Cloverlodge Stampede was back in action after a year hiatus due to COVID-19 during the weekend of July 24 and 25. There was a great attendance during both days of action and never a dull moment. The crowd was there to cheer on the competitors, getting extra loud for the local riders. It was a successful weekend at the rodeo grounds.

Pre-Kindergarten Paisley Merta competed with the Wainwright Gymnastic Club Saturday, July 24. This is her second year with the club.

The Wainwright Gymnastics Club held their annual Flip Flop Fun meet over the past weekend, where gymnasts performed for the judges, and for their families, for the first time this year. Parents had not set foot in the gym since March 2020 to watch, so there were a lot of proud smiles to go around.

The club says the last year-and-a-half have seen some interesting times for the sport of gymnastics.

“With three shut downs and not much training in the gym happening, we are certainly happy to be back to somewhat normal training now.”

The club started up again in June, and have been training hard to finish this season.

Paisley Merta, who starts Kindergarten in Viking this fall, has been attending Wainwright for two years now and is being coached by her Auntie Jorja Andreson.

She did a great job showing off her new Level 1 routines to the crowd.

She, along with the rest of the club, will continue to train into

the fall and compete with the team in 2022 season once the competitions are underway again.

Word on the Street: violent assault reported On July 19, police learned that a male had failed to attend court that morning in Vegreville as required to answer to several charges previously laid by Viking RCMP. Three warrants were issued for the arrest of Mathew Arnold Penner and an additional charge has been laid for failing to appear in court.

On July 20, police received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle parked at the Kinsella Community Centre. The complainant advised the vehicle had been there for three days. Police spoke with the registered owner who attended and removed the vehicle.

Later that morning, police received a complaint of a break and enter at a gas lease site near Bruce. The culprits pried open an office door and also cut and stole several feet of wire. This also caused several thousand dollars worth of damage at the site. Police do not have any suspects at this time.

Also, that day, police received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle parked on a street in Bruce for the last couple of days. Police spoke with the registered owner who made arrangements to have the vehicle removed.

On July 21, while conducting traffic enforcement, police located a driver with an outstanding warrant held by Edmonton Police Service.

The driver was arrested and later released to appear in Edmonton Provincial Court to deal with his charge.

On July 22, police received a complaint of an attempted fraud. The complainant advised someone had tried to cash a cheque on an old bank account that hadn’t been in use for a while.

This matter is still under investigation.

That evening, police received a report of mischief at a rural location west of Viking. The complainant advised someone had cut three wires in his fence, which allowed his livestock to get out. Police have no

suspects at this time.

On July 23, police received a complaint of a theft of two large flowerpots in Viking. Police are following up on this incident.

That afternoon, police were advised of minor damage to a sign at a local gas station caused by a customer’s truck.

The complainant advised the customer would not return his calls and he was looking for police assistance with this matter. Police advised the matter was civil in nature and they were not able to provide assistance.

That same day, a citizen contacted police to advise he had been the subject of a “grandparent scam” attempt.

The complainant advised he had received a phone call from a male claiming to be his grandson. The male advised he had been arrested and his lawyer would contact him with further instructions on getting him released.

A second male called the complainant claiming to be his grandson’s

lawyer and advised he needed to transfer $3,000 to a bank account before his grandson could be released.

Fortunately, the complainant called his grandson who confirmed he was at work and had not been arrested, so no money was transferred and he did not become a

victim of this fraud.

Police have seen a significant increase in various types of fraud complaints over the past few months. They would like to remind the public to never give out banking, credit card or other types of personal information over the phone to anyone See RCMP P7 21081AA3

Opinion Fraudsters try to prey on emotions

Read: Education Minister needs to listen to parents How about Jason Kenney’s idea to disenfranchise some taxpayers and just let the constituents who are currently policed by the RCMP vote on whether to keep the RCMP? By that logic, only Parents would have a say on whether to proceed with the 2021 Draft Curriculum.

Instead, Minister LaGrange is trying to silence and disenfranchise the Parents.

Education Minister LaGrange has announced that she is accepting applications for a new Parent Advisory Council. The definition, from the Government’s web page, is: “The Minister’s Parent Advisory Council is the voice of parents in Alberta.” THE voice of parents in Alberta. Alarm bells are ringing in all the other groups who thought they were the voice of at least some of the parents in Alberta.

The Alberta School Councils Association (ASCA) has democratically elected leadership representing over 1300 school councils in Alberta. Their policy positions have been communicated to the Minister, but there has been no response.

