Just before Christmas the Sedgewick Sabres invited the Coronation Royals in for a 4-0 whooping, to jump to second place in the league.

Derek Chevraux opened the scoring in the first, from Chase Schatschneider and Connor Metz to put the Sabres ahead by one.

The Sabres scored three more in the second period, starting with Clay Lang from Dean Brodie and Curtis McKinlay, then Quinn Johnson stuffed one in, from Lang and Kurtis Clarkson. Finally Evan Armstrong scored the fourth Sabres goal, from Cole Borth and Dalton Zemanek.

There was no scoring in the third period, but plenty of action on the ice with a bunch of penalty minutes assigned to both teams.

Earning the shutout for the Sabres was Matthew Gaume, who stopped 25 of 25 shots on goal.

The Sabres will get a long break, as they won’t play again until Friday, Jan. 14 when they travel to Provost to take on the league-leading Combines, then return home Saturday, Jan. 15, to face the Stettler Imperials.

We had a nice little

Christmas concert in the United Church on Dec. 21.

Dell and Randy Wickstrom celebrated a wedding anniversary on Dec. 30. They celebrated by going for Chinese dinner in Killam.

I had a nice, long hour visit with Ann Nelson, she is out in Saskatchewan with her

twin granddaughters.

She says the two of them are keeping her and Lisa really, really busy. She sent me a picture; the twins look nothing alike.

She says their personalities are also very different.

I had a New Year's greeting from Mariella Ferretti in Chile. Andrea Balaz sent a message

from Prague. Andrea is a cousin of Elizabeth Gaal, I got to know her a few years ago when she visited Alliance. I had a Facebook message from Adelaide, Australia, from my niece Laura Burke and then I had a message from Joyce in Nyeri, Kenya. I also had a chat with Norma French See ALLIANCE P6

Wheat Kings drop to second behind Wainwright Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings had a busy schedule leading up to Christmas, starting with a trip to Vermilion to face the Tigers on Thursday, Dec. 16, where they came away with a 3-2 win.

On Saturday, Dec. 18, the team travelled to Cold Lake to take on the Ice where they lost 3-2.

Then on Wednesday, Dec. 22, Killam hosted the Wainwright Bisons but lost 3-2.

The Bisons opened the scoring in the first, but the Wheaties caught up with a late-period goal by Ashton Kelly from Trey Forster.

Killam pulled ahead with a goal from Kyler Bergseth in the second period, assisted by Landon Kelndorfer and Brendan Erick, but the Bisons tied it up late in the period to go into the third tied 2-2.

The Bisons got on the scoreboard early in the third to take the 3-2 win for the night.

Things were tense between these two rivals, as evidenced by a big fight early in the second that sent three Bisons and one Wheat King player off with 10 minute misconducts.

Things continued to be rough right into the third.

The next night the Wheaties travelled to Wainwright for game two and again came away empty handed after a 5-2 loss.

The Bisons got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the first period.

Killam scored it’s first goal in the second, from Brandon Zunti, assisted

by Kobe Charchun and

Kelly. Wainwright scored two more in the second to go into the final period ahead 3-1.

The Wheat Kings rallied to within one a goal

by Kobe Charchun, from Kelly and Zunti, but two more from the Bisons solidified their 5-2 win.

The Wainwright Bisons lead the league with 42 points, with the Wheat Kings at second place

and 37 points, and the St. Paul Canadiens in third with 36 points. In fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively are the Vermilion Tigers, the Lac La Biche Clippers, and the Lloydminster Bandits.

Kobe Charchun continues to lead the league in scoring, with Kale Hurlburt popping up to fourth place, Ashton Kelly to sixth, and Carter

Burton in 11th.

Ty Marcinkowski sits second in the Goalie leaderboard, with a 2.54 GAA and .926 save percentage.

The Wheat Kings will travel to St. Paul this weekend to take on the Canadiens.

