeo is planned for July 16-18 if all goes well with the provincial vaccination and hospitalization numbers, and the province can move into Stage 3, where all restrictions are lifted.

Hi everyone, as I sit here typing up the news it’s cloudy and raining. I guess the rain is still welcome. It sounds like there will be rain all week, so we can find work to do in the house.

I know I have lots to do, as most of you know I’m selling my home and going to live at Providence Place. I will miss Heisler and all my friends that I know.

As of the end of June I will no longer be doing the news, so if anyone is interested in taking over my job let the Community Press know. I took over from Irene Fankhanel, so I have enjoyed doing it for many, many years. It hasn’t been easy through COVID-19, I sure hope it will change soon and we can get back to a normal lifestyle.

Congratulations to Shirley Heisler who celebrated her 80th birthday on June 4 with her family, putting on a coffee lawn party for her friends and family. We wish you many more years of happiness and good health.

I will miss you all. Welcome to all the newcomers, I hope you will enjoy your stay in Heisler.

Forestburg councillor wanted to represent his age demographic at local Council table Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Devon McNabb, who grew up in Forestburg, did his post secondary schooling outside the area, taking a job in Edmonton afterward. He moved back to Forestburg in 2013, and has since been involved in a number of community groups, before running for Council and successfully winning a seat in 2017.

He says, “I always tell people it's a good idea to leave home. Go out and see the world a little bit. Try out the city or any other change of scenery.

“It gave me even more of an appreciation for Forestburg and I knew I eventually wanted to be back here to raise a family.”

McNabb had never served as an elected official before. But he had played an active role with the Forestburg Golf Club, Forestburg Flyers, Forestburg Arena Board, and the East Central Senior Hockey League.

“My experience on these boards helped prepare me to a certain extent for being on Council in the sense that the meeting processes are similar, and the fact that essentially everything comes back to budget considerations regardless of what board you are sitting on.”

McNabb says, at 31, he wanted to run for Council as a voice for his age demographic. “We were facing the potential shutdown of our coal mine and the prospect of regionalization within the county.

“I thought it was important to focus on attracting new business opportunities to our area, as well as supporting and protecting the businesses we currently have.”

He adds, “I wasn’t fully informed on what regionalization might mean, but I knew there were concerns that it could look more like centralization. I wanted to be sure to have a better understanding of the process and be more directly involved in those conversations.”

While McNabb was concerned for the future of the village, wanting to ensure its continued growth, he didn’t have any one thing that he wanted to champion or oppose by going on Council. “The main goal for me was to help Forestburg continue to grow. The coal mine and power plant are major employers in our area and the prospect of losing one or both of those industries in the not so distant future will no doubt have an effect on our village.

“It’s important to me that we are able to not only keep families in our village, but attract new families.

“We have a wonderful community full of amenities that resemble towns much larger than Forestburg.”

He lists the K-12 school, new multi-use facility, swimming pool, golf course, curling rink, riding arena, campgrounds, ball diamonds, soccer field, tennis courts, and playgrounds as examples of all the amenities in the village.

“Unfortunately, as enticing as our beautiful village is, without employment opportunities it will be difficult to attract new families.”

McNabb says his first few months on Council were a real learning curve for him. “We were fortunate to have a couple of veterans on our Council to compliment the new members, along with a knowledgeable administration.

“It really didn’t take too long to get comfortable,” he says, “and the last three-and-a-half years have flown by.”

McNabb adds, “The perception is often that Council meets to discuss barking dogs and frozen water lines.”

He says while those things definitely do come up in some discussion, the real work of Council goes deeper than that.

He’s proud of the things Council has accomplished

during his first term. “We have attracted new businesses and worked to maintain the original businesses in Forestburg.

“We are still searching for new opportunities and as a fellow Council member always says, ‘You say yes until you have to say no.’

“We are considerate of our citizens and facility users and keeping within our budget, while moving forward with necessary projects and maintenance.

