Playing in the mud isnʼt just for boys, as the female drivers nearly outnumbered the males over the weekend at the Forestburg Mug Bog opening event.

Organizers capped the event to 30 trucks as the June 19 and 20 weekend event served as the test run for the groupʼs new pretzel track, developed last fall.

Lougheed Ag Society says Fair is a go Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Lougheed Ag Society announced recently that they will be holding the 88th annual Fair on Aug. 7.

With the province moving into Stage 3 on July 1, and the normal Fair date a month away, organizers thought they would still have time to pull it off this year.

Fair organizer Iris Williams says, “We are looking forward to getting back to enjoying all that our communities have to offer!”

The Ag Society is looking to partner with any groups looking to partner or add an event, and for individuals to volunteer for the day.

Last year the village celebrated a down-sized version of the event, with a parade, Main Street car show, and a celebration of the

Lougheed Ag. Society’s 100th birthday.

The annual fair has only been cancelled four times in the past 92 years, twice during WWI and WWII, once when the fair passed from Goose Greek Ag. Society to Lougheed Ag. Society, and last year during the pandemic.

Organizers hope to get the bench fair books out as soon as possible.

Construction to start soon on roof repairs PRAYER GATHERING Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Town of Sedgewick CAO Jim Fedyk says that roof repairs on the Wild Rose Co-op Rec Centre will be starting at the beginning of July once material arrives on site, to be completed by the end of August.

Council also awarded the Arena HVAC project to Dee-Jay Plumbing and Heating at their May meeting, with a bid of $361,050. This work is over and above the repairs to the roof, and has been included in the

project budget to date.

Main roof repairs will be done by Premier Flood and Restoration.

Fedyk says they are the same general contractor who did the temporary repairs. Both bids together came in at around $1.34 million, just over the budget. “There will probably be some extra costs along the way for unforeseen stuff, but we’re definitely trying to keep it under $1.5 million,” says Fedyk.

The Town’s application for an energy rebate for the implementation of energy efficient lighting at

the Rec Centre has been pre-approved, and is expected to cover three-quarters of the cost of the retrofit.

The project will see the replacement of T12 and T8 light fixtures throughout the facility to new TLED fixtures, resulting in less future maintenance, longer life spans, and lower operating/ electricity costs.

The total cost of the project is approximately $58,320. The net cost, around $14,580, will come from Recreation Operating reserves.

Howdy my fellow Killamites!

Summer Solstice has come and gone. The longest day of the year has happened, and now we approach shorter and shorter days as winter approaches. Which is alarmingly fast, as we are somehow already almost in July.

Everything is opening up as of July 1. I know I’ll be wearing my mask at least until I am fully vaccinated (second shot booked Friday). Can never be too careful. Plus we’ve been wearing masks this long, what is a little longer?

I am excited to see the summer activities making a comeback! Rodeos, fairs, parades, the whole shebang. I’ve missed doing rodeo photography for the paper and look forward to jumping right into four rodeos in a two week span at the end of July!

Our decorative poly pom poms are back and we have different colours in stock as well as metallic skirting. It’s first come, first serve so give our Killam CP office a call 780385-6693 or stop by Monday to Friday.

CAMROSE MLA JACKIE LOVELY Report from the Legislature Busy spring session winding down The countdown is on! I am so excited by the recent announcement by Premier Jason Kenney and Health Minister Tyler Shandro. In case you didn’t hear the news, we will move into stage three of our re-opening plan on Canada Day. That means virtually all public health restrictions will be lifted. We can gather with our friends, eat at our favourite restaurants, and live our lives as we choose. I want to thank you all in the Camrose constituency for doing your part to bring us to this exciting point.

I wanted to share some questions my office has received regarding inter-provincial travel as well as those seeking proof of vaccination. In terms of Saskatchewan, that province will drop most restrictions on July 11.

For British Columbia, at the time of writing this article, our neighbours to the west are in stage two of their re-opening plan. I checked their government’s website, and it indicates that BC will be open to out-of-province visitors in stage three of its plan. If you are thinking of heading out of Alberta, be sure to check the rules in whatever province you are visiting. I was also asked about proof of vaccination because some constituents are hoping to travel out of country. The health ministry indicated to me this is a federal issue and the Federal Government is working on it.

One of the major highlights from this past session was the passing of Bill 66, the Public Health Amendment Acts. This legislation strikes the right balance between protecting the health and safety of Albertans during public health emergencies and maintaining the rights of individuals.

To summarize: These amendments modernize and strengthen the Act and allow for greater public transparency during public health emergencies.

The government repealed the Public Health Emergency Powers Amendment Act, sections of the Public Health Act, and updated existing provisions.

Removed the power of ministers to modify legislation by order; Enhanced the rights of individuals and added checks and balances on authorities; and; Modernized the act to reflect current and emerging public health challenges, such as chronic illness.

It also eliminated mandatory vaccinations. While our government encourages vaccines, we also believe that this should be the choice of Albertans.

Additionally, I had the pleasure of speaking to, and supporting Bill 72, the Preserving Canada’s Economic Prosperity Act. This bill empowers our government to restrict the flow of oil and gas into neighbouring jurisdictions in response to attempts at blocking international exports.

We do not want to use this legislation; however, Alberta will not be bullied and I think if our country is going to benefit from our oil and gas industry through equalization payments they should be supporting the industry, not trying to block or undermine it!

Some have asked what my plans are for the summer and that is a question I am thrilled to answer. As we reopen, I will continue to travel through our beautiful Camrose Constituency highlighting all the great stories, businesses and community organizations that make ours one of the best places to work and play in all of Alberta. I look forward to connecting with as many of you as possible.

