“YOU DID IT!” 2021 Viking Grads Celebrate Patricia Harcourt Editor

“Congratulations! You did it!” That was the theme of this year’s Viking graduation.

Twenty-three grads took to the stage on Friday, June 18, in a virtual ceremony including immediate families in the audience. Also present were Principal Adam Madsen, Vice-Principal Kelly Arial, and Mistress of Ceremonies Veronica Hafso Many others watched the event live streamed over social media to bear witness to this important passage in their lives.

This was a unique year in many ways as the COVID-19 pandemic kept the community away from the formal celebrations. Also, students from the Holden area were part of the class for their final year of high school, transferring to Viking after the closure of Ryley School’s high school a year ago.

Still, the school and grad families came together and gave the grads a warm sendoff, starting with MC Hafso, who said: “We’re very proud of all of See GRAD P3

Class President Bayley Haeberle thanked the class’ parents, teachers and community for all their help over the years.

“Small towns create a bonded connection,” she said, making everyone family and “near and dear” to her heart. “They experience life with, and bear witness to, our life,” she said, adding that “shared experiences help shape who we are.”

Still, she was both “excited to get to the next stage but also scared,” as well, realizing this new chapter in their lives means having to face hardships. But Haeberle also talked about drawing comfort from the past experiences she has shared with other students.

“I’m confident I could call on anyone in our class and they would be there for me,” she said.

The grads’ parents taught them to “take opportunity in life” and “be adaptable and responsible for your own actions.” She called family “the most powerful aspect in

my life,” where she learned that “kindness gets you further in life (and) in order to gain respect you must give respect.”

But there will always be “no place like home.”

Several speakers gave virtual presentations to the grads.

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely wished them “all the best” including health and happiness.

Town of Viking CAO Don McLeod said that the town was “very proud you endured and made it through one of the most difficult periods in the last 50 years.”

He told them to “draw on the experience and skill of the last 18 months.”

“These are times you will always remember what is going on in the world,” said Viking Mayor Jason Ritchie.

“We have seen many different changes and experiences over the last few months.

“Congratulations for getting through all this,” he said.

“Remember where your roots are, if you need help and encouragement it will always be there.”

President Erin Hollar’s message. “Congratulations each and every one of you for your flexibility and adjusting to all the changes,” she said, noting the skills the grads have acquired over the last year will be lifelong lessons on how to adapt to life’s changes.

“Go forth, be kind, be. brave,” she told them.

Throughout the presentations, grads Carter Chomik and Dylan Haydon read out amusing predictions for each of the grads entitled “Most Likely To’s.”

Beaver County East Trustee Lyle Oberg paid a virtual tribute to the grads during this time of the pandemic and school closure in Holden.

“This class has seen the most turmoil than any other previous classes,” he said, referring to Holden students moving to Viking and learning to work remotely due to the pandemic.

“Always be positive, outgoing and confident,” he said. ”It’s up to you to make your

mark in this life.” He also urged them to “take pride in what you are doing,” adding: “Life will be good if you are happy in what you are doing.”

Beaver County’s Division 5 Councillor Dale Pederson also praised the students. “The class has had to endure the ups and downs of the COVID pandemic (and) succeeded,” in spite of it, he said. He also urged them to “try and embrace change,” and urged them to “remember your rural roots.”

Principal Adam Madsen gave his own take on the past pandemic year. “To say the road of your high school year was difficult is an understatement,” he said, with “a lot of change and uncertainty leading up to graduation.”

But he also called it “an important milestone and springboard to the next chapter of your life…We are all very proud of you.”

Then he introduced video messages from his colleagues and the grads’ former teachers in Viking and Ryley schools.

At its conclusion, Madsen said: “We wish you success and happiness in whatever the future holds.”

