Daysland gets great news with grant announcement Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Province made an announcement on Friday, June 19, that it would be giving out $150 million in water infrastructure grants, including $137 million from the Alberta Municipal Wastewater Partnership, funding 54 projects around Alberta.

On Monday, June 29, Daysland CAO Rod Krips announced that Daysland’s application was one of those projects that had received approval.

Daysland Council sent a letter on May 5 to Municipal Affairs Minister Kayce Madu regarding two shovelready projects it called, “critical for the Town of Daysland’s infrastructure.”

The town had previously been denied for funding its wastewater infrastructure and forcemain upgrade projects, and worked to retool the application, trying to bring any possible costs down.

Local RCMP members honoured with drive-by parade Editor

“Let’s thank our RCMP for the job they do and let them know that we support them in their efforts to do that job.”

Flagstaff Family and Community Services (FFCS), as the human services agency serving Flagstaff, was asked to organize an uplifting event to recognize local RCMP members.

Invitations were issued in person and via email, with a request to spread the news, but with one proviso, “Don’t tell the RCMP,” as the impromptu gesture was intended as a surprise.

Members Corporal Trent Cleveland, Constable David Boisvert-Cormier, Constable Jacob Ott, and Constable Jake Rains were full of smiles and waving back at the passing vehicles. Unfortunately Constables Mariane Marin and Tanya Tremblay were unable to be at the detachment for that time.

Passing vehicles adorned with positive messages for the members sometimes stopped to tear off posters and hand them over as they passed by.

Members later posed for a photo with some of the messages and cards they received.

of the Killam RCMP Detachment at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 26, right when members were scheduled to do a shift change.

FFCS Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson says, “We wanted to do something as a community to thank them.”

Organizers even invited Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, who happened to be in the area. She says, “I was impressed at how many people participated in the parade!”

The parade featured lots of honking vehicles, and was led by Lovely, who says, “It was so nice to see the look of surprise and appreciation on the Member’s faces.”

Corporal Cleveland, Acting Sargeant and Commander of the Killam Detachment, says, “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the amazing communities we serve within Flagstaff County for completely surprising us here at the detachment!

“The staff here had been dropping hints all week, and we were all trying to figure out what was happening, but we never could have imaged such a grand gesture!

“Similar to what has been happening within all police forces throughout America, we have been struggling here, feeling the effects of recent events, and we have seen so many detachments, and police services not having the support of their local communities.

“Here, in Flagstaff County, we have always felt supported, valued, and that

Canadian flag meaning Two newspapers in Atlantic Canada printed Canadian flags as a centre spread so that subscribers could pull them out and put them on their windows for Canada Day. Nice eh?

Well, you’d think so. But nothing these days can be a simple lovely gesture without someone picking it apart and finding fault with it. So the newspapers found it important enough to place triggerwarnings on their front pages so that the image of the Canadian flag didn’t offend someone. “… we understand that the flag doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone…”

Really?

Canada’s flag was changed in 1965 to the maple leaf for the purpose of inclusion and unity. That’s what the flag represents, and yes it should mean the same to everyone.

But is this what we have become? Are we now a society of victims sniffing around for literally anything that remotely offends us? Must our businesses all placate to this crazed mob of victimhood?

I am proud to be Canadian. I am proud of our ancestors who fought for this country. I am proud of our history of peacekeeping, and our young military personnel who fought for our freedoms and won.

I am proud that our land is populated by both natives and immigrants from other nations who came here to raise their families with the hope of a better life. Their hard work paved the way for our civilization and continues to do so.

I am proud of our flag. To me it means we live in a land of freedom, human rights, and justice for all. No, Canada is not perfect.

Neither are the people who live here. Not you, not me, and neither were our ancestors.

Our flag is like our national anthem. I have seen better flags and have heard better anthems. But our maple leaf flag and O’ Canada are ours uniquely. They represent us all as a community of 35 million people of every thinkable ancestry who live mostly in peace and harmony.

In 1965, after nearly a hundred years of using the Canadian Red Ensign as our flag, Prime Minister Pearson fought like mad to bring the new maple leaf design to Canadians.

