Mundare to the rescue Emergency crew de-escalates dangerous situation

Tanker flips near Mundare on Highway 15 spilling crude oil

BY JOHN MATHER A tanker transport truck carrying a load of crude oil, flipped on Highway 15 near Township Road 540 near Mundare, July 5, spilling some of its load.

The Mundare Fire and Emergency Rescue Department responded and were quickly able to stop the spill with less than 100 litres escaping the tanker, said Fire Chief Glenda Dales.

“No product made contact with any

water,” she added.

Highway 15 was closed down for much of the day with only one lane opened for traffic.

The scene, she added, was released to an emergency and hazardous

response team around 5 p.m. July 5 with clean up continuing well into the night.

Multiple charges for Chipman pair after police stop U-Haul On June 18, 2021, Fort Saskatchewan RCMP received a complaint of a U-Haul truck driving erratically.

An RCMP Capital East Traffic officer conducted a traffic stop on the UHaul. Officers entered into an investigation involving drugs and stolen property.

A subsequent search of the U-Haul resulted in several items being seized including; stolen motorcycles, stolen mountain bikes, stolen credit card, drug paraphernalia and what is suspected to be heroin and crystal meth.

Logan Laird, a 41year-old female; and Scott Summers, a 41year-old male; both of Chipman, were charged with multiple offences, including the following: - Possession of stolen

property over $5,000 (x2); - Possession of stolen property under $5,000 (x3); - Possession of counterfeit money;

- Possession of a controlled substance (x2); - Possession of stolen credit card.

Laird has an additional charge of Uttering a Forged Document.

Summers has two

additional charges of Failure to Comply with Undertaking.

The police investigation is ongoing at this time.

Laird and Summers were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Fort Saskatchewan Provincial Court on July 22, 2021.

Bruderheim to add disc golf to list of family-friendly recreational activities

BY JANA SEMENIUK Bruderheim residents will soon add disc golf to the list of family-friendly activities to do in town.

The Bruderheim Ag Society acquired financial support for a new disc golf course through Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Sport Relief Fund as well as the Town of Bruderheim’s Community Investment grant hoping to get people out and active.

“We heard about disc golf, and it seemed like a fun game,” said Sherry

Cote, Bruderheim Director of Legislative Services in addition to Treasurer for the Ag Society.

“We were looking at different opportunities for kids to get out and play, and this seemed like a good fit.”

As the name suggests, disc golf is played similar to regular golf only instead of clubs batting a ball towards a hole, a disc similar to a frisbee is thrown towards a pole extending from the ground with chains and

a basket. The object of the game is to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws, starting from a tee area and finishing at the basket.

According to Wikipedia, three countries account for 85 percent of all disc golf courses worldwide; the United States at 75 percent, Finland at 7 percent, and Canada at 3 percent.

As the game has grown in popularity, disc golf courses have popped up over the years in areas such as Edmonton, Leduc and Spruce Grove. Alberta has a total of 66 disc golf courses according to discgolfscene.com.

Cote said the new Bruderheim disc golf course will give local youth another activity to enjoy outdoors as well as provide an opportunity for mentorship.

“This will provide an opportunity to get youth outdoors and engaged in recreational sports. There is no cost to learn disc golf, and they will have access to the equipment for free,” she said.

“Youth ambassadors

will also mentor the younger children who wish to learn the sport.”

Cote noted that a committee has been formed to aid in creating the course.

“We have a committee consisting of residents who have played the game in other communities. They are working with us to set up the course and provide encouragement and support to those new to the game,” she said.

Cote added that the course should be ready to use within the next few weeks.

Opinion Higher gas prices reflect badly on Biden decisions

BY JOHN MATHER By all accounts last weekend’s July 4th holiday south of the border was a great success.

Americans, revelling in the easing of pandemic rules, flocked to airports and hit the highways to visit family they hadn’t seen or hugged in more than a year.

And what happened?

Well fuel prices rocketed upwards!

