Part 1 - a look back at the year that was January The Alberta government began rolling out the first COVID-19 vaccines, initially targeted towards senior citizens living in long term care facilities. As of January 11, 50,000 doses had been administered province wide.

January 11 saw students return to in person classes after months of online only learning, with the year split into quarters rather than semesters.

Parents and students will have the option to continue their education online or remain in physical classrooms. This decision will have to be made by January 21, and the chance to make a different or same choice each quarter.

Members of the Vialta Lodge brainstormed to come up with positives that came out of 2020, including one resident saying they were no longer lonely after moving into the lodge. Another was grateful for winning a $70 lotto ticket. Other highlights included holiday festivities and of course the development of COVID-19 vaccines.

Viking Health Foundation was granted a request for funding from Beaver County Council. They were given a 2020 grant allocation of $7133 to be used for enhancing health care in the facility.

The Viking Council renewed their bylaw officer contract with J.A.G. Security, and gave the go ahead to issue tickets rather than warnings for common offences. Some of the most common issues seen in the community are parking violations, noisy dogs, and snow removal issues.

A massive windstorm caused significant damage to two Irma businesses, causing them to close for repairs. The Long Branch and the Irma Motel required serious fixes after severe damage to their roofs.

Vegreville RCMP made three arrests in relation to a drug trafficking operation. 14 grams of a substance believed to be Fentanyl and 18 grams of suspected Methamphetamine were seized in the arrest.

Councillor Clint Nearing requests that wish list items that were an early part of council’s four-year term be addressed. Examples included council conducting tours of facilities in town and setting up reserve funds as items that council has yet to make happen. Councillor Debbie O’Toole-Balaban pointed out that one of their wish list items had been fulfilled, that being the new Daycare on main street.

After 55 years of research, local historian Peter McArthur's book detailing the life of explorer Anthony Henday was published. The book describes Henday's travel to what is now the province of Alberta with a young Indigenous woman called Pearl.

McArthur's book is available on Amazon, and the front cover is illustrated by a young Viking resident, Aaliyah Gosselin.

Viking/Beaver FCSS has several new programs in the works, many of which are focused on mental health, especially amidst the on going presence of COVID-19. Programs will include Rainbows, a program focused on aiding children through grief, a take-a puzzle, leave-a-puzzle station outside, as well as a physical literacy program later in the year.

As expected, the Viking/ Beaver FCSS saw a dramatic increase in demand for the 2020 Christmas hampers. A total of 80 hampers were delivered, a sharp increase from last years 69. Holden's number's remained steady at 27 hampers but Viking delivered 53 in total.

February Work began on the service road running through Viking was widened slightly to better accommodate increased truck traffic. In addition to widening it, the pedestrian bridge and culverts were replaced for better drainage, and the ditches were sloped better to allow the town to mow easier. The work is expected to be finished by the end of March.

The Town of Viking has plans to host a skills development program at the Carena. The plan stems from expectations for the Province to ease some COVID restrictions in February. Don McLeod, Viking CAO, says the high interest stems mainly from many rinks being unable to put in ice because of the pandemic.

The Government of Alberta plans to launch funding of $17 million for local communities and groups who have suffered under COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions. This money is to help groups who rely on live events for income, like Ag Societies and Performing Art groups.

The Town of Vikings old Civic building will be the new home of the New to You thrift store, adjacent to the FCSS/ BESC and food bank building.

The top floor will be occupied by Mission to Many in the near future.

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely attended the Holden Municipal Library and Viking Municipal Library to read a book helping emphasize the importance of connection and the belief that good things can still happen during this time.

After a moderate winter, the region was in the grip of a polar vortex, plummeting temperatures.

Buses were cancelled for the better part of the current week, with the same resuming for the forseeable future.

Despite the cold temperatures, many residents came out to participate in the Winter Walk Day which took place on the new Viking Walking Trail.

The trail is being spearheaded by the Viking Community Wellness Society to provide a safe and beautiful path for people to be active year round.

