Lamont Town Council held its first virtual oath of office when councillor Perry Koroluk was sworn in as the new deputy mayor of Lamont during an online council meeting on Jun. 23. The position of deputy mayor is a rotating position being appointed every eight months by Mayor Bill Skinner.

In keeping with health regulations during the COVID 19 pandemic,

Councillor Perry Koroluk took the oath of office in accepting the rotating position of deputy mayor on June 23, during an online Zoom regular meeting of council.

“This is our first time doing this in a

virtual manner,” said Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner. “The process was necessary because it was physically unsafe to do this together.”

Lamont Town Council is made up of seven elected council members includ-

ing the mayor, and all serve a four-year term.

The position of deputy mayor is a rotating position that is appointed every eight months with a new member of council chosen by the mayor.

RCMP efforts lead to drug and gun arrests in Lamont County

BY JOHN MATHER Multiple RCMP detachments took part in an investigation that led to the arrest of three persons at a home on northern Lamont County.

The collaborated efforts of Wood Buffalo Drug Section, Two Hills Detachment, Emergency Response Team – North, Eastern Alberta District General Investigation Section and Smoky Lake Detachment resulted in the execution of multiple warrants on June 22 at about 10:30 a.m.

Three persons were arrested on outstanding warrants, two adult males and one adult female. Police observations made during the execution of these warrants resulted in the scene being secured and an additional search warrant sought. The search warrant was granted, executed and resulted in a handgun, ammunition and drugs

being seized by police.

Jeffrey Derrick Hefferan, 31, and Daphanie Carol Lee Kreutzer, 25, both of Wood Buffalo: and another adult male from Alberta, have all been charged with: • Possession of a prohibited firearm, • Possession of prohibited ammunition, • Unsafe storage of a firearm, • Unsafe storage of ammunition, • Possession for dangerous purpose, • Possession of stolen property under $5,000, and • Possession of a controlled substance – cocaine.

Hefferan has also been charged with the additional charge of breaching a prohibition order.

Both Hefferan and Kreutzer have been remanded and remain in custody awaiting a judicial hearing.

Mundare councillor Burghardt calls it quits, no reason specified

BY JOHN MATHER Nine year Mundare council veteran Jaime Burghardt has resigned her council seat effective June 15.

“We will have to have a by-election,” chief administrative officer Colin Zyla told council at the June 23 council meeting.

“We have less than six councillors and it is more than six months to the next election.”

He said council could send a letter to municipal affairs asking to hold off on having the by-election, but he didn’t know whether it would be granted or not.

He pointed out several

changes which have been instituted since the municipal act was

changed. He told council, while he was the returning officer for the

by-election, the town would have to appoint a deputy returning officer and he suggested Lisa Elschuk be named as the DRO. Council passed a motion to hold the election on September 9 and Elschuk be appointed DRO. Councillor Irene Talaga made a motion that council accept with regret Burghardt’s resignation.

“She made many contributions to the community over her terms on council and we wish her all the best in the future,” said Mayor Mike Saric.

No reasons were stated for the resignation.

The IDP: 1. includes information about the community history and current demographics: 2. includes updated mapping information to reflect the IDP area boundary, and identify areas with development constraints; 3. identifies preferred future land use areas for residential, public,commercial and industrial land uses; 4. establishes high level land use and land management goals and objectives; 5. establishes triggers for when the County will require the preparation and approval of an Area Structure Plan or Outline Plan/Development Concept Plan; 6. establishes policies affecting: • Municipal Reserve allocation; • development in environmentally sensitive areas; • development of infrastructure and transportation systems; 7. establishes a policy which will require developers to be responsible for infrastructure costs associated with new development.

Fire crews attended a structure fire in Lamont on Jun. 27. Although no injuries were reported there was significant damage to the partially finished basement.

Partially finished basement goes up in flames

BY JANA SEMENIUK A Lamont resident, away from his home overnight, contacted emergency services upon returning home and discovering a fire had burned in his basement during the early morning hours of June 27.

Fire crews received a call of a structure fire at approximately 8 a.m. on June 27. Units from the Lamont fire department and Bruderheim responded as well as an ambulance.

Lamont fire chief Scott Calder explained the fire had burned itself out inside the partially finished basement by the time fire crews arrived.

“We met the owner outside and he let us know there was a fire in the basement,” he said.

Although the fire was out by the time crews arrived, Calder noted there was significant damage to the basement.

Fire crews attended the scene for approximately three hours ensuring that

all was safe and secure.

Calder added that he was grateful for the happy ending.

“When you get a call for a structure fire you always think the worst,” he said. “Thankfully the building is still intact and no one was hurt.”

