CHSPS Grads The graduating class of Central High Sedgewick Public School took advantage of relaxed public health measures by holding a special June graduation this year, on Friday, June 25. The class first paraded down Main Street Sedgewick in their finest dresses and tuxes, before heading to a limited ceremony at the school gymnasium. While the festivities were reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the important thing is the students got their much-deserved moments.

Hardisty and other area Fire Departments respond to large fire Monday during extreme heat wave Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Hardisty Fire Department was dispatched to an outside fire east of Hardisty on Monday, June 28.

The fire was burning north of the tank farm.

Firefighters say when they arrived on the scene, they discovered not one but two large fires burning.

Calling on mutual aid agreements with surrounding departments, Hardisty firefighters began to fight the first fire.

The Westend Fire and Rescue team, consisting of Amisk, Hughenden, and Czar, responded

quickly to the call and started to fight the second fire, located in steep terrain.

The Sedgewick Fire Department also responded, and the Killam Fire Department brought out the Flagstaff water tender, working to bring the hillside blaze under control.

When Hardisty Firefighters got the first fire under control, they joined the other departments in containing the second blaze, successfully extinguishing it.

Hardisty Fire Rescue said on their social media afterwards, “We would like to thank all those responded and busted their butts braving the extreme

heat.

“Your professionalism and expertise are always appreciated “Along with those listed below we’d also like to thank the employees of Husky who extinguished a third fire by their property and Enbridge employees for calling in the fire and getting us access to the area.”

The firefighters also expressed thanks to Remedy Oilfield Services for supplying and operating a bulldozer, to F5 Services for supplying additional water trucks; and to The Leaf Sports Pub and Grill for donating pizza for firefighters afterwards.

Hardisty Fire Department responded to a call of a fire burning east of Hardisty and north of the tank farm. Once on scene, firefighters discovered there were actually two large fires, and called in help from surrounding departments. The scale of the fire is evident from the Hardisty Fire Department photo below, showing fire fighters working on one area of the fire. To compound the difficulty in fighting this fire, temperatures in the area were still hovering above 30 degrees.

After a year’s delay, the Killam Chamber of Commerce will be starting their summer markets up this coming Saturday, July 3.

Originally planned for 2020, the group decided to delay until summer 2021 due to pandemic restrictions, and now are raring to go.

Chamber President Lois Polege says, “I do think it will draw people to town.

We are so in need of healthy ways to spend time together right now.”

Polege says that there are a nice variety of vendors booked for this com-

ing Saturday, and she’d like to see that grow and change over the summer.

The plan is to run the summer market every Saturday until September, when it will wrap up with the annual Scarecrow Festival.

Despite the province moving into Stage 3 on July 1, Polege says stalls will be distanced, and hand sanitizing stations will be made available for visitors.

She says the Killam Summer Market has the same hours as the Lakeside Market at Sedgewick Lake, but that there’s no reason why people couldn’t take both in.

children unattended in a vehicle. Temperatures skyrocket inside a vehicle and even on a cooler day, the inside of your car is too hot.

I know Eric and I will be hanging out in the basement as our upstairs has a hard time staying cool, even with our portable AC unit blasting all day long.

Letter: Residential Schools and the 2021 Social Studies curriculum This letter is two-fold addressing Historical Residential Schools and the 2021 Social Studies Curriculum.

Historical Residential Schools: First of all, I speak through experience and it comes from the bottom of my heart. I am a Residential School survivor, an 80-year-old mother and grandmother, and of Cree descent. There are not many of us left. Most of what has been said is from non-natives and the grandchildren of survivors.

History has been passed on and what I have read is hearsay. I am in the process of writing a book passing on my first-hand experiences. I hold an Elementary Teacher’s Degree and an Early Childhood Diploma.

My personal Residential School trials started in 1946 when I was six years old.

Being so young, I didn’t realize what was happening. However it didn’t take long for reality to kick in.

September 1946, a bunch of children were herded into a cattle truck. There was a lot of crying, then, and for a long time.

We were being taken away from our parents and our homes. In my case, I was being taken away from my grandfather and grandmother. I had three other siblings, all orphaned at an early age. Imagine the traumatic experience for us and all the other youngsters. The final destination was to the Blue Quills Residential School three miles west of St. Paul, Alberta. While I was

there my grandmother passed away. She cared for us and was very kind.

