Unusual residents take over Strome birdhouse

Strome resident Andy Nykolaishyn has an unusual display of birdhouses in his yard, and recently noticed something odd about one of them. It appears that either bees or wasps have decided to move in, completely covering one of the houses with their nest.

Howdy my fellow Killamites!

It looks like the smokey weather is behind us, for now. Sadly more and more fires are popping up in BC and that smokes seems to always find its way to us.

It has been a busy week for me as I’ve been at three rodeos to cover for the paper.

Hardisty was last weekend, and that was a lot of fun. The Street Fair was a blast and the stands were packed for the rodeo action.

Then on Wednesday I went North up to Kinsella for their annual Bullarama. The bulls this year seem to have had a good year of rest because they have been tough on the riders. I guess that is what makes it all the more fun to watch!

Then this last weekend I was up in Viking for the Cloverlodge Stampede. They had a lot going on, with different rodeo events as well as bouncy houses and a money sand pit.

You can tell everyone is excited to finally have something to do this summer now that COVID restrictions have lifted.

Next weekend is Bruce Stampede so I hope to see you there!

In my Killam News two weeks ago I mistakenly mentioned that at the Seniors Centre for

coffee that it was seniors who were welcome.

I did not mean to make that sound like only seniors are welcome. Anyone who wants to come in for coffee is welcome! Like I said, it is a fun crowd to sit down and chat with!

Fraudsters prey on emotion to part victims from their money We’ve all heard about the fraudulent calls from Canada Revenue, attempting to guilt or scare Canadians into parting with their hard-earned dollars.

Or have we?

A friend of mine received five separate calls in the past two weeks. All claiming to be Canada Revenue, all claiming that payment was overdue, most threatening that the police were ‘on the way.’

I’ve talked about this with my family and others, and many people do seem aware that this is a common scam.

But along with many of those conversations has come a story about one friend, relative, or friend of a friend who was not aware of this scam, and who was taken in.

Most times these callers are stern, accusatory, and talking fast. They can often put you in a heightened emotional state; making you feel angry, guilty, or scared.

That’s the key to how these scams are successful, because any of these feelings can lead you to stop thinking rationally about the message you’re hearing, or the feasibility of what you’re being instructed to do.

Canada Revenue Agency has warned that they do not accept payments via gift cards, or bitcoin. That’s one of the biggest ‘tells’ these scammers are counting on you not knowing.

Another common scam is the bank inspector. Someone calls you to tell you they need your help catching a suspect bank employee. That they need you to withdraw or transfer funds from your bank account as ‘bait’ to catch this individual.

That’s not how banks operate! No bank employee, ever, will ask you to ‘meet them in the parking lot with cash.’ Sometimes this scam includes asking you for your credit card number to help catch this ‘suspect.’ If an individual was truly calling from your bank, they’d already know your credit card number.

Our instinct is to help however we can, again, preying on our emotions. We’re proud to be asked to help in this very urgent, confidential matter! So we throw caution to the wind as we’re caught up in the excitement of catching the bad guy!

Seniors are particularly vulnerable to some of these types of scams, not because they are not intelligent, but some of these scams try to take advantage of the deep feelings many grandparents have for their extended family. Phone calls from supposed grandchildren needing bail money, or having had a vehicle accident, or having trouble while out of country all are designed to put the victim in a heightened sense of worry, and relies on the basic love of family and that concern to ignore warning signals that something isn’t quite right.

Lonely, vulnerable people, from pre-teens to seniors, are sometimes prey to those who appear to care deeply for them. Who fake feelings of love and desire to con their victims into sending inappropriate photos, or who pretend to fall in love, then start asking for some financial help. The photos are then used to blackmail, and the “financial help” can run into thousands of dollars, leaving victims feeling ashamed, and unlikely to admit being scammed.

Other scams prey on those who feel like they’ve tried everything to lose weight, with ‘miracle compounds’ that claim to melt fat; or promise relief to those who experience chronic pain.

The scammer’s key to success is preying on hopes and dreams, or exploiting guilt and fear.

The only way to truly combat fraud is to talk about it, to educate yourself and others. To make sure everyone in your circle of family and friends is aware that these types of scams exist, and guards against them.