Calder included that there was no indication how the fire started or whether the home owner’s insurance company would be investigating.

Opinion Canadian flag’s meaning Two newspapers in Atlantic Canada printed Canadian flags as a centre spread so that subscribers could pull them out and put them on their windows for Canada Day. Nice eh?

Well, you’d think so. But nothing these days can be a simple lovely gesture without someone picking it apart and finding fault with it. So the newspapers found it important enough to place trigger-warnings on their front pages so that the image of the Canadian flag didn’t offend someone. “… we understand that the flag doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone…”

Really?

Canada’s flag was changed in 1965 to the maple leaf for the purpose of inclusion and unity. That’s what the flag represents, and yes it should mean the same to everyone.

But is this what we have become? Are we now a society of victims sniffing around for literally anything that remotely offends us? Must our businesses all placate to this crazed mob of victimhood?

I am proud to be Canadian. I am proud of our ancestors who fought for this country. I am proud of our history of peacekeeping, and our young military personnel who fought for our freedoms and won.

I am proud that our land is populated by both natives and immigrants from other nations who came here to raise their families with the hope of a better life. Their hard work paved the way for our civilization and continues to do so.

I am proud of our flag. To me it means we live in a land of freedom, human rights, and justice for all. No, Canada is not perfect. Neither are the people who live here. Not you, not me, and neither were our ancestors.

Our flag is like our national anthem. I have seen better flags and have heard better anthems. But our maple leaf flag and O’ Canada are ours uniquely. They represent us all as a community of 35 million people of every thinkable ancestry who live mostly in peace and harmony.

In 1965, after nearly a hundred years of using the Canadian Red Ensign as our flag, Prime Minister Pearson fought like mad to bring the new maple leaf design to Canadians.

The year prior, wearing his two WWI medals of honour, PM Pearson gave an impassioned speech in Winnipeg to legion members who fought in two World Wars under the Red Ensign. Pearson talked about pride, patriotism and service to country but also pleaded that Canada needs a flag that is relevant to all Canadians, not just those of British descent.

So to me, this remains the meaning of the maple leaf.

Unity, not division. No trigger-warning necessary for this Canadian.

We don’t need the likes of Sir John A. MacDonald, Frank Oliver, Dan Knott, Emily Murphy, Henry Dundas et al!

Happy Canada Day! Why are we celebrating anyway?

Remember … we don’t like our history!

If we adopt the new standards we shouldn’t ever have Canada Day again.

FROM WHERE I SIT: Stew of Snippets

BY HAZEL ANAKA It’s probably high time for a stew of snippets that will never grow into dedicated columns of their own. That is the only thread linking these items.

• It’s been years since we sold our herd of cows and I’ve no shortage of memories of how hard, labour-intensive, and maddening being a cattle farmer can be. Keeping fences in good repair, ensuring enough feed 365 days a year, providing bedding and shelter in winter, assisting difficult births, being at the mercy of the markets, vaccinations and treatment of disease are just some. Chasing a wily and determined cow in circles around a bale feeder was always fun; not. Losing an animal to disease, predator, or fate was especially hard on emotions and the bottom line. And yet, when I see calves in a pasture, I feel a pang of nostalgia.

There’s nothing much cuter than plump calves

running and kicking up their heels or nursing at their mothers’ sides.

They’ve lost the gangly, unsteady, awkward newborn look. They restore my faith in nature’s life cycle.

• This year I doubled down on my container veggie gardening because saving money, avoiding the stores, and eating the fruits of my own labour seemed prudent in the time of Covid. Buying two additional planters, hundreds of litres of potting soil, and seed packets got me going. Lessons learned last year were implemented as I seeded. Then the rains came. And came and came. Despite having built-in spigots to drain any water saturating the planters, everything looks pretty pathetic at this point.

Like any true farmer, I’m not giving up yet but I am concerned about wasting time and money on a losing cause.

And that’s a teenyweeny investment of time and money compared to what’s playing out in fields across the province. OMG. Is there any farmer who’s been able to seed all his cultivated acres? Of the seeded acres, how much yield will be lost to rot or disease or getting choked out by weeds because of difficulties spraying or delays in the growth cycle? For the past four or five years many of us got caught when good harvest weather ran out before the crop was

ready and harvest was completed. We still have wheat lying in swaths from 2019 on a piece too wet to work up never mind combine.

Honestly, it makes me wonder why anyone chooses this lifestyle.

Isn’t the definition of insanity “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”? Imagine support groups where one after another, farmers stand up and say “My name is Whatever and I’m a Farmer.” Heads would nod in support and understanding.

