Gone ice fishing Wells Weiss and his family ventured out to the Daysland Trout Pond on December 31, looking for a way to spend the day.

After making a trail through the snow, and drilling through 13 inches of ice, the family set out for a day of catching some rainbow trout. There were numerous bites between the family members before this catch by Weiss.

As 2025 flew by, it sometimes felt too busy to fully pay attention to everything around.

Here’s a recap of things that happened last year.

January 2025

RCMP recorded a win against copper wire theft in Alberta, conducting an initiative that resulted in the arrest of seven individuals.

The Battle River School Division shared information about a cyber security incident involving PowerSchool that affected school divisions across North America.

PowerSchool is a system a lot of schools use for managing student information. The information breach was contained, and BRSD assured families that sensitive information including financial information, student profile photos, or computer passwords were not accessed.

The Wild Rose Co-op raised funds and goods for the Flagstaff Food Bank with the sale of their “Good bye to Hunger,” prepackaged food bags. Co-op members donated a total of $13,292.68 at the till, which Wild Rose Co-op matched, splitting a further $15,000 between Camrose and Flagstaff. The total donated to Flagstaff Food Bank was $20,792.68.

Experts forecast that a planned increase in the federal carbon tax would see home utilities, gasoline/fuel, and even groceries rise in price, along with meat, vegetables, restaurant meals, bakery items, and dairy products.

The Government of Canada announced plans to put Terry Fox on the new $5 bill.

The new notes will be issued after new $20 bills are issued, expected sometime in 2027.

On Monday, Jan. 20, FRESS firefighters from Sedgewick, Killam, and Hardisty were called out to a fire in Sedgewick, where O’Brien Collision Centre and Customs was ablaze. Local businesses assisted firefighters as well, but the building was a complete fire loss.

Alberta’s most popular baby names from 2024 saw Noah at the top for boys, and Olivia in the top spots.

Enrollment numbers were down throughout the Battle River School Division, with three of four Flagstaff schools also recording a drop in students enrolled, with Daysland showing an increase of over eight per cent.

Killam resident Rita Demkiw celebrated her 100th birthday at Killam Long Term Care in January.

The Battle River Knights celebrated their annual Hockey Days Weekend Jan. 24 to 26, with games split between Killam and Sedgewick, and many visiting teams enjoying the day.

February 2025

The Flagstaff Scottish Club held their annual Robbie Burns night, which was a fitting celebration of Scotlands best-loved poet.

On the same night, in Lougheed, the annual FIRST Dinner was also a big success, raising almost $40,000 towards programming for another year. It was the first time it was held in Lougheed.

Killam Firefighter and Deputy Chief Rick Krys received his 30-year Service Pin during the Killam station’s annual gala celebrating local firefighters.

The Killam Wheat Kings welcome a new assistant coach, Carson Welke, who joined Head Coach Nick Mantai behind the bench.

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely held a recognition event in Camrose on Feb. 4, where she honoured some extraordinary community members from around the constituency.

Locally, retired FFCS Executive Director Lynne Jenkinson was one of those honoured

by Lovely. Also honoured was retired Daysland CAO Rod Krips. Lovely also made a grant presentation to the Strome Community Curling Club, who received a Community Facility Enhancement Project Grant for $52,429.

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings ended the regular season on a high with a big win over Onion Lake. The team made the playoffs, and played the Lloydminster Bandits in the first round.

Family Day in Heisler saw the Heisler Archery Club making their range available to archers of all ages.

Piano Heist performed at the DaysArts concert series and brought down the house with their entertaining and often hilarious show.

Valentine’s Day in Killam was a very special affair, with the Brave Girls bible study

group presenting “An Evening in Paris,” at The Living Room theatre.

Patrons were amazed with the variety of displays, food experiences, performances, and movie, in this first of what is to be an annual event.

Over 110 participants showed up in Killam as the Killam Lions Club revived their annual snowmobile rally, taking advantage of the last bits of snow.

Flagstaff County Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski received the Alberta Association of Community Peacer Officers Award of Excellence.