It appears the Minister is replacing a democratically elected body with one of 40 hand-picked, well-vetted members, whose input will be limited to responding as individuals 3-4 times a year during Zoom meetings…and whose input may then quite possibly be ignored.

Certainly ASCA and other groups and individuals are feeling ignored.

Parents concerned about the draft curriculum swamped the Minister’s office with so many phone calls and emails that they brought in staff from other departments. The Minister has had a massive amount of feedback already.

She just hasn’t listened to it. So far the government has used the valid criticisms of the curriculum to formulate

We’ve all heard about the fraudulent calls from Canada Revenue, attempting to guilt or scare Canadians into parting with their hard-earned dollars.

Or have we?

A friend of mine received five separate calls in the past two weeks. All claiming to be Canada Revenue, all claiming that payment was overdue, most threatening that the police were ‘on the way.’

I’ve talked about this with my family and others, and many people do seem aware that this is a common scam.

But along with many of those conversations has come a story about one friend, relative, or friend of a friend who was not aware of this scam, and who was taken in.

Most times these callers are stern, accusatory, and talking fast. They can often put you in a heightened emotional state; making you feel angry, guilty, or scared.

That’s the key to how these scams are successful, because any of these feelings can lead you to stop thinking rationally about the message you’re hearing, or the feasibility of what you’re being instructed to do.

Canada Revenue Agency has warned that they do not accept payments via gift cards, or bitcoin. That’s one of the biggest ‘tells’ these scammers are counting on you not knowing.

Another common scam is the bank inspector. Someone calls you to tell you they need your help catching a suspect bank employee. That they need you to withdraw or transfer funds from your bank account as ‘bait’ to catch this individual.

That’s not how banks operate! No bank employee, ever, will ask you to ‘meet them in the parking lot with cash.’ Sometimes this scam includes asking you for your credit card number to help catch this ‘suspect.’ If an individual was truly calling from your bank, they’d already know your credit card number.

Our instinct is to help however we can, again, preying on our emotions. We’re proud to be asked to help in this very urgent, confidential matter! So we throw caution to the wind as we’re caught up in the excitement of catching the bad guy!

Seniors are particularly vulnerable to some of these types of scams, not because they are not intelligent, but some of these scams try to take advantage of the deep feelings many grandparents have for their extended family. Phone calls from supposed grandchildren needing bail money, or having had a vehicle accident, or having trouble while out of country all are designed to put the victim in a heightened sense of worry, and relies on the basic love of family and that concern to ignore warning signals that something isn’t quite right.

Lonely, vulnerable people, from pre-teens to seniors, are sometimes prey to those who appear to care deeply for them. Who fake feelings of love and desire to con their victims into sending inappropriate photos, or who pretend to fall in love, then start asking for some financial help. The photos are then used to blackmail, and the “financial help” can run into thousands of dollars, leaving victims feeling ashamed, and unlikely to admit being scammed.

Other scams prey on those who feel like they’ve tried everything to lose weight, with ‘miracle compounds’ that claim to melt fat; or promise relief to those who experience chronic pain.

The scammer’s key to success is preying on hopes and dreams, or exploiting guilt and fear.

The only way to truly combat fraud is to talk about it, to educate yourself and others. To make sure everyone in your circle of family and friends is aware that these types of scams exist, and guards against them.

The government is still insisting that the draft curriculum, as is, is age appropriate. At a recent “Have Your Say” information session, parents were told that age-appropriateness was, in fact, “top of mind” during curriculum development.

Let’s look at the Social Studies curriculum for grade two (Think 7-yearolds, and about 120 instructional minutes per week for SS): Explain belief systems associated with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Create a timeline for the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. Distinguish between Roman and Greek contributions to modern life. Explain the significance of Charlemagne’s rule in the medieval era. Explain the changes in the law in medieval England. Explain the difference in the systems of government between the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic, and Imperial Rome.

Ask questions: Was the Magna Carta the beginning of English democracy through Parliament?

This is just a FRACTION of what appears in the skills section for SS in grade two, and it all sounds like essay questions for university courses. The Minister insists this curriculum is age appropriate. It is not. It is dangerously inappropriate and will lead to stress and failure.

Minister LaGrange, you don’t need another Parent Advisory Council. You need to listen to the parents who have already spoken, including the democratically elected leadership of ASCA. “Protect quality education” as you promised to do in your published election platform. Promise made, promise broken…

Viking RCMP execute two search warrants for July On Thursday, July 8, Viking RCMP executed a search warrant at a rural property near Bruce.