The need to bring back good governance On June 10, the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics released its long-awaited report into Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Government’s WE Charity scandal. The report outlines, in detail, how Justin Trudeau and the Liberals used their connections for the financial benefit of their friends and family. The corruption of this Prime Minister and Government are reprehensible and changes to the system must be made to prevent further ethical contraventions.

In large part due to the work of Conservative members of the committee, answers were found on aspects of the WE Charity scandal that dominated headlines much of last year. The committee found WE spent thousands to produce and promote campaign-style advertising for Justin Trudeau, paid and provided travel for members of the Prime Minister’s family, and saw the lines between lobbying and the rules blurred. The result was the Government awarding the organization a half-billion-dollar sole source government contract with limited accountability.

Not only was this a massive abuse of tax dollars and influence, but it also led to thousands of students being denied promised funding, something still felt by Canadian students out of work because of the pandemic. In their attempt to hide the truth from Canadians, Liberals misled the Committee, sealed documents, and used every tool at their disposal to cover up their corruption. On top of all of this, when Bill Morneau was fired for his role in the WE scandal, Justin Trudeau shut down Parliament, at a time when democracy was desperately needed, as a last-ditch effort to hide from this scandal.

Further, the report highlights how Canada’s lobbying and ethics laws need bolstering in the shadow of the WE scandal and numerous other ethical abuses that have come to light over the last six years.

Canada’s Conservatives have a plan to fight corruption in Ottawa. By creating new anti-corruption laws to fill the gaps that currently exist and by strengthening the laws currently in place. We need to ensure people who use the system for their own selfish gain are held to account. Canadians need to be able to trust their Government, and without changes, the deterioration of accountability in Ottawa will have devastating consequences at a time when trust in government is already very limited.

Parliamentary democracy provides Canadians with the representation they need to live in a fair and just society. I will always stand up for accountability, good governance, and ensure those in power who abuse the system face the consequences. Farewell to Cst. Trent Cleveland Leslie Cholowsky Editor

When newly promoted Corporal Trent Cleveland first arrived in Killam in May 2017, he didn’t know much about the Detachment, but he was certainly familiar with the area.

Cleveland grew up in Camrose, and often visited Flagstaff County where he still has relatives.

He was excited to transfer from the Wetaskiwin RCMP to Killam, he says; rural living, and policing, is his preference.

Cleveland has recently been transferred to the Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic Unit, where he will be Unit Commander. His last shift in Killam comes June 30.

He says, “With my transfer from Killam to Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic Unit, I will miss the community policing aspect and will have to try to find ways that I can get involved through traffic.

“It was a difficult decision to make, because of the people I work with and the people I serve.”

He says when he arrived at the detachment in 2017, there was no Sergeant in place, and Corporal Mike Miller from Wainwright was the temporary acting commander.

“I got to spend about a week-and-a-half with him, then I was on my own.”

Cleveland says he learned a lot from Miller during that short period, and drew on his own experience with various commanders he’d worked under, including Sgt. Wade Trottier, from his first posting at Ft. Vermilion. “I learned a little bit from

everyone I’ve worked under, and took the best parts from each.”

Cleveland filled that role from May 2017 to August 2018, when he asked to take on acting commander of the Coronation Consort Detachment for six months.

He returned to Killam after Sgt. Molinski left, in 2018, to once again resume the acting commander role until the arrival of present Sgt. Colin Thorne.

Earning the trust of his members was very important to him, and became a priority for Cleveland. Beyond that, building relationships with the community was also key, he knew, and something he set out to do as soon as he arrived.

“Being a newly promoted Corporal and immediately having to take over as the Acting Sergeant-Detachment Commander for Killam was a learning curve to say the least.”

“Flagstaff County truly is a gem to police and I have always felt the support from the citizens and communities that I have had the pleasure to serve.

“It’s been a roller coaster of a ride, with a lot of ups and downs, loops and twists, but I would ride it again.

“The support from the communities, the citizens, other agencies, and the detachment made that transition smooth and successful.

“We’ve been so lucky with the people we’ve worked with, and the ideas that we’ve been involved with, like the Birthdays, our pumpkin carving contest, and our Christmas Card contest.”

Cleveland is grateful for

the support.

“Special thanks to all of the elected officials throughout Flagstaff County, including Amisk, Flagstaff County Protective Services Coordinator Kim Cannady, FCSS Director Lynne Jenkinson, Flagstaff, Victim Services Program Manager Noreen Metz, and all the Killam Detachment Members and employees.”

He says you couldn’t ask for better support from a community than what he’s experienced in Flagstaff.

He says he’s also grateful for The Community Press for giving him a voice in the community through his bi-weekly reports.

Cleveland says he’s really enjoyed the leadership side of his job, and having had the opportunity to take on a command role.

He says he’s most proud of the work that he’s done building the Detachment up, especially in regards to its place in the community.

Personally, Cleveland says he tries hard to be friendly and approachable to the community. “It’s always been important to me to show the human side of the job.” He’s worked hard to support the members and encouraged them to get out into the community, too.

“I feel that I am leaving the Killam Detachment in a better place than when I arrived and I hope they continue to move forward with the community style of policing that I have instilled into the detachment.”

He says that for him, last summer’s surprise parade for the RCMP was definitely a moment where he felt that all the hard work

he and the Detachment members have put in has paid off.

During his time in Killam, Cleveland has received the Scott Burko Memorial Award for his Outstanding Commitment to Performance Management. He’s also very proud to have been recognized by MLA Jackie Lovely for service to the Constituency of Camrose, last fall.

He has also been recognized for his work in integrating some of the operations between the Killam and Viking Detachment, where he also served for a short time as Acting Commander.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I love the community.

“As my first known quote with The Community Press was ‘You can’t beat small town living,’ now, lets add on ‘You can’t beat rural policing.’”

