Flagstaff County sees modest assessment growth Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff County Council reviewed the results of the latest assessments during their May 25 Council meeting, as presented by Accurate Assessment Group. Assessed values from 2021 over the previous year ranged from three per cent less, to 11

per cent higher, with Designated Industrial Property seeing the largest increase, and linear assessments the only decrease. Residential assessments within Flagstaff County, including hamlets, went up by six percent from 2020 to 2021, with non-residental assessment also increasing by three percent.

Farmland assessments were essentially unchanged from the previous year, while exempt properties rose by four per cent. Overall, Flagstaff County saw total assessments rise by three percent, or $50,249,080. While Designated Industrial Property assessment reached a five year high, linear assessment, which is done by the

Province, reached a five-year low in 2021. In total, 97 per cent of all tax rolls would see a difference of plus or minus 10 per cent, with nearly three-quarters seeing no change at all. There were three fewer tax rolls this year, compared to 17 new last year, and 56 development permits were issued in 2021.

Rural residential rose higher than hamlet residental in 2021, with $5.25 million growth in all residential assessment coming from new construction. Flagstaff County’s total assessment in 2021 was over $1.5 billion. Property taxes are determined by a property’s assessed value times the mill rate set by Council each year.

FIRST working on building wellness guide for area Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff’s Informed Response Sharing Team (FIRST) is working on a new project that will highlight all of the holistic wellness services available throughout the county. Holistic health and wellness is the practice of treating the whole mind, body, and spirit. FIRST Board member and FFCS Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson says the project builds on an initiative from last year where a multi-page guide of wellness professionals was advertised in the newspaper. “Now that we are out of the pandemic, people are in need of these types of services, and we were looking for a way to support these practitioners and the people who need them by connecting them. “This will provide residents of the region an outlet to find holistic services in our own communities.”

Jenkinson says the project is in the beginning stages, she’s in the process of compiling a list of services. FIRST has partnered with Shirley Damberger from HOM of Well Being in Daysland on this stage of the project. It is her hope that together they can reach as many practitioners as possible by mid-June. “The idea is to produce a booklet which we will have printed locally, supporting local business, that will also be available online. “I’ve had really great feedback from people, both on the idea, and the intended size and format for the guide.” She says the project builds on similar projects done by other groups with the intent to bring all demographics together. “It’s kind of a pie in the sky idea that the FIRST board agreed to sponsor and run with. “Especially coming out of the pandemic, we’re tak-

ing lots of hits on our mental health.” Jenkinson and Damberger will be compiling a list of known services in the region, then contacting them. “We want to take our time to build this and get it right.”