Desperate middle of the night calls to a sponsor would happen as the Farmer toyed with the idea of buying a new piece of machinery or breaking up more acreage. Pithy slogans like One Day at a Time, First Things First, Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes, Let Go and Let God, and Progress, Not Perfection would support the twelve steps to recovery.

• We had a guy over to offer suggestions and a quote for installing concrete curbing around trees and flowerbeds. At this point in our lives we want an attractive yet pared down look that seriously cuts down on the time and effort required to maintain it.

We essentially have two choices. Delay the entire job another year to allow more time for the earth to settle around the foundation, have Roy build the steps, and a new

patio go in. Or do the project in two phases: the established, no-brainer areas now and the aforementioned settling, steps and patio areas later.

I want the two phases option. I think it’s high time we saw some progress. If ever we had the time to devote to yard work, it’s this lockdown year. No festival to coordinate for me; far, far fewer County events and conferences for Roy to attend. Plus, we still have a great deal of work to do even if the job is broken down into two phases. The huge land-

scape rocks we stashed away during construction need to come back and be positioned. Think tractor, chains, physics principles, and prayer.

We need to continue killing the vegetation we no longer want so we can consolidate and shrink the size of multiple flowerbeds. We need to think about any new trees and shrubs we want to plant and how we want the yard to function.

Hopefully, we’ve learned some things. We need to remember to include the sightlines and shade we

want, that saplings turn into fifty-footers, that access for septic tank cleaning is essential, that bigger lawn mowers need more turning radius, that we’re not whipper-snipper people.

All this is complicated by the rain, hummingbirdsized mosquitos determined to eat us alive, and the sad truth that each of us would rather do other things. There I said it.

I hope this stew provided some stick-to-theribs value, from where I sit.

First recipients of Harold James Scholarships announced

BY JANA SEMENIUK The first recipients of the Harold James Scholarship were given their awards during an emotional cheque presentation at the Lamont Health Care Centre on Jun. 30.

“Upon my retirement, the board, in their wisdom, decided to honour my name in the form of a scholarship to people who may be interested in pursuing a career in health care,” said retired chief executive officer Harold James. “This is the first of its kind and I’m honoured to present it.”

James, who retired last year after serving the Lamont Health Care Centre for over 40 years as their CEO, was on hand to award the recipients, Jody Jonker, 32, with a cheque for $500, Jade Leismeister, 19, a cheque for $1,000, and Landon Zabel, 19, also a check for $1,000.

Jonker, a current 12year employee with the Lamont Health Care Centre, recently completed a medical device reprocessing course through Perdue University, and is furthering her education with an essential healthcare leadership course through the same online

school.

“I wanted to have a more solid understanding of my role here by taking this course,” said Jonker.

“I’m about halfway through my course now. I was very excited to receive this scholarship.”

Leismeister, is also a current employee with the Lamont Health Care Centre, and is in her first year as a student in the nursing program at Medicine Hat College.

She was grateful to be a recipient of the scholarship award.

“Every little bit helps. I was so excited to find out I was one of the winners of the award. It will really help with the financial burden of school,” she said.

Zabel, a graduate of Lamont High School, is pursuing a career in psychology. He recently completed a semester towards his bachelor of science degree at MacEwan University, a first step towards his goal, and is looking forward to the future.

“I was obviously very excited to get the call that I won this scholarship.

There are quite a few years in school ahead of me but I really love what I’m doing,” he said.

Kent Harrold, the cur-

rent board chair for the Lamont Health Care Centre, was pleased to be a part of the presentation in honour of a man who

has been looked up to by many.

“Harold has been a wonderful example of leadership to this hospi-

tal,” he said. “People will look to our scholarship recipients for leadership and I am happy we have Harold’s example for

guidance.”

The Harold James Scholarship will be awarded annually.

Mundare to further study land use bylaw before passing it

BY JOHN MATHER Mundare has decided to go back and give one more review to the proposed land use by-law after Councillor Irene Talaga said she was concerned about liquor stores being allowed in a highway commercial zoned area.

Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla said the council had passed first reading of the bylaw previously following a public hearing and there had been no objections to the by-law, so he suggested it be passed following second and third readings at council’s June 23 meeting.

“Mr. Mayor I would like to make an amendment to the by-law,” said Talaga.

“Under the Highway Commercial District many businesses are allowed but I feel we have spent a great deal of planning and money on renovating our main street and would like to see our main street filled with commercial business before we do any extension out to the highway.

Zyla asked how she would like to word her amendment.