The year prior, wearing his two WWI medals of honour, PM Pearson gave an impassioned speech in Winnipeg to legion members who fought in two World Wars under the Red Ensign. Pearson talked about pride, patriotism and service to country but also pleaded that Canada needs a flag that is relevant to all Canadians, not just those of British descent.

So to me, this remains the meaning of the maple leaf. Unity, not division. No trigger-warning necessary for this Canadian.

Reader: Confused by inconsistencies Dear Editor: Maybe it 's because I am not a twit that uses Twitter that I don't understand the way Twitter lets some tweets through and blocks or warns about others including those from President Trump.

Like many, I have concerns about (un)social media and its ability to spread views too easily including many that I find offensive. Racism for example; or wrong, such as the vaccination opponents; or plain stupid as shown by those that think 5G or Bill Gates are involved in the spread of COVID-19.

The greatest value of a strong democracy is that it allows for a wide range of viewpoints, even those that are clearly wrong.

From this logic I am confused by Twitter's blocking or blurring of President Trump's warning about the use of "Serious force" if there is an autonomous zone set up in Washington, D.C. Although there is a warning that this tweet refers to "Abusive Behaviour" you can still proceed to the tweet and read it in full - it's like a wet paint warning which will actually encourage people to touch the surface. Surely if Twitter finds this inappropriate then it should remove it rather than the meek response this warning provides.

Twitter is working on this but there is a long way to go and the basic problem is what is offensive to some may be the view supported by others.

It seems that President Trump, although not a great fan of Twitter, is a prolific user.

He is a staunch defender of the freedom of speech as he said "We're here today to defend free speech from one of the greatest dangers it has faced in American history" (May 28, 2020) when he signed an executive order.

Yet he is apparently trying to stop his niece from writing a book about the family. It is easy to assume that the book will not be positive as steps are being made to ban it.

The first amendment has much to say on press freedom, "..no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.." and Presidents have sworn to "to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

I am confused.

Few countries, or even people are perfect, but most aspire to be the best they can be. Some don't!

Supports for businesses forced to close New Hardisty councillor by acclamation Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Applications for the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Relaunch grant opened on Monday, June 29. This is a one-time grant of up to $5,000 for businesses, non-profits, and cooperatives impacted by COVID-19.

Eligible businesses and organizations can apply for a grant equal to 15 per cent of their pre-COVID-19 revenue, up to a maximum of $5,000.

These include businesses that were ordered to close or curtail their operations due to public health orders; and who experienced a revenue reduction of at least 50 per cent in April and/or May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and who have 500 or fewer employees.

The Province has committed $200 million in funding for this program, which is being administered by Alberta Economic Development, Trade, and Tourism.

Applications will remain open until Aug. 31, or four weeks after the start of Phase three of Alberta’s relaunch.

Flagstaff County is considered to be in the southern region of the province, and applicants were encouraged to apply on June 30. After July 4, applicants from all regions of the province will be accepted, due to the volume of applications expected.

Applicants may not have received payments, grants, or amounts from any other sources, including insurance for the loss of revenue, other than funding from government assistance programs like the WCB premium relief, Business Credit Availability, Western Economic Development Regional Relief and Recovery Fund, Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance, and Government of Alberta grant relief funding for the child care sector specifically.

The Town of Hardisty held a Nomination Day on Monday, June 29, to fill one vacant Council seat left by the resignation of Roger Gaetzman on April 13..

Sandy Otto, CAO of Hardisty, received one nomination form, from Brett Baumgartner. Nominations are considered final 24-hours after submission.

Baumgartner says, “I was born and raised in Hardisty and have seen a lot of changes over the years, some good and some not so good.

“I have been interested in a councillor position for quite a while, but always felt it wasn’t the right time to run, especially with young children keeping me busy.

“I realized there will probably never be a ‘right time,’ so with a little convincing

from some people in town, I decided to put my nomination in.”

Baumgartner says he’s excited for this opportunity, as it’s been something he’s been interested in for a long time.