As the 100+ Women Who Care Flagstaff County held their second meeting of their sixth year, their annual ‘Share the Love,’ event, they acknowledged that they had reached a quarter of a million dollars in donations since the group’s inception.

Winners of the Share the Love night were The Killam Legion, Sedgewick Playschool, Alliance Community Garden, and the Lougheed Library.

March 2025

The Sedgewick Ag Society pivoted after cancelling their annual Family Day Snowmobile Rally, they held a joint quad and snowmobile rally to accomodate the melting snow.

Curtain Call Theatre of Forestburg premiered their performance of ‘Death by Golf,’ a hilarious hi-jinx of a show with a zany cast of characters. It was another hit for the Curtain Call players.

The 2025 Sweethearts’ Draw had a special second place draw this year. Jordan and Krista Waldner were the 2025 winners, and Darren and Marge Gausvik won the runnerup prize, since the 2024 winners had never collected their prize.

Local gymnasts Lesianna and Naveena Schmidt, and Aurora Burden competed in Florida Feb. 14-16, all coming home with multiple medals.

KPS students hit the streets of Killam in February, sharing messages of positivity either by hand, or by leaving a post-it note on a vehicle. “Thank you for brightening my day!” said one grateful recipient.

The BRK U18 Females were the A League champions after the season was done and dusted.

The Thunderstars U11 won their Tier Championship as well.

The Alberta Utilities Commission released its decision on the PCA Canada Development of Killam (Old Bear) Solar Farm, granting approval for the project, pending conditions.

Flagstaff County Council has created two new grants, and funded both for 2025, a Tourism Assistance Grant Program, and an additional $100,000 funding for recreation facilities, in addition to the $641K already

budgeted for recreation.

‘Over the Moon’ performed in Forestburg as part of the Forestburg Concert Series on March 15, mesmerizing the local audience with their original songs and incredible vocals and musical talents.

The BRK U18-1 team won the League Championship after travelling to Duchess to compete.

The Lakeview Golf Club announced plans to move ahead with replacement of its 40year-old irrigation and sprinkler system. The Club’s board raised $45,000 towards the $700,000 project, and were pleased to find out they would be receiving $305,000 from the Province’s Active Community Initiative Grant.

Vision Credit Union announced their Helping Hands Grant winners, with eight lucky Flagstaff organizations receiving $48,000. Those included the Valley Ski Hill, Society of the Friends of Daysland School, Hardisty Toddlers Inn Playschool, Killam Lions Club, Flagstaff Food Bank, FIRST, Sedgewick Playschool, and the Lougheed Ag. Society.

Valley Ski Hill held a dual slalom fundraiser March 15 where teams competed for a load of fun while also fundraising for the hill.

DaysArts presented ‘Becoming the Beatles” as part of their 2025-26 and had a packed house with one of their biggest audiences in recent years. The show featured stories and songs that chronicled the Beatles rise to fame.

The Writ was dropped on a federal Election, for Monday, April 28.

A new doctor arrived in Daysland; Dr. Henry Orewa started work at the Daysland Medical Clinic.

Orewa says that he’s absolutely thrilled to be working in a rural community, as it reminds him of his childhood home in Nigeria.

The Sedgewick Sabres swept their series against the Oyen Eagles to become ECSHL Champions for the second year in a row.

The Hughenden U13 Jets won the North Eastern Alberta Hockey League Tier 3 Championship.

The Village of Lougheed had a run on lots in the village, selling 12 vacant lots in the first three months of 2025.

All the lots sold are fully serviced. There is no time limit on which to build, but the village will now be able to collect at least a minimum tax on the undeveloped lots.

April 2025

Battle River Knights U18 players were invited to play in the third annual Jake Lazarick Memorial hockey game, raising $1,040 in the process.

Battle River-Crowfoot incumbant Damien Kurek was the first candidate to officially register in the April federal election.

A horrific accident that took place on Highway 13 at Highway 36 outside Killam claimed the life of a child and sent three others to hospital in serious to critical condition.