Talaga replied she wouldn’t want to remove all the discretionary uses because some business like the

gas station were already there. Both Mayor Mike Saric and Zyla said she would have to list the businesses she would like removed from the highway commercial district.

Councillor Jason Kowal asked if any uses could be removed from permitted use and added as discretionary use and he was told this was possible or any businesses could be completely removed from the area.

He was told by Zyla under a discretionary use the business could still go ahead in the area but would have to get approval from surrounding neighbours, but if it was removed completely from the area then it couldn’t proceed whatsoever.

Zyla also pointed out that while a highway commercial district was being created along highway 855, the area along highway 15 south of the downtown was a Service Commercial zoning district. Under it, he explained there could be retail general business or retail alcohol.

“In that case I would ask to remove permitted alcohol completely from the highway commercial,” said Talaga.

“Given that we already have two liquor stores on our main street, I don’t believe the change would make much difference in bringing more business to the downtown because I doubt you’d see a third liquor store wanting to locate there.”

He said the municipal planner for the town had worked with council to provide areas where commercial growth could be fostered.

“There are some businesses that don’t what to be located in the downtown because of their nature,” he said. “A laundromat or gas station would rather be on the highway than downtown and that’s why we’ve put these uses in the bylaw.”

He said businesses along the highway may just be addressing traffic that is stopping as it passes through the town.

Parishioners upset as rural church vandalized

A historical cairn is located at the Star Russo Greek Orthodox Church northeast of Lamont. The marker shows the photo of the first four Ukrainian families who settled in the area in 1894 and built the church four years later.

He said the first Ukrainian families arriving in the County in 1894, settled directly east of where the church stands today at the corner of Township Road 564 and Range Road 192.

He said the RCMP in Fort Saskatchewan have been notified and the investigating officer told him there were at least two people because they left footprints which were photographed.

One, he said, was very visible on the bell tower where the door had been kicked in.

“Our parishioners are

very upset,” he said.

“We’re getting thefts of tools and vehicles in the area.”

Kuzyk said he’s commenting because the community needs to know this is going on.

“People have to know this is going on in the area,” he said. “They have to be vigilant and watch for any strange goings on.

“You see the donuts being burnt out on the highways and hear the trucks racing along the sideroads at night,” he said. “There’s the enthusiasm of youth but sometimes it’s the older ones as well.”

The small, rural Star Russo Greek Orthodox Church was vandalized on June 21, when thieves broke the bell tower doors and used a pry bar to try and gain entrance to the main church. The church at Township Road 564 and Range Road 192 is one of the oldest in the County.

“If their intent was on theft, I really don’t know what these people think they would get,” he said.

“There’s nothing of monetary value in these buildings.”

He wondered how thieves would try to sell church icons had they been stolen.

“The chalice might look like it’s gold but it’s bronze and so is the cross. Who would buy those things? There’s no cash kept in the buildings.”

He pointed out with such a small congregation numbering about 50, the church doesn’t have much cash these days.

The church is a group of four parishes called the St. Tikhan Group of Parishes and operates under the auspices of the Orthodox Church of America.

The four parishes, all located in Lamont County, are at Star, Wostok, Desjarlais and Sunland.

BY JOHN MATHER The small, elderly congregation of the Star Russo-Greek Orthodox Church are very disturbed that vandals decided to strike their small rural church June 21, smashing the bell tower door and trying to use a pry bar to force their way into the main church.

“They kicked the bell tower door off its hinges,” said church board chairman Jim Kuzyk, who lives a few miles to the west of the small church.

“If you look closely at the main church doors you can see where they put a pry bar in and tried to gain access.”

“I don’t think it was a half hearted attempt,” he added. “There wasn’t too much damage but you can see where they made a good effort.”

Kuzyk said it was the first time the small church has been vandalized, although he does say rural crime in the area is increasing.

“We’ve never had any issues in the past,” he said. “It’s very disap-

Lamont Fire Department promotes several firefighters

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Lamont fire department has experienced a flurry of activity in their chain of command recently, with the appointment of not only a new fire chief, but also a new deputy fire chief, as well as two new captains and two new lieutenants.

“It’s been a shift, that’s

for sure. A lot of people moving up in the ranks,” said Lamont fire chief Scott Calder.

Calder was promoted from captain to fire chief, with the retirement of former Lamont fire chief John Helton in March.

Calder is a 14-year veteran of the Lamont fire team.

Following Calder’s

promotion, captain Russell Scott was also promoted in June to the position of deputy chief, after the retirement earlier this year of deputy fire chief Herman Sieker. In addition, lieutenants Andrew McDonald and Kevin Price were promoted to the positions of captain.