The increased costs associated with COVID precautions in schools mean that education costs have risen. In addition to the costs related to keeping teachers and students safe while in physical classrooms, $1.4 million was contributed to at-home learning programs.

The Irma Men's Club presented a cheque for $10,000 to the chair of the Wainwright and District health Foundation. The money was raised through a grain drive supported by local farmers. The money went towards fundraising for a new CT scanner.

A province-wide warning was issued surrounding scams claiming to sell COVID-19 vaccines online. The scam is targeted towards senior citizens, and often aims to gain personal information such as passwords. AHS says that vaccines will be made available for free to any Albertan who wants one and that they will never be asked to pay for one.

Viking RCMP, with the help of Killam RCMP, executed a search warrant on a rural property for a male wanted on several outstanding arrest warrants stemming from Viking, Coronation, and Edmonton. During the investigation, police obtained a subsequent search warrant and seized several items, including a firearm, controlled drugs and substances, and stolen property.

Viking and Irma agricultural societies both opted to host their fundraisers online again. Viking chose to host an online auction, while Irma opted to have an online 50/50 raffle. Agricultural groups throughout the province depend on the funds raised at these kinds of events to pay for much of their yearly expenses.

Viking/Beaver FCSS requested $13,665.25 as the Town's share of funding for the program. This represents 20 per cent of their municipal share for 2021.

The province opened COVID-19 vaccines for all individuals aged 75+. Previously they were only available to those living in care facilities. This marks the beginning of Phase 2 of Alberta's reopening plans.

A survey conducted by the Canadian Mental Health Association found that 44 per cent of rural Albertans have faced increased mental health problems because of the challenges posed by the pandemic. Some key issues highlighted in the results of the survey were lack of socialization and time with family, economic concerns, and anxiety about the future.

Viking CAO Don McLeod gave a quick brief to council prior to the meeting, including updates about the status of the Carena, which opened to 10 people at a time, and an update from the bylaw officer concerning several minor issues.

Holden is looking forward to the building of a Serenity Garden around The Gallery. The garden will allow visitors to appreciate local art while surrounded by plants and flowers.

Residents of the Vialta Lodge have been keeping busy for the last several months, and all are looking forward to their vaccination day on March 1. Letters from the Holden 4-H club were also a hit and brought joy to many in the lodge.

The Alberta government has continued plowing ahead with vaccine rollouts; the goal is to have the majority of the province vaccinated by the end of June. So far only those in the 75+ group have been eligible to get the shot.

MLA Jackie Lovely began her Youth Internship Incentive Program which is aimed at incentivizing employers to support integrated work programs in the trades and tech. There are a variety of funding options available to employers depending on their commitment to providing work hours.

Marion Cottrell, a local quilter, dedicated a portion of her 'Scrappers Delight' to the 22 lives that were lost in Nova Scotia in April of 2020 in a shooting.

The start of Phase 3 of Alberta's reopening plan was put on hold as case numbers increase across the province. Health Minister Tyler Shandro and CMOH Dr. Deena Hinshaw both attribute the spike in cases with lax attention to guidelines, as well as too few vaccines provided by the federal government.

The Town of Viking has plans to begin the process of eliminating dilapidated buildings in the community. The process requires issuing warnings from a lawyer before anything can proceed as far as actual demolition.

Plans for Bill 55 would strengthen the Alberta education system by creating a professional organization for school superintendents. According to Rita Marler, superintendent of BRSD, something like this has been identified as a need for the last 15 years and it would provide important accountability and leadership opportunities.

The Viking Daycare re-opened, and has seen increased demands following the lessening of restrictions. Some individuals have expressed interest in an over-night daycare operation to better accommodate frontline and night shift workers.

The Town of Viking signed an agreement for Beaver County Community Peace Officers to begin conducting traffic enforcement along local highways.

Emphasis was placed on the fact that this is traffic enforcement, not bylaw enforcement. The proposal will need to be presented by June before being issued officially.

Beaver County saw a slight jump in active COVID cases; now up to four. The MD of Wainwright has eight total cases, as does Flagstaff County. Dr. Hinshaw has expressed concern at the rapidly increasing cases of the variant, and continues to urge people to do their part to stay safe, including getting vaccinated and continuing to follow public safety guidelines.