A crisis in agriculture Record high temperatures coupled with little rainfall over the last month have greatly damaged the crop and feed outlook throughout Western Canada, resulting in farmers and ranchers in precarious positions.

Having seen the widespread devastation firsthand, I would like to take this opportunity to express my support for farmers, ranchers, and agriculture producers during these challenging times, while highlighting the importance of Canada’s Ag Industry.

The importance of a stable agricultural industry, as well as a stable commodity and food supply chain, cannot be understated. This is why my Conservative colleagues and I, along with our provincial and municipal partners, are working together to ensure our Ag Industry is supported and provided with the necessary assistance to survive what could be the worst drought in decades.

To aid farmers, ranchers, and the entire agricultural industry, Conservatives have been calling on the Federal Liberal Government to take action. To put aside political differences to assist this essential industry.

If you are a producer affected and need more information, please feel free to reach out to my office as programs and supports are changing rapidly.

While we are finally seeing the light at the end of the COVID tunnel, Canadians and everyone involved in agriculture cannot afford to be burdened with massive disruptions.

I am asking those in the Ag Industry in Battle River-Crowfoot to reach out to my office and describe how the drought is affecting your operations. Your feedback and input are greatly valued as it provides me with the insight needed to address problems in Battle River-Crowfoot.

As a fifth-generation farmer, my family is also feeling the impacts and I know how difficult times can stress a farmer’s bottom line, their long-term viability, and their mental health.

On a different note, I would like to thank the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, the Hon. Erin O’Toole, along with Conservative Shadow Minister of Agriculture, MP Lianne Rood, and fellow Conservative MPs Martin Shields and Earl Dreeshen, as well as the 200 people who came to the meeting I had the honour of hosting in Battle River-Crowfoot on July 10.

Events like this have been happening across the country with great success. It shows the Conservative Party of Canada is a strong, cohesive team ready to secure our country’s future.

Erin O’Toole’s willingness to meet constituents, answer the tough questions, and listen to the concerns of attendees shows he is ready to lead Canada into an era of prosperity and unity. It also gave a chance to show the leader of the opposition to see the consequences of the developing drought.

It is an honour to represent a constituency that hosts the best agriculture growers and producers in the world. With my Conservative colleagues, I am working to ensure our farmers can weather the storm.

Hail decimates crops in south Concerts return to Sedgewick parts of Flagstaff County Leslie Cholowsky Editor

A severe hail storm roared through the southern edges of Flagstaff County last week, decimating crops, damaging buildings, and shredding gardens, in the area south of Alliance.

While the storm brought much-needed

precipitation to the area, dropping 6.7mm on Thursday, it also brought hail and driving winds.

Environment Canada issued warnings about three storms on Thursday afternoon, warning that these storms were capable of producing ‘tooniesized hail.’ One of these storms was initially located 10km east of Stet-

tler.

Parts of central Alberta were also under tornado watches from these storms.

Wind gusts reached 91km/hour in Alliance, according to Environment Canada, as well as at Gooseberry Lake.

The Coronation region saw gusts around 81 km/hr.

Faith Column: Rooted in Jesus I was reading the Gospel of John the other day, John 15:1-8 to be precise, in which Jesus is the self-proclaimed vine and we are the branches. What a great metaphor it is when you think of it.

Then I thought, you don't see many naturally occurring vines in this area. What could I substitute in place of a vine here in Hardisty? As I gazed out into my back yard, my neighbour’s Blue Spruce trees caught my eye, and then it occurred to me, a pine tree, of course!

So, let's think of a pine tree and its branches

when Jesus speaks about the vine and its branches.

If you look close at one, new life can be found through the branches.

They extend out from the trunk and display new greenery, not just in the spring, but often throughout the year. A branch may break off or be damaged, but the tree still lives. Given time, a new branch grows. If we are the branches, shouldn't we be sharing new life and vitality as Jesus followers?

Certainly, Jesus meant that what nourishes him nourishes us. If Jesus is

empowered by his connection to God, shouldn't we also be seeking that connection? And how do we make sure we renew that connection with God regularly and faithfully?

By being an active member of a Christian faith community! What holds us together as individuals and as a community is how we are rooted as followers of Jesus Christ.

The Town of Sedgewick announced Monday, July 26, that it will be holding a performance from legendary rock band Streetheart this September.