A year ago a gallon of regular in the U.S. on average cost $2.18 but last weekend it was averaging $3.13. And that’s up from $3.05 per gallon just a month ago.

And if the price consumers are paying at the pump went up, you can bet that the price of fuel for all those now crowded airplanes also went up.

Of course, the price of fuel fluctuates on demand and the more demand there is then the higher the price.

And the fuel comes through the process of refining oil.

So the price for crude oil is also climbing.

But OPEC, the main oil cartel in the world, has been unable to agree on a new formula to expand oil production throughout their member countries.

Therefore, again, the price of crude goes up.

The result of this is one of the things that makes Americans angry. Higher and higher fuel prices.

Canadians are no different although much of our high fuel prices (higher than the American prices) are due to provincial and federal governments getting their hands on our money through fuel taxes.

“Robust gasoline demand and more expensive crude oil prices are pushing gas prices higher,” said Jeanette McGee, an American Automobile Association spokesman in a statement.

“We had hoped that global crude production increases would bring some relief at the pump this month, but weekend OPEC negotiations fell through with no agreement reached.”

Oil prices are currently at levels not seen since 2018, with West Texas Intermediate hovering around $73.15, well above the pre-pandemic price of $40.00.

This will now reflect badly on the Biden administration.

Remember, he killed the Keystone XL project during his first day in office back in January.

Now after owners TC Energy killed off the project following the permitting cancellations, the company is suing the Biden Administration under provisions of the North American Free Trade pact. The Alberta government has also jumped into the lawsuit, because the province invested more than a billion dollars in the Keystone project. Its cancellation leaves taxpayers on the hook for the money and obviously makes the Kenney government look like dolts.

Meanwhile in Michigan, green Democratic Governor Gretchen Widmar continues to fight the replacement of Line 5 under the Strait of Mackinac connecting Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

CONTINUED Widmar is arguing before the courts that the pipeline, which supplies oil and natural gas to much of Michigan, Ohio, and other states as well as Ontario and Quebec, poses a threat of potential leaks contaminating the strait.

So let’s think, if XL were to proceed and Line 5 was to be rebuilt in a tunnel as its owners propose, wouldn’t the U.S. have more abundant and secure supplies of crude to refine into gas, jet fuels and other products.

And by having this abundance, would the prices come down, making American consumers happier?

But not a word from sleepy Joe. Nope he’s hoping OPEC can work it out amongst themselves and increase the supply, even though

much of the OPEC is produced using methods that are totally unacceptable from environmental and human rights viewpoints in North America. And that’s something that Alberta oil is not. It is ethically produced and is environmentally friendly.

A report in Al Jazeera claims the U.S. is encouraged by the ongoing OPEC talks.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki declined to specify which U.S. officials were involved in ongoing negotiations but signalled that she didn’t expect President Joe Biden to personally make calls.

The U.S. hopes talks will lead to an agreement that “will promote access to affordable and reliable energy,” she said. The impact of talks on gas prices in the U.S. is of interest to the administration, she said.

Saudi Deputy Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, visited Washington last week, and met with top Defence Department officials, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said without providing details on the talks.

“The president (Biden) wants Americans to have access to affordable and reliable energy, including at the pump. And so that’s why our team is constantly monitoring gas prices and directly communicating with OPEC parties to get to a deal and allow proposed production increases to move forward,” Psaki said.

Well maybe he shouldn’t have been so hasty to cancel Keystone, and maybe he should tell his Michigan buddy Gretchen to stop her silly court injunction and then maybe Americans would have that secure and reliable access he desires!

Lamont summer programs back to personal interaction

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont FCSS children’s summer programs will resume in person this summer, instead of running as virtual programming which happened last year during the pandemic.

Kids Summer Day Camp kicks off for children ages seven to 12 at five locations across the County.

Programs will be held Mondays in Chipman at the Ag. grounds; Bruderheim at the school playground; Lamont at Hillside Park; Mundare at the HUB/Victory Park; and Andrew at the school playground. Free for all attendees the camps started July 12 at 10 a.m. in Chipman.