The next home game for the Wheaties is Sunday, Jan. 16 against the Lloydminster Bandits.

In the Field: Understanding soil test results Many of you may do an annual soil test. Are they an accurate reflection of available soil nutrients?

A soil test is only as good as the sampling method. You soil sample for several reasons. The first is to assess the fertility status of the soil to make informed fertilizer purchases and applications. It can monitor longer term changes to soil fertility and characteristics and identify poor fertility areas, requiring separate management to improve production.

The most common and oldest kind of soil test is a field average. Taking uniform samples throughout the field, from all slope positions and mixing it all together and taking the sample from that. It gives an average, but some areas will be under-fertilized while other areas will be overfertilized. Consistency of sampling is important. Use a soil probe and removing crop residues, prior to sampling, is important for consistency’s sake. After a drought year, such as this last one, it is also a good idea to take and separate samples from different depth. Due to the drought, some of the fertilizer applied last spring may be available to the 2022 crop. Have a separate, clean bucket for the 0 to 6 inch sample and the 6 to 12 inch sample.

You might even want to have a 12 to 24 inch sample if you feel nutrients have been washed down that far.

Timing is important with soil sampling. If you sample in the fall, make sure soil temperatures are below 5C. Warmer than that will affect the accuracy of the result as soil is still biologically active. In the spring, nothing should be growing yet as growing plants also affect accuracy. Soil can be extremely variable, even over a level field. There will be differences in soil texture, structure, and amounts of topsoil. That could be seen this summer with the uneven height of the crop in a seemingly level, uniform field. The County has a lot of soils influenced by swelling clays below the topsoil, which prevent root penetration, and thusly, access to subsoil moisture.

The other main philosophy of soil sampling is a zonal approach. This is used for precision agriculture. If you know the field well, and it is divided into at least two production areas, you can take samples of each area and send them in separately, fertilizing each differently. Another approach is benchmarking. Here, you choose one place to represent the field. Then you test it at the same place, using GPS, year after year. With benchmarking choosing a representative site for the field is crucial. Over time, the benchmark site will indicate the relative nutrient levels in the field, whether it has gone up or down. Its advantage is that it can be rel-

atively quick as you only test one site.

Once you have thoroughly mixed and taken a representative sample the next step is choosing a lab for testing and the type of tests requested. Check with the lab you’re using to see if any special containers are needed. Usually, they only need a couple of cups of soil. Make sure the samples are labelled and identified clearly.

There are two may ways soil is tested for nutrients. For many years the samples were mixed with chemicals to extract nutrients and then these levels were reported. Some of the techniques used by different labs may vary and not all processes give accurate results. For example, phosphorus levels, on the prairies, are best tested by the modified Kelowna test. Other tests, like the Bray,

are less accurate on our soils.

The other method of nutrient testing is using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS). By shining a certain wavelength of light at a sample of soil, under standardized conditions, and measuring the wavelength of the reflected light, they can accurately estimated the nutrient components in the soil. This takes very little time, but the accuracy is based on the size and breadth of the database they use from wet chemistry. It is now quite accurate for agricultural use.

Soil testing provides valuable information for producers to plan their nutrient plans and most efficiently apply fertilizer for crop production.

Next week, I’ll talk about interpreting the results from soil tests.

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you took advantage of the warmer temperatures this past weekend and got outside.

It's certainly been nice to have some time off between Christmas and New Years. Last Sunday we took

full advantage of the decent weather and finally ventured outside, burning off all that energy. It was nice to see people out and about.

Did you know Killam went ahead with the outdoor skating rink in-between the Ball Family Dental Clinic and the Court House? Thank you to the Killam & District Chamber of Commerce and everyone who contributed to make this hap-

pen. Hopefully it gets lots of use and will come back in future years.

We took advantage of the public swim hours at the Killam pool during Christmas break. Maybe some more public swim times will be added since there is no school for another week.