The community held its last big concert October 2019, with Honeymoon Suite, Prism, and Lee Aaron.

Gord Bamford was scheduled to bring his #Rednek 2020 tour to the stage for the spring of 2020, but cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.

Streetheart is a Canadian band, with its roots in Saskatchewan, and is best know for its hit songs “Here Comes the Night,” “What kind of love is this?”, “One More Time”, and their version of “Under My Thumb.”

Streetheart won a 1980 Juno for ‘Most promising group’ and over the next several decades produced six gold and four platinum records.

The supporting act will be AC/DC tribute band

“Who Made Who.” This band has been around since 2005, touring all of Canada. They boast of having the largest stage production to reproduce the sights and sounds of an actual AC/DC concert.

In their heyday, Street-

heart toured with AC/DC for a time, so this is a perfect match up.

Badry family becomes Flagstaff County’s newest Century Farm family Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Gerard and Lorraine Badry family, including son Matt, his wife Ingrid, and their three children, received an official Alberta Century Farm Award from Jackie Lovely on Tuesday, July 20, at the farm.

The Badry ownership of the home quarter was established in 1921, although Gerard says the family was farming the land a few years prior to receiving the title.

Theodore and Christina Badry moved to the farm from South Dakota, eventually purchasing four quarters in all around the home quarter. They had 16 children, but when Theodore passed away in 1934, the farm hit some hard times.

One of their sons, Gerard’s father Joseph Badry, saved the land from going up for sale, Gerard says, convincing creditors to give him a chance to turn things around.

Turn things around he did, as Joseph and his wife Helen settled in. They con-

tinued the tradition of having a large family, with 18 children, although they lost three at very young ages.

Eventually Joseph’s sons Gerard, Bernard, and Myron took over the dayto-day farming operation in 1978, with Joseph helping as much as possible until he retired.

The size of the farm grew over the years, and in 2013, the farm was split with each brother going their own way. Bernard, and Myron, each with their families, still actively farm.

Gerard stayed on the home quarter.

Gerard and Lorraine have seven children, and their youngest, son Matthew, returned to the farm after attending college and university.

Matthew is married to Ingrid, and they have three children, Maria, Dylan, and Corwin.

Both Gerard and Lorraine and Matt and Ingrid live on the home quarter, where there are two houses side by side.

It's been a busy week for the Community Church of the Nazarene in Sedgewick.

Forty-three kids participated throughout the week for vacation bible school. This year's topic was “Bug Safari.” Of course this wouldn't be possible without all the dedicated volunteers, so thank you to everyone who helped put it on. Over $1,700 was raised for Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. Thanks to all the families who contributed for such an amazing result.

The family once had pigs and dairy cows, in fact Joseph built a large barn in 1958 to house them.

In the early ‘60s, the Badrys got a contract to sell milk, and sold the pigs off. For years their milk went to Dutch Dairies in Bashaw.

Gerard says the farm had up to 80 dairy cows at one time, until they sold them off in 1994, and concentrated on grain farming.

The Badry family is planning a big celebration of the farm’s new Century status on the August long weekend.

Lovely says she genuinely enjoys the privilege of making the Century Farm presentations, adding, “It takes many, many hands and generations to earn this award.”

Hello folks, as farmers we were ecstatic to get a half inch of rain on our rain gauge from last night. For many farmers it is too-little too-late.

We drove to Camrose yesterday and the farther west you drove, the better the crops looked.

They were lucky to get the rain.

The Snowbirds put on

an excellent show over the skies of Camrose. We enjoyed the free show and everywhere you looked people were in chairs staring at the sky and in awe. I have never experienced those jets so close to the ground. What a noise, but what an experience!

I had a chat with the Lake Warden of Hardisty Campground the other day. She is Penny Wurz’s sister Shannon. This is her sixth year of being our warden and she does a bang-up job. she is

pleased that their online reservations are so successful and they get so many compliments and repeat reservations. We are so lucky to have this little bit of heaven. We have many families and also oilfield workers, so the noise level is kept at a dull roar. There’s no noise after 11 p.m.

Remember swimming lessons are coming up starting Aug. 9 and again on the week of Aug. 16.

Well, the smoke has cleared somewhat and I am on a road trip out to BC. My little van runs great and I'm making good connections with friends and family.