“Our Council and administration work very well together. Being on Council has taught me that things take time, and planning for all outcomes is key.”

McNabb thinks that having so many regional partnerships with other municipalities in Flagstaff County gives everyone a big advantage. “Overall, I think the communities within our county work very well together. We are all so closely tied together in many ways, and I think that it’s essential that we all continue to work together going forward.”

McNabb says one of the biggest challenges as a councillor, for him, “is knowing you can’t satisfy everyone.

“You need to make decisions based on what you truly feel is best for the Village as a whole.”

He says it’s rewarding looking back on his first term. “I believe throughout this term our village has progressed, and Council continues to focus on moving forward, despite some of the obstacles we’ve been faced with.

“I think we can all be proud of that.”

McNabb says COVID-19 hasn’t had a huge effect on his work as a councillor, but he sympathizes with the effects it’s had on the individuals and businesses in the area.

He hasn’t decided yet whether he’ll seek a second term this fall. “I have enjoyed my first term, and would look forward to helping build from what we have accomplished so far as a Council.

“It’s important as a member of Council that you put in the time and focus to be helpful and productive. If I believe I can effectively juggle those responsibilities with a new family, I will likely run for a second term.”

McNabb says to anyone thinking of running in this fall’s municipal election, “Just throwing your name in the hat is commendable!

“If you are elected, remember, there’s a lot of reading material!

“Most importantly - don’t take things personally.”

LETTER

Reader: Uprooting Galahad Care Centre residents disconcerting Galahad Care Centre residents were uprooted and moved to Hardisty, Daysland, Killam, Wainwright, or Viking… wherever room could be found.

This was very disconcerting, because it is a huge disruption to what the Residents have come to consider as "home," especially to some of the 18 residents who have been at Galahad for up to 10 years. (… a shock, sprung on them without any warning, just before this past weekend.)

Neither the residents, nor their families were aware of the supposed "staffing crisis," (which is apparently being blamed on COVID, with claims that "more staff were having to self isolate".)

This totally unexpected move announcement was conveyed by a Zoom conference, shortly after residents were informed of the good news regarding funding received by the Galahad Auxiliary.

Repeated assurances that "AHS Staff has explored all possible options to bring in additional staffing to avoid relocating residents," and "AHS exhausted all efforts to find physician coverage during this time, locally within Central Zone, and provincially, but have not been able to find physicians to cover the ED during this time" ring hollow A review of Alberta’s continuing-care system indicated demand for Continuing Care will grow by two-thirds by the end of the decade.

This is not the first time that rural Albertans are becoming aware of supposed current "staffing crises/doctor shortages" causing closures.

That excuse was used for shutting down the Rocky Mountain Hospital's Emergency Department (May 2021) for 16 hours, and with possible future uncovered shifts also occurring in June.

Staffing crises have also recently been called doctor shortages, in other rural settings, like at the Moose Squirrel Clinic in Sundre, when they lost five Doctors; with similar instances in Pincher Creek, Lac La Biche, and others.

Roughly 200 Doctors reported they are “reconsidering their practices” since Minister Shandro "toreup their contracts" (February 2020) and has been harassing them thereafter, making constant barbs regarding Alberta doctors making bigger salaries than the doctors in the rest of Canada, and threatening to reveal their compensations.

It should be noted that Alberta MLAs and Ministers are also the highest paid in Canada. That

means Shandro, with his $187,756/yr. (plus expenses, stipends, perks, etc.) also makes more than those in comparable positions in other provinces.

Why Alberta chose MNP to do this ContinuingCare report, and what its senior care expertise or credentials are, remain unclear.

MNP claims its recommendations would create savings of: “an estimated $452 million in annual operating costs, and about $1.7 billion in cumulative capital costs,” which makes this report sound like it is mostly about saving money, not about "improving the quality of life for residents."