Their investigation resulted in the recovery of a 2016 Infiniti SUV that had been reported stolen out of St. Albert, as well as ammunition, gun parts, various knives,

Canada scored its first gold medal at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on Sunday, July 25, when Margaret Mac Neil came out ahead in the 100m butterfly swim event.

A second gold came overnight Monday with Maude Charron’s weightlifting gold.

Canada also has three silver medals. The first came Saturday, July 24 from Kayla Sanchez, Margaret Mac Neil, Rebecca Smith, and Penny Oleksiak in the 4x100m swimming relay, including heat swimmer Taylor Ruck. Oleksiak is only the third Canadian to win five medals at the Olympics.

Canada’s second silver medal

came from Jennifer Abel and Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu in Women’s 3m Synchro Springboard diving.

Monday evening saw Kylie Masse in the Women’s 100m backstroke win Canada’s third Silver.

Canada now also has 3 Bronze medals. The first was won by Jessica Klimkait in Judo. She has become the first Canadian woman to medal in the sport.

Her teammate Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard took a second Bronze in Judo Monday night.

The Canadian Women’s Softball team also won Bronze Monday.

Canada has 370 athletes competing in this year’s games, which started with the opening ceremony on Friday, July 23, and will end Sunday, Aug. 8 at the closing ceremony.

Dispensing times are now faster and both bays will operate at the same time. There are catch basins to collect spillage and reduce icing as well as a heated concrete pad.

The larger commercial bay will dispense approximately one cubic meter per minute and the smaller fill bay will now dispense one cubic meter in a minute and a half.

Once an account is established, the customer can add credit to the account by calling the office or online. Online transactions can take up to 2 hours to update on the dispensing system.

The bulls were tough competition and made for a good show as hooves left the ground and cowboys sent sailing. The wild pony races had surprisingly quick competitors, and kept everyone effortlessly entertained. The weather was perfect for riding.

Multiple points discussed during July council meetings Beaver County Council met July 7 and discussed the seed cleaning plant, BESC and rural crime.

Seed Cleaning Plant The Beaver County Seed Cleaning Coop Ltd. manages the Beaver County Seed Cleaning Plant. This facility provides area grain growers a facility where they can clean seed and improve seed grain through separation.

The plant has been in operation for over 60 years, starting in 1959, and the county is closely involved by providing funding and representation on the board.

The plant’s services include grain and dockage cleaning, weighing products, preparing samples for the seed lab and providing information on new varieties, pests and diseases and regulatory information.

A report to county council July 7 stated that a record 391,000 bu. of grain had been cleaned and barley seed had sold out. Also, repairs being made were almost completed; however, it was stated that the colour sorter needs to be replaced.

The latest inspection rating was 99 per cent and it was reported that the customers were happy with the service they received.

BESC Strategic Planning Session Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) reported on the Beaver Emergency Services Commission (BESC).

Hrabec, who is BESC Chair, said the board had “one of the most dynamic meetings in a long time.”

“We got information about things that need to get done,” he said, adding that “with (COVID-19) restrictions opening up it should be better.”

The commission is working on updating its bylaws as mandated by the province. Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1), who also sits on the commission board, said that BESC held a Strategic Planning Session recently, reporting that “we did some pretty good updating,” during that session.

Meeting with Justice Minister Madu Council discussed a meeting that Deputy Reeve Hrabec and Councillor Barry Bruce (Division 4) were scheduled to attend the following day in Lac La Biche.

It was decided that the topic for dis-

cussion would be “addictions driving rural crime.”

Hrabec said that the “police are doing a lot of good work,” and some arrested persons are being held in detention longer than the “catch and release” program that appears to be operating in the criminal justice system at this time. But Hrabec said there is still a problem of criminals “who get out and continue with the same crimes.”

An aggravating factor to that is the fact that the county is geographically close to the City of Edmonton he said, which makes it easy for criminals to come out and commit crimes in this rural area.

Reeve Jim Kallal (Division 2) had also suggested as a second option that they discuss the police funding issue.

Beaver County Council had a large agenda at its July 21 meeting.

County Declares Agricultural Disaster Council passed a motion declaring an Agricultural Disaster based on current drought conditions.

An Agricultural Disaster declaration can be used by municipalities to bring awareness to issues surrounding excessive moisture and drought which are having an impact on agricultural production.

Municipal declarations do not automatically trigger access to increased funding programs, provincially or federally. A provincial declaration is necessary to trigger claim payments through AFSC. On July 15, it was announced that the federal government will activate the AgriRecovery program for western farmers.