Killam Mayor Ben Kellert reflects on first term in office Leslie Cholowsky Editor

When Ben Kellert decided to put his name forward in the 2017 municipal election for the Mayor of Killam, he wasn’t drawing on past experience as an elected official. He says, “I had not served on a council in any capacity; however, I have served as president of a community league in Edmonton, and over the years have served on numerous boards and committees in the communities that I have lived in.”

For Kellert, this included FFCS, the Barrhead Association for Community Living, the Chamber of Commerce, being a board member with Shepherds Care Foundation, and more.

He says, “Each one of these opportunities gave experience and understanding of some of the necessary issues that face a community.”

Kellert says he and wife Tanny were fairly new to Killam at the time. “We

were really enjoying what we were seeing and feeling here, and so I was looking for an opportunity to serve this community and to become more acquainted with the people and the area,” when he decided to run for office.

He didn’t have any major goals or issues before coming on Council, he says, “My desire was to be able to step in, pitch in, and do whatever possible to carry on the great story that this community has been writing for so many years.”

He adds, “I wanted to be able to honour the past, dream for the future, and to continue to see this community reach its potential; to see it continue its legacy of ‘Living Life Without Compromise.’”

Kellert says that the first six months after the election were a time of “information overload.”

He says he’s grateful for the orientation for new councillors provided by the Alberta Association of Urban Municipalities, but also for the tutoring

He commends the Killam administrative team for both keeping everyone safe, “and also assuring that we continue to move forward in our pursuit of excellence and growth.”

Cheugy: (Chew-gee) A catch-all word to describe anything that is basic, uncool, or untrendy. According to The New York Times, "cheugy can be used, broadly, to describe someone who is out of date or trying too hard."

SKSKSKSKSKSK Oddly enough, not slang for Saskatchewan. This is a way of expressing excitement about something. The idea is that the speaker is so hyped up that they can barely manage words — just snake-like hissing.

Enjoying the moment is now so rare that it makes you the subject of worldwide commentary. Take it from someone who lives on the other side of the camera at most Flagstaff County community events - Put down your phone!

As writer Nick Kossovan says: “More and more people choose to scroll mindlessly through their social media feeds regardless of whether they’re commuting on public transit, having dinner in a restaurant, or at a sports event.

39 years later, man connects with former Forestburg Pool Manager who saved him from drowning Leslie Cholowsky Editor

On a Sunday afternoon in late May, 1982, Forestburg Pool Manager Betty Eskdale saved the life of six-year-old Lee Hethershaw, who had apparently jumped in the middle of the pool intending to walk to the shallow end, with dire consequences.

Nearly 40 years later, Eskdale received a message from Hethershaw, who wanted to convey his thanks for her actions.

As it turned out, life came full circle for Hethershaw in 2015, when he and two other men saved a woman whose vehicle had gone into Cameron Lake in BC. Eskdale said when she moved to Forestburg with her family, she decided that swimming would be a good activity for her children, despite her own life-long fear of water brought on by a mischievous cousin and a lake swim.

Eskdale enrolled in beginner swimming lessons, with all the young children, and then continued her learning with adult evening classes.

Her first year ended with her Red Cross Red level, by the following year, she had reached Bronze level. Eskdale says that when Killam Pool Manager June Gair came out to test her, she asked why Eskdale was doing this. “I replied, because I like a challenge,” she says, “and then June challenged me to come work for her in Killam.”

Thus started her lifeguard and swimming instructor work, but the drive back and forth started to wear on her, so when the Pool Manager position came

up in Forestburg, she jumped on the opportunity.

She well remembers the day in question. It was the first day the pool was open in 1982, and she’d spent the morning on some refresher life saving classes in Killam. She returned to Forestburg, and was just hanging up a “what to do in an emergency” poster she’d made when a youngster ran into the office yelling, “Air, air, we need air.”

Eskdale ran out to the pool deck, where her lifeguard, Kathy, was kneeling over the prone body of Hethershaw.

She couldn’t get air into him.

Eskdale says her training took over, “I turned him on his side and gave him a blow on the back, and water came pouring out of his mouth.”

She says she remembers having to do that four times in all, but she was still having trouble getting air into the young boy’s lungs.

Eskdale says, “The whole time this was happening, I couldn’t believe it.

This young boy couldn’t be in such trouble; the sun was shining, it was beautiful day. I thought, ‘This can’t be happening!’

“So I was talking to him the whole time. I remember saying, ‘I don’t even know your name!’”

She says at that point, his life was in the balance, as his larynx relaxed in what she feared was the ‘death rattle’ she heard a faint “Lee.” By then, Dr. Kumar and the ambulance had arrived, and Dr. Kumar had her listen to his heartbeat as it struggled to regain a rhythm. “He was blue with cold and lack of oxygen, so we wrapped him up in towels.”

Eskdale said that Hethershaw spent the next five days in hospital, then made a full recovery. “I was so thankful, we’d learned that very few people can actually be revived.”

Eskdale said the boy’s family thanked her profusely at the time.

Eventually both families moved away from the area. Eskdale now resides in Regina, where she works at the RCMP Depot, with new cadets. She says Hethershaw’s family moved to England.

Just a few weeks ago, Eskdale got a message on Facebook, out of the blue.

“Hi Betty. How are you? I am back living in Canada now with my wife and two daughters. Did you used to be a lifeguard in Forestburg?”

She responded, “Yes, I was Lee, how nice to hear from you...”

“OMG, are you the lady who saved my life from drowning?”

“Yes, biggest moment of my life. You were so tiny and brave!”

Hethershaw expressed his deepest gratitude to Betty for her actions that day.

Eskdale posted later, “I told my daughters about your message, and Michelle, who was 13 at the time, wrote, ‘I remember that day so clearly and how incredibly impactful it was on you.

Always proud of you.”

