Visitors to Hardisty over the weekend from Friday, July 16, to Sunday, July 18, were ready to celebrate, starting with a very successful Street Fair on Friday to a packed house for Saturday and Sunday rodeo events. The smoky skies didn’t deter the crowds, at one of the area’s first big events to start up after the province declared Alberta ‘Open for Summer’ on July 1. The Hardisty Rodeo Association had the grounds in tip-top shape for this year’s event. The entire event, from street fair to combine crunch, takes an incredible commitment from many hard-working volunteers, and drew a big crowd into the Flagstaff region this weekend for some long-awaited entertainment. Lakeland Rodeo contestants did their best to entertain, with a number of local names on the program. The Bull Riding event saw the bulls come out ahead, with not a single finisher, although one came within a hair’s breadth of six seconds. Keaton Martz

from Forestburg was one of the local competitors in this event. Steer Wrestling saw Czar’s Dayton Roworth come in third place, with a time of 7.4 seconds. Ladies Barrel racing featured Kaitlin Haeberle of Viking and Shiela Chamulke of Bruce, unfortunately neither placed in the top six this time out. Team Roping saw Dayton Roworth and Cole Flad of Czar place sixth, with a time of 17.8. Two teams from Viking, Cash and Bill Littau, and Kevin Heaberle with Bruce’s Chris Chomik, competed but didn’t make it to the top five. Strome’s Levi Robbins rode in the Junior Steer riding, but didn’t finish in the top six this time around. In the Junior Barrell Racing, Hardisty’s own Reegan Dempsey competed, along with Daysland Jayda Songhurst. Songhurst came in third with a time of 18.877. Top Bareback was Colton Oulette on Peco Bill with a score of 72, coming in second was Keagan Elder on Mackinaw, with a 70. In Saddle Bronc finish, Dyllan Duperron rode Baton Rouge to a win with 71.5

points, with Wyatt Simpson on Domestic Shadow placing second with 70, and Jake Henry riding Stones for a 67. Steer Wrestling saw Lance Fraser out like a rocket with a time of 5.2, with Kagen Schmidt close behind at 5.8. Austin Young won the Calf Roping with a 9.2 overall, with Koby Ziemmer coming a close second with a 9.3, and third-place Darren Zieffle from Consort just a little behind at 9.6 for third place. Team Roping saw Kyle Wanchuk and Heston Zack finish first with a 6.9, with Travis Reay and Glen Allan Nash coming in second at 7.2. Landin Warren and Cole Warren finished close behind in third place with a 7.5. The top three in Ladies Barrel Racing were hundredths of a second apart, with Halley  Bedwell finishing first with 18.221, Aimee Cripps a close second with 18.252, and Amara Duxbury in third place at 18.376. Garret Zieffle from Consort rode Sky High in Novice Horse Riding for the win. Junior Steer Riding saw Kane Scott finish with a 67.5, with Nash Loewen close behind with a 66.5, and Kahl Wasilow and Brody Bandurka tied for

third at 65 apiece. The Junior Barrel racers weren’t far behind the ladies, with Hanna Anderson finishing first at 18.382, Amy Naismith second with 18.536, and Jayda Songhurst in third with 18.877. Lakeland Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls will be in Viking next week for the Cloverlodge Rodeo, with some locals slugging it out again. Sunday will see Viking’s Nathan Carter in Bull Riding, and Czar’s Dayton Roworth in the Steer Wrestling. Sunday will also see Strome’s Levi Robbins in Junior Steer Riding, along with Kegan Miller of Viking. Sunday’s Junior Barrel racing will see Daysland’s Jayda Songhurst return, along with Sydney Miller from Viking. Saturday’s Ladies Barrel Racing will see Chelsea Cumming from Viking compete, while Sunday will bring Kaitlin Haeberle from Viking. Sunday’s Bull Riding event will feature Viking native Nathan Carter. Also on Sunday, Viking’s Cash and Bill Littau will be back in the Team Roping event, along with the team of Chris Chomik of Bruce and Kevin Haeberle of Viking.
