Ruth Derow, 11, of Mundare, pours a glass of strawberry lemonade for Mundare Mayor Cheryl Calinoiu during the town’s Lemonade Day June 18. While rain threw a decided damper on sales, Ruth said many people were stopping by just to give tips or donations to her sponsor SOS Ministries. There was only a single stand in Mundare, but it was coupled with some others that were held in Vegreville.

Mitchell receives 70-year service medal – a first in Canada

BY JOHN MATHER
Accolades keep on coming for Lamont Deputy Fire Chief Bob Mitchell.
In a quiet ceremony outside Lamont Hospital June 15, Mitchell was honoured for his 70 years of volunteer service to the Lamont Fire Department.
To mark the occasion, he was presented with a 70-year service award, the first of its kind ever presented in Canada.
“It’s a gold medal,” said Brian Starkell, National President of the Volunteer Firefighters of Canada. Starkell drove to Lamont from Nipawin, Saskatchewan to make the presentation.
“After 50 years, the silver medal and all its chevrons turn to gold.”
The medal is to be worn on the formal uniform, but there were also two pins presented which would be worn with station wear.
“Chief thank you very much for your years of service,” Starkell said.
He pointed out Mitchell is the longest serving volunteer firefighter in Canada.
“It’s really an honour to present him with this medal and his certificate,” said Starkell.
Peter Gooch, past president of the Alberta Fire Chiefs, and part of the national advisory council of Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, also presented

Brian Starkell, National President of the Volunteer Firefighters of Canada, presents a 70-year service medal to Lamont’s Bob Mitchell, the longest serving firefighter in Canada. The ceremony, June 15, marked the first time in Canada that a 70-year medal has been struck and presented to a firefighter. Last fall, the Lamont Fire Hall was renamed after Mitchell. Mitchell with a letter of congratulations.
“Your achievements and dedication are an inspiration to us all,” Gooch read out. “Particularly to those who have reached retirement opportunities and looked into the future. You are an inspiration to us all.”
Mitchell also received a pin from the Association of Fallen Firefighters Foundation on behalf of all firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
Last fall, the Lamont Firehall was renamed after Mitchell for his years of service. He still regularly attends Tuesday evening fire practice in the town.
