Anyone looking west of Killam on Sunday, June 14, just before 7 p.m. might have been alarmed to see what looks like a funnel cloud hovering over the Town. Joleen Blaeser of Killam caught the rotating appendage on video. At one point during the video, above right, the cloud lengthened into a point and definite rotation could be seen in the cloud. The cloud thinned to a point, then moments later returned to its original shape without getting any closer to the ground. Many in the area caught the cloud with still photos. There were no weather warnings out for Killam at the time of the sighting.
Funnel cloud sparks multiple reports to Environment Canada
Area 53 Raceway enjoys a smokin’ weekend of racing
Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Environment Canada received multiple reports of funnel clouds in central Alberta from Sunday, June 14, including the one that surfaced over Killam at around 7 p.m. Caught on video by Joleen Blaeser in Killam, the cloud was confirmed to be a funnel cloud, but did not have any ground circulation beneath it that would indicate a tornado. Environment Canada Meteorologist Blaine Lowry made the confirmation, and provided a definition of a tornado: “A rotating column of air, extending from the base of a cumuliform cloud, and often visible as a condensation funnel in contact with the ground, and/or attendant circulating dust or debris cloud at the ground. “If the funnel cloud is visible though not reaching the ground, and there is ground circulation under the funnel cloud, then we’d have a tornado.”
AREA 53 RACEWAY PHOTO
The Area 53 Raceway in Forestburg experienced clouds of a different type on the weekend as they hosted racers from around the province on Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14, to rave reviews. With Alberta Health opening Phase two of the Province’s Relaunch plan the Friday before, the track attracted racers, pit crews, and even spectators, within the expanded guidelines, for a great weekend of eighth-mile drag racing.