We lucked out and received a few gifts this year that were an activity or craft for Christmas, which was perfect for the colder

days to keep us occupied.

One of the projects was a "build your own volcano" kit. We haven't had an eruption yet. On day one we poured the volcano shape, then it needed to dry for at least 24 hours.

After that we were able to paint it. Eruption to follow.

We also enjoyed some more traditional European meals this week. Without having to work, I had more time to cook. We had

Rouladen, breaded Camembert, Raclette, and Tiramisu. It's been a week of feasting for sure. I also meant to try homemade Ravioli and sweet potato gnocchi. We'll see when I get to that.

Abby Galletly leads Battle River U11 Female Knights with 20 points including 18 goals in eight games this season.

Battle River Female Knights U13 (6-2-1) skated to a 1-1 tie at Lloydminster on Dec. 19. There was no scoring until the final frame when Lloyd took the lead with only 1:35 remaining.

Battle River U15 Female Knights (8-2-0) dropped a 21 game at Lloydminster on Dec. 18. Down 1-0 entering the third, Cabrie Tanton scored only 1:51 into the frame to tie the game. Just over a minute later Lloyd recaptured the lead and held on for the victory.

Thunderstars U11 (2-6-2) skated to two tie games before the Christmas break.

On Dec. 18, TS had a 6-1 lead at Bashaw before the home team came from behind in the second period.

TS still had an 8-5 lead with only 11:06 remaining but

again Bashaw fought back finally getting the tying goal with only six second left on the clock. Keagan Grymaloski scored four goals for TS. Other scorers were; Jules Forster (2g 1a), Brooklyn McNabb (1g), Lucas Stribbell (1g), Layne Zimmer (1a), and Ryley Zimmer (1a). Davin Pfeffer was in goal for TS. The next day TS lost a lead at home, and settled for a 5-5 tie against Thorsby. TS were up 5-3 with less than two minutes remaining in the contest.

Thunderstars U13 (6-1-1) fought back from a 5-2 deficit to take the lead and lose it, then score the tying goal with 2:29 remaining for a 9-9 tie against Redwater at Daysland Arena on Dec. 18.

Other TS scorers were; Levi Robbins (2g 2a), Wyatt Berkey (2g 1a), Coy Hays (1g 1a), Aiden Pfeffer (1g), Logan McNabb (1a), and Jax Strauss (1a). Ethan Neufeld made 34 saves for TS. The next day at Vegreville, TS won a 9-4 road game. Luke Stang had a four-goal, five point game.

David Ruzicka picked up an assist. The next day at Athabasca, BR lost a heartbreaker 2-1 when the home team scored with only 1:33 remaining in the contest. Battle River-2 U15 (4-3-1) dropped an 8-3 game Dec. 17 against Wetaskiwin at Sedgewick Rec. Centre. The game was close until the third period four goal outburst by the visitors. Gibson Seffern connected with 5:12 remaining to get BR-2 to within a goal making for an exciting finish. Gibson had a hat trick in the game, and Jacob Lazarick scored twice. A look back at the first six months of 2021

The year 2021 may go down in history as it was the first full year of COVID-19 which gripped the world, the country, the province, and even the region.

COVID continued to have an impact on Flagstaff County municipalities and residents, as restrictions tightened and eased, then tightened and eased, then tightened once again towards the end of 2021. Five deaths in the region have been attributed to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The first six months of 2021 saw heavy holiday restrictions in place, with families encouraged to celebrate Christmas 2020 virtually versus in person.

That appeared to help slow down the overall new case count, from a high of 1,864 on Dec. 13, 2020, to daily counts in the 2-300s by February. Cases once again rose sharply in April and May, with a new high, 2,389 single new cases in one day on April 30.

As cases dropped, the province was declared “Open for summer,’ come July, as daily case counts hovered in the double-digit range.

Those numbers started to go up in mid August, peaking by mid-September to 1,976, before gradually declining to around 200-400 new cases per day.