Programming is either in the morning beginning at 10 and running to 11:30 a.m. or in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Colour Me Crazy, Spectacular Science, Summer Olympics, Wet

’n Wild, Survivor, Games, Games, Games!, and Nerf Rivals are the weekly subjects.

While there is limited attendance people can register with Michelle at the County michelle.a@lamontcounty.ca or phone 780-8952233 ext. 223.

Meanwhile Summer Fun is the name of the program for families with children from newborns to six years old.

Running on Tuesdays at the same five locations, topics for the weekly program include Messy Art, Science Fun, and Nature Nuts.

There is no cost but registration is required a week in advance.

The final program offered by FCSS this summer is Walk and Talk, a program for families with children from newborns to 12 years.

Parents will hear about Triple P Positive parenting strategies while enjoying a stroll with other families.

This program will be held at the Lamont Spray Park, Bruderheim Arena, Andrew Lions Park and Mundare’s HUB/Victory Park. Dates for the program are: July 15 at Andrew at 9:30, and 11:15 a.m. at Mundare.

Fire ban for Lamont County now restrictions

BY JANA SEMENIUK A fire ban in place for Lamont County has been rescinded as of July 7

and replaced with a fire restriction according to Alberta Fire Bans.

While a fire ban can

prohibit most types of fire use within the area, a restriction allows for some safe burning in fire

pits and burning barrels with provisions such as equipping the unit with a metal mesh screen, located on a non-combustible surface and being a minimum of three meters from any combustible materials including buildings.

The Town of Lamont instituted their fire ban on July 2.

Mundare appoints members to assessment board

BY JOHN MATHER Back in May, Mundare council dealt with the recommendations from a municipal review conducted annually by the province.

The review studied town operations and made suggestions on how certain areas could be improved.

One of those recommendations was that the town join the Capital Region Assessment Services Commission for its Assessment Review Board.

At the regular council meeting July 6, CAO Colin Zyla told council its application to join the CRASC was accepted.

Any assessment issues the town now encounters, he explained, would be heard by the CRASC although the members would be appointed locally.

The cost for the mem-

bership to the town is $1,022 per year.

Council passed three readings of a bylaw appointing the members to the board who were; Darlene Chartrand, Tina Groszko, Stew Hennig, Richard Knowles and Raymond Ralph. The appointments will run until Dec. 3, 2021.

In addition, Ralph was appointed as the chairman of the assessment review board and Richard Barham was appointed as the clerk of the board.

Mundare has agreed to donate $250 in response to a request from the Chipman and Lamont Bus/Train Memorial committee.

The committee, led by Tom Hrehorets, is planning to build a memorial to those students who were killed in the 1960 bus/ train collision in Lamont.

Mundare has entered into a new fire agreement with Lamont County. The existing five-year agreement expires at the end of this year.

In presenting the new agreement at the July 8 council meeting, CAO Colin Zyla reported the new agreement was for a 10-year term.

While the County is responsible for all operational costs for the fire department and capital investment related to operations, Mundare will be responsible for the costs of the firehall and any capital improvements to the hall.

Under the new agreement, Mundare will pay $2,415 to Strathcona Dispatch Centre for dispatch services. After a five-year period the agreement can be revisited to renegotiate the fees for service.

Seniors back to socializing

BY JOHN MATHER Lamont County area seniors are out and ready to socialize after well over a year of isolation because of the pandemic.

In Mundare, the seniors were busy making perogies on Friday when contacted.

“We’re having a perogy making bee,” said Mundare Seniors Club president Judy Shaw.

“We don’t know what they’re for yet. We haven’t decided when we’ll have a perogy supper but when we decide we’ll be ready.

“Everybody is happy to be back together.

There’s a lot of chatter going on here this morning.”

The Mundare Seniors Centre opened its doors July 5 with some floor curling.

Shaw said while hugs seemed to be in short supply, everyone was really excited to back together.