April The province moves back to phase one of its reopening plan as the third wave rises. Experts say

increasing variants, which make up roughly 40 per cent of active cases, are at risk of outpacing vaccination efforts.

Viking resident Violet Lancaster celebrated a major milestone- her 100th birthday. Violet was able to celebrate outside Vialta Lodge while friends and family alike stopped by to wish her well.

BRSD looks to introduce parts of the new K-6 curriculum into classrooms. The main changes focus on a stronger emphasis on literacy, numeracy, practical skills, and citizenship, all of which is aimed at giving students a stronger base education.

Ahead of Volunteer Week, Viking/Beaver FCSS has plans to honour local volunteers with gift packs.

There are also plans to plant trees along the Viking Walking Trail to better memorialize the exceptional efforts by local volunteers.

Increased case numbers in the BRSD area has prompted Hay Lakes school to temporarily switch to online learning for two weeks. This is largely due to increased absences of students.

After concern from teachers and parents, BRSD has reversed its previous decision to pilot parts of the new K-6 curriculum in the fall. BRSD released a statement saying that teachers were apprehensive to work with new material in addition to tackling the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.

Beaver County's Community Peace Officer Rick Ells joined council to discuss the CPO's new role in traffic enforcement along local highways.

MLA Jackie Lovely says she's willing to help Viking spearhead efforts to be repaid by the Alberta government for cleanup efforts along S.H 619. The town paid the initial costs to clear up contamination discovered during a construction project with the expectation that the government would be repaying them.

The Viking Soccer Club announced the cancellation of the 2021 season due to the ongoing pandemic and restrictions. They expressed their hope that 2022 sees a return to the pitch.

The community has rallied around a senior citizen living north of Viking who lost her home and possessions in a devastating fire. People could donate either to a GoFundMe, or contribute set up in Edie Hoffman's name through the ATB and Credit Union.

Viking was the latest community to host a mental health check stop, hosted by local officers. The aim of the check stop was to promote mental health and provide resources such as agencies, phone numbers, and websites.

A ceremonial sod turning was held ahead of plans to plant trees in honour of volunteers in the community. Usually a luncheon is held, but this years tree planting will be a more permanent legacy and will be part of the new walking trail project.

May 82 students and 7 staff members at Viking School were added to quarantine after coming in contact with positive cases at the school. This comes after Premier Jason Kenney announced further restrictions for the province and schools moved back online for two more weeks.

The Viking Firehall is looking forward to the addition of a new bay, funded in part by the Lois Child memorial fund. The bay will house the new rescue vehicle, and will cost $150,000. Beaver Emergency Services Commission Board will be contributing $50,000 while the remaining $100,000 will be provided by the memorial fund.

Results from the Viking/Beaver FCSS COVID-19 Wellness Survey came in, and highlighted some of the concerns felt in the community. Sixty-seven per cent of respondents felt that COVID had negatively affected their mental and physical health, and that many people were concerned about the future in the pandemic.

Gift presentation to Doug Coubrough from Irma Council Doug Coubrough was elected to Council first in 1992 and has served with the Village of Irma for 29 years.

Doug was Mayor from 2003 to 2011 and again for the year 2013.

The Village greatly appreciate his efforts over the years and his wisdom and insight into municipal matters will be closely missed. We wish him and Helen all the best and look forward to his contributions in some of his Board commitments in 2022.

Ever the great politician he his Doug has already volunteered for the Cemetery Board for 2022! Way to go Doug. Thank you.

Letter: Can’t vote facts WEEKLY REVIEW Dear Editor; The nature of Pluto might change again as some scientists want it returned to its planetary status.

Really it doesn't matter that much whether it is a planet or not but let's not vote on it.

Now, as a retired science teacher, I can remember teaching the scientific method which was based on observation and experimentation but never voting.

Pluto was voted out by a count of 237 votes in favour, 157 against although many people had left before

the discussion and vote.

What worries science teachers and probably most scientists is that people can establish a 'fact' by voting on the matter.