Oblate Priests and Grey Nuns, both of the Roman Catholic religion, were our designated caregivers. The initial principal was a very kind person and he really cared for his charges. He was there for three years, then was transferred. He came back in 1953 and 1954. I was so happy about his return.

In 1949 a different principal was sent to Blue Quills School. This priest turned out to be very mean. Kids know. I knew he did not like me. I don’t know why. In consequence, the only memory I have was very traumatic.

I was 14 in 1954 when I got into trouble with this priest. He wanted to see me in the girls’ cloak room alone. Reason given: I was not doing good in class, not as smart as my older sister according to him. I was so terrified. I was so frightened I giggled and he took this as laughter. I saw his fist coming towards me, which I ducked. I got the man’s fist on my left ear. To this day, I am deaf and require a hearing aid. Just so people know what we experienced at this unprotected age.

The book is more explicit and named names, which are in the public record.

My grandfather was sent to Red Deer Industrial School so he could learn a trade.

He was forced to leave home. Both my parents attended the Residential School.

they feel sorrowful for what I endured.

Personally, I am a native woman (always will be), treaty status since 1985. Lost status in 1962 when I married a non-status man, again a decree by our government. I was married to the same person for 58 years, a mother, a grandmother, a retired teacher, and Early Childhood Educator.

I have been discriminated against by native people, even my own relatives, and by white people. It used to make me cry, not anymore. I am proud of who I am as a person, most of my family loves me. What more do I want or need? We are all the same in the eyes of our maker. I am an anomaly.

Today in 2021, those children from BC that were found in unmarked graves, it happened to others. It was not a surprise to me, just the huge numbers.

My last words on these subjects are, “History is history, you cannot rewrite it.

You cannot erase history. Leave it alone!”

If I have offended anyone it was not intentional, but that was history as I lived and saw it. I am so surprised that so many people do not know the Residential School history. I share my experiences. There are very few of us left.

The book will go in depth and personalize my history, which synchronizes with Canadian history.

During their school years, the school was situated on the Saddle Lake Reserve. It was eventually moved due to kids running home.

It was jail, big time, no matter what anyone says. You were not there. The Government owned us. The truth hurts.

Social Studies Curriculum: Governmentdecreed history points the finger to the first Canadian Prime Minister John A. McDonald, who spearheaded a decree that all native children are to be sent to government-sponsored facilities run by religious groups. This is the Residential School History that has been in place since his reign.

I understand the Alberta Social Studies Curriculum from Grades 1 to 6 is now redundant, old history, too painful, too shameful. To whom, may I ask? The whites, Alberta Education Minister LeGrange, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Indian Affairs Ministers? The powers that be think that these younger children will not understand.

I, myself, understood at the end of my six years. Today our Elementary School-aged children know more than what we think. I taught in native communities to students from Grades 2 and 6. They asked me questions. Besides being a teacher, I was also a resource, even to this day. My children knew, my white friends knew. They soak up information, they shake their heads,

Letter: Frustrated with lack of action on Hardisty student issues Dear Editor; Interesting to see that Battle River School Division has $5 million for a new Division Head Office, but could not afford to keep Hardisty School open.

We had estimated that school enrollment in Hardisty would be up to 56 students this year from 44 last year. That was

based solely on existing families within the area who had committed to Hardisty.

Did you know our Town has gained an additional 12 school-aged students in the last year alone - even without having a school? These families still chose to move to Hardisty. That would put our school population at 68 this year and 76 next year!

Battle River School Division continues to drag their heels for what reasons? They will not allow our community take control of the school building, nor will they let neighboring school divisions in to pick up our students.

Our group is still fighting to move the school situation forward, however it has

been crickets from the Province. There is no accountability in our school system and Battle River School Division spending $5 million when they can't afford to keep schools open proves it!

We cannot wait on Bill C-206, say Canada’s grain farmers The Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) and Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) are calling on the Senate to vote and pass Bill C-206 before Parliament rises for the summer recess.

“This is not about politics, this about what farmers need,” said GGC chair Andre Harpe.

“With an important summer and harvest season ahead of us, we urge the Senate to rapidly approve this bill so we can work on meeting our country’s ambitious growth targets for the agricultural sector.”

Bill C-206, An Act to Amend the IN ASSOCIATION WITH:

Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, expands the existing exemption from the price on pollution for qualifying farm fuels to include propane and natural gas.

The expansion of this exemption is critical to grain farmers who often need to dry their grain prior to marketing it.

