Heisler Fire Department honours three long-serving members at surprise barbeque

LESLIE CHOLOWSKY PHOTO

Heisler Fire Chief Shawn Badry and the rest of the departmentʼs members honoured former Deputy Chief Mickey Heisler, former Chief Joe Martz, and Training Officer Reid Rorem at a surprise barbeque held on Saturday, June 11, at the Heisler Fire Hall. The Heisler Fire Department members held a surprise barbeque honouring Past Chief Joe Martz, Past Deputy Chief Mickey Heisler, and Training Officer Reid Rorem, inviting fire department members

and their families to celebrate this past Saturday, June 11, at the Heisler Fire Hall. New Fire Chief Shawn Badry said he wanted to hold an event to honour the three, but says he knew that none of them were big on public recognition. “So we made it a surprise.”

He says the cat was nearly out of the bag when firefighters met to clean up the trucks and fire hall late last week in preparation for the event and were surprised by a fire call out, and the arrival of Martz, who asked them, “How are you guys here already?” Continued on Page 27

Anti-fraud presentations this week Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Recently a number of groups in Flagstaff County came together informally to talk about fraud. As more and more cases of fraud victims are reported locally, the need for widespread fraud awareness became apparent. “The sad thing is that many frauds go unreported,” says FFCS Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson. Through the network of partnerships that FFCS is known for throughout the region, a series of anti-fraud presentations are happening throughout Flagstaff County over the next week. They started in Alliance on Mon-

day, June 13, and will travel to Daysland today, Lougheed, Killam, and Forestburg (see ad in last week’s paper), with a potential to hold one in Hardisty if there is interest. The presentations will be led by Donna Coombs from Seniors First, who is also a retired policewoman, and will cover information about a number of common frauds, and how to protect yourself. For those who’ve fallen victim to a fraud, there will also be an opportunity to talk one-on-one with local professionals, and each session will feature a live question and answer period. In a day and age when every day features some form of attempted fraud, from phone calls purporting

to be from “Service Canada,” or “Amazon Customer Services,” along with dozens (or more) of fraudulent emails hoping to snag a victim, there are also frauds targetting seniors, as well as relationship frauds that victimize people of all ages. It is the hope of organizers that by learning and talking about some of the more common frauds, they will become easier to spot, and Flagstaff County residents will be harder to victimize. The presentations are free, and all are welcome. Fraud affects people of all ages. Organizers say, “Even if you think this does not affect you, it does, or will, as frauds are continually being improved.”

Summertime brings bicycle safety to forefront Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Forestburg students went through a Bike Safety Rodeo at Forestburg School on Thursday, June 9. Organized by Flagstaff County Emergency Services Director Kim Cannady and AHS’s Tara Sieben, the course was held with assistance from Alyssa Zamzow from Alberta Health Services, Flagstaff County Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski, and FRESS Firefighters Chad Kuefler and Nathan Lunty. In all, 78 students, from Kindergarten through to Grade 6, were taught bicycle safety. Cannady says, “We started with a bike inspection, checking tires, brakes, chain, and seat height. “Then we talked about the importance of helmet use and proper fitting, followed up with hand signals.” Then the real fun began, as the kids got to ride through a course set up on the street. “The Village of Forestburg was good to block off

the street, giving us the whole street to practice on,” says Cannady. He says this is close to the 10th year of holding the event in Forestburg. “We always enjoy doing this for the kids, and hope this makes riding bikes safer for all participants.” Killam RCMP Detaching Acting Corporal Nicholas Daigle says learning bike safety is important. He recommends that all cyclists wear proper safety equipment, such as a helmet, as well as highvisibility clothing. Daigle says bike communication is important. Using hand signals is the only way cyclists have to make drivers aware of their intentions. “The public is encouraged to familiarize themselves with hand signals so that they can communicate with motorists.” He also would like to discourage a concerning trend of seeing cyclists riding on the opposite side of the road. “Biking on the opposite side of the road (facing into oncoming traffic) is not recom-

mended.” Bicycle safety is not just for kids, says the Canada Safety Council. “A bicycle is classified as a vehicle which belongs on the road. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. “You must obey the same rules of the road when riding your bike as you do when driving your car. “Cyclists, like motorists, must ride on the right side of the road (except on two-way designated bicycle paths), be sober, stop for stop signs and red lights, signal turns, and yield to traffic that has the right-of-way.” Spruce Grove RCMP have noticed an alarming increase of bicycle accidents already this season, and add, “Police would also like to remind everyone that if you are distracted by a hand-held electronic device, the chances of getting into a collision greatly increase. “It is everyone’s responsibility to do their part so we can all safely enjoy the activities we do.”

Daysland Parent Council looking for some Participaction Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Daysland School Parent Council is looking at finishing the new playground by completing a new track for school athletes, but so far that’s proven to be a daunting task. Council member Laura Zwack says that estimates the group has received are around the $300,000 mark, and says only about $15,000 of that is labour, the rest is the actual cost of materials. She says the group has applied for a number of community grants, but has not been successful. It was through that process that they discovered their latest project, which even if it doesn’t turn out to be ‘the one’ will still bring a great benefit to both students and the entire community. Daysland Parent Council has registered with the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge. It runs from June 1 to 30, and is a national physical activity initiative that encourages Canadians to get active in search of Canada’s Most Active Community. One community will earn a grand prize of $100,000, and there are 13 other prizes available, five in Alberta. Zwack says, “It’s not necessarily sheer numbers, because of course we can’t compete with a city. It’s based on a percentage of the population who participate, and that’s where we have a real chance, if we can get more people moving and registering.” Community members and groups can either track their activity by downloading the free ParticipACTION app from Google Play or the App Store, or community members can also track physical activity minutes for themselves, their families or an organization or group on the website. (www.participaction.com/ community/challenge). Zwack says the school has been tracking students’ hours as they participate in swimming lessons, and hikes, and says Providence Place has already partnered with the school to add their residents’ activities. “I have also approached the Daysland Seniors Club and they were excited

about helping, too,” she says. Zwack says there’s no fancy equipment needed. “You don’t need a fancy watch, you can manually enter your activities either through the app or online. “It doesn’t matter if you are walking, gardening, or housecleaning; if you register and log your time, it all counts.” Zwack says she has a

family account, and swears, “I’ve never walked so much in my life, logging around 15,000 steps a day.” She says, “You can also have an organization account, like a ball team, soccer team, as a business, or whoever. You can enter individually and be eligible for daily prizes, and teams can win weekly prizes.” She says for the big prize, as far as she under-

stands, the top 50 communities will be picked and invited to submit an essay on why they should be the winning community and win one of the 13 available prizes. Zwack says Participation categorizes Daysland as “Daysland/Heisler,” broadening the number of people who can help. At present, Daysland/Heisler is in

14th place on the Alberta leaderboard, and she’d like to hit the top five by the end of June or sooner. She says Daysland has such incredible recreation facilities, like the walking trail and golf course, and anyone using them and tracking their time can help. Planning ahead, Zwack is also looking for participating individuals and

groups to take photos of themselves participating, and either share them to the Daysland and District Families social media, or send them to her directly. Participating in the Most Active Community challenge won’t just help the school, it’s a great opportunity to get active for a great cause and reap the benefits both physically and mentally.
