Tofield Summer Program full of weekly events - says coordinator Makenna Moos

This year Tofield resident Makenna Moos is the Town of Tofield’s summer program coordinator.

She graduated from high school last year and has plans to attend post secondary education in the fall.

“I start a paramedical program in October,” Moos said.

As for Moos’ plan for the summer she said, “I want the kids to have fun mostly. I want them to like coming here and to make some new friends.

“It helps them to adjust to the school year, even coming in here. The kids are always like, ‘Oh my gosh, I know you from school.’ They're learning new things.

“We try everything once here and if they hate it, they don't have to do it again. If they love it, we embrace it. We do that kind of stuff, like, we've been making bracelets for three days because they just love it. They're obsessed with it.”

Last Tuesday, July 11 the kids went on a field trip to Telus World of Science in Edmonton.

The program headed to the Aviation Museum in Edmonton and the Saltos Gymnastics Club in Sherwood Park on Tuesday July 18.

Moos’ has had years of caretaking experience for children. “I babysat for a long time and I've been around kids my whole life. I'm good with kids. They're easy. They're super, super cute.”

Moos has helpers to assist with the daily pro- gram for both the morning and afternoon programs.

On average, “for morning program, we only get about six or seven [kids]. Usually, for afternoon we range from anywhere from 20 to 35. So it's quite high in the afternoon.”

Winder, Marian Blanche (nee Hardy)

October 28, 1947 – July 8, 2023

Marian Winder, 75, passed away July 8. Marian will be greatly missed by her husband of 54 years, Glen, son Bradley (Jonathan), daughter Jody (Kevin), granddaughter Kaylee and special niece Angela.

Marian was born on October 28, 1947, in Tofield, AB to parents Jack and Inga Hardy. She was a little sister to Donald. Marian grew up in Tofield and spent her childhood riding horses, playing sports with the neighbourhoodboys, and fishing and camping with her family.

After graduating high school in 1966, she attended NAIT, studying Medical Laboratory Technology. Glen and Marian were married on September 7, 1968. Marian worked at the U of A Hospital in the Hematology Department for eight years. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her early twenties and the disease impacted her activity level the remainder of her life.

Children, Bradley was welcomed into their world in 1973 and Jody in 1976. In 1978, the family moved out to a farm in the Hay Lakes area. There they built on to the existing farm infrastructure, bred purebred beef cattle and raised their family. Not only did Glen and Marian operate a farm, but they were also co-owners of an oilfield well servicing business.

Many of Marian’s happiest moments were with horses. She spent many hours at horse sales searching for that perfect horse. Marian and daughter, Jody were members of the Miquelon Lake Saddle Club and spent many summer weekends at gymkhana events.

Marian enjoyed playing slo-pitch, curling, golfing and was a sports fan. Reading, puzzling, listening to music and shopping were some of Marian’s other enjoyments in life. She enjoyed attending farm auctions, was great at finding a bargain and was not afraid to barter on price.

Marian was honest and real, tough as nails, down to earth, very organized, had tremendous forethought, and a memory like an elephant. She was a great conversationalist, willing to talk to anybody and wanted to know more about them. Marian was very resourceful and a great planner. Above all else, she was empathetic and generous. We will miss her sense of humour, verbal jabs and gentle nagging.

Battling and beating breast cancer in 2020, she was diagnosed with terminal peritoneal cancer in 2021, Marian fought fiercely to live, as long as she could, for her granddaughter who was the “light of her life”. Kaylee and her grandma had a special bond and Marian’s legacy will continue with Kaylee.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 on August 26, 2023 at the Hay Lakes Recreation Center.

Memorial donations can be made to the “Glen and Marian Winder Family Trust Fund” through the Battle River Community Foundation (a scholarship fund for students in Hay Lakes and Tofield who may not be able to fund a post-secondary education), the Camrose and Area Animal Shelter Society or the Alberta SPCA.