Bill C-206 passed through the House of Commons with strong bipartisan support– including affirmative votes coming from the Conservative, New Democratic, Bloc Quebecois, and Green parties.

But Flagstaff fans, and Killam fans in particular, have a special reason to cheer on the Canadiens, especially goaltender

Small businesses open for business, but sales still suffering Leslie Cholowsky Editor

According to a poll conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) almost nine out of 10 Canadians say they wish they could do more to support small business in their community. However, a majority of them, 60 per cent, say they’ve been spending more at big box stores and online giants during the pandemic.

The CFIB has a plan to change that.

“With Alberta fully reopening on July 1, we have a big opportunity to show our small business the love and support they desperately need,” said Annie Dormuth, CFIB Alberta provincial affairs director.

The latest data gathered by the CFIB says that 77 per cent of small businesses are now fully open, with just under half also fully staffed. Unfortunately, just 38 per cent of them are reporting making normal sales.

“Small businesses are relieved that the worst of the COVID storm seems to be behind us, but for many of them the cleanup, including dealing with piles of debt, is daunting and exhausting in a new way. That’s why we are excited to give everyone an opportunity to benefit from showing their favourite businesses some love,” said Laura Jones, CFIB executive vice president.

To encourage Canadians to support small business, CFIB is bringing back its #SmallBusinessEveryDay contest from last year, but with six

times the prize money for consumers and business owners, almost $300,000.

Consumers can go to smallbusinesseveryday.c a and send a thank you message to any small business in Canada.

That message then gets relayed to the business, and the consumer is entered to win a cash prize of $2,000, plus gift cards.

The good news doesn’t stop there, however. If selected, the nominated small business wins $10,000, plus the same gift cards.

In addition to the weekly cash prizes of $10,000, Microban 24 is offering bonus cash prizes to help small businesses reopen safely with 100 bonus prizes of $2,400 to be drawn from all nominated businesses at the contest’s close.

“This contest gives consumers an easy way to say thank you and support small businesses with the added bonus of possibly winning some money to shop local. It’s a win-win and last year businesses were so moved by the nominations of their customers," says Jones.

The contest is open from June 28 to July 25, and prizes are drawn on a weekly basis.

Back in 1982, the Killam Indians won the Provincial Senior Mens C finals, and guess who was in goal, but Jerry Price, father of the famous Montreal net minder, Carey.

Dallas Ellerby, who was the managing captain of the team that season, says that as it happened, he, his brother Cal, and cousins Bernie Doan and Jerry Price, who all grew up in the Coronation and Veteran

areas. All went forward to play high level hockey, either drafted to the NHL or semi-pro teams, found themselves back home that season, in 1981-82.

They thought it would be a terrific opportunity to play together, Ellerby says, when GM Bill Gibb from Killam contacted them about playing for Killam.

“We all grew up together, and since going our different ways, hadn’t played together in years,” Ellerby says.

That was the only season the four cousins played together for Killam.

Price moved on after that season, playing one more season with the Hampton Roads Gulls in 1982-83 before moving to BC..

Price was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft; Bernie Doan was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. Dallas Ellerby played in five dif-

ferent leagues, notably the Western Hockey League, for the Calgary Centennials and Edmonton Oil Kings, and Calvin Ellerby played for the Calgary Wranglers.

Ellerby says one thing he remembers was having such a great fan base.

He says, “We would go on the road and 200 people would come to the games wearing the green and gold.

“When we played at home the Killam rink would be packed.”

I was driving home from my trailer last night and noticed that the farmers are making hay. Wow, it’s that time of year.

Last week I was outside working in my yard and noticed lots of cars over at the sports ground and

lots of guys on the diamond. I dropped what I was doing, jumped in my car, went over, and watched the first ball game of the year. The Heisler men’s team played Amisk and lost by one.

Gibson Place Youth program opening this Friday in Killam Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Gibson Place is a new program funded by Gibson Energy to promote interaction among youth ages 12 to 17.

The program will be held in the space formerly occupied by the Flagstaff County program ‘Nights Alive,’ in the basement area of the FFCS building in Killam.

This new program was announced this time last year, but opening was delayed due to the pandemic. With Alberta moving into Stage 3 on July 1st, the grand opening will be held Friday, July 2.