Conditions within Beaver County have been hot and dry over the last few weeks, which does factor in to crop development and potential yields. Across the county there has been some variability in the amount of moisture received and some areas may be a bit better off than other areas. The development of localized storms may also have had an impact on crops, either by providing needed moisture or causing damage to crops, depending on the length and duration of the storm.

Drainage concerns results in motion Jason Suchy, Division 3, resident, attended council’s July 21 meeting to

express concerns regarding drainage issues along Waskwei Creek as follows: Beaver dams are affecting infrastructure; The drainage issue affects approximately 40 quarters; The time to deal with this issue is now as flooding will occur once it rains or snows.

Later in the meeting council passed a motion directing that administration return with an RFP with a cost for removal of dams along Waskwei Creek from Township Road 500 north to Township Road 512.

Surface Drainage Bylaw Public Hearing Bylaw 21-1100 was presented to council for consideration at the July 7, regular council meeting. The proposed Surface Drainage Bylaw will enable the county to control surface drainage and restrict alterations to land that could create drainage concerns. Council passed first reading of the bylaw and requested that a public hearing be held to obtain stakeholder input on the bylaw.

Council passed a motion to amend Bylaw 21-1100 as follows: Add Section 2, Subsection (i) to read: “Owner” means any person who is the registered owner on the Certificate of Title at the Land Titles Office, or any other person who is in lawful possession thereof, or who is in lawful possession or occupancy of any buildings situated thereon, or any agent of, or person acting on behalf of the owner, including but not limited to a contractor.

Bruce Stampede Association Request for Sponsorship The Bruce Sports and Stampede Association directors have decided to proceed with the 107th Bruce Stampede on July 30 to August 1 and requested that Council approve a Platinum Sponsorship of $2,500 for the Bruce Sports and Stampede Association.

Since COVID restrictions were still in effect in February and an end date was unclear, the directors of the Bruce Sports and Stampede Association were unsure if the stampede was going to be permitted to occur, therefore did not submit a request for sponsorship before the February 28 deadline.

Council passed a motion to approve a Platinum Sponsorship of $2,500 for the Bruce Sports and Stampede Association.

Fire Protection Considered for Subdivisions The county received a request from a ratepayer in Birch Grove Estates, interested in exploring whether the county would consider the installation of a dry barrel hydrant system or drafting hydrant system to service the subdivision.

Council passed a motion that administration pursue, with the assistance of the Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission and Beaver Emergency Services Commission, the costs and feasibility of various fire protection alternatives in all rural subdivisions.

Expanding Roadside Spraying Council passed a motion approving the expansion of the current mowing program for 2021 and that Council revisit the Mowing Policy.

Roadside Vegetation Removal Program Council discussed managing cattails in roadside ditches and directed administration to report back on the feasibility of a program of this nature. Council passed a motion to defer a Roadside Vegetation Removal Program to 2022 budget discussions.

Council Selects Farm Family Award Winners The 2021 Farm Family Award was discussed in closed session. Administration was directed to bring back a policy amendment for council’s review.

Under the current policy, the farm family unit must be recognized by the Northlands Farm Family Award program to receive the county award. The county award currently is $200 in county promotional items.

Council passed a motion to amend the Farm Family Award policy to allow council to award the Farm Family Award independent of the Northland’s Award. Council also deleted the Farm Family Award Administrative Procedure.

Council also passed a motion appointing the Kittle Family as the 2021 Beaver County Farm Family Award recipients.

Beaver County Website Updates Councillor Barry Bruce expressed concerns that the county website is difficult to navigate and not user friendly.

Administration advised that updates are pending; however, staffing/time limitations are an issue.

County putting up 12 properties to auction off for non-payment of taxes Patricia Harcourt Beaver County set reserve bids on 12 properties that are set to go up for public auction on Aug. 25 because of non-payment of taxes.

County Assessor Orest Golinowski stated at county council’s regular meeting July 7 that properties are offered at public auction so the county can recover taxes in arrears for two years.

The sale will be advertised, and Golinowski advised that property owners have up to the auction date to pay the taxes and keep their property.

Councillor Dale Pederson inquired if most of the properties were located in the county’s hamlets of Bruce and Kinsella. Golinowski replied that they were, with two in Kinsella which is in Pederson’s Division 5.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) wondered if the deadlines for payment of taxes that were extended last year due to the pandemic affected this process in any way.