Grad Victoria Reil said she wrote her Valedictorian Address “from the heart,” and their parents’ love and patience were central to each grad’s success. In thanking the teachers she noted that despite the grads being “quite a handful,” they managed to teach life lessons such as learning to “trusting the process and that to get respect you must give it.

“Their guidance helped us become better people,” she said. “Our most significant achievement by far is our strength.” She acknowledged the Holden students that joined them in Grade 12, and said the class has been “brave, strong and smart”in dealing with the issues of that year.

She ended by wishing for each grad to find “good things out there” in the word. “I love you guys and we did it.”

The ceremonies concluded with the Recessional. As each grad left the stage they were handed a diploma by Principal Madsen and a flower

by Vice-Principal Arial.

The evening also took on some poignancy with the announcement that this was Principal Madsen’s final year at the school.

Pet food drive a huge success for Sierra Loades tribute Patricia Harcourt Editor

The Pet Food Drive in memory of Sierra Loades was an enormous success with both the community and school in Viking contributing food and cash to the Viking Holden and Area Food Bank.

When it was all over, the food bank had a large array of foods for pets that can be distributed to people using the services who also have companion animals to feed.

On top of the food, the food bank also received $930 in cash donations, according to Charla McClements, food bank secretary. These funds will also go towards food for the pets.

The pet food fundraiser was held for the first time this year

in honour of Sierra, who was 12 at the time of her passing.

She was an avid animal lover so family and friends felt this was the best way to remember her in honour of a good cause.

The Viking School also participated in the fundraising efforts, holding a contest to gather up pet food and cash donations.

Krissy Loades, Sierra’s mom, reported that the Grade 2 class won the school contest for having the most pet food donations. Each student in the class received a gift certificate courtesy of J.D. Construction.

The pet food drive officially ran from June 6 to 12.

Donation bins were set up in various locations around Sierra’s classmates from Grade 10 picking up the donated food Viking for people to drop off to be delivered to food bank. their pet food items, or give cash donations.

“Mr. Speaker, each year on June 15, our province recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. “Seniors helped build this province, and are the strength of Alberta.

“Unfortunately, they are not always treated with the respect they deserve. Elder abuse is a serious issue in Alberta.

“Prior to 2020, we estimated nearly one in 10

Alberta seniors were subjected to some form of abuse.

“Since then, we have heard community organizations are reporting an increase in the incidence, complexity, and severity of elder abuse cases in Alberta.

“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an important occasion for us to stand together and raise our voices against elder abuse. It is also important for us to find ways to take action.

“Earlier today, the

Minister of Seniors and Housing announced several new ways this government is working with Alberta communities to prevent and address elder abuse.

This includes providing $650,000 to 16 organizations in partnership with the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council.

“Alberta’s government will also be undertaking an engagement to update how we respond to elder abuse. It will open up a dialogue with stakeholders and

Albertans to better understand, recognize, and prevent it at the community level.

“Mr. Speaker, we know elder abuse is a complex issue. We know it will take the work of

many of us, all across the province to solve it. This is why we are working closely with community partners to examine it at a local level.

“Mr. Speaker, I believe if we stand united, we

can keep all seniors safe and free from abuse.

“This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, I ask all Albertans to wear purple and stand with me against elder abuse.

“Thank you.”

No plastic...unless you package it Yesterday I went to our monthly community food swap morning and noticed that many of the people had paper bags to take produce home, which is in line with our environmental approach.

I joked that the paper bags would come in a

plastic bag and yes, they do!

The local supermarkets here have banned us from using plastic bags which I support but they still use lots of them including selling their organic vegetables and fruit in plastic containers and bags.

Have I missed the point or is the world just getting crazier?

No more plastic? Not until the people packaging everything get on board.

Word on the Street: local RCMP called to help in Killam after prisoner becomes violent On June 14, police learned that 36-year-old Tonya Scott-Loga from Edmonton failed to attend Vegreville Provincial Court as required to answer to a fraud charge stemming out of Viking. A warrant was issued for her arrest and an additional charge has been laid under the Criminal Code for failing to attend court.