The whole Report is based on MNP's stakeholder engagement which includes (as per its Executive Summary; Figure 2/1; p. 4): only "three Resident interviews /Group Interviews (our of the summary's previously cited total 94 virtual/group interviews); 14 Family/Caregiver Interviews; Zero Facility-Based Continuing Care/FBCC Staff Interviews, and 1,512 Public Survey Responses.

This seems a weak stakeholder base on which to build this commissioned report!

In regards to the currently reported doctor-shortages (alternately dubbed a COVID-related "staffing crisis"), Minister Shandro directed the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSA; July 2020) to "STOP doctors from leaving Alberta Practices en masse."

This, on his part, is a power over-reach, considered to be a breach of Alberta doctors' charter rights, which David Shepherd (who monitored that CPSA meeting) described as “wildly inappropriate.”

Action that “fundamentally disables the democratic process,” according to Drew Anderson (CBC News; Feb. 21).

But Shandro somehow managed to still claim that Alberta doctors were not actually leaving the province. (Another example of mixed messages!)

Dean Bennet. (Global News, May 31) however, stated the Alberta Report "urges Home Care to handle predicted surges in the continuing care system," which seems to contradict the claim that the Galahad move is just "temporary."

Additionally, Kenney's comments in the House, regarding Bill 70 (the COVID-19 Measures Related Act) will make it more difficult (in the future) for residents and families to sue continuous care operators to get justice in court.

During question period in the Legislature, Premier Kenney also said this Bill is “meant to avoid the bankruptcy and shutdown of care homes,” which seems more in line with what MNP claims it does.

Kenney added, "That" [bankruptcy and shutdown] would have a devastating impact and risk to the health of those seniors. We can’t let that happen.”

However, he failed to even mention, "Improving the Quality of Life for Residents in Facility-based Continuing Care."

Meanwhile, Health Minister Shandro maintains that his government is focused on the bottom line, and that "holding total physician compensation steady would prevent a $2 Billion overrun on the province's budget." (www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-doctors-outraged-billing-changes) He sits by and seemingly just lets long-term continuing care run its course… be it shut-downs, temporary closures, or any combination thereof.

I hope you have all your flowers and gardens planted and they weathered the excruciating heat last week. Thank goodness we received some rain and cooler temperatures.

My two farmers (Jim and son Harley) helped their old mama fill 35 floral planters and also plant flowers and plants in the other flower beds. Hallelujah... it's all done. Now I pray the deer, gophers, and other varmints don't eat my plants as their lunch.

This morning I saw that someone had hit a young deer and it lay dead at the side of our road. My son took it away in the loader to our bone pile. We did not want to attract coyotes, cougars, or bears to our yard in the night. Especially when we have an ill cow being treated that can't defend herself and a little calf that is still being partially bottle fed.

The news channel CFRN has had a number of wildlife clips showing bear sauntering through the suburbs of Millet and a teen pushing a big bear off a fence whilst trying to save her little dogs somewhere in Alberta. This is not my idea of a fun time... it’s scary really!

Flagstaff has had it's share of wildlife sightings. We know that cougars, wolves, and bears have been seen on Tom and Sherrie Hughes' trail cameras. A couple of years ago the neighbours saw a bear on our silage pit and a bear was sighted by road crew builders north of Brenda deKock's. We figured it was probably the same bear. The news showed where a bear had attacked and killed a cow

Boy, was I wrong. My friend at Galahad said the game warden had posted notices at Big Knife Provincial Park warning the public re; bear sightings. Galahad folks have also seen bears. They may be cute, but I would hate to have their big claws rake over my body.

I was reading about cougar's in the recent Canadian Geographic magazine. Their population is increasing and it is thought to be related to the abundance of prey, especially white tailed deer, mule deer, and elk. They even have a taste for young moose... Good Lord now they are getting fussy too: young versus old moose meat. Well there are certainly many moose to munch on, out

river too.

Be alert and smart when you are out walking. Why not borrow the Nordic Walking poles, for free, from the library? They are great for support on uneven ground, help burn more calories, and you can hit something over the head if you need to... be it man or beast... haha. Remember to look in the Mercantile antique store window on Hardisty's main street and you can view a stuffed male cougar. You don't want to meet a cougar and think it is just a well fed pussy cat.