“I was surprised that I was the only one to put my nomination in, I was expecting more.”

He says he has no immediate goals; “I just kind of want to learn the ropes quickly.

“I definitely do have concerns with the school being closed by the Battle River School Division as it is a very important part of the community.

“To attract families to town you need to have a school so hopefully we can find options to have a school in town soon.”

The next meeting of Council will take place on July 9, Baumgartner will be sworn in at that meeting.

The phone has literally been ringing off the hook with teams and hockey camps looking for ice time. Our Facility Manager, Darryl Gagnon, has done a great job in setting this up. The Carena is almost fully booked until August 15. Theses camps range from Atom age to NHL and NCAA players. Moving forward these are very positive signs for the future of the summer programs.

The protocols can be found on our website. It is a fairly extensive list that all players, coaches and parents must follow to be allowed in the Carena. There will be a maximum of 20 participants on the ice at any one time (17 players and 3 coaches). Each team will have 2 dressing rooms with the shared bathroom. (i.e. 1&2 and 3&4). The dressing rooms are allowed only 10 persons each. The dressing rooms will be cleaned between use.

Unfortunately, the Carena lobby will not be open to the public. The Province has placed a limit on the number of people that can gather indoors.

The front entrances will be marked allowing entrance to the Town Office or the Carena Lobby. This will ensure that there will be little interaction between the Office and the Lobby. The entrance to the lobby area is for parents of the participants.

The Apple Fitness Centre remains closed at this time. Currently there is no date for reopening. We are waiting for future updates and instructions from the Provincial Government.

RCMP deal with multiple assault STARS called to accident near Killam complaints over two week period Leslie Cholowsky Editor - with files from Cpl. Trent Cleveland Killam RCMP

Killam RCMP members dealt with 93 calls for service in the two week period June 15 to 28.

Members responded to three 911 calls, and two false alarms.

One report came in about an abandoned motor vehicle, and police received eight calls concerning suspicious vehicles or persons.

One animal call was made to police.

RCMP investigated five assault complains, and two assaults with a weapon complaints.

Members responded to a call about an individual unlawfully in a dwelling.

Three breach of peace complaints were made.

RCMP received nine break and enter complaints; two, to residences, turned out to be unfounded. Seven break and enter to businesses occurred in Hardisty, Daysland, and Sedgewick golf courses, with golf clubs and golf carts being stolen. These occurrences have been linked to similar occurrences in Viking and surrounding areas.

A company truck stolen in a break and enter to a business occurring in Killam resulting in the truck later being found in Ponoka.

Charges are pending on this case.

One complaint of criminal harassment has been made to police.

Members responded to a complaint of dangerous driving.

Police were called with a disturbance of the peace complaint.

Three instances of failing to comply with release orders were recorded by RCMP. On June 23, a 41-year-old man from Hardisty was charged with Assault with a Weapon, Mischief, and Failure to comply with a release order.

The same day a 32year-old Killam man was charged with failure to comply with a release order.

A bail hearing was conducted, and charges were withdrawn.

RCMP had two firearm offence complaints.

One report of fraud was made to police.

Two complaints of harassing communications were made to RCMP. Two complaints under the Alberta Health Act regarding COVID-19 were made to RCMP. One report of identification theft was made to RCMP. RCMP assisted other agencies three times during the two-week period.

Two calls were made to police under the Mental Health Act. Three reports of mischief are presently under investigation.

RCMP handed out 15 provincial violation tickets under the Traffic Safety Act, and one Impaired Driving complaint. One roadside suspension was given

out.

Two instances of theft under $5,000 are being investigated, and one possession of stolen property.

RCMP are investigating a complaint of sexual assault.

Members had eight motor vehicle collisions reported.

Three provincial trespass act violations were reported, as well as one trespass at night.

RCMP were asked to perform one well-being check during this period.

RCMP report that a number of occurrences reported here have charges pending.