My first stop was in Brooks to visit Deb and her family, Stuart and Candice Nichols, the oldest granddaughter and her husband, and my two oldest great-grandchildren Lucas and Nicole.

From there I went to Strathmore to visit the youngest daughter, then on to Calgary where I had a visit with Mary and Lori Lockwood.

I was at my first cousins’ dinner in Calgary on Wednesday evening, there were seven of us there for dinner at Ricci's All Day Grill in Northwest Calgary.

Thursday was a day at Callaway Park, I hadn't been there for years. I didn't do the roller coaster, it just didn't seem to appeal to me like it used to when I was a kid.

I did like the bumper boats with their squirt guns on the front, but so did some little girls who were standing on the wharf and they just targeted me to soak me something awful. It was a

hot day so it was lots of fun and I will admit that I started it.

At Golden one of the friends I met up with was Doreen Kelly, who is a cousin to the Blumhagens here. Doreen came out a few years ago and did a demonstration for the Women’s Institute on how she crochets Tartan afghans. On this visit she was working on a picture blanket with 20 different colours of wool, all attached at the same time.

It was really intriguing. I want to try one, but with less colours.

In Enderby I visited with Sandra Krause. Sandra is one of Grace and Dan Reister's daughters.

My long-time friend Ruth joined us for dinner. Ruth has a lovely cabin on top of the mountain by Mabel Lake, but she had to abandon her cabin because of the threat of the fire. There really wasn't any more smoke than we have had at home and most days there was some sunshine coming through, even a little bit of blue sky.

My end-destination was my brother's house at the lake at Scotch Creek. Ron, the other brother will be up to join us today.

I will be heading home tomorrow and I'll be home by the time you read this.

New Emergency Services Regional Manager ready to move FRESS forward Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Derek Homme is the new Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS) Regional Manager. Homme officially started at the beginning of July, and has a lot of work ahead as the society moves forward.

Homme says he was raised on the family farm near Hythe, Alberta, and started on his career path quite early.

Before attending University, he was a lifeguard at the local pool, and he also served as a volunteer firefighter for the Hythe Fire Department.

He originally wanted to pursue a career in recreation management, taking that schooling, but was also interested in the family farm.

As he continued to work as a firefighter, he became interested in EMT training, and has his EMR certification.

FireMaster recruited him in 2001, where he oversaw Firemaster’s Canadian operations.

Homme then moved to the safety side of things, working on that side of the industry for over three years, until he saw the posting for FRESS, and decided to apply. He says, “I felt that I ticked all the boxes.”

FRESS President and Chair Debra Smith says that Homme was one of a field of 35 candidates that was narrowed down to 12, then six, then two.

Homme went through three different interviews for the position.

Another plus is that his daughter, who is in oilfield sales, is very familiar with Flagstaff County, as it’s part of her territory, so he feels comfortable in the region.

Homme says that he’s looking forward to moving here permanently, as he is an avid golfer and curler, and has even served on a ski patrol.

“I feel very fortunate to be awarded the position. I’ve had many different experiences in the fire services field, and I hope to bring a fresh perspective.”

Homme is in the middle of meeting all the region’s fire chiefs and station tours.

“I want to hear directly from them, what are their thoughts and concerns, and what their departmental needs are.”

Homme is presently working out of the Flagstaff County Administration building in Sedgewick, where FRESS has contracted the use of an office and associated services from Flagstaff County, but he is employed by the Society.

“The board has empowered me to build FRESS from the ground up,” he says.

He’s already secured a domain name for the Society’s future web page, Flagstaff-ress.org, where he hopes to

provide regular updates on the progress of the society.

Smith says, “This is a long-term plan that has been years in the making.”

Under the proposed regional fire services, the society as a whole will be responsible for training, for equipment, and for providing fire services to each municipality in Flagstaff County.

“We can take comfort that fire services is being removed from politics,” says Smith, with the emphasis shifting to providing consistent fire services throughout the region, and capitalizing on savings by providing the service regionally.

Smith says that most residents won’t even notice the change.

Homme says, “This is for long-term fire service. It won’t look any different from the day before we go operational to the day after.

“Our long term goal is borderless response, and to have all Flagstaff firefighters have the opportunity to train together, to learn together. There’s no more ‘us’ vs. ‘them.’

