Alberta Order of Excellence Former Premier Ed Stelmach from Andrew named among seven Albertans to receive special honour BY JOHN MATHER On June 29, former Alberta premier Ed Stelmch received a phone call from outgoing Lieutenant Governor Lois Mitchell informing him that he had been named to the Alberta Order of Excellence. “She told me the results of the selection panel,” he said. “She added there will be an investiture ceremony, hopefully late in the year after the Covid 19 issues come to an end.” “That was really quite a surprise,” he said. The Order of Excellence is given to Albertans who have made outstanding provincial, national or international impact and it is the highest honour a citizen can receive as an official part of the Canadian Honours System. Stelmach was the premier of Alberta from 2006 until 2011. He succeeded Ralph Klein at the helm of the province.
Prior to becoming Premier, he had served as the MLA for VegrevilleViking and later as the MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville. He was the Division 4 councillor in Lamont County from 1986 until he stepped down to run as an MLA. He was the County Reeve from 1987 until he resigned in 1993. He feels he may also have received the Order of Excellence not only for his involvement in politics, but because of his volunteer work both in the County and around the province. Stelmach, along with his wife Marie, founded the Ed Stelmach Community Foundation in 2007. It provides assistance to small Alberta-based charities such as Calgary Reads, L’Arche Edmonton, Aspire Special Needs (Red Deer), the Vermilion and District Housing Foundation, and Families First in Fort Saskatchewan. He serves as the chair of Covenant
Health, the largest Catholic healthcare provider in Canada; is a past vice chair with Genalta Power, and a past honourary Director of the Consulting Engineers of Alberta. Stelmach is still an active volunteer with the Edmonton Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy, the Andrew Lions Club, St, Michael Community Association, and the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood. The Alberta Order of Excellence was established in 1979 and is the highest award the province can bestow on its citizens. With seven inductees for this year, there are 188 members who are entitled to use the letters AOE after their name. Inducted along with Stelmach for 2020 were: JudyLynn Archer of Edmonton; Jim Boucher, of Fort McKay; Charlie Fischer, of Calgary; Frances Harley of Edmonton; John Mah, of Edmonton; and Holger Petersen, of Edmonton.