On June 15, police received third party information regarding a possible impaired driver

in the Viking area.

Viking RCMP were not in a position to try intercept the vehicle so the information was shared with neighbouring detachments. Vermilion RCMP located the suspect vehicle in Innisfree and after investigation, the driver was issued a 24-hour suspension and a violation ticket for Sec. 9(5) RDHS-Fail to Sign Daily Log at End of Work Shift.

The Town of Viking has a bylaw establishing a truck route down Hwy. 619 but CAO Don McLeod said signs are needed to confirm this in the minds of truck drivers coming into town.

The issue arose at town council’s June 21 meeting when Councillor Judy Acres said that large delivery trucks are going from the north end of the service road to 55th Avenue, which is then being used to access downtown or other destinations.

Residents have complained to her about the truck traffic and noise in this residential neighbourhood, she said, and were listening to the meeting via YouTube.

But McLeod said that signs are on their way to help with the problem.

“Signs have been ordered,” he said, and “a

truck route bylaw was passed previously…We need to get the signs up, call the companies and tell them 55th is not a truck route.”

If the truck route on the 619 was used, McLeod said the drivers can turn off that road to “access everything.”

The signs are expected to arrive between the mid to the end of July, “and everybody will be aware” of the truck route once they are installed, he said.

Acres repled that “it is important to keep them off the residential areas.”

Councillor Deb O’Toole-Balaban agreed, stating the trucks also overuse another residential area along 54th Avenue.

“It just boggles my mind sometimes,” she said, “the traffic we have on this avenue.”

Acres said it was “a question of educating them,” referring to the truck drivers.

vacant property southwest of Viking. The complainant advised suspects broke the lock on the gate, entered the property and pried open a door on a trailer that was parked there. Nothing appeared to be missing. This matter is still under investigation.

That same day, police responded to an urgent call for assistance from Killam RCMP as a prisoner in their custody had become violent and combative while being treated at the Killam Health Centre. When the Viking member arrived on scene, the prisoner was under control and arrangements were made to eventually have him transported to the Remand Centre.

On June 18, police received a complaint of a break and enter to a seacan located behind a business in Viking.

The thieves broke and

stole the locks, entered the seacan and stole a bicycle. Police have no suspects at this time.

On June 20, police received a report of a single vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on Secondary 857 south of Bruce. The driver lost control on the gravel road, entered the ditch and then fell off the bike, which then flipped three times. He was transported to the Viking Health Centre by EMS with minor injuries.

That evening, police were called to a seniors’ facility to assist with an agitated resident. Police attended and stayed on scene until the resident calmed down and the incident de-escalated.

During this time period, police also dealt with several traffic collisions involving wildlife and issued numerous violation tickets for various traffic offences.

Premier throws open the doors for Stage 3 with few restrictions on July 1 Patricia Harcourt Editor

Premier Jason Kenney announced the province had reached the 70 per cent first dose threshold last Friday, signalling the open for summer plan had worked, and the dropping of almost all COVID-19 restrictions as of July 1.

“This is a happy day for Alberta,” he said, at a press conference on Friday, June 18.

“Yesterday, we officially passed 70 per cent.”

He went on to explain that by that Friday, the percentage was 70.2 per cent.

“On July 1, the health restrictions will be lifted and our lives will get back to normal. I never doubted Albertans (would) pull together in the true Alberta spirit.”

With needles going into arms starting last December for first doses of COVID-19 vaccine, Kenney thanked the health care workers doing the job of 2.7 million vaccinations to date.

As of Canada Day, there will be no more restrictions on how many people can gather for weddings, funerals, barbeques, festivals, sports games and events like the Calgary Stampede, he said.

But he advised people to “still follow common sense and to use good judgement,” including keeping the hygiene habits and using the personal responsibility learned during the pandemic.