“FRESS will ensure that we can send the right people to the right place right away.”

Homme talked a little about recruitment and volunteers, and he notes, “Not all who volunteer to serve on the fire department need to be willing to face hazards head on.

“We need fit, trained firefighters willing do to that, sure, but there are other things people can do that don’t put them in the line of hazards.”

The final agreement that each municipality has, in principal, already agreed to, is presently being reviewed by legal council.

Homme says there’s a lot of work ahead, as he learns about the unique identities of each station in the region.

The Society is a not-for-profit group, that will be eligible for grants not presently available to municipalities.

Homme says that many of the region’s departments already have “Friends of” municipal fire departments who do fundraising and even work casinos for new equipment.

“We will still need that to continue, although it may look different under one Society.”

Homme says there’s no reason that communities who raise funds for their fire department to stop, as those funds can still be directed to a local department.

Smith adds, “We know that money isn’t infinite. The basis for creating a regional service was to have an effective, efficient, economical, and equitable fire service.”

Homme says one of the big sticklers was that each fire department retain their identity, and there are no plans to change that. “At present, we will add

Homme says his goal is to give every fire department in the region an opportunity to succeed, with all the support required to make that happen.

“Each station will retain its leadership and firefighters.”

He says that with any fire department, the service level depends on the engagement of its members.

“A one-truck fire hall can do as well as a large hall. The size of the community doesn’t matter.”

By offering support through the Society, he’s confident that every department will have access to the resources it needs.

Smith and Homme say that COVID brought some unique opportunities to

firefighters. “Where before firefighters had to commit to long training sessions on weekends, taking them away from family and other commitments, through COVID, online training was developed, and it’s now a viable option for rural fire fighters. That opens things up.”

Homme says the next step is a period of observation and analysis. He hopes to get past the first stumbling block through clear communications, especially when it comes to fire halls.

“There’s no plans to close any fire hall.”

Smith says, “FRESS is looking forward to uniting and stabilizing fire services throughout Flagstaff County.

“FRESS is one more entity where we work together as a region for the good of the entire region.”

Canadian women bringing it at Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Canada scored its first gold medal at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on Sunday, July 25, when Margaret Mac Neil came out ahead in the 100m butterfly swim event.

A second gold came overnight Monday with Maude Charron’s weightlifting gold.

Canada also has three silver medals.

The first came Saturday, July 24, from Kayla Sanchez, Margaret Mac Neil, Rebecca Smith, and Penny Oleksiak in the 4x100m swimming relay, including heat swimmer Taylor Ruck. Oleksiak is only the third Canadian to win five medals at the Olympics.

Canada’s second silver medal came

from Jennifer Abel and Mélissa Citrini-Beaulieu in Women’s 3m Synchro Springboard diving.

Monday evening saw Kylie Masse in the Women’s 100m backstroke win Canada’s third Silver.

Canada now also has 3 Bronze medals. The first was won by Jessica Klimkait in Judo. She has become the first Canadian woman to medal in the sport. Her teammate Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard took a second Bronze in Judo Monday night.

The Canadian Women’s Softball team also won Bronze Monday.

Canada has 370 athletes competing in this year’s games, which started with the opening ceremony on Friday, July 23, and will end Sunday, Aug. 8, at the closing ceremony.

Local gymnasts participate in Flip Flop Fun meet Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Wainwright Gymnastics Club held their Flip Flop Fun meet on Saturday, July 24, to give their gymnasts a chance to perform for judges and for their families.

Parents have not set foot in the gym since March 2020, so there were a lot of smiles all around, from gymnasts and parents alike. This last yearand-a-half has been some interesting times for the sport of gymnastics.

There are four young gymnasts from Flagstaff County who train with the Wainwright Club.

These are Lexianna and Naveena Schmidt from Hardisty, and Raine and Aurora Burden from Lougheed.

The Schmidt girls are working on their Level 1 skills, with Aurora now working on Level 2 skills, and Raine at Level 5.

Training will continue in August, with a new season starting this fall.

All four will compete with the team starting in January 2022 in various meets.

Sodbuster Museum opens doors this summer Leslie Cholowsky Editor

After remaining closed throughout 2020 due to Alberta Health restrictions arising from COVID-19, the Sodbusters Museum in Strome has reopened this summer, welcoming the public every Thursday and Friday through July and August.