STARS Air Ambulance made an emergency landing on Highway 36 south of Killam last Wednesday, June 24, during the afternoon. Flagstaff Rescue, Killam Fire Department, RCMP, and AHS-EMS Paramedics from Forestburg responded to a single vehicle accident where the driver sustained injuries. Thanks to the drivers of two grain trucks who parked their vehicles in front of and behind the accident scene before emergency services arrived on scene.

BRSD wraps up 2019-21; prepares for fall

Battle River School Division (BRSD) trustees met for the final meeting of the 2019-2020 year on Thursday, June 11, where they learned about Alberta Education’s plans for the 202021 school year.

The division reports that Alberta Education will determine which of three potential scenarios being examined will be in place for the fall by Aug. 1.

Superintendent Rita Marler advised trustees that staff at BRSD have been putting plans in place to be ready for whatever scenario the division faces come September.

Minister of Education Adriana LaGrange reported on June 10 that the Province’s goal is for all students and staff to return to school buildings next fall, with a “nearly normal” routine.

But the division says it’s possible that students will return to a “mixed reality” that

could combine attendance and non-attendance days, or even returning to an online at-home learning format.

The board heard from Marler that a return to ‘near normal’ will not be exactly the same as preCOVID-19, with extra cleaning and sanitizing measures, and organizing around smaller groupings of students and staff.

The division will share more details after Aug. 1.

BRSD received input from nearly 2,300 parents, over 1,200 students, and around 500 staff members on a recent re-entry survey.

The division says that parents expressed concerns about children moving ahead with learning, as well as the social and emotional wellbeing of students.

Students expressed their concerns about the impact of being apart from friends and normal school routines.

Staff responses indicated confidence that

they would be in a position to support students in whatever school looked like in the fall, while also expressing concerns about ensuring everyone’s health and safety in a school environment.

The division says it will try to address all concerns as it plans for students’ fall re-entry.

“There will be time dedicated to understanding and supporting where students are at in the learning, as well as supporting their physical, social, and emotional wellness.”

Trustees got an update from the BRSD Transportation department, who has been reviewing all routes and transportation plans for the fall, and has discerned that routes in two areas will be able to be reduced.

Alberta Education is also conducting a review of transportation services across the province, with those results due in the fall.

Four former MLAs asking province to honour legal and moral commitments made in Augustana/U of A merger in Op-Ed Former Wetaskiwin-Camrose MLA Verlyn Olson reached out to local media this week to ask the public to engage in a discussion regarding the U of A Augustana campus’ role in the community, and the future of rural post-secondary schools generally.

He got together with four other past MLAs, who as a group, in an attempt to get people engaged in the conversation, have crafted a public statement.

It offers some history into how Augustana became part of the U of A as well as insight into the value Augustana brings to the community and to rural Alberta.

An open letter to supporters of rural post-secondary education As former MLA’s for the Wetaskiwin Camrose constituency, we are all proud of the quality of life which we and all residents of this area enjoy. That is due, in no small part, to the strong health and educational infrastructure we have here and hope to retain. To do so, it has become apparent to us that we must have a discussion about the role of the Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta (“U of A”), and all post-secondary campuses in rural Alberta.

They are critical elements of our postsecondary system. We take them for granted and fail to support them at the risk of our rural communities and, frankly, Alberta’s future prosperity.

This discussion is timely because in the 2019 McKinnon Report on Alberta’s Finances, it was recommended that Government of Alberta should “consult with stakeholders to set the overall future direction and goals of our post secondary system along with appropriate governance models.” And now, the Government has just announced an indepth review of all elements of the postsecondary system, to be completed in the next few months. So, where does Augustana fit in?

In 2003/04, the CLCC entered into a three-party Merger Agreement with the U of A and the Government to merge Augustana with the U of A, and make it a Faculty and Camrose campus of the U of A. It is the commitments made in that Merger Agreement which we wish to draw to the reader’s attention.

The Merger was strongly supported

by Government as well as surrounding rural municipalities including the County of Camrose and the City of Camrose, for obvious reasons.

The existence of a rural campus of a large, world-class university served the purpose of making undergraduate, post-secondary education more accessible while at the same time training people for work and service in rural Alberta. And so, the Merger was a “win-win-win” for all three of the signatory parties.