Perhaps we should vote on whether the Earth is flat or not, it won't be zero per cent for flat as some people do believe that the earth is flat or at least say they do.

Science must be based on fact!

Vialta Lodge Chatter: Happy New Year to readers Marion R. Cottrell Vialta Lodge

December rushed by so quickly for me I failed to get my Chatter into the paper in time to be printed so this will be a December and January chat.

Vialta Lodge houses 45 seniors who are all grateful for the freedom to welcome family and friends to come and visit us now.

As of Monday, December 27, all visitors MUST enter at the front door and present proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID test.

You may share a meal or gather for coffee with who ever you came to visit — IF you are fully immunized ! If you are NOT immunized, you may still come to visit but it will be in a room set aside for such visits.

Our December entertainers focused on Christmas music. What a joy that was!

Our Christmas Party on December 3 was wonderful as Onel Potgieter sang songs celebrating the birth of Christ and a few popular secular Christmas tunes. She also shared some of her own memories of Christmas. To add an extra special touch, at the end of the concert, the Potgeiter children presented each resident with a bag full of gifts. An early Christmas surprise !

In December we also enjoyed the singing of Joe

Petras, Darlene, a group of four from the Viking Hutterite Colony and an on-line viewing of the Kindergarten children singing. Torlea Flats entertained us one afternoon and on December 31, Debbie Hill and her brother Mark Wemp played and sang ‘The Blues’ and Western songs. Thanks to every one who came to share your music with us.

In spite of the bad weather and road conditions on December 14 Personal Touch Fashions set up in our Atrium.

Then on December 17 a few vendors displayed their goods at a Christmas Market. In-house chances to shop for self or loved ones.

On Friday December 17 the noon meal of pizza and doughnuts was supplied by “The Viking Elves and Helpers”. We do not know if these Elves come straight from the North Pole or if they reside locally. They also blessed us each with a bag of gifts just before Christmas. Thank you for thinking of us and treating us in such a special way, Viking Elves and Helpers.

Beginning in December residents have had opportunity to watch a movie on Sunday and Wednesday afternoons.

Mostly we’ve been selecting Christmas movies. It helps to pass the afternoons and , if we choose such, we can have some

good chuckles!

Many residents enjoyed watching the Parade of Lights as it passed in front of Vialta. The Handi Van took a slow evening tour around town with those who wanted to see the outdoor Christmas displays. Such variety and so many wonderful colors to brighten the wintery streets. A big high-five to each home owner who made the time and exerted the effort to decorate your yards. You all deserve special recognition for the joy you add to the season.

This lingering cold snap has kept most of us indoors, bundled up in extra sweaters and exceedingly grateful for our efficient snow removal crew. It is nice to not be responsible for shovelling when the temperature dips to -30 C and lower.

We regret to report Eileen Borden moved on to a higher level of care.

Carol Hafso became a resident while she recuperates from surgery. We hope she enjoys our “Vialta family” enough to decide to stay with us after she has fully recovered. On January 1, 2022, John Baumgartner joined our ranks. Welcome.

Deputy Reeve opposes “boiler plate” code of conduct bylaw Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council has a new Code of Conduct bylaw following a split motion for third and final reading at the December 15 regular meeting.

The dissenting voice was Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3), who felt that a code compiled by council was preferable to what he described as a “boiler plate,” or generic style document.

Hrabec also opposed the addition in the bylaw of a clause under Section 20 entitled “Compliance and Enforcement,” which states that sanctions can be imposed by council upon a councillor “upon a finding that the member has breached this bylaw.”

Council was considering adding to the list of breaches that of failure

to comply with a “requirement to attend training.”

Hrabec stated that purpose of the code of conduct bylaw was for council to develop its own document as a team building effort.

“I believe our previous one was picked apart,” he said, but “that bylaw is our work together.”

He didn’t believe in taking out the previous bylaw fashioned by council “and putting in a boiler plate” to replace it.

Hrabec also said that the new bylaw “adds a lot of grey to all of our conduct…It covers other stuff we do on a daily basis outside of council business.”