I am just kidding, they are very elusive creatures, but it does not hurt to be knowledgeable.

Bob Hudson was gopher hunting a ways east of the tank farm and informed me that he saw an albino mule deer. My grandson is an avid hunter and says he is sure he also sighted the same deer out in that area towards Amisk. Mother nature always surprises us with something interesting.

Wilf and Marlene Adam have been entertained by their humming birds and yellow Finches. Marlene said that yellow Finches are supposed to like to eat "Niger" seeds, but their finches don't know that they are normal finches and gorge themselves on sunflower seeds. I guess you will have a multitude of free sunflowers sprin-

kled all over your yard in the next year. Enjoy!

I wonder how the library Mother's Day Activity sunflower seeds have grown? Gail Kobitzsch said her grand girls gave the plants to her to continue growing in her garden.

Next Sunday is Father's Day... I researched the history of this special day. It actually originated in the USA. William Jackson Smart was a twice married, twice widowed Civil War Veteran and father of 14 children (Guess he and the wives never figured out the rhythm method).

Anyways the story goes that his daughter Sonora Dodd was attending one of the first official Mother's Day services in 1909 when she had an epiphany... if mothers deserved a special day, why not have a day to honour Fathers? So in 1910 the first Father's day was celebrated. Now the third Sunday in June is always Father's Day. So applaud your father figure, be he the biological Dad, a stepdad, or any fill in father that loves you and ensures that you are save and secure. I know I have missed some version of what a father is, but you know what I mean. So this Sunday spoil that Father and thank him for all he does or has done for you.

Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch hoping to hold women’s gun course when restrictions ease Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch (FRCW) is hoping to move forward with a women’s gun course they had tentatively planned for 2020, prior to the pandemic.

The group is planning to co-sponsor the event with The Hive, in Sedgewick, where the one-day course is to be held. FRCW is hoping to hold one-day unrestricted and restricted course over a weekend, with one on each day.

Once the details and dates are confirmed, FRCW will start taking registrations.

The society has made booklets of hunting permission slips available to landowners in the past, and when supplies of these books ran low, looked into how best to continue to offer these to Flagstaff residents.

Society members felt it was valuable to continue to provide access to these forms, but will look into creating a downloadable version from their Facebook page, that can be printed off and filled out as needed.

FRCW membership stands at 133 at this time. The society would like to see that number rise in future, but pandemic restrictions have made it difficult to get out to promote the club over the past year.

Sgt. Colin Thorne of the Killam RCMP Detachment told members at their meeting on Monday, June 7, that detachment members have been making an effort to be more visible in all communities in the region.

He also encouraged members of the public to continue to report all break-ins or attempted break-ins, and any criminal activity, to RCMP, and to continue to call

and report suspicious activity or vehicles.

“The best thing Rural Crime Watch members can do to help RCMP is to observe and report.

“No matter how insignificant it may appear

Even though Europeans have been growing tomatoes since the early 1500’s, they didn’t start eating them until the 1700’s. Then Europe’s elite became convinced that tomatoes were poisonous, because people sometimes died after eating them.

It earned them the nickname “poison apple.” However, it turns out the poison came from the pewter plates they served the tomatoes on, when the acid from the tomatoes leached out the lead from the plate. It was lead poisoning that killed them.

Thankfully, common sense and science eventually prevailed, and today, more than oneand-a-half billion pounds of tomatoes are produced commercially every year.

Past pressings From the Archives: The Community Press April 23, 1980: A Flagstaff Waste Management Authority was recently formed to plan and operate a new landfill site, to be located northeast of Sedgewick. One member from each of the nine communities in the county is to sit on the board, as well as representatives from Rosalind and Bawlf. Hardisty initially chose not to use the regional facility, but provisions were made so they could enter at a later date.