Friday’s activities will start at 4 p.m. with a small informal program, with the remainder of the evening open to all Flagstaff youth to come and check it out. FFCS

and FIRST Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson says “We will be offering chicken wings and pizza, and other than that is a drop in, come and introduce yourself, and have fun on a Friday night.”

Gibson Energy has not only committed $25,000 to this pilot project, which will allow the program to operate every friday fo a year, they have also committed volunteer hours in the program, with many volunteers from Gibson employees in Hardisty.

Part of the project will include ways that these volunteers can contribute, working alongside youth in projects and events implemented to build self-esteem, confidence, knowledge, and to decrease the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

These projects could in-

clude volunteering at local agencies, working at local schools to build relationships with younger individuals, and even job shadowing to see educational and career opportunities. That part of the project is still in the planning stage.

“We have 3,000 square feet, and are able to accommodate up to 35 youth while practicing safe social distancing,” says Jenkinson.

She says that there have been two individuals hired for the project.

Keegan Petreman will be the project coordinator, and Chloe Fee will assist.

Petreman has experience with the former Nights Alive program, and Jenkinson says he’s a great fit for coordinator of the new project.

Jenkinson said, “Lessons learned from Nights Alive told organizers that youth-driven programming versus informal ‘hanging out’ is a lot more effective in keeping youth interested and also increases participation levels.

“The Youth Mental Wellness project will enable Flagstaff youth to make human connections with people their own age and adult supervisors who can provide healthy relationship role models and assistance in

connecting to community.”

FIRST is actively looking for other partners to expand the program to include more days per week, as well as partnering with other companies, corporations, and community members for various projects down the road.

Jenkinson says that the Gibson Place project will be able to access the CareA-Van, at a cost, to pick up out-of-town youth at chosen times of year for events, programs, and

projects.

She says, “The Youth Mental Wellness Project will make a positive, measurable impact on the 12- to 17-year-olds in our community.

“The youth who need a place to go will have one; they will feel empowered and connected to their community.”

Jenkinson says, “We will build on the program from here, as we now have the freedom to do so. We look forward to working with everyone on this project.”

Two Daysland School students Legion District winners

Daysland Legion members judged Literary and Poster Contest entries from Daysland and Bawlf schools on Dec. 2. Thomas placed first in Junior Poem and Madison placed first in Intermediate Poem against 13 entries in each category. Then all of the first-place entries were delivered to Wainwright for judging at the District level where they would be judged against the 24 Branches in District 3 of the Legionʼs AB/NWT Command. Both Thomas and Madison's poems placed first in their categories at this level as well. Daysland School students and staff have been very supportive of the Daysland Legionʼs Literary and Poster Contest and have routinely done well at the next levels of judging. Our family enjoyed a great weekend of camping. Perfect weather and perfect view. Being outdoors from morning until late evening sure did wonders for our #1000hoursoutside challenge.

Usually we have a set bedtime however, when camping, different rules

apply. We now have entered the 400 hour mark.

With half the year gone, it isn't as far as I'm hoping to be, so hopefully a few more camping trips this season will get us ahead to get closer to the 1,000 hours in another six months.

Since the heat wave is continuing, make sure to drink lots of water and take breaks from the sun.

Lakes, spray parks, and pools are definitely the preferred hangout this week. Stay cool.

The Davidsons are working on a gymkhana event for July 1.

The library is hosting a storybook walk, bike decorating, a bike parade, kids’ old fashioned games, and ice cream treats at the gathering place (old school grounds) on the afternoon of July 1.

Parkland Regional Library has supplied us with a 14-page children's book all done up on poster boards to create an outside story walk. When we were looking at when to have it we decided that July 1 would be appropriate.

Les Smith has gone to stay with his daughter following the loss of his wife Beth. Beth's brother is now staying in the house to settle up affairs. He was kind enough to go across the street and mow the lawn for Julia Feltham.

The Nychoporuks saw Vickie Cloakey out mowing her lawn and took over the job.

Everyone is looking for something to do for Dell and Randy Wickstrom.

They are a very popular couple and we all hate to see them struggle with Dell's illness.

There have been mortgage burning parties to celebrate the end of being tied down by a mortgage. I think we should be able to have a great big mask burning party.

• Make recommendations to the Agricultural Fieldman regarding performance management, including hiring and/or dismissal of seasonal staff.

• Maintains membership in good standing with the Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen.

Vaccine hesitancy in local regions increases risk for future outbreaks Patricia Harcourt Vaccine hesitancy in rural areas is becoming a source of concern for provincial officials, who last Friday appealed to commandeer local media outlets to convince holdouts to get their COVID19 shots.