That day is also when Eskdale found out from Hethershaw about his own experience in saving a life.

An account of Hethershaw’s experience appeared in a Nanaimo newspaper in 2015.

That day, he was travelling on the Alberni Highway with his wife, and a cousin and the cousin’s girlfriend, when

the vehicle in front of them veered off the road right into Cameron Lake.

The two men jumped out of the car, and flagged down passing motorists to help, then the two of them and one other man made their way to the car, which was by then sinking to the bottom, five metres below.

The three got in the water and stood atop the car, telling the driver to take off her seatbelt, roll down her window, and above all, to ‘stay calm.’

As the vehicle sunk deeper into the lake, she got the window rolled down, but her seatbelt was stuck.

The three men dove down multiple times and the woman was finally able to free herself and rise to the surface, still conscious.

Hethershaw said afterwards in the article, reflecting on his own past, “So now I’ve come full circle.”

Eskdale’s daughter repeated that sentiment. “Isn’t it amazing that he also saved someone. If you think in terms of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ the accident victim would not have been saved had you had not saved her saviour. Life is complex and amazing.”

Eskdale, now in her 70’s, stays active, and has also developed a talent for writing. She plans to share her story, and her message is this: “At work the other day, a “First Responder” and I were talking about knowing CPR and First Aid. “Many people take these courses and don’t end up using the training. I firmly believe that everyone who is over the age of 14 and maybe even some younger, should have whatever rescue training they can manage; you never know when it will be needed.”

Forestburg Mud Bog tests new track in driver-only event

The Forestburg Mud Bog held a soft opening of their new track over Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20, inviting drivers but no spectators. Around 30 drivers showed up, ready to get down and dirty in the mud.

Event organizer, Doug Brown, says the new track, that’s being called a “pretzel” track, was based on an idea he found on social media that originated in Australia.

The new track is located south of the traditional pits, closer to the eighth-mile track, so both events can share stands and some of the fixed amenities.

Brown says that McNabb Construction in Forestburg donated the time and equipment to build

the new track last fall.

Friday evening’s rain was welcome, as it reduced the amount of water needed on the track Saturday.

Saturday and Sunday consisted of straight line racing, as well as on the new pretzel track.

“The new track was enjoyed by all the drivers.” As with anything new, Brown says there are a few things that need some adjustment.

With pandemic restrictions lifting July 1, Brown says there’s a possibility that a second event, open to drivers and spectators, might be held this summer, if they can work it out.

The weekend saw many willing to give the new track a try, and nearly as many women competitors as men, proving the urge to play in mud puddles is universal.

Hello folks, I hope you all enjoyed your Father's Day celebrations. There were a multitude of pictures and stories on social media, which are always so enjoyable to view.

The last few weeks have been rather sad in Hardisty because we have lost three of our beloved citizens. Hardisty sends condolences to their families and friends.

Rosie Sheen bid farewell to her partner Ron MacGillivray. Ron was a long time resident at the Hardisty Long Term Care wing at the Hospital.

Rosie faithfully visited her man and always brought along their furry baby "Peanut" for Ron to cuddle. Now Rosie is grateful that she has that little dog to comfort her, too. Rest in peace Ron. Rosie Sheen and sister Dorothy Hayes said farewell to their dear sister Sandy Gaetzman. Sandy was the beloved wife of former town councillor Roger Gaetzman. She passed on June 14.

Many of us remember Sandy when she was the long-time manager of the Hardisty Hospital kitchen.

She was an excellent cook, always had a smile on her face, and was full of pranks. Hospital staff loved working with her.

She was also a talented artist. There is a huge painting in the hospital kitchen that she painted along with artistic assistance from Vicky Cullum (medical records), Cindy Gramlich (nursing), and her mother-in-law Jenny Gramlich (teacher). The frame was engineered by our maintenance man Lorne Hampson. Rest in peace dear Sandy.

On June 11, Hardisty lost Leroy Lee "Rocky" Hendricks at 86 years old.

Lee was the husband of Lorna Hendricks and father to Rick, Jeff, and Jamie.

I had a chat with Jamie and she informed me that her father was a talented hockey player in his youth. In 1954 he started

pipelining with Bill Whitelock at age 19. In later years he became involved in Cowboy ministry augmented by his and wife Lorna's love for music.

Jamie said that her Dad was laid to rest in the "cowboy way." He would have loved the simple, yet deeply touching ceremony with his family at his side.

She said he was always such a humble man. Rest in peace dear Lee. I found a touching poem written by Eva Cookson (Rob Cookson's mother). It was published in a book I found at the library named Crocuses and Buffalo Beans. I contacted Sharleen Chevraux to see if I could use it, since she was a member of the now-defunct Flagstaff Creative Writers. She said as long as I name the author she felt it was allowable. So here it is, in memory of Ron, Sandy, and Lee. NORTHERN LIGHTS Last night I sat by my window, With all the lights turned low, Watching the "Spirit Dancers," As they hurried to and fro.

I wondered as I watched

them, Pulsing green and rose and blue, If some of the ancient legends Might possibly be true.

COVID-19 has certainly made it even more difficult when it comes to saying farewell to our loved ones. Not everyone is willing to have a larger funeral. But many folks feel it is important because it gives friends, family, and acquaintances an ability to express their feelings, join in fellowship, and share food. After it is all over the

family has the guest book, cards, and face-to-face interactions to help them heal.

Small towns are amazing because you always get a kind word at the grocery store, a few friends exchange kind memories with you at the post office, and an old friend invites you to get a coffee and go for a walk around the lake.

In Hardisty you are never totally alone. We may not have all the amenities, but Hardisty has compassion and kind folks.

Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society now incorporated Leslie Cholowsky Editor

With all Flagstaff municipal Councils accepting an agreement to move forward in creating a formal Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society, that group was able to take the first steps forward at the group’s first meeting, held June 15.