April 23, 1980: The Town of Sedgewick held a tribute to the County of Flagstaff for having the first District Agriculturalist’s office in Alberta, 60 years ago. This is a special initiative of Alberta’s 75th Anniversary celebration. All DA offices will receive a plaque, but Flagstaff will be given a special plaque for becoming the first office.

June, 1984: Alberta’s municipal associations are looking at a proposed new Police Act with suspicion and trepidation.

The new act proposed that municipalities such as Flagstaff County and the towns and villages would now be charged for RCMP services.

Flagstaff County Council approved a resolution on June 14, 1984 to send to the province and the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, saying, “Whereas the per capita costs basis would impose a further burden of taxes on the municipal ratepayers who are facing difficult times now to survive with their operations; Now therefore be it resolved that the policing across Canada be uniform with financing to remain the same as is presently in place, as ratepayers cannot afford any additional increase in taxation at this time.”

On land, by sea, and in the air 14,000 Canadians landed at Juno Beach on June 6, 1944, and 359 of these brave men lost their lives.

D-Day would be only the beginning of more than two-and-a-half months of hard fighting in Normandy that would eventually see more than 5,000 Canadians being killed. But, with great courage and sacrifice, the Canadians played a key role in the Allied victory there and the eventual liberation of Europe during the Second World War. Lest we forget their sacrifice or courage.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded $2,870 in grants to the Forestburg School.

The grants were given to support the Jim Lorrain Memorial Scholarships, the Donna Bish Oberg Scholarship, and to assist in the purchase of technology not otherwise available at the school.

All of these grants are from funds established specifically to support the scholarships and the pur-

chase of technology or learning materials. The funds have provided $16,000 in scholarships for Forestburg students and more than $9,000 to supplement learning opportunities at the Forestburg School.

The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support charitable organizations in East Central Alberta, which benefit the local communities and have a positive

herd themselves. This summer, Vision Credit Union is launching a new digital banking platform designed

As a result of the current COVID-19 restrictions, Provincial Assessor’s Office (PAO) staff have been required to make slight changes to the way field inspections have been done in the past. Many companies have policies in place that do not allow property inspections during the pandemic. This means that facilities that are staffed with operators or other plant personnel may not be able to be physically inspected under the current restrictions. As a result, increased emphasis will be placed on company reporting, and additional follow-up will be done with these companies via phone calls or exchange of email information. Canada has a new statutory holiday: Truth and Reconciliation Day

A new bill to create a statutory holiday, Truth and Reconcilation Day, at the end of September to commemorate the tragic legacy of residential schools in Canada received royal assent Thursday, June 3.

Starting this Sept. 30, the new holiday will offer Canadians an opportunity to learn about and reflect on a dark chapter in Canada’s history, and to commemorate the survivors, their families, and their communities.

It was called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the idea was first introduced as Bill C-369 in 2017 by an NDP MP from Saskatchewan.

MP Georgina Jolibois, for DesnethéMissinippi-Churchill River, SK, originally proposed that the new holiday be held on the existing National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21.

She said, “This bill will not solve the housing crisis indigenous people live through and it will not fix the overrepresentation of indigenous children in foster care, and it will not close the education gap that leaves indigenous children behind.

“However, it will give Canadians the opportunity to fully understand why those problems exist. It would give space and time for the government to reflect on its failures and remind itself why it so important to work for and with indigenous people every other day of the year.

“Progress will take time, but through my bill, we are taking the time to make progress and are moving forward.”

A change of date for the holiday was recommended, from June to Sept. 30 presently celebrated as Orange Shirt day.

Jolibois’ amended bill passed all three readings, but was blocked by the Senate.

Jolibois was not re-elected in the 2019 fed-

eral election.

When Bill C-5, which picked up Jolibois’ idea, was tabled, the date proposed was again Sept. 30, already a day to wear orange to honour victims of residential schools. Bill C-5 was tabled last September

by Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault.

He said, “If provinces decide not to make it a holiday, it could be a day in the classrooms where we talk about this, which our history books have largely ignored.”