In Bruderheim the senior’s club plans to open in August but it all depends on the pandemic restrictions.

“We’re hoping to start meeting twice a week,” said senior’s president Lorna Lawrence.

“We hope to start our community breakfasts on the first Saturday of each month,” she added.

“The costs would go up to $9 person. It’s a

major fundraising for us.

We were scheduled to have a casino, but we know what happened to them. The first breakfast should be on Sept. 11.”

The seniors will also start a community pot luck and it could start in September or be substituted with a corn roast.

Lawrence said the seniors executive had been meeting with social distancing on a regular basis, so their last meeting had been held at the end of June.

She said the group was looking forward to getting together with each other.

“We looking forward to our cards and pool and shuffleboard.”

The senior’s club hopes to hold its annual meeting next February or early March.

“You know even family stuff had to be put on hold,” she said. “So now it’s just so nice to have everyone back together.”

In Andrew, senior Vanessa Ostachek states the seniors were very glad to be able to get back together as well.

“We were feeling very isolated,” she said.

“When we’re told to stay home, as seniors, we obey the order. It was so good to get back and meet with my friends.”

Chipman Hotel to resume live entertainment

BY JOHN MATHER With the pandemic restrictions having come off across Alberta as of July 1, Dave Magee has seen traffic increasing at his Chipman Hotel.

“It’s surprising in some ways,” he said July 10. “Many of the people who have been coming in during the past week are new faces.”

“Maybe they've just discovered we’re open or after six years word is getting out that we’re one of the few hotels in the rural area in Lamont County with live entertainment.”

The Hotel resumes its tradition of weekend live entertainment with a

country revue beginning this weekend.

Moving into the fall, Magee said he is working with some local musicians to put together a local country and western house band that would play when larger acts aren’t brought in.

He added one thing that has happened as a result of the pandemic is he can’t find any staff to hire.

“I’m am looking for some help, but no one seems to be applying.”

He felt it might be because of the Federal CERB payments still being available until the end of the summer.

“And we’re open for others to come out and join us.”

In Lamont, Marvin Eleniak said the senior’s club is now open for floor curling on Mondays and Thursdays at 1 p.m.

“We haven’t started to run our bingo yet, but I expect we’ll get that back up in about a month.”

He said there were 11 who came out for floor curling last week and adds, its open for all seniors to come out and participate.

“We have two floor curling sheets,” he said.

“And we always stay for coffee and snacks afterwards.

“It was really nice to get back in action after such a long layoff.”

Competition was hot at Chipman farriers meet

BY JOHN MATHER Professional farriers from across western Canada converged on Chipman during the past weekend to hone their skills at constructing a variety of horseshoes which were then judged for prizes of farrier tools and cash.

“This was a great opportunity for farriers from around the area and across the western provinces to come together,” said Coyote Country Classic organizer Jessie Robinson.

“These little competitions allow us to come together and work together and as a result we end up bettering one another.

“All the competitors are professional farriers,” he said. “Everyone competing here today make money bent under a horse everyday. It’s our full time job.”

Competing were three farriers from Saskatchewan, four from British Columbia and the remainder were from Alberta. The judges of the competition came from Manitoba.

The Chipman Agricultural Society worked very closely with the farriers allowing them camping at the agricultural grounds and also providing a concession for both lunch and dinner. The competition began July 9 and concluded on July 11.

There were three division during the competition with division one being the entry level division.

Robinson said this was the first time they had hosted an event where everyone made shoes from steel heated in coke ovens.

“Typically the first and second division would work out with gas ovens,” he said.

“Division three usually is out of a coke oven. But this time we had everyone working out of coke so all competitors can get a taste of that.”

He said the gas ovens generally burn to about 2,200 degrees F but the coke ovens burn at 3,600 degrees.

At division one and two, the competitors are given a striker who runs the fire for them, added Robinson.