A special rural media teleconference was held with Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and provincial Health Minister Tyler Shandro.

“Tonight we are focusing on rural media outlets,” said Hinshaw, because “rural areas have lower protection levels across the province.”

If people in these areas aren’t immunized, they could form pockets of outbreaks in the fall and be more susceptible to more severe outcomes if that happens, she said.

The province is “on the

doorstep” of entering Stage 3 on July 1, added Shandro, with more than 70 per cent of people having their first vaccine dose, and nearing the 40 per cent mark for people with both doses.

Shandro said the more people getting vaccinated, the greater the level of immunity to the virus. As the province moves from a pandemic situation to an endemic, there will be more personal responsibility to stay healthy and deal with it, he said, as is now happening with the flu virus.

To encourage people to get their COVID-19 shot, “we want to provide the most up-to-date information to help someone make a decision that is right for them,” Hinshaw said, adding this means getting them the correct information rather than some prevailing rumours

and false ideas about the vaccine that is helping to promote hesitancy.

She pointed out that, in early January, well over 95.5 per cent of all cases of COVID-19 were people with no vaccine protection, including those in hospital.

False information included some people drawing false conclusions when they see someone who got a vaccine became sick a few days later. Hinshaw said this does not mean that vaccines aren’t effective in preventing illness.

Protection does not kick in after a vaccine until two weeks have passed so people have to wait at least that long for the antibodies to build up before protection is possible. People who don’t realize that will act as if they are protected immediately, expose themselves to infection and get

sick within that twoweek time frame. Then others think the vaccines aren’t working, which Hinshaw said isn’t true.

In fact, of those who have become sick, just 0.3 per cent were diagnosed after getting a vaccine dose, while a fraction of that small percentage had

two doses.

“Vaccines clearly are working against disease as we move into a time of fewer restrictions,” she said.

“There are some communities that could be vulnerable to surges in places where there are low coverage rates,” she

OBITUARIES Mary “Molly” Theresa Schneider

September 17, 1937 to June 18, 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary (Molly) Theresa Schneider; loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister who passed away peacefully on the family farm on June 18 at the age of 83.

Mary was born to Irish immigrant parents Thomas and Margret (Huges) Conlon. She was raised on the homestead in the Clandonald area.

Mary lost her parents at a young age and lived in the convent until the age of 18. She left Clandonald, went to Calgary, obtained her nursing certificate, started her career being a nurse, and

cherished her many years working at the Daysland hospital.

Mary married Donald Schneider on August 15, 1959; they raised their four children: Cathy, George, Bruno, and Brent in the Spring Lake area They lived there until her and Donnie moved to Providence Place in 2012.

Her memory will be cherished by all that knew her. Mary leaves behind her children Catherine (Willy) Lorentz of Airdrie, George Schneider of Daysland, and Brent (Mary Ann) Schneider of Daysland; her five grandchildren Dawn, Hayden, Breann, Matthew, J’lyn; and five great-grandchildren Cole, Cory, Catherine, Michelle, and Caleb. She is also survived by her sister Ann (Lawrence) Bonneville of Edmonton and numerous nieces and nephews; Schneider inlaw’s Geraldine, Genevieve, Mel (RoseMarie), Jean (Art) Irvin

(Catherine), and numerous other friends and family.

She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Margret, husband Donald, son Bruno, brothers Thomas and Patrick, and sisters Josie, Lilly, and Isabel.

Richard Leo Conrad

September 9, 1932 to June 24, 2021 Richard Leo Conrad passed away June 24, 2021, at the age of 88.

Richard was born September 9, 1932, in Vogler’s Cove, Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force for 24 years, after which he was ordained to the Anglican Church where he served his Lord until his passing.

Richard was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion – Branches #180 Lougheed, #65 Killam, and #55 Sedgewick. He devoted himself to many of the activities of the Legion.

He was also involved with the Masonic Lodge. He was the Chaplain for the RCMP AB NWT Command.

He worked effortlessly for the

Killam Hospital Foundation.

Survived by his children Richard II, Terri (Joe), Kathy, and Bobby (Karen); seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, as well as his dear companion Stormy.

He is also survived by numerous relatives in his beloved Nova Scotia, including four brothers: Gary, Lester, Wilson, Edward, and a sister, Valerie.