Board Chair Pat Curtis says initially the board felt that it might be too late to return to operations this summer, but when board member Joyce Dalueg offered to work, they decided to go for it.

Dalueg and Curtis say that while the by-donation entrance fee doesn’t bring in big dollars each summer, it certainly helps.

They say the board is grateful for the financial support received from its loyal sponsors, and from the Strome Ag. Society.

The Sodbusters Museum covers three large buildings, and utilities, even though the heat is minimal in the winter, still represents money going out.

The museum board is hoping that reopening will attract visitors from around the region,

and perhaps kindle some interest in joining the board. “We need some new volunteers,” Curtis and Dalueg say.

The one thing the museum doesn’t need, at the moment, is any more items.

Originally started in the hall, a new building was built in the ‘90s, when the collection grew thanks to an addition from another museum collection near Coutts.

Then the store next to the new building was also incorporated, and the museum now spreads across three large buildings.

Thanks to the huge amount of space, the museum is able to house a number of displays that recreate items from Strome’s history, including the first jail cell, a trappers cabin, a typical homestead kitchen and bathroom.

Dalueg says that recent visitors from Calgary made mention of how clean the displays all are, even the blacksmith display.

The sheer quantity of items on display generally means that everyone will find something interesting to see.

The museum also houses collections that commemorate former clubs and groups that no longer exist, along with a fire hall display, a post office display, and a railway office display. Each of these gives a glimpse into a bustling and thriving community.

Strome hosts one of Flagstaff County’s five unique museums. Others can be found in Lougheed, where the Iron Creek Museum maintains a number of old buildings on display, including a grain elevator; the Alliance Museum, which is home to a special doll collection that has to be seen to be believed, as well as relics from the past; the Forestburg Museum, where displays are ever-chang-

ing, often themed, and always interesting.

Sedgewick is home to the Sedgewick Archives Gallery, housed in the old Bank of Montreal building, and also the Goose Creek School house.

Flagstaff also boasts an outdoors museum, at the Diplomat Mine Interpretive site near Forestburg.

In every Flagstaff Museum, you will find passionate volunteers who have worked hard to preserve the history of the area, and built unique, interesting displays that are worth a closer look.

Flagstaff Scottish Club – Highland Festival Funding Request Council approved a motion that Flagstaff County suggest the Flagstaff Scottish Club seek the County’s recreation grant funding through the Flagstaff Region Agricultural Societies.

Request for Cancellation of Tax Penalty Council approved a motion to respectfully deny the request for the cancellation of penalty levied on Roll 620000 in the amount of $335.71.

Killam and District Health Care Foundation – Seniors Tailored Living Project Council approved a motion to support the Killam Health Care Centre and Covenant Health with their Seed Funding application to Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation (CMHC), to explore and plan for the development of the Seniors Tailored Living complex in Killam.

Programs and Services Priorities Council approved a motion that the Programs and Services Priorities be approved as presented for the 2022-2024 Business Plan and 2022 Budget.

OBITUARY

Ida Cornelia Vincett

Our mother, Ida Cornelia Vincett, was born in the St Joseph’s Hospital in Galahad, Alberta, on February 2, 1929. She was the first of two children born to Onno Jan and Hilda van Griethuizen.

She and her brother, Peter were very close and attended the Norwood School from Grades 1 to 9. In June 1939, her father Onno Jan passed away suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 44.

She learned at a young age the workings of farm life by milking cows, raising chickens, turkeys, and hogs plus tending garden.

Mom attended Central High School in Sedgewick by catching a bus on Hwy 36 on Monday mornings. She stayed at the dormitory during the week and came home every weekend to help out on the farm.

After completing Grade 12, she worked as a sales clerk for Ivor Fossen’s General Store in Forestburg for three years.

On April 17, 1954, she married Walter Vincett of Galahad and together they ran a mixed farm.

They began life together

in a two roomed house and eventually needed to build a new home that was completed in 1959.

They had five children.

Howard, Cathy, Ken, Marvin, and Joyce. Marvin passed away suddenly in April 1970 in a farm accident.