Kenney also thanked the vaccine for giving the province the upper hand against the COVID-19 virus. He also credited the province’s 70 per cent plus vaccination rate for there having been a

45 per cent drop in the number of people hospitalized and a 53 per cent drop in the numbers going into intensive care.

“The end of this terrible time is just two weeks away,” he said, asking everyone “to go the last mile together.”

He also called on everyone with a first shot to go ahead and get their second vaccine dose as soon as possible.

But as of July 1, “we’re open for summer and we’re open for good.”

Health Minister Tyler Shandro said Stage 3 would return Alberta to a “free and open province.” He said that “life would in most ways go back to normal,” when July 1 comes and people will once again be allowed to have indoor gatherings.

“But COVID is still here,” he said, and cautioned that people will still have to isolate if they get the virus in order to allow for contact tracing.

“We still have to manage COVID,” he explained, even though it is transitioning from a pandemic to an epidemic situation. This means the virus will need to be controlled like other viruses circulating.

And “masks may still be required in certain

settings,” he said. But he called the “key control” for keeping the virus down that of obtaining a second dose of vaccine.

“Second doses are critical,” he said. “If you got the first dose in May you are eligible for your second dose today.” That was 11 days earlier than previously allowed, he pointed out. For those who will receive a first dose in June of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine there will only be a 28-day waiting period before being able to get the second one.

But that doesn’t apply to the AstraZeneca vaccine as those receiving their first shot of this vaccine must wait eight weeks to get their second shot.

For those with a first shot of AstraZeneca, they can now get the Pfizer or Moderna for a second shot, said Shandro calling these two vaccines interchangeable.

There are 1.1 million people eligible as of last Friday for their second dose, but Shandro didn’t want to leave out those who have yet to get their first dose. “It’s still okay to get it,” he said, calling the process simple. Then, “If it’s more than four weeks, you can get the second dose.”

province would “keep an eye” on the Delta virus and other variants of concern, and caused talk of the Delta virus causing a fourth wave in the fall “fear mongering.”

“There will be more variants,” but he expected that “the vaccines will adjust to the variants,” in future, he said.

But he acknowledged that even people with two doses of vaccine can still catch the virus.

“It’s not 100 per cent effective.” About two per cent will still get sick, and some will pass away, he said, with older people with comorbidities mostly at risk.

He expected some more localized outbreaks to occur in the fall, but said that by then 70 per cent of the population will have both doses of their vaccine.

“So COVID is still here,” he said, although the plans put in place for summer were based on assessments by the public health office and his COVID team.

“This is not a guess,” he said, repeating: “This is open for good, not just the summer.”

Lake Olivia Cemetery salutes outgoing long-time executive members

Lake Olivia cemetery was formed in 1921. It has been maintained by area residents ever since.

For years the Quinte WI looked after organizing a cleanup day every year, compete with a full course dinner. In the 1980’s Aaron Crouse would mow and Dawn Hodgins would weed eat. Then Sonny and Margaret Greenwood took over the mowing and edging of graves. He continued until he retired from his lawn maintenance work and we hired the local Harray family to mow.

The cemetery is in a scenic setting and has always been kept very neat and tidy, with local farmers trimming trees, straightening headstones, spraying weeds and, yes, one year Dawn got rid of all the moles that were digging all over the area.

We are a registered charity and with this are able to write out charitable receipts for donations given. As we belong under the county we receive a grant each year to assist with maintenance and this goes a long way with paying on that.

We have 120 burials and/or cremations at the cemetery. Years ago, we placed a cement stringer for cremation urns from a donation that we received from the Richardson family. The first person buried at the cemetery was Lily Conger in 1921 because this was the only cemetery open in the area at that time. Lily was from

Kinsella.

Families that have actively supported Lake Olivia: Garvie, Crouse, MacKey, Westbrook, Arnett, Heslop, Newby, Hodgins, Draper, McNall, Brickman, Harray, Evans, Beaumont, Greenwood, Piwowar, Cormack and many others.