The Field family had a Go-Fund-Me fundraiser started to help them with expenses while in recovery. Two of the children and their mother were performers in the Flagstaff Players production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The Players opened the play to rave reviews the weekend before, but cancelled their second set of performances due to the tragedy.

Battle River Railway NGC announced an expansion at Alliance, with five new 900tonne bins added, as well as a third track, which will add the capability of loading 100 cars.

Killam RCMP sought assistance from the public after a break-in at the Vision Credit Union branch in Hardisty. Suspects blacked out the camera lens and entered the building using a torch and power tools, fleeing the scene on an ATV. The Galahad Lions Club celebrated 50 years on Saturday, April 5. Before the celebration they dug up a 31-year-old time capsule from the Galahad Library.

The Flagstaff Scottish Club performed in Lougheed at their annual Tartan Day celebration. This year’s event included performances from the Battle River Pipes and Drums, and a talk and demonstration from local falconer Gary Worley, along with dance performances from the Battle River Dance Academy.

The Wanda School Museum in Forestburg nears readiness as the school, moved from its original site the previous year, has had a complete facelift to turn it into a publicready facility.

The Province of Alberta government banned ‘Code of Conducts’ for all Alberta municipal councils in new legislation. Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver said all too often these were being “weaponized to diminish other members of council; to take away their voices, to silence them, to even hurt them... That was never what it was intended for.”

The second annual Bucking in the Burg went off without a hitch to a packed crowd and thrilling bull riding action. The event featured top riders from across North and even South America.

Former Canadian Canola Growers Association Chair Roger Chevraux sat down with The ‘Press and talked about some of the things he’d worked on while serving as chair, including trade talks in China and Japan.

FIRST’s Care-A-Van got a new van, thanks to support from the Flagstaff community. The old van will be used for local trips. This is the third van the program has had since the program started in 2013 with a big boost from Campbell-McLennan Chrysler.

DaysArts also completed their concert series, wrapping up on a high with Rum Ragged. This Juno-nominated band brought a ton of energy to the Palace Theatre stage, along with a wide range of instruments, some of which were very obscure!

FRESS held its second annual Fire Ball, this time hosted in Killam by the Killam Station.

The evening started with area firefighters being piped into the hall by members of the Battle River Pipes and Drums, then various awards were handed out. This year Todd Baumgartner received their highest FRESS award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Regional Fire Services.”

Seventeen young men and women took to the stage at Daysland School on Friday, May 2 for graduation ceremonies.

Premier Danielle Smith is came to Hardisty this Friday, May 9.

Flagstaff District 4-H Club members brought home some serious hardware after earning top spots in the annual Public Speaking and Presentations categories in 2024.

Forestburg School graduated 12 students this year, with their formal prom held on Friday, May 9, at the Forestburg Community Hall.

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely joined Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in Hardisty on Friday, May 9 as Smith took part in a Q & A session organized by the Hardisty and District Development Group.

Teams ‘Lacin’ up for Ace,’ and ‘Hoofin’ it for Laura,’ along with other members of the public took part in the fourth-annual Hoofin’ it in Hardisty MS Walk this past Saturday, May 10, raising over $8,400 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

The Battle River School Division (BRSD) recently advised that CHSPS has collaborated with the internationally acclaimed literacy expert Penny Kittle to connect with rural BRSD educators on May 30.

Daysland Business Association hosted their own Canada Day celebration in Daysland on July 1, starting out with a bike parade. The event included entertainment, a car show, a barbeque, and was attended by Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely.

Daysland area bull rider Levi Robbins performed in bull riding at the Cloverlodge Stampede in Viking over the weekend.

The Killam Twice Nice Store Society was named as the Flagstaff region winner of the Battle River School Division’s Friends of Battle River award.

Gauge Hockey Camp 2025 was the fifth anniversary of this local camp, hosted by Mat and Bridgett Ponto in Forestburg.

The Hardisty Rodeo Street Fair, held on Friday, July 18, had perfect weather to enjoy a myriad of things to do for all ages. The Hardisty Fire Station members offered an opportunity to shoot a target with a fire hose.

