New format? No problem for District 4-H Show & Sale
Wavy Lake 4-H Beef Club member Austin Harty, an Intermediate, won Rate of Gain on his steer, LB, both at the club level and the District Level, with a whopping 4.44. Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Flagstaff 4-H club members from Iron Creek 4-H (host club), Hastings Coulee 4-H, Wavy Lake 4-H, and Battle River 4H had 70 different steers up for auction as part of their annual steer sale. It was down to the wire on Monday, June 1, as last-minute bids extended the sale until nearly 7 p.m., hours past its scheduled end point on DLMS Farm Gate’s Time Auction racehorse style sale format. With bids ranging from $2.50 per pound to $3.95 per pound, club members made a great showing with this year’s steers. For some of the senior members, this
was have been the last time they participated in the final show and sale, and it was a marked difference from previous years. Each 4-H member selling a steer produced a video of themselves with the animal, some including audio, some just video, along with a still photo. The district was still able to award Rate of Gain winners for each club, these were: Porter Lang from Iron Creek, at 3.99; Austin Harty from Wavy Lake, at 4.44, Harty is also the Flagstaff District Champion; Rex Curtis from Hastings Coulee, with 3.59, and Tate Sutter with Battle River, at 3.77. Record Book Competition 2019 winners were also announced. For the Jr. in first place is Macy Morken - Wavy Lake,
Iron Creek Member Dayna Ruzicka with her steer Chubsie, who sold at the highest price during Monday’s Sale. with second place going to Jesse Nichols from Iron Creek. For Intermediate, first place went to Skylar Morken from Wavy Lake, with Kara Niehaus from the Battle River club taking second. In the Seniors category, first place went to Keely Adams from Hastings Coulee, with second place awarded to Elise Mohler from Wavy Lake. Weigh ins were arranged by the host club, Iron Creek, the week before the sale in a manner that allowed for safe physical distancing. Afterwards, Hastings Coulee leader Tracy Dietrich said, “Yesterday went very well. To say that it was a bit weird would be an understatement.” Dietrich said before the sale that she
will miss seeing the pride on club members’ faces as in past years. In Iron Creek member Jesse Nichols’ video, she says, as she shows off her calf Geronimo, “Regardless of COVID-19, 4H still found a way to finish strong.” You would expect nothing else from an organization whose motto is “Learn to do by doing.” Members still held a STARS fundraiser, but instead of a raffle, asked for cash donations. Those interested had until June 1 to send in a cheque, so the final amount raised won’t be known right away. At last year’s sale, more than $10,000 was donated to STARS through the Flagstaff District 4-H Clubs. Sunday would have been the Female See 4-H SALE P23