The last executive decided to retire. On June 19 a re-organizational meeting was held with 14 area residents attending.

President Warren Hodgins (1993), secretary Dawn Hodgins (1981), treasurer Margaret Greenwood (1981), directors Bruce Harray, Bob Cormack and Irving Beaumont (1998) retired. This is a lot of years of volunteering, but I am sure that we would all do it all over again, if possible.

Newly elected executive: President Bart Hodgins, secretary Justin Piwowar, treasurer Tracy Beaumont, and directors Greg Beaumont, Brandon Beaumont and Warren Hodgins. As you can see the traditions of our neighbourhood volunteers carries on through the area families. We thank these young people for filling our shoes!

We thank Doug, Connie Harray and family for keeping the cemetery looking so great!

Thanks to the new executive for taking on the job. Hopefully you will be able to retire from your positions a bit sooner than the old group did!

and visit this serene little cemetery. You will be quite impressed. It is located off 619 east of Viking to Range Road 120, about one mile south to 474, and east, and you will find it in the beautiful trees.

Council looks to fill interim CAO position

With Beaver County’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Bob Beck going on sick leave until September 30, the county decided at its county council meeting June 16 to hire an interim CAO. Reeve Jim Kallal wrote the following statement June 22 on the CAO issue: “On June 15, CAO Beck informed me that he would be off on medical leave until Sept.

30. It was the majority of Council that felt an interim CAO should be sought.

Yesterday we reviewed two applications for the interim position and could not resolve with a unanimous vote. I have called another special meeting for this coming Friday.

“CAO Beck’s health issues are unknown and protected under the privacy act and free-

dom of information. We are now coming up on municipal elections and these next few months are going to put extra pressure on our administration and the unknown future of a CAO is concerning to all of Council.”

A discussion took place during a closed session of council on June 16. Afterwards council formally agreed to hire an interim CAO until September 30 based on a motion by Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec.

That motion was passed with Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2), Hrabec (Division 3) and Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) in favour; opposed were Councillors Kevin Smook (Division 1) and Barry Bruce (Division 4).

Council met June 21 in a special closed session to discuss hiring one of two applicants.

Hrabec made a motion to hire

an applicant which passed 3-2 but was not unanimous.

Bruce and Smook both gave reasons at the June 16 meeting as to why they opposed the hiring of an outside interim CAO. At that meeting, Bruce favoured Assistant CAO Margaret Jones taking over the CAO’s role for the interim period.

“Margaret is the Assistant CAO,” he said. “She has full knowledge of the issues in our county and has the ability to step in and take over, which is part of her job description.

“If we bring in an interim (from the outside) we will have to pay extra,” he said, noting “finances in the county are very tight and the ratepayers wouldn’t like it.”

Smook said the initial hiring motion on June 16 “lacks meat” as the cost wasn’t spelled out, the person wasn’t named and

there were no parametres set out for hiring guidelines.

“We are blessed in Beaver County to have a quality assistant CAO who has been with us for many, many years,” he said, “and has perfectly compatible knowledge to help out during this period of time.”

Hrabec answered these objections by stating that “the intent is also to have a fresh set of eyes,” that can look at the county’s internal operations for council.

Kallal said the need for an interim CAO was more of a “time issue.” The county “is running into an election (in October),” he said, and Jones also acts as the returning officer for these municipal elections, which this year will include the addition of a referendum and school elections.

Pederson agreed, stating he didn’t want to put undue pres-

sure on the assistant CAO, stating she has “other duties.”

During the hour long plus initial closed session June 16, one applicant met with council to discuss the interim position.

“There’s lots of unanswered questions,” said Smook in public session, stating the public deserved to know the parametres of the position, who was being hired, and how much it is going to cost the taxpayer.