She raised chickens for laying and butchering and ran her own business called the Quality Egg Farm. Year round, the eggs were sold to the neighbours, restaurants, stores, local hospital, and motel. Summer holidays in July were spent butchering and selling fresh chicken. We milked cows and she collected the cream to sell to the creamery in Sedgewick and Donalda in exchange for fresh butter and cheese on the table.

Mom made time for the Galahad Hospital Auxiliary and the Women’s Missionary Society. She learned to ski in the early ‘70s and that gave our family a sport to enjoy on our weekends at the Valley Ski Club.

Our parents enrolled all us kids into the Hastings Coulee 4-H Beef Club. She became a member of the Killam Ladies Bowling League, and later a member of the Galahad Floor Curling club and the Galahad Senior Citizens Friendship club. All the community involvement gave mom lifelong friends and a chance to visit our neighbors.

Mom was always home and she was reliable and steady, organized and

busy. She was a hard worker and could magically get it all done. She was a wonderful grandmother who showed her grandkids the skills of gardening during the summer.

Vacations were challenging to get away, but our parents did eventually go to Holland to visit many of Mom’s cousins.

She loved that trip to experience Europe and realize that she had many connections with her own relations. She went again to Holland in 1994, this time with her daughter Cathy. They had a great time. She also flew to the West coast to visit Joyce’s family in Coquitlam, BC. Mom and Dad did smaller drives around Flagstaff County and usually ended up stopping to visit one of Dad’s siblings, friends, or neighbours along the way. Walter passed away January 2001 and mom continued on the farm and eventually Uncle Peter moved in with her until he passed away November 2005.

Mom’s next move was to the Forestburg Villa, from 2009 until 2014, and then to the Galahad Care Centre until June 1, 2021.

She passed peacefully on Monday evening July 19, 2021, in the Hardisty Care Centre. Mom was completely deaf and she had learned to hear by reading your faces and watching body language.

She was a strong, loving and caring person. She was quiet, reserved, and worked hard.

Mom passed away peacefully in the Hardisty Care Centre on July 19, 2021, at the age of 92 years. She is survived by two sons Howard (Cindy) Vincett, and Ken (Nicki) Vincett of Galahad, Alberta; two daughters Catherine (Calvin) Patterson of Edmonton and Joyce (Russell) Watts of Coquitlam, BC, five grandchildren; Evan (Andra-Lynn) Vincett, Steven Vincett, Dylan Vincett, Melissa Watts, Matthew Watts; two step -grandsons David Sanche, Brad Sanche; three great-grandchildren Wyatt, Julia, and Owen Vincett; one sister-in-law Mil Vincett, one brotherin-law Richard Vincett, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased

Clarification ILS program changes Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Flagstaff Family and Community Services (FFCS) will not be directly impacted by the upcoming changes to the delivery of the Independent Living Skills (ILS) program, also known as the Assertive Outreach program. (“Flagstaff communities, like Beaver, losing ILS worker”The Community Press, July 14-21), says Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson.

“This is not an FFCS program and we will not be losing an outreach program.

“The community will be losing this program as it is designed today and it will be offered by Alberta Health Services (AHS) in a new way, which is used across the entire province.

“It has always been funded by AHS but for 20 years they have contracted it out in this area to the Canadian Mental Health Association and it has been run as a community program by a community agency.

“It will now be an AHSrun program with a bureaucratic structure.”

Jenkinson says it’s hard to determine at this point how this will affect local ILS clients. “I know they have been given a letter and told to phone a number to be signed up to the new program.”

She expresses some worries that this type of ‘self-registration’ leaves everything to the client.

She’s also concerned that without local delivery, access to the program for those in both Flagstaff and Beaver counties may be impacted, especially if the client doesn’t have access to transportation.

She says, “I will give AHS a chance, but also, this client list is different, because it only delivers services to those that they can diagnose with a mental illness.

“This will not cover stress, grief, or many traumas that do not have a mental health diagnosis attached.”

She says other providers in the community system will be the ones to try to

fill these new gaps in services.

“Essentially this is downloading to the community systems in place to fill any gaps.”

Jenkinson adds, “I, as FFCS Executive director, will track client needs in our area, and track clients who come in and why they come in.