Kowal felt he would be more open to moving some of the allowed business to a discretionary use rather than eliminating it altogether.

“After all if no one complains at a hearing for a discretionary use, then it can go ahead.”

Zyla then told council if they wanted to explore the bylaw further it didn’t have to pass two readings.

Kowal said he would like to look at any other businesses that maybe shouldn’t be included in the various zones.

Zyla said council should then get together and seek whatever clarification they want for the bylaw before passing it.

He said there wasn’t a deadline for passing the bylaw but council should be clear on it before passing it.

Talaga then withdrew her amending motion and the passage of the land use bylaw was tabled to a future meeting.

The council did pass second and final reading of its Municipal Development Plan.

Time to travel Alberta for summer, new laws coming - says MLA Dear friends and neighbours: With summer in full swing many of us are enjoying the outdoors.

I am very proud to report that the Government of Alberta has taken a significant step to protect Albertans, and crack down on metal theft. If passed, Bill 25, Protecting Alberta Industry from Theft Act, 2020, and associated regulations will require scrap metal dealers to

report all transactions involving commonly stolen metals and items such as catalytic converters to law enforcement.

Metal theft poses a significant risk to the safety of our communities.

Thieves terrify property and business owners by trespassing and stealing materials such as copper wire and industrial batteries, and frequently damage and interfere with critical systems like electrical lines, telecommunications networks and transportation infrastructure.

Our government is taking strong steps to protect Albertans from convicted sex offenders.

The proposed changes to the Vital Statistics Act would prevent convicted sex offenders from

changing their name.

These changes are designed to hold convicted sexual offenders accountable and protect survivors.

Alberta already has some of the strongest legislation around name changes and this will make it even stronger to ensure the safety of Alberta’s families and communities.

Finally, I am pleased to share that this week, the Choice in Education Act passed third reading in the Legislature. This bill will amend the Education Act to affirm that parents have the right to choose the kind of education they feel is best for their children, and it will strengthen Alberta’s successful history of education choice,

Our family would like to thank all who have supported us as we mourn through the sudden death of Ian Erickson. The Viking RCMP & First Responders, Victims Services, Pastor Alvin Sorenson, Patricia Winter, Andrew Sorenson and our extended family and friends who all began this most difficult journey with us June 3, 2020. We are forever grateful for the angels in human form. Your prayers bring comfort as does showing up with support through hugs, food, flowers, tears, donations to charities dear to Ian’s heart, cards of sympathy, messages, Schmaus’ for help getting timely springs work done and willing hands to help.

As well as those who looked after pitching in with the cows and things that needed to happen on the farm, all these acts of kindness were so appreciated. Ian touched so many lives and your care for us is treasured. Ian sought truth and found it in this verse from John 14:6 Jesus answered “I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me”. Our prayer for all of you is that you too find this truth and free gift of eternal salvation offered to each of you who believe and be baptized. It’s our only hope and all we really need in the end and what’s keeping us through this tragedy.

Calder explained that lieutenant is the first step in leadership upwards from firefighter.

“Lieutenant is the first step into the command structure,” said Calder.

“At this point you can assume command roles on calls. They will delegate station duties and tasks, organizing people.”

From lieutenant, Calder went on to describe the next levels of leadership.

“After lieutenant, the next step is captain,” he said. “Our captains work more inter-personally with the other firefighters where our lieutenants are more task oriented.”

Calder added that

Lamont fire fighter Kylee Dziwenko is one of six recent promotions within the Lamont Fire Department. Dziwenko was promoted to Lieutenant in June.

Mundare library to offer curbside pick up service

BY JOHN MATHER The Alberta Public Libraries have been granted permission to reopen as part of the province’s Stage 2 relaunch strategy, but the Mundare Public Library will be staying closed for the time being.

“As borrowed books must be quarantined for a 72-hour period following their return, there will be a delay in our returning to regular library operations,” library officials said in a press release.

But the library has announced they will institute a curbside pick up service beginning July 7.

The library will, offer the curbside service Tuesdays only from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The new process will work with the library patrons placing a hold on items from the library’s collection up to

a maximum of four items. The librarian will then check out the items into the patron’s account.

The patrons will then be contacted by telephone and a pick up time will be scheduled.

The meeting place for pick up will be outside the town office at the park bench.

Head librarian Evelyn Henke said the patrons will only be telephoned because their numbers are on file with their

memberships.

“If members wish to use an alternative communication method I ask that they sign a sign-up sheet located in the foyer to leave a different number for me,” she said.

She stressed she did need to talk to the patrons because pick up times will be scheduled in 15-minute increments and she needed to arrange a time with each patron.