Historically, Augustana has been a first stop for rural high school graduates as they embarked on their postsecondary careers. One of the best and latest examples of our many successful alumni is Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

In a recent interview in the U of A’s eCircle magazine, Dr. Hinshaw, from Sylvan Lake and a member of a thirdgeneration farm family, spoke about Augustana giving her a broad liberal arts education along with her majors in chemistry and biology.

“It really was a fantastic experience, very formative,” she said. “I had the opportunity to take courses in religion, drama, music, and sports, and was on their crosscountry ski team. I made great friends, mentors and teachers who really emphasized well-roundedness and being a whole person.”

The Government is facing numerous serious financial challenges and, not surprisingly, those challenges have trickled down to universities and to each of us and our communities. It makes sense for Government to see how things could be done better, and more efficiently. However, we feel strongly that for the sake of our children and grandchildren and that of rural Alberta, our essential infrastructure must be protected.

With the passage of time, institutional memory can fade and people who were in place at the time of the Merger in 2003/04 may no longer be there. It is critical that policy makers understand what the Merger Agreement said and “why” it was so important.

The Merger Agreement limits the U of A (acting reasonably) to modifying “Augustana Programs and CCE Programs” in content, form, or delivery for three reasons only: a) to complement the University’s existing programs and systems; b) to meet community needs, and c) to enhance the financial viability of the Augustana Faculty.

Schedule 1 to the Merger Agreement makes it quite clear that the intent of the Government (a party to the Agreement) was to: a) ensure the continuation of an important rural-based Postsecondary Campus; b) ensure that a degree-granting Postsecondary campus is “maintained in Camrose,” and c) ensure “the long-term financial and operational stability of Augustana.”

Our belief is that to maintain a strong University, we must give students a holistic experience which includes not only academics but also culture and sport.

If the goal is to bring young people to our communities and make them want to stay here after they have completed their studies, then these elements are essential. Using hockey as an example,

perhaps that is why some 15 graduating Vikings’ hockey alumni have put down roots in Camrose in the last eight years and many more have chosen to settle in other rural communities around the province.

Perhaps that is also the reason why most of the graduates of the just recently terminated Rehabilitation Medicine Program have, since its location in Camrose, gone on to work in rural Alberta. And what is more, it is not just about keeping rural kids in rural Alberta.

Augustana and its programs have also attracted urban students who loved rural Alberta so much that they stayed. What better rural development tool is there than that?

In summary, we are very bullish on rural Alberta and what rural campuses like Augustana have to offer. We hope CLC/Augustana alumni and residents of this region will take this opportunity for input and make their voices heard.

There is a role for all of us to encourage the Premier, the Minister of Advanced Education and your MLA, as well as U of A policy makers, to honour the legal and moral commitments made at the time of the Merger and to motivate the University of Alberta to find ways to help Augustana meet its mandate, and to preserve and even expand its offerings in rural Alberta.

This is not a question of politics or ideology. Rather, it is about a common vision for our rural communities.

If we are serious about rural economic development and encouraging our young people to receive an education and make a life in rural Alberta,institutions like Augustana must not only survive, they must grow and flourish.

“The potable water plant and reservoir project is now complete, as is much of the sanitary sewer piping work with approximately 3,000 m of sewer piping restoration completed, which has helped to reduce the previous inflow/infiltration problems the Town was experiencing.”

Marr described the proposed work on the lift station and forcemain as “critical, especially given the age of the system (40+ years) and that both components have been repaired using stopgap measures over the past eight years...” Marr further estimated that work on the project is expected to create a number of permanent year-long employment positions and would most likely support local contractors and businesses.

He expressed an opinion that the project would align well with the intent of the COVID-19 economic stimulus package.

“Another important consideration for approval is that the existing Lift Station and Forcemain system has experienced two past failures which caused serious basement flooding events in the older eastern section of Town. Both the Town and Banner are concerned about the replacement of this aged infrastructure and the concerns are increased dramatically with current events.