And he clarified his position: “I’m against how this is presented, I’m not against a code of conduct (for council).”

Division 2 Councillor Lionel

Williams asked if Hrabec wanted council to do the work of crafting the bylaw themselves.

Hrabec appeared to agree, stating that “as a group…we can sit down and develop our own code of conduct, discuss the issues and see how to develop it.”

He noted that “one of the weaknesses” cited in the recent corporate governance review was an issue around confidentiality.

While he was “okay” with what he called a “boiler plate” approach to the bylaw, Hrabec said he wanted to “vote on it and move on.”

A motion was passed to amend the bylaw to add the clause regarding sanctions if a councillor failed to attend training ordered by council.

Hrabec voted against it before asking: “What is the training that

council deems mandatory?”

Interim CAO Margaret Jones replied that the bylaw “doesn’t specify, it depends on what training is tailored,” for a particular breach of the code of conduct bylaw.

“Is that any training that council directs?” Hrabec asked.

Both Williams and Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) pointed out that the new bylaw refers to “the sanctions that may be imposed on a member by council.”

“I think that’s the answer,” said Williams.

Council passed a second motion for third and final reading on the amended bylaw, with Hrabec again opposing the motion.

Then all of council signed the new Code of Conduct bylaw which had just been passed.

County Council passes interim budget Patricia Harcourt The county’s 2022 interim budget was passed at the December 15 meeting of Beaver County Council.

The interim budget allows the county to continue operations until the final budget is approved, likely in April.

Director of Finance Ed Bujnowicz then presented the county’s 5-Year Financial Capital Plan, for council’s information.

Bujnowicz noted that assessment revenue is expected to go down in the third and fourth year of the plan. As a result, he expects the county to be in a deficit situation for the 2023-26 fiscal years.

Pointing to a graph in the report, he said it “shows a big deficit every year,” and posed the question of

how the county will deal with this reality, either by raising revenues or raising taxes.

As for 2022, the budget will be a balanced one, but he indicated that once assessments in oil and gas start dropping the county will be facing a shortfall in revenue.

He suggested one scenario where the loss of assessment could be met by slightly raising taxes (2.773 per cent) per year so the pain will be less for the ratepayer over time.

The other scenario would be to address the issue year by year as is the case now, but which could end in a “drastic increase” in taxes to offset loss in assessment.

Interim CAO Margaret Jones said the principle is to avoid the spike by increasing taxes over time to mitigate the impact on the taxpay-

er.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) recalled when the council of five years ago addressed that issue with just such a plan. However, after municipal elections the new council did not proceed with it.

Essentially, it involved yearly increases to offset loss in assessment.

The county’s new public participation process will seek out what ratepayers want in terms of these scenarios, he said.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) felt it was better to “front load” higher taxes than have it happen later. “It’s an easier pill to swallow politically,” he said.

He preferred the largest increase at the beginning of the five year plan, then decrease it as the years

progress. But Bujnowicz said council had already conditionally approved a balanced budget for 2022 with a zero mill rate increase.

Division 3 Councillor Lionel Williams agreed that the five-year scenario of small increases every year “is a lot more reasonable for people to accept and manage financially.”

Smook said council is faced with three options: frontloading the tax increases, keeping it steady over the years, or backloading it to later years.

And Hrabec said that the county’s assessments could go up five per cent “and then we wouldn’t have to worry about it.”

“They could go down, too,” said Smook.

Beaver County denies tax waiver requests Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council split on opinions regarding waiving tax penalties for two county ratepayers with the majority voting against the requests so as not to set a precedent.

Deputy Reeve Gene Hrabec (Division 3) was in favour of granting the requests, citing the fact that two oil and gas companies had their tax penalties waived in 2021.

But Interim CAO Margaret Jones also pointed out that both companies approached the county to arrange a payment schedule ahead of time so penalties were never imposed. And both companies were paying their taxes in full according to their agreements.

Jones said the two taxpayers asking for a waiver at the December 15 meeting had already exceeded the deadline for payment and have had the penalties imposed upon them.