When the county met again on June 21, council held a special closed session meeting before passing the motion in a split vote offering the position to a candidate at a cost of $5,000 per week.

However, council will hold yet another special meeting on Friday, June 25, to further discuss the issue, with Kallal offering the explanation that the previous motion was not unanimous so needed to be revisited.

Weight restriction goes back on RR124, council replaces oil/cold mix with gravel Patricia Harcourt After meeting with two residents who live on R.R. 124 on June 2, Beaver County Council put back the 75 per cent weight restriction on the road.

The road lies in Division 5, and councillor for the area Dale Pederson said he spoke to Muriel and Dave Hill who are objecting to changes proposed regarding the road, fearing the road’s deterioration.

Pederson told council he believes the couple understands that the county’s public works is not going to tear up the road, “and the county will try to keep dust control up.”

Also, the road is going into the five year road plan, although “a little more time” was needed to deal with the issue since the road plan isn’t being addressed again until the fall.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) asked if administration had followed up and looked at the road agreement referred to by Muriel Hill at the last meeting. If an oil contractor was making short cuts to get to a destination faster that could mean the company is “going against the agreement,” he said.

“If so, I would be in favour,” he said, of the county’s proposal.

Director of Transportation Dan Blackie said he was “out of the loop” because he missed the previous meeting when the Hills were present. He asked if the road ban was now going to be lifted because “I know the road will deteriorate and instead of adding oil we would add gravel.”

To that, Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1) said that

other municipalities have truck routes telling trucks where they have to travel, “otherwise they get a ticket.”

“Absolutely there is, there are designated truck routes in other municipalities,” replied Blacklie, noting that “the logical way is to go south on the 490 and cut across to the (Hwy.) 36….That would be my designated truck route if we had one in the county.”

Hrabec suggested keeping the 75 per cent road ban on until the 124 is covered in the road plan. “I would be okay to putting the bans back on until we have a chance to review it.”

Pederson made a motion to put the ban back on from Twp. Rd. 490-492 on R.R. 124 until next spring and let the council then deal with the matter.

But Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) wanted to go with

the county recommendation two weeks previously to lift the ban on the road. “We can’t check every road,” he said.

“When we get a recommendation from county staff,” he said, council should consider it seriously. “I have to respect that that’s their job and they are giving their best advice.”

He asked “what message this sends to residents,” adding: “It looks like we’re sitting here flipping coins…It looks like we’re running around chasing our tails.

“I think it’s the wrong way to go,” he said.

But Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) said that public works “doesn’t have a crystal ball,” noting that in the spring the county didn’t know how much frost was in the ground.

“We had extreme conditions this spring…We did not know

when the frost was coming out and when the rain would fall.”

Pederson’s motion to reinstate the 75 per cent ban on the R.R. 124 passed 3-2 with Smook and Bruce opposing it.

Another motion by Pederson was carried unanimously, and read: That any repairs required for the oil surface on R.R. 124 be done from Twp. Rd. 490-492 using gravel instead of cold mix or oiled surface. Pederson said this would “buy some time and cut some costs” for the county.

Before the vote, Smook asked Blackie for his opinion regarding the use of gravel over oil or cold mix.

Blackie said he “agrees that when you start getting some holes (in the road) you can put in gravel instead of cold mix,” adding it “won’t make no difference to us.”

Three rail crossings to be upgraded to enable whistle cessation Patricia Harcourt Beaver County has agreed to do upgrades to three railway crossings earmarked for whistle cessation in order to enable that to happen.

County Council passed a motion June 16 agreeing to fund the necessary improvements to enable train whistle cessation at the following crossings: •Mile 196.7 Bruce Main Street, in the amount of $26,384.

•Mile 197.16 SH 857, in the amount of $17,984.

•Mile 232.39 SH 630 (Lindbrook) in the amount of $20,295.

As well, council would withdraw the whistle cessation request for Mile 205.14 RR 161. Council also passed a motion that the county will support a letter regarding the CN merger with KCS Rail.