But Golinowski replied that the fact late payment penalties were dropped from 12 per cent to six per cent last year “in no way affects this.”

Councillor Kevin Smook (Division 1) inquired if there were costs attached to the process, and the assessor said all costs are recouped from the money derived from the sale.

He added that landowners “have until the tenth hour on August 25 to redeem themselves and pay their taxes.”

The county may become the owner of a property that is not sold at public auction. However, he said that “usually the property owners or mortgage companies pay the tax arrears before the sale is actually conducted.”

But the setting of reserve bids must be done to prepare for the public auction should that not happen.

A motion was passed, unanimously, to set the reserve bids as presented by administration.

First of all this issue needs to be on the ballots at this falls election.

Gaining unauthorized access to private land is a very serious action.

There are plant disease issues, there are personal issues, there are human right issues.

Is our county qualified to dictate to

MLA Lovely on hand at Cloverlodge Stampede in Viking over weekend

MLA Jackie Lovely was on hand at the Cloverlodge Stampede on the weekend to give Greetings from the Legislature. Jackie was instrumental in the funding of the new Chutes and Back Pens and wanted to see the system for herself. Jackie spoke of the hard work of the Cloverlodge Stampede Committee and wanted to acknowledge their determination to complete the new chute system.

State of Agricultural Disaster Declared

Beaver County Council Declares State of Agricultural Disaster due to Drought Conditions July 21, 2021 – Beaver County has declared a State of Agricultural Disaster in response to extreme drought conditions which have affected local producers.

An Agricultural Disaster Declaration can be used by municipalities to bring awareness to issues surrounding excessive moisture and drought which are having an impact on agricultural production. It should be noted that municipal declarations do not automatically trigger access to increased funding programs, Provincially or Federally. A Provincial declaration is necessary to trigger claim payments through AFSC. “County Council has issued this declaration of Agricultural Disaster to encourage the Provincial and Federal Governments to initiate necessary programs that can provide relief to our local producers, and that it is done in a timely manner” stated Reeve Jim Kallal.

The weather has been very hot and dry over the last few weeks, which does factor in to crop development and potential yields. Across the County there has been some variability in the amount of moisture received and some areas may be a bit better off than other areas.

Canola crops have begun to bloom but due to timing of the heat, it will probably mean a 25-50% or more yield loss in some instances, where field stands were already thin.

Cereal crops show a range of tolerance to this hot, dry weather but some are becoming burnt or showing reduced seed head development. Other crops in the County, such as peas and flax, may be a challenge to harvest due to the stunted growth which has occurred.

Grass also requires moisture to grow and pastures in the area are drying out, which is a concern for livestock producers. Hay production has been taking place however producers are not getting the anticipated number of bales or the volume of weight in hay that they expected off the fields and this could lead to reduced feed availability.

Moisture is needed, and rather quickly, to get crops and grasses that are still surviving in the field through to the end of the season.

Beaver County Council has given first reading to a Surface Drainage Bylaw and is now inviting public input.

The Surface Drainage Bylaw will enable the County to investigate drainage-related complaints wherever the County has jurisdiction over drainage and waterbodies. This applies primarily to the registered subdivisions in Divisions One and Two. Surface water diversions on agricultural lands remain under the jurisdiction of Alberta Environment and Parks and may require an authorization from Alberta Environment and Parks.

2021 Municipal Election 2021 is the year of municipal elections and October 18, 2021 is Election Day. In the past, submission of nominations was restricted to one day only. The Local Authorities Election Act has been amended to extend the time period during which nominations can be filed.

The County’s Surface Drainage Bylaw prohibits the alteration of the surface elevation or grade of any property (public or private) if such work creates a nuisance or danger, adversely affects the stability of a slope, alters an on-site storm water management system, or alters the elevation of an adjacent property. The Bylaw also restricts naturally occurring drainage features or easements from being filled, drained, or redirected.

Enforcement of the Bylaw includes the power of a County Designated Officer to enter onto the property (after reasonable notice is given) to carry out an inspection and obtain information. The Designated Officer may issue a fine for contravention of the Bylaw and/or may issue an Order to a person to return the property to its original state. The costs incurred for the remediation action are the responsibility of the landowner or the person who caused the contravention.

Fraud on the rise

The Killam RCMP Detachment is presently warning residents that fraud is on the rise in Alberta.

In the past year, from March 2020 to February 2021, there have been over 10,700 reports of fraud to Alberta RCMP, and likely many more attempts not reported.

That’s over 29 cases of fraud every day in this province.