After roughly 700 people enjoyed a free breakfast at the Community Hall, many wandered over to the Street Fair on Main Street Hardisty on Friday, where there was lots to see and do for visitors of all ages. The kids were able to enjoy some high-flying bouncy houses, climbing challenges, and visits with friends, while kids of all ages enjoyed an amazing car show with 55 vehicles of all ages, colours, and types.

Alberta celebrates 75 years rat-free.

Elections Canada announced on Monday, July 28, that due to the high number of candidates (over 209 as of Monday) for the upcoming by-election, voters at advance and election-day polls will be using an adapted ballot.

The Killam Fire Station hosted the second-annual Fire Ball earlier this year, and last Wednesday, donated a portion of the profits from that event to the Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS).

August 2025 Instantweather.ca issued a notice at 4:33 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, that a tornado had been reported with a storm at Hardisty that was moving to the northwest.

The Village of Forestburg hosts its annual summer celebration on Saturday, Aug. 9, with over 20 activities and affairs for all ages.

This year marks the sixth celebration for Forestburg’s birthday, which started on the village’s 100th birthday with no plans on stopping.

Pierre Poilievre stopped at Battle River Implements in Killam on Sunday evening, where he spoke to and met with around 130 people, including local farmer Mabel Thompson, who shared a laugh with him.

Alliance hosted its monthly market.

Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux assumed command of the Alberta RCMP on Thursday, Aug. 7, in Edmonton in front of special guests and RCMP employees.

Pierre Poilievre regained a seat back into the House of Commons with a decisive byelection victory on Monday, August 18.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, over 100 guests celebrated the Beingessner Family’s 25th Annual Pig Roast with great food, lively entertainment, and plenty of laughter.

Brian Bernard of Sedgewick organized a casual garden tour this summer, buoyed by the popularity in previous years.

The seventh annual Gathering of the Clans Highland Festival was another huge success for the Flagstaff Scottish Club.

Last Tuesday, the 16th Annual Movie in the Park brought families and friends together for games and outdoor fun.

September 2025 The Camrose Kodiaks and the Drumheller Dragons faced off in Forestburg on Saturday, Aug. 30 in pre-season AJHL action. The Kodiaks outscored Drumheller 61 in front of a packed house.

Albertans are no longer forced to rely on their old, raggedy paper health care cards, as the Province has rolled out a new digital version. In late August, the ‘Alberta Wallet’ initiative was rolled out, touted as “part of Alberta’s broader efforts to modernize government service delivery and make access to public services more convenient for Albertans.”

Flagstaff Regional Waste Management has recently hired Forestburg Fire Chief, Kevin Lunty, as the new manager, taking over the role previously held by Murray Hampshire.

Area 53 Raceway hosted the Fifth annual Steven Chapman Memorial ‘Full Send’ race this past weekend, with a full roster of racers on both days determined to win one of the many prizes available.

Last Thursday marked Food Truck day at Central High Sedgewick Public School as students, parents, teachers, staff, and the community celebrated the start of the school year with some good eats.

Flagstaff County and The River Jacks recently released a new video that showcases Flagstaff County and the best of rural living, also featuring the original song ‘This is Home to Me.’ Bob and Linda Coutts, along with Jim Anderson, recently travelled to Toronto to take in Home Hardware Stores Limited’s 2025 Homecoming event, on Sept. 10. While they were there, attending the ‘Proud of My Home Achievement Awards and Celebration ‘gala, Coutts received a special award, the Paul Straus Public Relations Award.

The Alberta Teacher’s Association (ATA) announced last Wednesday, Sept 10, that if a deal isn’t reached between the ATA and the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) (the Province) Teachers will be on strike as of Monday, Oct. 6.

A new Metiskow-Czar-HughendenAmisk (MCHA) Women Who Care organization held their first meeting earlier this month in Amisk, and presented the Amisk Senior Society Centre with a cheque for $2,850, which will help update the electrical service in the centre’s kitchen.

October 2025 Lindsey Damberger, Hughenden Library Manager, along with board Chairperson, Liz Hissett, delivered books on horseback this past Sept. 11.