“Beaver County tax notices were mailed on May 14, 2021,” she stated, in her report.

“Taxes were due upon receipt and, if not paid by October 31, 2021 (November 1, 2021 this year), penalties were levied.”

The first request came from a resident who wrote a letter stating he had mailed the payment on time.

Jones said that, although the county may believe the ratepayer, “no postmark on the envelope can be seen (and) the policy is to have the postmark on the envelope,” as proof on when the mailing took place.

“Normally, we would see a faint mark on it,” to indicate a postmark, but there was no hint of a postmark on the envelope.

“I’m not saying the person didn’t mail it, not at all,” she said, but all there was on the envelope was the receiving postmark only.

The second request involves a person who passed away, and the executor of the estate asking for a waiver as he was unaware of the taxes being owed, assuming they had already been paid.

“We sympathize absolutely with the situation, absolutely,” said Jones, noting the county has had other requests of a similar nature in the past.”

But she said that, even so, the policy needs to be followed.

Hrabec spoke to Councillor Dale Pederson’s (Division 5) for the county to

proceed as per administration’s recommendation to deny the requests.

“I’m speaking against it,” he said. “We just did it for some of our gas companies,” referring to the payment options agreements made earlier in the year with them. Hrabec said he considered these agreements to be precedent setting to allow them for others as well. He asked for a recorded vote.

But Division 2 Councillor Lionel Williams disagreed, stating: “We have to stick with the policy.”

“I appreciate where people are coming from,” calling the situations “unfortunate.”

But he predicted that, “if we open that door, it will be a flood,” of requests that would come in from other ratepayers. He said that deviating from the policy means “setting ourselves up” for hundreds or even thousands of such requests.

Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1) also noted that the gas companies “were up front” about their financial situations and dealt with the problem in advance and the county “takes that into consideration.”

The motion was passed with Hrabec opposed.

The Kinsella Transit Mis made a generous donation of new sand for the Viking Equine Outriders 4-H club, much to the delight of riders. The sand is perfectly suited to all sorts of equine sports and will provide a safer environment for horses and riders alike.

Viking Council expressed its support in keeping RCMP in force, rather than switching to a provincial police force as was suggested by the provincial government.

The idea has faced pushback from small communities throughout Alberta, largely because they would be responsible for footing the costs of the new force.

Beaver County East has a 45 per cent vaccination rate for first doses, something the community can be proud of. Cases of COVID-19 have dropped slightly within Viking, but rose in the Tofield area.

There's a total of 20,013 active cases throughout the province.

The Viking Beef 4-H Club was also able to hold their achievement day outdoors after AHS granted 4-H clubs special permission to hold their achievement days.

Between the 12 members, 19 animals were shown and the 2020-2021 year

Viking/Beaver FCSS worked with Camrose agencies to help secure funding that will be allocated to helping survivors of sexual assault in the area. While the Viking/ Beaver FCSS would not be receiving any part of the $12.6 million allocated for agencies throughout Alberta, two Camrose agencies who work closely with the local FCSS would be receiving some funding.

Several sightings of young black bears in recent weeks have sparked some concerns with residents of Beaver County. People are cautioned to keep their distance and to avoid cooking with windows and doors open so as to not

A one day vaccine clinic was held at the Viking Community Health centre, and was open to those needing their first dose only. 24 individuals were vaccinated, including three under the age of 18.

Registration for 2021's Summer Fun program opened up again. The program, which is put on by Viking/Beaver FCSS will be done virtually again this year due to the continued presence of COVID-19. Personalized take home kits are part of the plan for 2021's edition of the program.

The Serenity Garden surrounding The Gallery in Holden is well underway, with plans to add flowers, trees and shrubs now that the border has been established. The garden will also add solar lights and other decor items.

Both the Cloverlodge Stampede and the Bruce Stampede have begun making tentative plans to return in 2021. The events will have to wait until July, and are contingent on

the province being fully reopened for summer with no restrictions in place.