Nearly 20 per cent of fraud cases in Alberta involve identity theft and impersonation. These include frauds where victims disclose bank account information, credit card information, and essential personal information like birthdates and social insurance numbers.

The top 10 charges related to frauds in Alberta are: Money, property, and security fraud of $5,000 or less; Identity Fraud; money, property, and security fraud over $5,000; identity theft; theft, forgery, or misuse of credit cards; using, selling, or possessing a forged document; illegally trafficking or possessing government documents; obtaining food or lodging by fraud; obtaining transportation by fraud; and unauthorized use of computer accounts.

RCMP have some key messages to consider to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

• Does this transaction make sense?

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

•Ignore communication from

•Don’t leave personal identification cards, like drivers licences, in your vehicle.

•Purchase items from reputable organizations.

•Research organizations via the Better Business Bureau.

•Regularly monitor credit card statements for unknown or suspicious charges.

It’s also good to be aware that the RCMP and Revenue Canada will never asks for deposits in Bitcoin machines, iTunes cards, or Apple Play cards.

RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to police. Unfortunately, not all fraudsters are operating via telephone or email, sometimes it’s happening right in our community.

Cst. Nicholas Daigle, acting supervisor at the Killam Detachment says, “Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future.”

Nationally, in 2021 so far, Canadians have reported 40,341 instances of fraud, with 28,517 victims, who lost a total of $105.4 million. That’s just half a year, and almost at 2020’s total of $106 million already.

Viking Train Station looking for financial help with ‘Put a Lid On It’ campaign The CN rail line was laid through the Viking town site in 1908-09 and was one of the reasons our community was founded, and prospered, here. For more than 60 years, both freight and passenger service kept CN trains stopping regularly in Viking. Kings and Queens, Presidents and Prime Ministers saw Viking through the windows on a CN train.

In 1973, the Viking CN Station closed due to the decrease in passenger travel. The Station sat empty for 12 years. In 1990, a movement began to preserve and restore this beautiful historic building. A new base-

ment was constructed 75 feet to the south of the original site, and the old station was moved onto this permanent foundation in 1992.

In the ensuing years, the challenge has always been to maintain the building, and keep it alive and functioning.

Over the years, it has been home to our Tourist Information, the Station Art Guild and Gallery, a number of tea rooms/coffee shops, and rented out for a variety of functions. Currently the Station Tea House boasts a popular luncheon menu and features home-made pies that bring customers from

Keith and Lorna Creasy welcomed a new grandson with the arrival of Ezra Keith, born to Jeremy and Alannah Creasy of Wainwright. Ezra is a baby brother for Macy, William, and Kate.

Harold Elliott of Edmonton passed away on July 12 at the age of 96. He grew up in the Irma area before joining the Navy during World War II. Summerspiel activities are already underway with stick curling from Sunday to Wednesday followed by regular curling.

Irma hosted a very successful fastball tournament on the weekend.

Congratulations to the U16 girls on winning the gold medal in their provincials.

The Senior Tigers were playing Grande Prairie in the final on Sunday.

The score was 2-2 but both Grande Prairie pitchers were too injured to continue causing them to forfeit the game.

Many thanks to all the volunteers for keeping the ball diamonds in such great condition, the gate and booth workers, and to the community for donating delicious desserts to the food booth. It takes a village!

Irma Days is upon us.

It’s time to get your individual, business, or organizational parade entry ready. The parade will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The pancake breakfast will be held Saturday morning at the north end of Irma School.

Check out the Irma Gun and Antique Show at the Irma Arena on Saturday and Sunday.

The area has had some scattered showers this past week but more rain would be welcome.

There is no doubt this beautiful, historical building needs to be preserved. And that is our challenge. The Station Art Guild has assumed responsibility for the operations and upkeep of the building and surrounding gardens. Our only source of income is modest rental of the Tea House, and periodically working casinos. While this meager income pays the utilities and insur-

ance, it does not allow for major repairs.

And that has become our immediate challenge. Our roof is in serious need of repair and re-shingling. While the roof facing Main Street has been more recently re-shingled, the roof facing the CN tracks has been leaking for years and has been patched

beyond function. We are now experiencing leaks through the ceiling inside the Station, and if the roof is not adequately repaired, additional damage and deterioration will spread into the interior.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!! We are asking for the financial support of our community to

help us “PUT A LID ON IT”. We anticipate a cost of $50,000 to repair and re-shingle the roof, repair the soffits, and some interior structural damage on rafters and eaves troughs.