Alberta Teachers voted definitively to reject the Province’s latest offer, as 89.5 per cent of those who registered a vote rejected a memorandum of agreement with the Province. Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) President Jason Schilling called the

decision “resounding and historical.”

Alberta Teachers officially walked off the job on Monday, the official start of the Alberta Teacher’s Association (ATA) strike action, after a huge rally was held in Edmonton on Sunday, Oct. 5, on the steps of the Alberta Legislature.

Killam firefighters served a good-sized crowd on Saturday at their annual Fire Prevention breakfast, and although some members had to leave to respond to a call for service, remaining family members and firefighters stayed on hand to feed the crowd.

Returning firefighters, EMT, and RCMP were invited to a hearty breakfast afterwards as well.

In its 2025, Flagstaff County Council established a Recreation Facilities Grant of $100,000, meant to assist the region’s major recreation facilities.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #65, in Killam, held a formal Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 11, with visiting Armed Services members from Camp Wainwright, along with some special guests who are veterans, members of the RCMP, including an RCMP chaplain, local clergy, and legion members.

After the formal Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, the Killam Legion opened its doors to the public where an extensive display of memorabilia was on hand.

Cst. Lloyd Gardner is the Killam RCMP Detachment’s newest member. He arrived in the region in early October. For the first few months, he will be working with Cst. Logan Ryder in the region.

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely met with Daysland Council and Forestburg Council at the Alberta Municipalities Convention in Calgary last week to offer congratulations, discuss priorities and plans to work collaboratively together.

It’s only been a week but it already feels like more. Last Wednesday, Nov. 19, Mother Nature flipped the switch to ‘winter’ mode,

with quite a bit of snow and cooler temperatures. Many people welcomed the clean white fields and snow-covered trees over the hum-drum brown, and it was a sharp reminder that the high temperatures of fall couldn’t continue forever.

The Central High Lams team is hosting the Provincial Volleyball Tournament in Sedgewick and Killam

December 2025 The Alberta Girls 2A Provincial Volleyball tournament was hosted by the Central High Lams at Central High Sedgewick Public School and Killam Public School from Thursday to Saturday last weekend, bringing 12 teams to the region to compete.

The Lougheed Christmas Market and Turkey Dinner was held last Sunday, Nov. 30, and members of the Rural Roots 4-H club, pictured above, were kept very busy serving turkey dinner to a huge crowd.

Forestburg Christmas Market, held on Saturday, Nov. 29, was packed to the gills, including one very special visitor, Santa Claus.

The CP/CKC Holiday Train rolled early into Hardisty on Sunday evening where lots of people were waiting, after taking part in late-night shopping, bonfires, a Christmas concert, and lots of hot chocolate.

Elections Alberta has announced that it has approved applications for three more UCP MLAs to be recalled, and one NDP MLA, Amanda Chapman. The UCP’s targeted in the latest set include Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, Tanya Fir, and Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services, Adriana LaGrange.

The Battle River Community Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to Flagstaff Satellite Family Day Homes Society Adamson Mini Moos brightened the day of residents at the Killam Long Term Care on the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 10, with their three mini highland cattle, Joey, Belle, and Rue. Hardisty’s application for a charter school has been granted conditional approval. The approval is for a Kindergarten to Grade 6 Charter School, located in Hardisty, to commence operations as soon as September 2026.

The Palace Theatre in Daysland has been hopping lately, not just with their own concert series, where they just welcomed veteran performer John Wort Hannam to open the 2025-26 Concert Series. Hannam played on Wednesday, Dec. 3, to an appreciative crowd. Then this past weekend, on Sunday, local choir Radiant Harmony held their annual Christmas Concert.

Well hello folks. I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and are ready to experience what 2026 has in store for you.

We changed up our menu for this years' Christmas meal. We celebrated on Sunday, Dec. 28 and had our Christmas gathering that day.

No turkey and ham this year.

We barbequed 22 of our own T-Bone steaks and also had homemade hamburgers for a second choice. Baked potatoes, salads, veggies and sweets.