With members from all communities present, the Society elected Lougheed Mayor Debra Smith as President of the new society, with Flagstaff County councillor Erik Skoberg accepting a nomination for vice-chair.

Killam Councillor Brenda Grove was elected Secretary.

The Society was incorporated as a not-for-profit society in early June, with directors appointed from each municipality. These directors are: Brett Baumgartner, Hardisty; Dwayne Giroux, Forestburg; Deb Smith, Lougheed; Brandon Martz, Heisler; Brenda Grove, Killam; Grant Imlah, Sedgewick; Leslie Ganshirt, Alliance; Alan McLeod, Daysland; Erik Skoberg, Flagstaff County, and Don Kroetch, Flagstaff County.

The Society members determined that the future Regional Emergency Services Manager would act as Treasurer.

After going into a closed session, the Society moved to offer a

contract to Derek Homme for the position of Regional Emergency Services Manager.

The Society said in an official release last week: “Mr. Homme possesses 25-plus years of progressive business management leadership experience in the private industry emergency services sector combined with 15 years experience as a volunteer firefighter.”

Homme will officially start his new position on July 5.

The Society also voted to accept a proposal from Flagstaff County to provide support services to the Society during the transition period, providing an office to Homme during the tran-

sition period.

President Debra Smith said, “This is a proud moment for the Flagstaff region. It is the result of years of commitment and contribution by a number of people including elected officials, CAOs, and Fire Chiefs.”

Work continues on a Master Agreement, which will determine final budgets, equipment, training, personnel, and other key points in delivering fire services within Flagstaff County.

Smith added, “While this is indeed a significant milestone for the Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society and all residents of the region, there remains considerable work to be done with

all invested partners to get to the final transition stage of a regional fires services structure.”

In the background, the group has been reviewing a draft of a master agreement, draft bylaws, and fire bylaws, as well as working on a formal budget.

The group was successful in securing grant funding through the Alberta Collaboration Program earlier in 2021, through the Town of Killam, to guide the Society through final critical stages.

The idea for the development of a regional approach to fire services came from the Emergency Services Committee back in 2016, with a working committee formed in 2017.

Province of Alberta officially “Open for Summer” starting July 1 Leslie Cholowsky Editor Alberta will officially enter Stage 3 in its “Open for Summer” plan on July 1, two weeks after 70 per cent of Albertans over the age of 12 received at least once dose.

Essentially at Stage 3, all restrictions will be lifted, including the ban on indoor social gatherings.

The general indoor mask mandate will also be lifted, but some situations or settings may still require the wearing of a mask.

There are now 3.85 million Al-

bertans who have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and just over 30 per cent have been fully vaccinated.

Flagstaff County presently has just one active case of COVID-19, but is a little behind the provincial average, with just 64.7 per cent of the population aged 12 and up vaccinated with at least one dose.

Flagstaff County is ahead of the provincial average, however, when it comes to the percentage of the population, 33.1 per cent, who are fully vaccinated.

Anyone who has received at

least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is eligible to enter a provincial lottery for a draw of $1,000,000. The first stage will close at 11:59 a.m. on June 24, and the first winners will be announced when Stage 3 begins. To be eligible for the lottery, you must opt in by registering at alberta.ca/lottery. Winners must provide proof of first dose. There will be two additional draws later in the summer for those who receive a first and second dose.

Additional prizes were announced on Monday, from the

Calgary Stampede, with family packs, entertainment packs, and general admission tickets to the event available to be won. This is in addition to prizes from WestJet and Air Canada. The travel package winners will be announced Aug. 31.

Premier Jason Kenney says, “Offering Albertans the chance to win admission to one of the province’s iconic events shows we really are open for summer. I tip my hat to Stampede organizers for their hard work and determination, and to all Albertans

who are getting their vaccines to help put this pandemic behind us.”

The previous second-shot vaccination dates were lifted late last week, and now every person over age 12 is eligible to book their second dose. For those who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, a second dose is recommended four weeks after the first dose.

For those who received a first dose of AstraZeneca, you may choose a second shot or an mRNA vaccine for the second dose.

Hi everyone, how was your weekend? I hope all you fathers had a great day.

It was a beautiful day to spend outside enjoying the sunny weather, do any of

you still have any of those black poplars? Oh my, how the fuzz was flying off them! It did make it a little more uncomfortable to sit outside, but one can endure if the weather cooperates and you’re not allergic to the fuzz.

This Monday is a gorgeous day; I’m trying to find things to do outside, the gardens are starting to grow nicely, my roses are

in bloom and my peonies are just about ready to bloom. Oh the joys of spring or the first day of summer.

I have two Christmas cacti and have had them sitting in the garage. Today I noticed they are getting buds on them, I Googled it and found out there are two kinds, one is a Christmas and one is an Easter.

They are both starting to

bud. I was planning to transplant them, should I or should I wait? They say now is the time to do it, so I think I will give it a try.

They are pretty tough according to the guy on Google.

There’s one more week of school, boys and girls.

I’m sure you’re looking forward to summer holidays.

Maybe some of you older students have summer

jobs, which is nice to make some extra money. Now that COVID-19 is slowing down, maybe going on a little holiday with family and friends is possible.

The Sedgewick dog park is slowly taking shape. Some of the fence line has gone up and has us hoping it will open soon. It’s very exciting.

The Sedgewick School overhauled their flower beds.

All the old trees, plants, and weeds have been removed and new ones have been planted instead. It's looking very nice so far. Whoever took on the project, thank you.

Crews will continue working on the following shoulder pulling project this week: • West of Heisler on Range Road 163, south from Township Road 440 to Township Road 430 for 6.0 miles.

It is Father’s Day today.