“Maybe we can play a role in helping to remember, and to increase the level of awareness around Indigenous issues in this country and move the dial a little bit further on reconciliation.”

The bill passed first reading the same day. Second reading of the bill passed Nov. 2, 2020.

Guilbeault moved a third reading on May 28, after remains were found at a former Kamloops Residential School site.

Green MP Jenica Atwin stated; “I would like to begin by extending my deepest condolences, and to send strength, to all who will be re-traumatized by this new and devastating information regarding the realities of Indian residential schools in Canada.

“The remains of 215 children have been found buried on the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, BC, using ground-penetrating radar, confirming what families and communities have known but could not substantiate until now. This new knowledge is truth. We need to confront our past and our present with truth before we can build reconciliation.

“I remember when I was first introduced to the concept of residential schools.

It was during my post-secondary studies, largely on my own and in conversations with family and friends.

“It was not taught to me in school. We

only learned that Canada was a land of peacekeepers and apologetic people whose brave pioneer ancestors defied the odds in a barren land to build the country we have today.

“We have worked very hard to erase the history and culture of indigenous peoples.

We have also worked very hard to erase

the people themselves, as well as the evidence of these crimes.”

Atwin voted in support, adding, “I fully support Bill C-5 and I stand with my colleagues in the House today to see that it becomes law. It is long overdue.

“For those children and their families, please, we must do better.”

New/old partnership spreading its wings for the benefit of local families Leslie Cholowsky Editor

A new group, called the Flagstaff Early Childhood Partnership, has sprung out of the former Flagstaff/Beaver Early Childhood Coalition, and they are bringing some fun and innovative activities for families in Flagstaff County.

Hot off the success of a county wide scavenger hunt, the group is planning for their next event, which they are calling Tales and Trails.

It’s a story book walk planned for June 25 to July 5, where families with children six and under or seven and older will be invited to walk Main Street Killam, and read a book at the same time, with one page featured in each business front window along the street.

Along the way, participants will gather clues from each window, that put together will form a phrase. Once the family sends in the phrase, they will receive their very own copy of the book.

Jessica Docksteader, Program Facilitator at the Family Resource Centre, is also facilitating this event.

She says, “Families can participate at their leisure, since everything is accessible outside.”

She says if this event is successful, the idea is to bring it to another town, then another, over the summer, if possible.

“That’s why we are calling this Series one,” she says.

She says it’s truly amazing what happens when you bring together a lot of like-minded people.

The original coalition was a government funded venture that brought key stakeholders in early childhood development together in a predefined region.

The group members stayed in touch, but informally, until Docksteader proposed that they start meeting again to share ideas and fill each other in on what they are up to.

“We decided this needs to continue.”

She adds, “Everybody adds something to the mix. We’re happy to be back together, and we’ve actually grown. There are now 14 service providers, perhaps soon to be 15, working together and meeting regularly.”

The first group project they tackled was a scavenger hunt for families where each group took a turn of providing activities and prizes for one week.

“The feedback from the

families who participated was outstanding.

They didn’t even care what the prizes were, they were having fun solving the clues.

“Many told us that they had great fun discovering a new Flagstaff community, too.”

Docksteader said the new event was inspired by similar events run in Camrose, but she wanted to enhance it by figuring out a way to give participants the book at the end.

Families do have to

register to participate and receive a free book, which can be done through the parents forfuninflagstaff.com website.

The upside to registering is that there are gift bags for participating families with some pretty cool things inside.

There’s no charge to participate.

Docksteader says the partnership’s goal is to bring the Flagstaff community together, and to share information. By working together, the groups don’t overlap services or events, and work together to bring larger events to the Flagstaff County community.

She says each group brings something different to the table. “They are all giving in different ways.”

RCMP Detachment seeking help identifying suspects ing the home and stealing electronic equipment.

Based on audio from the surveillance video, RCMP picked up the sound of what is believed to be a diesel truck the suspects were driving.

