Viking Library hosts ‘Permanence of Ink’ art display Patricia Harcourt Editor

The “Permanence of Ink” theme graces the walls of the Viking Municipal Library with four artists using a graceful medium to beautiful and authentic effect. Patrons are invited to come and view these original artworks created through a time honoured medium. Ink drawings can be simple or extremely complex and allow the viewer’s perspective to be enhanced. The display is part of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts “Travelling Exhibition Program.” The artwork comes from an extensive AFA collection, with a mandate to “provide every Albertan with the opportunity to enjoy visual art exhibitions in their community.” Each year over 300,000 Albertans attend these art displays in their local community libraries, and this latest display at Viking’s library includes artists Celeste Walsh, Karrie Arthurs, Christina Wallwork and Nikki Skilliter.

Their work is described as “reflecting themes that also have left a lasting effect on our human nature,” such as mortality, mythology, religion and spirituality.” These are artists who value “the things of old,” the tools of ink and pen assuredly, along with sacred spaces, the life of plants, animals and idols, and the art of tattooing. Walsh and Arthurs tattoo using mythological and iconographic themes on the human canvas for lasting, moveable designs. Arthurs has a series of reworked antique portrait photographs on display at the library called “Family Revenants,” while Walsh exhibits her fine artwork of “delicate lines, intricate details and creative vision.” See her work “Metamorphosis, 2019, Ink on Paper,” among others on display. Spiritual themes, such as life, death, rebirth and transformation are the themes for Wallwork and Skilliter, who use ideas such as blindfolds and the flight of birds and butterflies as ethereal and brief glimpses into the unknown See ART DISPLAY P2