“A similar failure or event as experienced in the past, would be dramatically exacerbated because of the current COVID-19 pandemic so the shovelready funding opportunity is optimum and critical to help minimize/control

the Town’s potential public health risks.”

The total grant received was $3,189,375, and an official presentation ceremony was held in Daysland on Tuesday, June 30, with Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely.

Krips says the total project cost estimate is $4,254,840, with the province’s share representing 75 per cent of the total cost. “The remaining 25 per cent is the Town’s responsibility and will be raised by debenture.”

In the original announcement of the funding, Premier Jason Kenney said, “As we move ahead with Alberta’s relaunch, this additional investment will go a long way to helping rural municipalities get back on their feet and back to work.”

Just in time for Canada Day, the Province announced Tuesday, June 30, that the outdoor gathering limit has been increased from 100 to 200 people.

“The increase applies to attendees at community outdoor events such

as festivals, fireworks displays, rodeos and sporting events, and outdoor performances.”

All public health guidelines must still be followed, including physical distancing. Outdoor events that are seated will still require necessary space between families and cohort groups in attendance.

inch as of noon on Tuesday.

I know we're going to get some more today and tomorrow. There are not many live Canada Day Celebrations going on, I think many will be celebrating on the July 4 weekend.

I know at Willow Grove we are having a

parade with hot dogs, cake, and drinks, as well as games to celebrate with fireworks in the evening. It should be a nice day by then.

I was out and weeded my garden and it is growing awesome. I just cut off a whole whack of lettuce to use. I was planning on giving some to a

friend but it won't be today.

Hopefully, the good Lord will know when to shut the tap off, don't you agree? We need some nice warm weather.

It’s so good to know that our library is open again with a few restrictions, also I'm happy to hear that the Heisler Rec

Centre will be open by the 12 of July with summer bowling starting up.

Crews have been spraying strategic and residential locations with MG 30 dust suppressant and will continue to do so throughout the upcoming week. All MG 30 dust suppressant application is dependent on weather conditions.

Gravel is available for sale to a maximum of 150 tonnes/year per residential/farm/acreage site. Gravel is not available for sale to commercial users. Anyone wishing to purchase gravel must contact the Public Works Department to obtain a “Permission for Purchase of Gravel” form. Gravel will not be loaded out of a pit without this form. Gravel sales will be limited to the following dates in 2020:

The roof on the Bottle Depot is finished with a new metal roof. I have been nagging Doug for ages about it. The poor man once told me that sometimes nagging is good. He has to deal with

me on the cows, too. Offer him some sympathy.

Dell and Randy Wickstrom were in Carstairs last weekend to celebrate the graduation of granddaughter Paige. Paige is the soccer ace among other awards.

Have you noticed the lovely planters on Main Street? The hanging ones that were always up were difficult to water, harder to hang up, and above eye level. The new plant pot stands were made by Jay Stuckey. The containers were planted at Niconna Greenhouse.

Josephine McKenzie’s son and family from Edmonton just bought a second-hand tent trailer.

They made the first trial trip to Alliance to set it up in John and Josephine’s back yard. The grandkids Dakota and Maya are having a great time and grandma is enjoying having them. Unfortunately John had to head out to work.

My grandson Jesse Dammann, Doug’s boy, is going to come give me a hand doing some of the heavy jobs I have lined up. I always have a list of jobs for younger, stronger people to do. When the grandkids were little they would warn others not to tell Gramma that you are bored because she will give you a job.

Work progressing on Killam Campus of Caring phase two Work is progressing on the Killam Campus of Caring phase two renovations, as work crews renovate the older sections of the long term care at the Killam Health Centre.

Covenant Health says, “We are pleased to share progress on the second phase of the Killam Campus of Caring project.

Faith: The skies display His craftsmanship Recently I was privileged to ride an aerial lift, and do some work 60 feet up in the air.

Now, I recognize that there are many people that work in them all the time and to them 60 feet is nothing, but I am a pastor and I was very aware of the empty space under my feet as my white knuckles bore witness.