Killam RCMP are seeking the public’s help in identifying two suspects in a break, enter and theft that occurred in Galahad.

At 4:45 p.m. on May 9, Killam RCMP responded to a break-in at an unoccupied residence in the hamlet located in Flagstaff County near Forestburg.

Surveillance video shows two males enter-

The second suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 50-60 years of age, and about 5’10” or 178183 cm in height.

Killam RCMP want anyone who thinks they know who these persons are and possibly provide further information, to please contact the Killam RCMP at 780-385-3509.

COVID cases dropping, 1st shot now at 67 per cent Leslie Cholowsky Editor

With the rate of new cases of COVID-19 dropping, as well as hospitalizations, the Province expects to move to Stage 2 of its Open for Summer plan as early as Thursday, June 10. Premier Jason Kenney confirmed that Monday, June 7, that the benchmarks for Stage 2 have been met.

“The numbers continue to go very much in the right direction,” he added.

Kenney did express some concerns over a diminishing demand for first-dose vaccinations.

He indicated Monday that there was presently only 100,000 bookings over the next seven days, with 115,000 more needed to meet the Stage 3 threshold.

“We are getting to that critical point right now where every additional person who decides to get that first dose is going to accelerate the full openness of Alberta.

“If you’ve been holding back for one reason or another, I urge you, now is the time, over the next week, to get the jab so that we can move forward more quickly with the Open for Summer plan.”

Kenney also clarified that the Open for Summer plan is meant to be an “open for good” plan, to continue into the fall.

He said he expects to see

a number approaching 80 per cent vaccination rate by then.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Chief Medical Officer for the province, reported just 139 new cases over the past 24 hours on Tuesday, June 8, and just 336 in hospital, includ-

ing 85 in intensive care.

Testing positivity rate has dropped to 4.2 per cent.

As of Monday, the province topped the 3.1 million dose mark for vaccinations, with 67 per cent of eligible Albertans 12 and up having re-

ceived at least one dose.

There are now 15.1 per cent of Albertans who are fully protected with two doses.

Anyone vaccinated in April may book their second dose starting June 14.

May can book their second dose started June 28.

Flagstaff County presently has 62.7 per cent of people aged 12 and up immunized with at least one dose, with those age 40 and up over 61 per cent.

Those aged 20 to 39 are

lagging behind provincial and regional averages, at 42.5 per cent, while those ages 12 to 19 are slightly higher, but still under the average, at 46.9 per cent.

Flagstaff County presently has 28 active cases.

Living well: The power of touch Over the last several months, we at HOM of Well Being have had a number of people coming in to book a massage or other touch treatment in part because they feel deprived of contact.

Many have described feelings of loneliness, depression, and hopelessness and although we know full well how important touch is, we did not realize how many people are feeling this way.

Social distancing has taken a big toll on people’s emotional and physical well-being, and lack of healthy, nurturing touch plays a big role in

that.

Studies that have shown that babies (especially premature babies) do not thrive well and can even perish without regular touch. They also do not respond well to stress and can become socially withdrawn.

Children rely on adults to care for them and to help them feel safe and secure, valued and loved.

One of the ways to accomplish this is through regular touch and positive demonstrations of affection through hugs, caresses and kisses.

When shown love this way, children learn how to receive love and they

also learn how to give love. They grow up to be more emotionally strong and are better able to deal with stressors. They tend to have stronger self-confidence and self-esteem.

Adults (especially those of us who are caregivers) also need regular touch and positive attention.

As social beings, our social networks are important to our quality of life and there is more chance we will experience happiness, health, and longevity.

Without positive touch and attention elderly people may feel lonely and depressed and may even ‘waste away.’

According to studies done by Tiffany Field, the head of the Touch Research Institute in Miami, “touch appears to stimulate our bodies to react in certain ways.

“Positive touch can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels, stimulate the hippocampus (an area of the brain that is central to memory), and drive the release of a host of hormones and neuropeptides that have been linked to positive and uplifting emotions.