I am sure that all the fathers were made to feel special today.

Besides being Father’s Day, June 21 was also National Aboriginal Day as established in 1996. It is also the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. For generations this day has carried significance for the Indigenous peoples.

In 1971 the United Church of Canada formally recognized June 21 as National Indian Day of Prayer. In 2017 the prime minister issued a name change to National Indigenous Peoples Day. I saw Lorne Goodrich at the post office on Friday. He is president of our local Legion Branch.

He was telling me how much he appreciated the work that Jerry Mandel of Battle River Steam did in removing the old fence around the cenotaph and disposing of the material.

It looks very nice. The old fence was nice in its day, but as time passes things need replacing.

Norm and Brenda Detta had the moving van at their place on Sunday. They have been selling garage sale style for a week or so and now it is time to move.

They are going to Vernon, where daughter Sandra has a place for them that is close to her.

You have been a part of our community for quite a few years.

Congratulations to Mark and Anik Kuefler upon having a new granddaughter. Ashley and Dustin Repchuk welcomed Kinsey this week.

She has a big brother.

The community was rather shocked to learn of

the passing of Beth Smith. Beth had been in the hospital and then home and back to the hospital. She passed away on Friday in Edmonton. Deepest sympathy to her husband Les and family. Beth was a big part of the Fun For All Club and the kitchen at the Farmer’s Markets.

There was a congregational meeting after church on Sunday to determine the way things will go from now on. Rev. Dianne Crewe was our minister for this service and will be in the pulpit next Sunday for the last service. Following the service on June 27 there will be a church picnic outside on the lawn. Hot dogs with all the trimmings and ice cream will be the fare for the final get together. There will be no services in July and August as per usual, but come September the first Sunday will be a hymn singing service.

The Women’s Institute (WI) branch has an email pen pal correspondence going on with the Cirencester Phoenix WI in the Cotswolds near Bourton on the Water in England. At our meeting each member wrote a little introduction to send to the English ladies. The English ladies were the ones who reached out requesting a link and friendship.

After much discussion, the Argyle Branch decided to write a letter to the Minister of Health and our MLA Jackie Lovely to request that they reopen the Galahad Health Care Centre as soon as possible.

July 1 is fast approaching. The Library Board is getting excited about our bicycle decorating, our parade, the story book walk, the old fashioned games, and the sale of ice cream that is going to take place at the Gathering Place (old school grounds).

Delores Jean Buchholz November 11, 1932 to June 13, 2021 Delores Jean was born to Anton and Ida Thalman on November 11, 1932, in Galahad, Alberta, and passed away peacefully on June 13, 2021 with her family by her side.

Delores married Alvin Buchholz on June 30,

1952, and was blessed with five children.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Keith (Dianne) Scott; Adria, Rae; Kevin (Rachel) Emma, Brooke, Quinn; Doug (Audrey), Nicholas (Sarah), Ella, Hadley, Kipton; Michael (Kirsten); Alexandra (Reid) Copeland; Brenda (Ron), Brianna

(Rick), Amelia, Bennett; Kara (Quinn); Melissa (Jeff) Sawyer; Ron (Gerri); Jackie (Aaron); Tony (Marissa); Warren, Henry; Lyle (Holly) Colton, and Kailea.

Also left to cherish her memory are her sister Doreen Buchholz and brother Bob Moro, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, and

many friends.

Delores was predeceased by her husband Alvin in May of 1977 and her sister Audrey Thompson in August of 2009. Brothers-in-law, Herb Buchholz, Clarence Buchholz, Rueben Heather, Bob Klaudt, Fred Bayer, Don Thompson; sisters-inlaw, Elvina Buchholz, Helen Buchholz, Ruby

Moro; niece Carol Hays; and nephew Wayne Bayer.

Lena Christensen

In loving memory of Anna Magdalena Christensen

Lena was born on Feb 17, 1930, in Holm, Denmark, to Wilhelm and Anna Magdalena Albrecht and passed away in the Lacombe Health Centre on June 17, 2021, at 91 years of age.

Lena grew up in the bakery that her father owned and ran. She became a journeyman baker and, later, a teacher.

When she met Ole

Christensen they managed a gas station in Copenhagen. In 1973 they saw an opportunity to move to Canada and start farming.

They owned a farm south of Strome until they retired in 1996.

Lena spent her remaining years at Big Knife Villa, Providence Place, and the Galahad Care Centre.

Lena leaves to mourn;

one son Gunnar (Anne) Albrecht; one daughterin-law Kathy Albrecht; two step-sons Peter (Dorit) de Lange, Ole (Denise) Christensen; one step-daughter Inge (Sandy) Christensen; and numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Lena was predeceased by her husband Ole and her son Mogens.

Faith: 57 pennies So often throughout my life I have been inspired and encouraged by children and young people. I am so grateful for the opportunities that I have had to work with some of the most amazing individuals who truly are our most valuable natural resource. I came across this story again recently and thought I would share with you all today because, once again, it demonstrates the incredible influence of one little child.

She was just a little girl, one of those “non-persons.” Nothing to make her stand out from other little girls. She was not from a wealthy family, in fact she was from a poor family. 57 pennies were found under her pillow the night she died and this simple act made an indelible mark on the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This little girl had made an attempt to become part of a Sunday

school in Philadelphia years ago and was told she could not come because there was no room for her. She began saving her pennies in order to “help the Sunday school have more room.”

Two years later she became sick and, in a couple of weeks, died.

Beneath her pillow they found a small, tattered book with the 57 pennies and a piece of paper on which she had printed neatly: “To help build the Little Temple Bigger, so more children can go to Sunday School.” This little story and the purse with the 57 pennies were brought to the pastor and, if I remember correctly, this was Rev. Russell H. Conwell, and he told this humble story to his congregation. Then the newspapers picked up the story and took it across the country. This triggered a spontaneous wave of gifts and giving.