Our gift exchange this year was the Chinese gift exchange game which was a blast. I bought all the gifts at our local Thrift store in Hardisty, so no one had to buy a gift and no one had any idea what the gifts might be.

If you did not care for the gift you opened you could steal from someone else whose gift you really liked. There were moans and shrieks of laughter as this occurred numerous times!

A good time was had by all.

Just before Christmas my hubby and I stopped for a cup of coffee at the Killam Stop Spot. It was coffee time for the regular coffee crowd so we enjoyed a wonderful visit.

I chatted with one retired healthcare worker that I had worked with, She looked so vibrant and darn pretty and was dressed in colours that were so complimentary.

There was just something different about her and that lovely smile.

All at once it came to me.

I bet she was in love! I had not chatted with her for quite a while and didn't keep tabs on her social life. Yes, I knew it, she had that, "I've just been kissed look." When you are young and your hormones are raging what is the first romantic thing you do besides holding hands? It is the first kiss. Right? Our lips are filled with hundreds of heavenly nerve endings that tingle, our lips get more colour and swell up a bit as we anticipate that passionate moment.

Mother Nature is getting us ready for our first fabulous kiss.

Yesiree, you are hooked.

Young love and adult love starts at our face and sooner or later works it's way down and all over our bodies.

Everything gets kissed sooner or later...Yikes.

We are programmed

by Mother Nature to multiply, just like all the animals in the world.

But sooner or later the hormones wain and we get tired.

All the bodily functions are not working at optimal capacity anymore and that is how love and life happens Some folks just can not cope with Natures hormonal decline and have all sorts of plastic surgery, implants, little blue pills etc. But I hope you are not one of them.

Remember as you age you still have a beautiful mind, memories and you have those lovely lips. The kiss will bring back so many memories and as your lover hugs and snuggles you he says,"honey may I give you a Christmas kiss?"...You melt in his arms and your lips touch and your whole

Calving season starts with triplets for local farm Ally Anderson Staff Reporter

The 2026 calving season started off with a bang for local farm Lucky 7 Cattle Co., when in the early hours of January 1, one of their purebred Red Angus females defied the odds and successfully delivered triplets. Stacey Simpson said, “We noticed the five year old cow, 180J, was carrying a good sized baby belly late into her pregnancy and figured maybe twins.

“After having the first calf unassisted and still seeming a little agitated we brought her up and palpated her and sure enough there was another set of feet and a head (the first two calves presented correctly).

“After the second calf was out my dad said you better check again...to which I rolled my eyes. Sure enough shoulder deep in the cow I felt that third set of feet and there began the fishing expedition to retrieve baby number three coming backwards. All three heifers were born alive and healthy.”

The odds are compared to that of winning the lottery, with 1 in 8 million for same sex triplets to be born and survive. But this is not new to Simpson and

her family, as last year they experienced an almost identical situation.

Simpson continued, “What makes this even more shocking is lightning literally struck twice. Triplets are a rare occurrence. We found some dairy verbiage online that said the chances of having triplet heifer calves and them all surviving was odds of 1 in 8 million.

“Somehow we've managed to have them back to back years. Last year out of a twelve year old 180A who had three bull calves and this year out of one of her daughters, five year old 180J. “We scratch our heads because there's no history of multiple births in their lineage; only one random set out twins out of 180A when she was a fourth calver.”

The three calves are named Marla, Darla, and Carla, weighing in at 52, 51, and 56 pounds. Marla is being cared for by her biological mom, while Darla and Carla have been taken in by a nurse cow.

Simpson posted a video of the triplets to the Lucky 7 Cattle Co Facebook page wishing everyone a Happy New Year and the post hit 1.1 million views in two days, and multiple news outlets have reached out to cover the story.

Jets tied the game up twice on goals from Gracie Prokopetz (1g 1a), and Chloe Oh. Isla Waddell picked up an assist and Sarah Mackie stopped 17 between the pipes.

On Sunday the Jets travelled to Lloydminster and dropped an 8-2 game. Gracie Prokopetz and Callie Prost scored while Nova Scott picked up an assist.