The county will not make improvements to R.R. 161 location due to the cost of over $500,000. This means that particular crossing will be withdrawn as a request for whistle cessation.

Division 4 Councillor Barry Bruce stated he was “certainly in favour of stopping the racket from those (train) whistles,” adding he “never ceases to be amazed at the uncitizenlike behaviour of CN (Rail).” He noted that people who live along the railway line in the county have no choice but to endure the whistles because as farmers they can’t move away from the noise.

“I don’t like one little bit the price tag they put on peace and quiet,” said Bruce, “so I would be in favour of this.” Bruce wanted to poll the residents of Bruce concerning closing the crossing which sits on the middle entrance way into the hamlet.

“It’s a way to save $17,000,” he said, to not keep that entrance open, noting there would still be road access on both the east and west sides of the hamlet.

As for signing a letter of support, Bruce

said he “doesn’t believe in patting the back of multinational corporations,” adding: “I haven’t got the stomach for it.”

Division 1 Councillor Kevin Smook noted that there are municipalities who get their train whistles stopped “without paying a dime,” and mentioned the Town of Viking.

“I don’t know what the difference is,” he said, but asked if these improvements are done the whistle cessation would be guaranteed.

“We’ve been working on this for over three years,” he said, calling it “a great game of tennis.” He agreed the county can’t afford the crossing that costs $1/2 million, and had no opinion on the letter.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) said he was in favour of doing the improvements at the Bruce crossing. “It’s good for the residents of Bruce,” he said.

“Let’s make the problem go away,” he said, saying the intersection should be kept open at Bruce for the benefit of the businesses there.

He also thought that “the relationship with CN has gotten considerably better…

I’ve been very impressed with what they’ve done over the past few years.

“Our council’s done a good job at keeping CN on the straight and narrow,” Hrabec added. “The working relationship is good but could be better.”

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) stated it clearly: “We’re not happy with the train whistles,” but supported the letter backing CN with its merger. Kallal called the bells and whistles used as safety measures at rail crossings “antiquated.”

“It’s still safety,” he said, adding: “These are modern times and there should be newer technology (for that).”

Train conductors should be able to do what the policy demands regarding whistles but “they don’t have to lean on the horn.”

As part of Beaver County’s roadside maintenance program, the removal of trees, brush, and regulated weed species within Beaver County road allowances will be running from May through October 2021.

• Spot herbicide applications will be conducted within all divisions to control tree and brush regrowth within County road allowances.

• Blanket Spraying will be conducted within Division 5.

• Mechanical roadside brush control efforts will be focused within Divisions 3 and 4 (Holden and Bruce areas). The mechanical removal and clearing of trees from County road allowances is targeted at improving traffic safety and machinery movement, eliminating areas prone to the trapping in the winter months and improving sight lines at intersections and yard sites.

• Roadside mowing operations will commence in late June/early July, depending on growing conditions. Roadside mowing will be conducted on all County roads west of Secondary Highway 834, and hard-surfaced roads east of Secondary Highway 834.

• For information regarding weed control, brush control, and haying along provincial primary and secondary highways please contact Alberta Transportation at 310-0000.

Township Road 512 Construction Update Over the next few weeks, Township Road 512 from Range Road 191 to 195, will be upgraded from an oiled surface to an all-weather hard surfaced road. This involves stabilizing the road base with soil cement before applying two coats of “chip seal”. While this process is much different from the process to pave a road with asphalt, the end result will seem similar to residents and the travelling public resulting in a road that is not dusty when it is dry, nor muddy when it is wet.

During this construction phase, portions of the road may be closed to allow crews to work safely please use another route, detours will be posted or be cautious when you need to drive through construction zones (local traffic only). Beaver County's goal is to provide a healthy, injury free work environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and general public. Already this year we have had people exceeding the posted speed limit through our construction zones, endangering staff, contractors and the public.