Soon the pennies grew and grew and today the

final outcome of the 57 pennies can still be seen in Philadelphia.

The “Little Temple” church had been replaced by a church which seats 3,300 people with lots of room for Sunday school.

There is also a “Temple University” which accommodates and educates thousands of students. There is even a “Temple Hospital” dedicated to humanity. And it all began with a nameless little girl who set out to do something about a need. Her beautiful, unselfish, dedicated attitude is what started this incredible project.

This story reminds me that if we will do the little things that we can do; God will step in and do the incredible. Let’s do our part.

Flagstaff Community Adult Learning setting up in new digs Editor

Flagstaff Community Adult Learning (FCAL) has moved to a new location at the Chevraux Centre, on the north end of Main Street in Killam.

Nanette Jones and Lois Polege at FCAL say, “We thought we were settled,” but after enjoying the free, plentiful space at the provincially owned former courthouse building adjacent to Vision Credit Union, new provincial policies on buildings like these had them looking for new premises.

“We were lucky to have a place like Chevraux Centre to move to,” says Polege. “Other Community Adult Learning Programs facing the same issue don’t have this option.”

For the FCAL, moving to a privately owned building means they will no longer be able to afford having a person in an admin support position, redirecting those funds to new rent costs.

There are advantages to the move as well, however, as some building maintenance issues in the former location were about to become an issue.

Polege says that they received notice of the decision earlier in the year, and are of the understanding that this is an issue that all organizations working out of provincially owned buildings will soon face.

“From what we understand, this is more internal policy than a directive from the government.”

To their knowledge, 12 Community Adult Learning groups in the province have been affected by the police.

Polege says having the space for such a long period of time at no charge has allowed FCAL to develop special programming suited to Flagstaff’s needs. They, like other successful CALP organizations, have grown to offer other services and projects outside the scope of the provincially funded programming. “That free space opened up some capacity in our budget to explore new ideas and partnerships.”

Now, with rent taking a chunk out of their annual budget, and eliminating admin support, both are worried that the flexibility

they’ve always enjoyed will be curtailed to some degree.

Polege says that recent studies indicate that every dollar spent in the type of programming FCAL does represents a social return of $7 to $1, similar to many other non-profits. “That’s a lot of bang for your buck,” she says.

Both are very positive about the move, however, and looking forward to coming out of the pandemic restrictions that have affected so much of the past year and beyond.

“We’re proud to be part of an organization that makes a difference in people’s lives,” says Jones.

Both say it’s so important to have this type of agency right in Flagstaff, and they’re grateful for the support received from local municipalities and Flagstaff County. “When we are based right in the community, we serve the community better. We know what is needed, and can provide more direct benefits than if the service was being delivered through an out-of-area provider.”

Their new location is slightly smaller, but FCAL is still able to do one-onone learning and smaller groups.

Polege says she’s seeing

a shift in adult learning to long-term tutoring, so the new space is ideally suited for that.

“We’re really looking forward to being fully open for business again this fall,” both Jones and Polege say.

Archeological dig in Flagstaff County unearths items estimated to be 1,300 to 1,500 years old Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Sean Sheedy from Sedgewick had the experience of a lifetime recently when he was invited by Archeologist Trevor Peck to take part in an archeological dig taking place in Flagstaff County near Sedgewick.

Sheedy said he first met Peck, who at the time worked for the province’s Heritage division, when he emailed him about some arrowhead and tool artifacts he’d found in the region.

Around 2011, Sheedy had started looking for arrowheads, or tips, as they are called, and found his first on the first try. Since then, he’s built quite a collection of ancient tips and tools. “He was really helpful, and I learned a lot about the things I found,” said Sheedy.

“Gradually, as we emailed back and forth, it grew into a friendship.

When Peck travelled to Sedgewick and Hardisty at various “Stones and Bones” events held around the county, the two met in person.

While many are aware that there was an archeological dig near Hardisty between 2008 and 2014, the provincial museum had also conducted small test digs in other areas of Flagstaff in the ‘70s, including one site south of Sedgewick. “But at the time, there was no money to go back and do a thorough dig,” Peck says.

Peck, who moved from working at the Province to working at Circle CRM Group, says he’s now working as a consultant for any large project that may have the potential to uncover artifacts during construction.

As a consultant, he goes in first to make sure it’s not a culturally significant site that needs to be preserved.

But Peck was always aware of the Sedgewick-area site from the ‘70s, and naturally curious about what a new dig may unearth. “Luckily, the company I work for allows team members to pursue projects outside the normal scope of operations.”

He says, “Our owner, Margarita de Guzman, has brought her own sensibility about archeology to the program. It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle.”

He says the team was paid during the recent Sedgewick dig, and that’s something that the company allows them to do, financing the work even though it’s outside the scope of the firm’s normal work.

He says the Sedgewick site stuck out to him, from a report of research done in the area over the years. “We knew that the original landowner (settler) had found some items when the land was first plowed.”

Once Peck got a permit from the province, the dig was on. On Saturday, June 12, Peck and three of his colleagues, along with Sheedy, dug a test hole using the map coordinates from the ‘70s.

“They weren’t entirely accurate,” says Sheedy. The group dug a number of test holes before finding what they were looking for.

Sheedy found the only point unearthed at an archeological dig south of Sedgewick on June 12.

The tools and pieces of bones that were found, Peck says, indicate what was going on there. It was a bison processing site, estimated at around 1,300 to 1,500 years old.

The work at the site would have included skinning, and removing parts of the animal that weren’t used, while processing everything else. “Even the bones were smashed up to extract the marrow.”