“The physical effects of touch are far reaching,”she says.

In another set of studies

Faith: Live a life that shouts the Lord’s fame "Jesus I desire to live with a life that shouts Your fame."

This is the first line of a chorus that I encountered again this week. I see some real truth and also a challenge in this. I believe that each and every day our lives must be lived with that desire.

We need to live our lives in such a way that people will experience the presence of God through spending time with us. In a world that is wishy-washy, lacking in morals, and lacking in standards, it is time

for someone to stand up and not only preach a gospel that is true and Holy, but to demonstrate one.

To live one, so that people will not only hear it but see it. People are looking for an example that is worth being followed.

Is that you and I? Are we living a life that is shouting God's fame or our own?

Are we attracting attention for us or for Him? Jesus said in Matthew 5:16 "In the same way, let your light so shine

before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven."

This brings a whole new perspective on the reason why we are here.

We are here to demonstrate in such a way that people see it and recognize who is to be acknowledged and praised for it.

Wouldn't it be neat if people who rub shoulders with us were inspired to worship the Lord as a result.

Lord that each of us would live a life that shouts your fame!

Getting the most from your spray We are in the middle of spray season. Some canola producers are using insecticide on their canola and others are trying to spray the emerging crop for weeds. It is a major crop expense, but how do you maximize the results from your spray dollar?

Let’s review the best way to get good results. You need to spray the intended target at the right rate, timing, coverage, and environmental conditions. Spraying when it is too cold, too wet, too windy, or at the wrong stage is a recipe for poor results. Let’s look at the crop first.

Research in the 1960s and 1970s found that weeds germinating before the crop germinated can severely damage crop yield. However, if the crop germinates at the same time or before the weeds, yield losses were significantly reduced. You should closely follow the crop staging for pesticides as using it outside the recommended growth stages can lead to crop damage and/or yield loss. This also applies to the problem insect staging compared to the crop. With weeds, they usually have to be vegetative and not flowering.

Weather conditions are always challenging, especially while spraying. Wind is a common problem during spraying season.

The need to cover many acres over a limited time can lead to spraying in poor conditions.

Every year, people living adjoin-

ing crop fields find their trees or gardens are hit by spray drift.

Spray with wind conditions at 15 kmph or lower. It could be the adjoining crop was sprayed under windy conditions or the other extreme of complete calms and vapor clouds drifting off the field.

Remember, pesticides have a critical temperature at which they are effective. If you’re spraying herbicide, the plants must be actively growing. That means they are most effective when there is water for growth and temperatures that allow photosynthesis to occur. Spraying any pesticide when it is five degrees celsius or colder is mostly a waste of money and time. Best temperatures for good results should be above 12 degrees celsius. Spraying when it is too hot can also be a problem. Most crops grown in Alberta grow best from 15 degrees celsius to 28 degrees

celsius. When temperatures are in the 30 degrees celsius or above range they shut down, as they do in drought conditions. Spraying when it is too hot can lead to poor control and vapor clouds due to volatilization.

Then there is the false economy of cutting rates. The recommended rates on the label are set to ensure good activity on the target weed or bug. By cutting rates you may get good control if everything works out perfectly or you may only get partial control. Cutting rates can be a short cut to developing resistance in the problem disease, weed or insect.

Finally, the most important thing to consider is the economic threshold of the pest compared to the crop. Many common pests, especially insects, have fairly, well defined economic thresholds. That cannot be said true for weeds. Our tolerance for weeds

is low in some crops as we have many herbicide tools to use for control. However, using those same tools, year after year has resulted in serious problems controlling weeds which have become resistant to the herbicides. Two examples of this are wild oats and kochia. There are wild oats in the county that have herbicide resistance to two or three of our main herbicide groups. In some cases, we are relying on old chemistries to try and combat the problem.

Make sure weather conditions are good for success, rotate your pesticide groups, use the proper rates, and make sure the pesticide you are using will provide you with a profitable return for your investment.