Premier Jason Kenney announced a $3 million lottery aimed at increasing vaccination rates in Alberta. The lottery will consist of 3 $1 million draws, and every Albertan aged 18 or over with both doses is eligible, and the draws will be staggered in coordination with the various reopening stages.

Amanda Cox began her new role as CAO in the Village of Holden. A resident of Camrose, Cox is no stranger to the administrative duties required for her role, and she looks forward to getting to know the community.

Viking School's graduating class of 2021 finally saw its day. While COVID kept members of the public away, staff and families were able to come together to give the grads a heartfelt congratulations on their hard work and wish them the best.

A pet food drive at the Viking Holden and Area Food Bank was held to memorialize Sierra Loades, an avid animal lover who passed at age

12. The aim was to help pet owners who may be struggling to feed their animals, and saw a wide range of pet foods being donated. The food bank also received over $900 in cash donations.

Viking/ Beaver FCSS lost its Independent Living Skills worker after AHS announced that AHS Addiction and Mental Health for the Central Zone would be taking over the role. While AHS assures communities the program will be run the same, many have concerns about potential changes, including who will be able to use the services.

The extreme heat wave that gripped much of the province prompted the local water commission to place restrictions on the use of potable water for the foreseeable future, until the heat has passed.

The Irma Golf Course held two successful tournaments, one aimed at junior golfers, and the other a Farmers Tournament. 27 golfers aged seven to 17 turned out for the Juniors' Tournament, and 13 teams participated in the Farmers Tournament.

OBITUARY

John Leslie Mattinson

(September 15, 1938 December 26, 2021) John Leslie Mattinson of Camrose Alberta, formerly of Viking, Alberta passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, December 26, 2021, at the age of 83.

John was born on September 15, 1938, to William and Jane Mattinson of Viking Alberta. He was raised on the family farm south of Viking with older siblings Rosemary, Tom, and Bill. He attended Cromer and Viking school and was a lifelong learner.

On January 9, 1965 he married the love of his life Sharon Rae Fortier of Hinton, Alberta. Their union was blessed with three children: Stan, Leaha, and Stacie.

John was devoted to his wife and family, had a deep faith and strong moral code (…and a bit of a stubborn nature.) He had respect for the land he farmed and all nature’s creatures. He took joy in sharing his “loves” with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He loved camping and fishing. John was a real MacGyver and could fix almost anything. He was a man of determination, perseverance, and encouragement to others, opening the door to the farm more than once to people who needed refuge. He was playful throughout the years with every age of family members. He initiated countless foot races, games of baseball, soccer, wrestling matches.

In the winter there were snowball fights, sledding, skating, and skidooing parties complete with square bale seating and a blazing fire, roasting hot dogs and hot chocolate. John flooded the pond and scraped

the ice for Sharon to figure skate and the kids to ‘twirl’ with grandma and play pond hockey.

Equally important was the time made for gathering at the kitchen table for coffee and homemade cookies.

John was a very private man and the friendships formed over the years were bound with trust and integrity. He enjoyed bantering over politics, farming and strategizing over the next machinery repair.

John adored his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, enjoying each one as they grew and developed their own special talents and careers, beaming with pride with each accomplishment.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 57 years, Sharon; his son Stan (Rita) and their children Krysta (Nathan), Mason, Stanly; Kyle (Carley) Sonny, Maeve, Jude; daughter Leaha and her children Rogan (Elise) Xiomarra, Thyodore; Leslea (Jeff), Isaac, Jordan; daughter Stacie (Murray), and their children Jaida (Lane), Justin and Nicholas; his brother Bill (Joyce) Mattinson; sisterin-law Pauline Mattinson; in-laws Wendy (Ron) Whittleton, Lori Fortier, Gerry (Karen) Fortier, Line Fortier; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents William and Jane; sister Rosemary; brother Thomas; nieces Laureen and Maureen; greatniece Brittany Taylor; and brother-in-law George Fortier.

A private family service was held. A recording of the funeral mass will be available for viewing on the St. Francis Xavier Church website; stfxcamrose.caedm.ca/ under "Recorded Masses".

Helping others quietly without fanfare was John’s practice. He was humble and kind.