Peck says that rock found on the site was an indication of this. He says it was common to fill a skin bag with water and heat it to boiling using rocks from a campfire, then chucking in the pieces of bone so that the fat and marrow could be skimmed off the top of the water. “The rocks would often crack, or even explode, and we found those types of rocks on the site, along with the bone pieces.”

They also found a few scrapers and other tools, including hundreds of sharpening flakes, where flakes of material would be removed from flint scrapers to ‘sharpen’ the edges.

Peck says he’s done work at Smashed In Buffalo Jump in southern Alberta, where thousands of Bison were processed over a long period of time, and that the soil at this Flagstaff site had a very similar feel.

“It’s almost a greasy feeling to it.”

Sheedy was lucky enough to find the only point at the site.

Peck says the site consisted of three one-metre by one-metre squares, marked out and then dug to a 20cm mark.

Sheedy said once that depth was reached, workers shifted from shovels to paintbrushes to uncover the artifacts.

Peck said due to the sheer quantity of materials found, as well as the soil quality, he’s certain that this site was used over a long period of time.

He says the majority of the tools found are made from Knife River Flint, which only comes from North and South Dakota. “These weren’t people on horseback, so either they walked a very long way, or there was a lot of trading going on for this stone to be found here.” Peck says that there are a few known similar sites in Alberta. “More digs would help us understand what was actually happening here. Why were they processing bison way up here? Were there issues with local herds near Missouri?” He thinks it indicates movement of the indigenous people of the period not just trade.

Sheedy says the really incredible part of finding points and tools, is thinking, “Who held this last?

What was life like for them?”

Peck says he hopes to return to the area, because the present landowner, who was also living on the land during that 1970s testing, said that earlier dig was at a different spot than where last week’s started.

“That leads me to believe this is a very big site,”

Peck says.

He’s grateful to the landowners for allowing the dig to happen, and for their enthusiasm during the process.

Peck says the items found during the dig have been sent away for radio-carbon dating, to determine their actual age.

Sheedy says he has some points and items that have been dated in the 10-11,000 year-old range.

There are some rules to collecting artifacts in Alberta. Generally speaking, it is against the law to conduct your own dig. These must be permitted, and usually permit holders are required to have a Masters of Archeology or equivalent experience.

Peck says during his time with the province, he helped to develop the “Report a Find” feature, because if you find an artifact laying on the surface of the ground, it is okay to pick it up. (alberta.ca/reportarchaeological-find.aspx) “Surface items have often lost their context,” says Peck. “The province is not going to come and take it away from you,” he says, but if it is unusual or significant, they would like to know about it, and where you found it.

“It helps build a picture of what’s out there, and may help identify future test or archeological dig sites.

I only see it as a positive thing.”

He adds, “People on the land are the eyes and ears of archeology.”

Peck says the Sedgewick site could be similar to the massive bison pound, dated to be around 1,000 years old, found at Hardisty, where he says there were also remains of a campsite underneath that was 7,000 years old.

Peck says it’s not unusual to dig and find nothing, so this Sedgewick area site is “really awesome. This is the best-of-the-best kind of stuff.”

Sheedy didn’t get to keep the point he found this time, but he still sets out on foot from time to time, always with landowner’s permission, to see what he can find. “About eight times out of 10, I seem to find something.”

He’s amassed quite a collection of artifacts since first stepping out in 2011.

Peck authored a book in 2011 called Light from Ancient Campfires that documents some of Alberta’s most historic archeological finds. In his introduction, he says, “People have lived in what is now southern Alberta for about the past 13,000 years.

“Archaeological evidence for Native lifeways in Alberta has been documented by ordinary citizens who find artifacts on their land, by academics conducting research at universities, and by local archaeological societies who rally to map and preserve sites.” He says there are over 35,000 identified sites in Alberta.

Keep on rolling Rolling cropland makes a lot of good sense, especially if you have pulses to seed. It pushes the rocks down and smooths the fields, making harvest easier; it can limit dirt tag on pulses and can benefit silage harvesting too! It prevents costly damage to the combine if the crop lodges. However, a few basic rules need to be followed to make sure it’s beneficial, and not causing other problems.

Ideally, you’d like to do it just after seeding. However, rolling tends to pulverize the soil surface and make it susceptible to wind erosion. If you have fine-textured soils or low organic matter, rolling can cause crusting and prevent crops from emerging. If there is sufficient stubble present and the surface is dry you can still roll right after seeding. A lot of people wait until after the crops is up.

There are a few things to watch when rolling.

Firstly, the soil surface must be dry. If it is wet, mud will stick to the roller and you’ll end up pulling plants out of the ground. It is best to roll later in the day, hopefully on a sunny, warm day.

That way the crop is slightly wilted and you won’t break the stems.

Rolling in the morning, when the stems are rigid and full of water, will damage the growing points if they are above ground.

Crop staging is impor-

tant. The crop needs to be established so it can survive the rolling, yet not so far advanced that rolling won’t permanently damage the head. For cereals, the crop should be at least at the two leaf stage and no more than the four to six leaf stage. Too early and you kill off the seedlings. However, you also have to roll it before the growing point starts moving up the stem or you kill off the main stem of the plant. Under good moisture conditions this can stimulate increased secondary shoot production and possibly improve biomass yield, but it isn’t a guarantee.

Peas should be rolled at the two to three node stage, lentils, before the seven node stage. Do not roll the crop if it is under stress. This can be from drought, heat, frost, or a recent herbicide application. Minimize double rolling. Do not use any water ballast in the rolls, but roll when empty.

Rocks will be pushed into the ground just as effectively with an empty roller as they will be with a filled roller. If you roll when plants are damp you risk crushing the growing point and possibly transmitting diseases around the field with the roller. Once rolled, leave the crop to recuperate for a few days prior to weed spraying or the multiple stresses to the plant may affect yield.
