Rural home lost to fire

Daysland and Bawlf fire fighters responded to a fire call on the evening of Tuesday, June 29, to find a fire in the northeast area of Flagstaff County burning. Firefighters tried to contain the blaze but were unable to save the home. Regional Emergency Services Coordinator Kim Cannady says the blaze was started by a barbeque. The Flagstaff County water tender truck also responded from Killam, with Chief Joe Knievel returning to Daysland twice to refill the 2,500 gallon tank to supplement the water supply in Dayslandʼs fire truck. Cannady says that at least one firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion due to the extreme temperatures and was treated on scene.

Just one day after firefighters in the east end of Flagstaff County battled a series of large fires, Daysland firefighters were called out on Tuesday, June 29, for a structure fire in the northeast corner of Flagstaff County. Flagstaff Emergency Services Coordinator and Regional Fire Chief Kim Cannady says the house fire was started by a barbeque that was too close to a wall. He says, “The occupants discovered the fire travelling up the outside wall and called 911, but by the time firefighters arrived the fire had reached under the eaves of the home. “Firefighters tried to contain it to the attic and top floor, but it was too late, and the house was destroyed,” Cannady says. “Fortunately, the occupants were all out of the house so no one was injured.” Cannady says the Flagstaff County water tender was called in from Killam, and the Bawlf Fire Department was also called to assist, “But it was just too advanced to extinguish.” Killam Fire Chief Joe Knievel, who brought the water tender to the fire, says he returned to Daysland twice to refill the truck, which holds roughly 2,500 gallons of water. Cannady says the extreme heat played a part in extinguishing the fire, with at least one fire fighter suffering from heat exhaustion at the scene.