When I finally overcame my sense of self-preservation, and lifted up my eyes, I was greeted by a beautiful panoramic view and was reminded of the words of Psalms 19:1-2: “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.

Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known.”

The reason for the beautiful green is found in the seasonal rains that water the land. As every gardener and farmer knows rains bring life.

A little later in verse seven of the same Psalm the writer says: “The instructions of the LORD are perfect, reviving the soul.”

My question for you is how is your soul? Is it well watered by the Living Water of the Word, green and vibrant, or is it dry and parched in need of a watering? Take some time and allow the Living Word of God to water your soul this week.

Driving around the county there is a disturbing amount of encroachment into the county road allowance.

This can be the case where the ditch is being farmed to within a couple of feet of the actual road or spray booms having over-sprayed the crop and killed out the grass in the ditch.

It also includes the farming of undeveloped road allowances.

County road allowances are surveyed to be exactly 66 feet wide. In most cases, the roads themselves are six to eight metres wide.

That’s about 26 feet.

That means there is about 20 feet on either side of the road that is county property.

Some producers cultivate and crop right up to within a foot or two of the road surface.

This undermines the integrity of the road base and causes problems when we are having to work on the roads.

It causes problems with drainage, mowing, weed control, and issues with road maintenance, and rebuilding.

How would you react if your neighbour was farming your land without your permission?

You might be a little more than upset.

It interferes with the county responsibility of providing safe roads to the public.

On the weed side, there is nothing worse than seeing field spraying extend their booms into the ditch. It has taken years to establish a good grass catch along the road.

It’s a case of inattention during spraying giving long term issues for both the county and adjacent land owner.

Be aware that a road allowance, developed or undeveloped, is the property and responsibility of the county.

To preserve the integrity of the road and drainage, a minimum of one metre of undisturbed land is needed from the toe of the slope of the road.

Any undeveloped road allowance being used for grazing or cropping must still be available for access purposes.

When encroaching on the road allowance, be mindful that there can be many unintended negative consequences.

Maple trees a symbol of Canada that grow across the country Each year we celebrate our great country of Canada and it seems only fitting to focus on the maple trees for this column as our flag proudly displays a maple leaf.

On Feb. 15, 1965, Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed that our new flag would be raised over Parliament Hill which displays the official colours of Canada (red and white) and a stylized 11point maple leaf in its centre.

Maple trees belong to the genus Acer and there are more than one hundred species of maples around the world. Most of the maples are deciduous and will often display spectacular colours in the autumn if the climate allows that development.

In southern Asia there are a few native maples which are not deciduous so for those of us who are horticultural buffs, the exceptions to the norm continues!

From a botany perspective, the maple is a perfect tree. From the smallest detail to the overall proportion of the tree every characteristic is in duplicate. Each bud is matched by a twin bud that sits directly opposite of each other on the twig.

Branches and leaves are also twins and even in the seed leaf patterns angles and curves of one side are the mirror opposite on the other.

With the exception of the Manitoba maple, all maple leaves are readily identi-

fied by their three or five lobed leaves, distinguished primarily by their teeth and notches.

The wood of the maple is the second-most important hardwood species in Canada. It rides on the tails of birch and is used for flooring, furniture, boats, and the interior woodwork of many houses.

In Ontario, there are native maples like sugar, black, red, silver, mountain, striped, as well as the introduced Manitoba and Norway maples.

The Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is native to the broadleaf forests in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes, and extends as far south as Georgia. It thrives on deep, fertile, and well-drained soils and

That’s a fancy-schmancy way of saying laughter brings people together and helps us think. It also helps us express our feelings, can turn a tense moment into a light moment and is just plain good for us.

Remember the basics. In tough times, we can lose track of the basics of healthy living. Here’s a friendly reminder: eat healthy foods as much as possible. Stay connected with other family members, friends, and co-workers while maintaining physical distancing. Get a good night’s sleep.