Richard is predeceased by one son, Robert Allan,

his grandson Herman, his sister Joan, and his beloved wife Doreen, as well as their loyal companion Ebony.

At Richard’s request, there will be no services.

Cremation has taken place.

He will once again be joined with the love of his life in the Killam Cemetery.

OBITUARY Joseph James Cameron

October 26, 1939 to June 9, 2021 Joseph James Cameron passed away peacefully on June 9, 2021, at the Hardisty Health Centre, at the age of 81. He was laid to rest on June 18 at the Lougheed Cemetery.

Joe was born on October 26, 1939 in the Galahad Hospital and was the first child of Duncan and Esther Cameron. The family later grew to include John (1941) and Elsie (1946).

Shortly after Joe was born, Duncan and Esther purchased the homestead farm, south of Bellshill, from Esther’s father, where they resided until their retirement.

Along with many of his cousins, Joe began his education at Dry Crossing School. When this school closed, he attended Science Hill School. His teacher, Lloyd Cameron (Duncan’s cousin), used his own car as a “school bus,” ensuring everyone got to school.

When the school closed in 1952, Joe attended and eventually graduated from Central High Sedgewick Public School.

It was during his youth that Joe became a Boy Scout and embraced their values and principles, using these as a compass to guide his way.

After high school, Joe attended the Vermillion School of Agriculture and graduated in 1959. He then worked at a variety of jobs, including working in Trail, BC, for a few years in the

logging industry and as a window washer. It wasn’t long before the call of the prairies brought him back home. During this time, he honed his carpentry skills, working on many different projects with his dad and uncles. He eventually took over the family farm until his retirement as a Seed Grower.

Joe was a man of vision and innovation. After a trip to Kansas for research, he was one of the first farmers in the area to begin zero-till farming. He was also a pioneer and the first to grow field peas in the ‘90s.

Joe’s first marriage was to Hetty, making him an instant father to three boys: David, Ed, and Scott.

He then married Glenda and became a Dad to Myra and Courtney. Finally, at the age of 51, he welcomed his daughter, Heather, into the family. As a board member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association (and president of the Alberta branch for one term), he had the opportunity to attend conventions all across Canada and he loved to bring his family along.

Joe was a man who served his community and was devoted to numerous associations. He was a board member of the Lougheed Seed Cleaning Plant and the Battle River Credit Union for 25 years and he was a dedicated member of the Lougheed Lions Club, participating in many fundraisers and events. When he moved to Lougheed, he was honoured to become the Mayor and took all of his responsibilities very seriously. Joe also hosted annual Alzheimer’s Teas to raise funds for a cause he was passionate about.

Joe loved nothing more than visiting with friends and family. He was delighted to provide a place for his “coffee crowd” and enjoyed debating and laughing with the group.

The coffee was always on and the crib board was always ready. His favourite activities included bingo, whist drives, watching curling, attending church, and celebrating birthdays and holidays with friends and family.

During the last four and a half years of his life, Joe was no longer able to remain at home and, with grace, moved into longterm care. He never lost his sense of humour, nor did he ever feel sorry for himself. He was a shining inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

His love of life and his faith in God kept him strong.

In the twilight of Joe’s life, he once again found love, and became engaged to a wonderful woman, Karen Lenton, on March 22, 2021. Joe wanted a big wedding, celebrating with all of his loved ones, but God had another plan for our “Gentle Giant.” Although it broke our hearts to say goodbye, we know he is now in the loving arms of the angels and our heavenly Father.

Joe is survived by his fiance, Karen Lenton, daughters Heather, Courtney (Mike), and Myra; sons David, Ed, and Scott; daughter-in-law Tracy; grandchildren Darien, Rebecca, Krystal (Will), Michael, and Naomi; as well as five great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Hardisty Health Centre for the amazing care they provided Joe with. They went

A service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in

Sedgewick on Saturday, July 24, at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow. We hope that everybody is able to attend at that time.

There is a lower vaccination rate in Tofield (Beaver County West) at 61 per cent as of that date. The M.D. of Wainwright’s vaccination rate is 64.2 per cent, only slightly higher.

Rates are a little better in Flagstaff County with a vaccination rate of 65.3 per cent.

Hinshaw said she also comes from a small rural community and understands some of the reasons why people haven’t received their vaccine to this point.