A team of farriers work together to punch nail holes into a horseshoe during the Coyote Country Classic held over the weekend at Chipman. A coke-fired oven flames behind them as the steel shoes are constantly placed in and out of the fire to keep them malleable for the manufacture of the shoe.

“All they have to do is concentrate on building the shoe.”

The division one competitors built a light draft shoe.

The division two did a journeyman go,” said Robinson. He said this would be a plain stamped set of shoes very similar to what they would do in order to receive their journeymen’s certification at school.

The division three competition saw competitors build draft horse shoes with scotched heels, which Robinson said are traditional field horse shoes.

On Saturday division three competitors had to make cart horse shoes.

He said the cart horse shoes used in England had tabs on the shoes to lock into cobblestones. In old England, he added, the carts didn’t necessarily have brakes and the roads were cobblestone, so the shoes provided both traction for the horse but also acted as a

brake when the horse and cart were stopped because the cleat or tab would dig into the gaps in the cobblestones.

On Sunday, division one and two competed in a live shoeing event. One shoe was made with a concave foot and then they had to make a toe extension aluminum shoe.

“They’ll have to really pay attention,” added Robinson. “Because the aluminum can disappear quickly in a coke oven.”

The division three competitors made a hunter fit shoe which Robinson said was generally used for horses that are travelling fast such as a fox hunter or steeple chase horse.

The day two competitions ran for 70 minutes per competition, while the shoeing on Sunday ran 90-minutes per event.

The timing starts when iron is put in the fire. The fire melts the steel within a couple of minutes.

Using coke, added

Robinson, is very safe because it has to be run with an air blower.

“Unlike coal, which coke is a derivative of, coke needs air to continue burning. When the air supply is shut off on the ovens, the fire quickly goes out.”

The division one and two can receive actual working tools, and because of the costs involved the division three winners get cash prizes to help offset their costs.

While Saturday had a breeze to help offset the unusually warm temperatures, on Friday temperatures inside the Chipman quonset building reached 130 degrees.

Robinson added the easing of the pandemic rules made the event easy to host, although he had been planning it for some time.

“Our industry needed this,” he said. “A lot of us compete in the U.S. and with the border closed we haven’t be able to compete down there for two years.

“And when we can’t compete our work seems to fall behind,” he added.

“We push each other … we make each other work hard.

“By seeing each others work, we better ourselves,” he stated. “So we need there to be competitions, clinics and certification programs.”

Last year, Robinson ran a smaller competition in October with 18 competitors which fell into the social distancing and crowd size regulations.

Blue-green algae advisory issued for Astotin Lake at EINP

BY JOHN MATHER Visitors to Astotin Lake in Elk Island National Park have been warned to take precautions following the discovery of blue green algae blooms at the site by Alberta Health Services.

In a release issued July 12, AHS stated precautions include: avoiding all contact with the bluegreen algae; do not swim or wade or allow your pets to swim or wade in

any areas where bluegreen algae is visible; don’t feed whole fish or fish trimmings from this lake to your pets; and, consider limiting human consumption of whole fish and fish trimmings from this lake, as it is known that fish may store toxins in their liver (People can safely consume fish fillets from this lake).

If any contact does occur, wash with tap

water as soon as possible.

As always, visitors and residents are reminded to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any recreational body of water, including Astotin Lake, at any time. Boiling of this water will not remove the toxins produced by bluegreen algae. An alternate source of drinking water should also be provided

for pets and livestock, while this advisory is active.

Blue-green algae is naturally occurring, the news release added, and often becomes visible when weather conditions are calm.

Appearing like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of water, blue-green algae can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown, and/or pinkish-red, and

often smell musty or grassy.

People who come in contact with visible bluegreen algae or who ingest water containing blue-green algae may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting and/or diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear within one to three hours and resolve in one to two days.

Symptoms in children are often more pronounced; however, all humans are at risk of these symptoms.

Weather and wind conditions can cause algae blooms to move from one location in the lake to another. As such, this advisory will remain in effect for Astotin Lake, until further notice.