Most of all, reach out for help if you need it. Alberta Health Services, the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada, your local municipality, and hundreds of community groups have all kinds of support and assistance

Sedgewick woman pledges to walk 100km to raise funds and awareness for rare form of cancer Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Elaine DeBock from Sedgewick has pledged to walk 100km over the summer to raise $1,500 for the Canadian Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (CNETS).

DeBock has been living with this rare form of cancer since 2013, and since her diagnosis, has been a strong advocate for raising awareness of Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETS), and now is determined to also raise funds for research.

When she was first diagnosed, doctors found three tumours on her liver, one on a lymph node, and another in her colon. When caught in early stages, removal of a tumour is considered a cure. Unfortunately, DeBock was not considered a good candidate for surgery. She says, “In later stages, they can’t be removed but are generally very slow growing tumours. There is no cure.”

DeBock says it’s an unusual cancer.

“When you’re diagnosed, and treated, your cancer is still there, it doesn’t go away. But the doctors don’t tell you that you have ‘x’ amount of time left. It’s a form of chronic cancer.”

After receiving her initial treatment, DeBock found that her tumours were not growing, in fact some had shrunk, and some disappeared altogether, leaving her with three.

DeBock participated in a clinical trial at the Cross Cancer Institute for 12 injections, six months apart, where she received a drug that included a radioactive isotrope intravenously. She says she received her final treatment in the trial on June 18 last year.

“Coming to the end of the treatments felt a bit like stepping off a cliff, but I'm being monitored every six months with CT scans, blood work, and clinical visits.

“That's all coming up again in July, so I'll know then if there's been any change. I'm feeling 100 per cent though,” she says. “Every six months, I could get good news, or bad news.”

In addition, DeBock receives an injection of medication every 28 days. Her monthly injections are done at her home by a nurse sent by the company who manufactures the drug. The injection requires mixing and precise timing.

“Living a life around 28-day injections has definitely curtailed travelling,” something she and her husband Richard loved to do prior to her diagnosis. In fact, it was during a trip to China where the first traces of the tumours were caught.

“People who know I have cancer expect the usual, you get better, or you die. Many people assume that I’m cured, or in remission. That’s not the

case.” She adds, “Chronic cancer is a good way to describe it.”

DeBock has battled three bouts with cancers over the years, most recently she discovered, a year ago, that she has a completely different form of cancer in her thyroid, which is being monitored at this time. About seven months after her initial NETS diagnosis, she’d been diagnosed with a second unrelated cancer that was surgically removed.

The first Sunday of June is National Cancer Survivors Day, and she celebrated the day, saying, “In spite of all this, I am a survivor!”

In the past few years, DeBock has used her personal blog to educate and inform readers about NETS, and she shared her story with us back in 2017.

Now she’s doing that again, participating in CNETS Hoofing It Across Canada Campaign.

The Society has pledged a goal of raising $100,000, DeBock’s is more modest, she’s hoping to raise $1,500 by Sept. 11.

She’s planning to walk or hike a total of 100km over the summer, and with her regular good humour, has decided to do it wearing an eye-catching top. “If you’re in Sedgewick, you’ll probably see me walking around town or out on the walking path wearing my zebra stripes.”

CNETS adopted the zebra as its mascot because early symptoms of NETS can make doctors think of betterknown, less deadly diseases. “Why a zebra? Medical students learn, “If you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. So zebras like NETS cancer can be wrongly diagnosed as a horse like Crohn’s or other better-known diseases.”

In 2013 the society first launched its first “spot the zebra” campaign, and a recent “Light up Black and White” campaign featuring prominent Canadian Landmarks reached more than 20,000 people.

DeBock says, “It’s almost seven years since I was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. Once the shock of learning that I had a cancer that I’d never heard of and that I’d be living with it for the rest of my life wore off, it became important to me to do what I could to help raise awareness of this little-known disease and to support fundraising efforts for research, better treatments, and patient support.”

DeBock says that more money raised for research could translate into more clinical trials and new treatment options being made available in future.

“That’s why I’m going to be ‘Hoofing It Across Canada’ with CNETS.” The Society’s goal in the campaign is for participants to log at least 5,514 km, the distance from Newfoundland to the Yukon.