Hughenden U15 Female Jets (2-10-2) dropped a 5-2 game at Cold Lake on Dec. 21 with Holly Motley and Piper Pearson scoring and Shelin Fries picking up an assist. On Saturday at St. Paul, Jets dropped a 3-2 game after coming back to tie the game in the third frame.

OBITUARIES

William (Bill) Richard Hawkins

William (Bill) Richard Hawkins was born to Henry and Dorothy (Hanson) Hawkins on November 10th, 1941, and passed away on January 2nd, 2026, at the age of 84 years at the Killam Long Term Care Centre.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons: Gerald Hawkins (Susan Carter), Russell Hawkins (Denise), and Dale Hawkins (Samantha).

Grandchildren: Michael Harrison, Brandon Harrison, Alexandra Harrison-Hawkins, Lynaya Hawkins, Aiden Shultz, and Colton Hawkins. Greatgrandchildren: Kayson Grant and Zander Anderson.

Brother: Eldon Hawkins (Judy). Sister: Laurel Hawkins. Brother-in-law: Dennis Koehli (Pat). Sisterin-law: Laverne Blaeser (Jack).

Bill was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Priscilla (Koehli) Hawkins; his siblings Lucille Horne (Neil), Joan Brockhoff (John), and Randy Hawkins; and his grandson, Korey Harrison.

Bill grew up on the family farm north of Strome. In Grade 9, he quit school due to his father’s deteriorating health, marking the beginning of his lifelong career as a farmer. Although Bill grew grain, his true passion was raising Hereford cattle.

In 1952, he sold his first Hereford bull at the Edmonton Spring Livestock Show

and Sale. The rancher who purchased the bull gave Bill an extra $100 and told him that if a small boy could handle that bull, he thought he could as well.

Although Bill did not sell bulls every year, he was proud to sell his last bull at the Calgary Bull Sale in 2002.

In 1966, Bill and Priscilla were married, and together they purchased their own farm a few miles from the original Hawkins homestead. They spent the next 30 years there, raising a family and building a cow herd.

After moving to town, Bill still went out to the farm every day. As time went on, his body began to deteriorate, but his interest in the day-to-day operation of the farm never faded.

Although he was no longer actively helping with the cows, he could still be found driving around, checking things out.

Weekly trips to the auction mart became a regular routine to pass the time and keep an eye on market trends—provided he was home in time to take Priscilla to bingo. In February 2021, Bill was given the opportunity to move back to the farm. It was a very short conversation; before anything was packed or loaded, he was already sitting in the truck.

With modern technology, Bill was able to take part in calving season once again.

Armed with the camera remote, he kept an eye on everything in sight. CNN was on one TV, and the cows were on the other. This also gave him the opportunity to listen to bull sales every day on the computer, faithfully

writing down prices—at least until he fell asleep.

When the time came to move into Long Term Care, the computer went along with him.

As a resident of Long Term Care, bus rides into the country were always a highlight. Most of the time, Bill would “sweet talk” the bus driver into taking him past the farm so he could see what was happening. Right up to the very end, he needed a daily report on what took place. Even without being there, he still wanted to give advice and be involved.

Bill held several special titles in his lifetime that meant a great deal to him—most notably, President. He served for a number of years as President of the Strome Agricultural Society, a role he took very seriously and dedicated much time and effort to.

Bill was also President of the Wavy Lake Cemetery and President of the Resident and Family Council at the Long Term Care Centre.

Additionally, Bill was named Director of his hunting camp, an honour commemorated with a hand-carved memento.

The family of Bill would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, nurses, health aides, volunteers, and everyone involved at the Killam Long Term Care Centre. Many took extra time to visit with Bill, which meant so much to him.

A special thank you is also extended to his good friend Art, for spending so much time with Bill over the past four years. The family will be forever grateful for the care

and kindness shown to Bill during his time there—it truly made his days better.

As per Bill’s request, no service will be held. His ashes will be interred at the Wavy Lake Cemetery at a

later date.

If family and friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Killam Long Term Care Centre (Recreation Department), the Parkinson’s Society, or a

charity of one’s choice.