There are potential hazards to the public and vehicles during the construction process. This can include heavy machinery, dust or mud, road material such as gravel, asphalt coatings and rock chips.

We apologize for the inconvenience that road maintenance and upgrading causes, but the same roads that receive the most traffic also need the most maintenance. Currently we are experiencing delays due to poor weather and vandalism to our equipment. Thank-you for your patience and understanding during construction. Viking Royal Purple update COVID-19 has certainly played havoc with groups wanting to continue to meet. Restrictions have made it about impossible to get together. This discourages many from continuing to be part of their particular group.

But Royal Purple has survived and grown! With special permission we held our monthly meeting in March and were able to bring in three new members to our group. We initiated Jamie Hodgins, Angela Mackney and Holly Perley. We welcome these new members and trust that they all will enjoy being members of Royal Purple.

Our membership is aging and if we are going to survive as a progressive group in Viking we really need to keep recruiting young and enthusiastic members Each year we support 15 or more local and provincial groups where kids are involved. At our June meeting we welcomed another new member.

Bridget Niemand was initiated into Viking Royal Purple. The best part was that Jamie, Holly and Angela were all part of this ceremony. Welcome

Our group received $10,000 from the Child estate. No plans yet as to how we will remember Lois and Ralph in Viking – perhaps benches or some other item or project that will be useful and visible in town.

Reporting to the CAO, and Financial Manager, the Coordinator takes a lead role in coordinating physical water utility operation activities for the Commission, providing relevant advice to the CAO and staff on issues requiring complex analysis. Supporting the team through operational issues always working toward successful outcomes. As part of the Water Utility Operations management team, the coordinator is responsible for coordinating all physical work, and keeping and maintaining all records of physical work and operations conducted by the commission.

The Commission operates approximately 300 km of transmission and distribution water pipelines which provides treated water service to 3 counties, 2 towns, 2 villages and 4 hamlets as well as operating 6 bulk water truck fills. The Commission owns and operates some of the municipal distribution systems.

We are a tight-knit group dedicating our service to the customers of the commission to ensure they receive the highest quality potable water available to them at a sustainable price. We are looking for someone that has consistent high values that fits our small organization in this rural community. June Lorraine Kiewitz KIEWITZ – June. Born in Viking, Alberta, to parents Egil and Ida (nee Hoines) Berge, June passed away peacefully in Port Coquitlam, BC, on June 15, 2021.

Predeceased by her husband, Robert in 2010.

She will be missed by her children Karen (John), Ken (Justine), Kristin, Kirk (Tami); her grandchildren, Tara,

Lindsay, Kaden, Cody, Sebastian, and Annelise; sister Shirley; and numerous family and friends around the world.

June liked gardening,

spinning, weaving, and painting, and she enjoyed life on Okanagan Lake and spending her time with her family and friends.

A celebration of life

Donna Enger of Edmonton passed away at the age of 83. She is survived by her husband Arnold, who grew up in Irma, and their children and grandchildren.

Our sympathy to the Boomhower family after the death of Martin at the age of 56. Martin attended Irma School for a few years when the family lived here.

Tim and Jessica Younker are spending the summer at the farm.

Report from Kinsella Cemetery Board The Kinsella Cemetery Board would like to announce the purchase and placement of a free-standing, 24 niche Columbarium, located in the cemetery.

It is constructed from high quality granite. It

provides a place for family and friends to pay their respects for a lost loved one, very similar to visiting a grave.

Columbarium Niches are the receptacles within a Columbarium, which are for containing the ashes after someone

has been cremated.

The ashes are typically in an urn or other container, which is placed into the niche and then sealed. Each niche consists of a granite door and lockable aluminum door.

The size of the niches

are 12 inches by 12 inches, which is large enough for 1 or 2 urns.

It is a really good option and we encourage people to take a look. It is going to be a nice resting place for loved ones.