There are barriers that people find difficulty in overcoming. If a person tries to get a booking with the local pharmacist or clinic but can’t at that time, that person lives a busy life and doesn’t have time to find another location in an adjacent community.

“We need to have to make vaccine more available,” she said, expecting shipments of both Moderna and Pfizer could help ease that issue.

Hinshaw also credited misinformation and “persistent beliefs” that are circulating in rural areas for keeping people away. For instance, there is the idea that an illness of COVID-19 will get worse if you are infected right after getting your shot and before protection has been built up.

“That is not true,” she said, saying that only .03 per cent have been infected right after getting a dose. “And they don’t get sicker, it actually helps them stay out of the hospital and not get a more severe illness.”

Shandro added that some young people feel they don’t need to get a vaccine because they are healthy or they have already had the illness.

Others don’t see the point as the province gets closer to Stage 3 and the reopening for summer.

“Some may think they don’t need to get a shot themselves,” he said.

“This is why I continue to urge people to get their first dose and then their second dose.

“This is a source of concern, yes, and severe outcomes,” he said.

“That’s why we will continue to push for uptick in those communities going into the fall.”

Hinshaw addressed a case in the southwest corner of Alberta where the vaccine uptake is high but some people are still getting the illness, so people are asking “why bother?” to a vaccine.

Because the vaccines are “beginning the process of building protection,” she said, but people are failing to recognize that they need two weeks to become set.

“If you get sick the day after (getting the shot), you don’t have any more protection than the day before you got it,” she explained, which is why people have to wait to build up immunity.

Hinshaw’s big concern in rural areas is that half of younger age groups have no protection.

“And people as they gather together can spread it. You can still see transmission if even one person isn’t vaccinated.” She noted that “in the younger age groups you have much fewer vaccinations than people who are over 75.

“COVID is still going to spread if you have a community with a low coverage rate, it can still spread quickly and easily,” she said. “So now is the best time to get the vaccine so you are protected in the fall.

“We’re still living with COVID,” she said, urging people “in the summer to get that wall of protection for yourself and protect your communities.”

Increasing access to vaccines is being considered, including using drive-ins and walk-in clinics. But the concern with those is the potential for wastage as the number of people is not known at any such

event.

The province plans to partner with pharmacists to have Moderna vaccine available to try and encourage people to come forward.

Hinshaw also stressed that “we need communities to understand (that) protection comes from the vaccine,” adding: “The provincial approach was the simplest, easiest to understand.”

So if a community has a lower vaccine average, “we are trying to get the message out that vaccines make it happen,” she said, referring to the province opening up restrictions this summer.

The Province announced Tuesday, June 29 that along with the three million dollar prizes available to those who receive a first and second dose, additional prizes from the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Elks, Calgary Stampeders, and Kananaskis Country Golf Course have been added. To be eligible for these new prizes, Albertans must register for the Open for Summer lottery

by July 22, and the winners of these prizes will be announced July 29.

Extreme heat’s effects on agricultural production

In most crops, severe heat stress will push along maturity resulting in shorter crops, less yield, smaller seeds, and an earlier harvest.

The only crop we grow that thrives on heat is corn. As long as it has sufficient water, corn prefers to grow at temperatures above 30 degrees celsius.

It uses a different energy pathway that is more efficient at 30 degrees celsius and greater than our temperate crops.

These extreme temperatures, combined with the lack of runoff in the spring, have also affected ground water for livestock use. The lack of freshwater inflow from runoff this spring, coupled with heat and increased surface evaporation, means some dugouts may become unusable as salts in the water

This story is worth the share: There was a woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So, as she was getting her things “in order,” she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at her service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in.

The woman also requested to be buried with her favourite bible.

Everything was in order and the pastor was about to leave, when the woman suddenly remembered something very important to her.

“There’s one more thing,” she said excitedly.

“What’s that?” came the pastors reply. “This is very important,” the woman continued. “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.”

The pastor stood looking at the woman, not knowing quite what to say.

“That surprises you, doesn’t it?” the woman asked.

“Well, to be honest, I am puzzled by the request,” said the pastor.

The woman explained; “In all my years of attending church socials and potluck dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and

say, “Keep your fork.”

“It was my favourite part because I knew that something better was coming... like velvety chocolate cake or deepdish apple pie. Something wonderful and with substance! So I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder, ‘What’s with the fork?’

Then I want you to tell them: Keep your fork...

The best is yet to come.”

The pastors eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the woman goodbye.