“When and if I see a need increasing because of the change in this program, I will have my Board address the issue with AHS, whether through a direct letter to the AHS Board, or through the communication system with AHS. “We will not let clients drop through the cracks, and the cracks are becoming much larger as we deal with Provincial and Federal budget issues brought on by the demands of the pandemic.”

She adds, “Canadian Mental Health and now redundant worker Donna Tindally delivered the previous program faithfully and well, and deserve their due for serving the community.”

RCMP warn that fraud is on the rise in Alberta Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam RCMP Detachment is presently warning residents that fraud is on the rise in Alberta.

In the past year, from March 2020 to February 2021, there have been over 10,700 reports of fraud to Alberta RCMP, and likely many more attempts not reported.

That’s over 29 cases of fraud every day in this province.

Nearly 20 per cent of fraud cases in Alberta involve identity theft and impersonation. These include frauds where victims disclose bank account information, credit card information, and essential personal information like birthdates and social insurance numbers.

The top 10 charges related to frauds in Alberta are: Money, property, and security fraud of $5,000 or less; Identity Fraud;

money, property, and security fraud over $5,000; identity theft; theft, forgery, or misuse of credit cards; using, selling, or possessing a forged document; illegally trafficking or possessing government documents; obtaining food or lodging by fraud; obtaining transportation by fraud; and unauthorized use of computer accounts.

RCMP have some key messages to consider to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

• Does this transaction make sense? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

•Ignore communication from unknown contacts.

•Don’t leave personal identification cards, like drivers licences, in your vehicle.

•Purchase items from reputable organizations.

•Research organizations via the Better Business Bureau.

•Regularly monitor credit card statements for

unknown or suspicious charges.

•Never send money on a dating site.

It’s also good to be aware that the RCMP and Revenue Canada will never asks for deposits in Bitcoin machines, iTunes cards, or Apple Play cards.

RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to police. Unfortunately, not all fraudsters are operating via telephone or email, sometimes it’s happening right in our community.

Cst. Nicholas Daigle, acting supervisor at the Killam Detachment says, “Reports tell us where to look, who to look for, and where to patrol in the future.”

Nationally, in 2021 so far, Canadians have reported 40,341 instances of fraud, with 28,517 victims, who lost a total of $105.4 million. That’s just half a year, and almost at 2020’s total of $106 million already.

With the high temperatures, no appreciable snow runoff this spring and little rain, you should be aware of changes to surface water quality and its effects on livestock.

Cattle have been known to have died when their sole water source has very high levels of sulfates and cases of refusing to drink poor water are not unknown. There are no problem with sulfate levels below 500 ppm. However, some surface water sources can have much higher rates than that. This is a separate consideration from blue-green algae.

At levels about 500 ppm animals may refuse to drink water with high sulfates. Levels can exceed 3000 ppm, causing problems. If high enough, cattle will refuse to drink the water until desperate. That leads to reduced water intake or taking fewer, but deeper drinks, when they do. If they are extremely thirsty they can fill up with 30 gallons of water. Don’t use the appearance of the water as an indicator of quality. Water tests can give you much better information.

Poor water leads to reduced intake and this can lead to reduced forage and feed consumption. In milking cows that means less milk, poorer calf weaning weights, cow weight loss and potentially, lower cow fertility.

The problem with high sulfates is that they interfere with the animal’s uptake of copper. If a severe copper shortage results, you can get polio in the cattle. Symptoms of polio include blindness, lethargy, skinny cows, muscle tremors, staggering, weakness, head pressing and eventual convulsions and an inability to get up. In the Northeast part of Alberta we have experience some losses due to this in past dry years.

Your local vet can treat an animal with polio but you really should be keeping track of the water quality, especially when drought and short water supplies are the case.

Things can be helped a bit by using high copper/zinc trace mineral salt blocks on pasture but it isn’t a solution to high sulfates.

High total dissolved solids can be a problem too, leading to poor animal performance, diarrhea and problems with lactating cows.

If your water sources are dugouts, you might want to consider developing on-site, remote watering systems.

There are a lot of different ways of restricting livestock access and improving water quality. It does limit the added phosphates livestock deposit when defecating in their water source.

Water is the single biggest nutrient an animal consumes.

Water quality is important for livestock health and productivity.

If you have the least doubt about water quality, consider getting a water sample then sending it off for analysis to any number of labs in Alberta for analysis.
