Fuel tax credit extended; rebates to start in July Leslie Cholowsky Editor

As the cost of fuel remains alarmingly high, the Province announced last Wednesday that Albertans will continue to save 13 cents per litre for at least another three months. As long as West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices stay about $90 per barrel, the province says it will continue the program, evaluating it quarterly. For the four-week period ending June 15, WTI averaged $115.88 per barrel. The Province is also urging Ottawa to consider similar consumer relief measures. The electricity rebates promised earlier this year should also start arriving on July bills, the Province also announced Wednesday. More than 1.9 million homes, farms, and small businesses will receive

monthly credits of $50 on their July, August, and September electricity bills. The Province says it has worked closely with electricity distributors and retailers to develop and implement the rebate, which is being applied directly to eligible utility bills. No application or other action will be required to receive the rebate. The Province says consumers who believe they meet the eligibility criteria but who have not received any rebates by the end of July should contact the Utility Consumer Advocate at 310-4822. The rebate should appear on utility bills as a separate line item called “GOA Utility Commodity Rebate.” Wednesday’s announcement also referred to an upcoming natural gas rebate to protect Albertans from price spikes, starting this October, with more

details to be announced later in the summer. Just days earlier, a warning went out about energy rebate scams that are presently circulating in the province. Albertans have reported receiving texts falsely claiming to be from the Provincial government. In these texts, recipients are

invited to apply for the energy rebate by clicking a link. This is a phishing scam, trying to lure potential victims into providing personal and/or banking information, and should be disregarded. No application is required to receive the electricity rebate.

Province to provide school divisions with financial relief Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Province announced last week that it will be reinstating the Fuel Price Contingency Program to give school authorities greater cost certainty while monthly average diesel prices remain above $1.25/litre. This program will be applied retroactively to March 2022 and will remain in place throughout the 2022-23 school year. Education Minister Adriana LaGrange says, “By providing further fuel cost relief to support transportation services for more than 300,000

kindergarten to Grade 12 students, we are helping prevent service reductions and additional fees for families. With high diesel prices expected to continue, Alberta’s government continues its commitment to ensuring school boards and public charter schools have predictable and sustainable transportation funding.” In total the program will provide Alberta school divisions with approximately $8.2 million in additional student transportation funding from March through June in the current school year, based on an estimated actual cost of $1.80/litre for diesel fuel. Battle River School Division Board

Chair Karen Belich says, “At the moment, BRSD Transportation’s budge has been able to absorb the additional costs of diesel fuel for school buses,. We know that is not the case for all school divisions, and we have supported their advocacy for a fuel price contingency program.” She adds, “With the cost of diesel fuel continuing to rise and project to stay high for the foreseeable future, we are grateful for the additional financial support as we move forward into next school year.” BRSD’s 2021-22 budget factored an expense of $5.75 million for transportation, up by over $1.5 million over 2019-

20s budgeted amount, and around $150,000 less than the 2020-21 budget. Seven per cent of the division’s total budgeted expenditures are for transportation, including the purchase of school buses, salaries and training for drivers, and maintenance. According to the BRSD 2021-24 Education Plann the division’s buses travel 8,420 km every school day. The Province estimates that fuel costs make up 20 to 25 per cent of all school authority’s student transportation budget. The Fuel Price Contingency Program ran from 2005 to 2009, then again for 2011 to 2013.