The biggest COVID-19 news story that’s an ongoing issue, by far, has to be Omicron.

This new variant soon overtook countries around the world, with cases growing exponentially.

In Alberta, an estimated 2,976 new cases were reported Dec. 28. Estimated, because the province discouraged testing for the first time, asking people to rely on the results of their own rapid tests at home, and taking the appropriate precautions.

The latest variant, Omicron, has now seized the province with exponential growth of new cases.

nounced a delay in back to school for a week for all students for 2022 as the province determines what the current impact of COVID-19 actually is.

Flagstaff County’s infection rate remains low, with 17 active cases as reported Jan. 4.

While COVID-19 shaped much of how Flagstaff residents lived, worked, and played throughout 2021, there was plenty of other news to share.

January 2021 Flagstaff County Council revised a draft 2021 budget late in 2021, noting that it presently had $7 million in outstanding taxes from 2018 to 2020 related to oil and gas assessment, and built in a $2.8 million allowance for bad debts related to unpaid municipal taxes in the 2021 budged.

For the first time, interested candidates in local municipal elections had an opportunity starting Jan. 1 to pick up a nomination package early for the fall municipal election.

Students returned to school Jan. 11 after an extended Christmas break, with parents given until Jan. 21 to decide whether to move to or stay in an at-home learning program, or return to in-person learning.

The Town of Sedgewick learned in midJanuary that the Arena Roof replacement project received CFEP grant funding of $530,188. The project’s total budget was $1.3 million.

The Valley Ski Hill also received great news, announcing receipt of a grant for $437,802 for slope stabilization and snowmaking upgrades.

Battle River School Division also announced changes in the trustee structure for the fall election. The overall number of trustees changed to five, with two coming from the City of Camrose, and one each from Camrose County, Beaver County, and Flagstaff County.

Forestburg Council voted to present its annual Community Service award to Forestburg School teacher Jeff Rathwell, for his dedication to in-school and out-ofschool sports.

The Province began rolling out COVID19 vaccinations, announcing that immunization efforts for the general population were hampered by a lack of vaccines available.

For the first time in many years, the Flagstaff Scottish Club was unable to hold its annual in-person Robbie Burns Day celebration, turning instead of a virtual celebration that even included the popular Bonnie Knees contest, starting the 2021 celebration with humour, and ending with an online auction to help support the Battle River Pipe and Drum band.

Daysland School Student winners of the Royal Canadian Legion poster, essay, and poem contest were announced, with three of the local winners going forward to win at the District level as well. Daysland Legion President Gordon Pennycook said, “It’s been a tough year for the Legion as we have been unable to attend any of the

school functions to connect with the students.”

After the US Presidential elections saw Joe Biden win, one of his first acts after being sworn in last January was to pull the permits for the US portion of the Keystone XL project. The planned pipeline would have connected the Hardisty terminal to Steele City in the US. Hardisty Council released a statement commenting on the cancellation, which said, in part: “In the short term the Town of Hardisty’s businesses would have seen a direct effect from the construction and commissioning component of the project.

“Contract companies and sub trades spend money in our community via the services that our local businesses provide via accommodations, eating, consumable supplies, and local contractor services and supplies used during these two phases.”

Premier Jason Kenney called the decision, “an attack on Canada’s largest industry.”

Flagstaff County’s Economic Development Department continued to be very active in 2021 after winning two awards at the Economic Developers Alberta Conference; in the Small Business Category, and province-wide Alex Metcalfe Award, for the Flagstaff Crafted program.

Flagstaff County Reeve Don Kroetch said thanks to the success of programs like this that now when he says “Flagstaff County,” people are already familiar with who and where we are.

The Killam and District Municipal Library announced their fifth annual COVID-19 friendly version of the ‘Blind Date with a Book,’ event for Valentine’s Day. Participants were asked to provide a favoured ‘genre’ and Library Manager Barb Cox delivered a surprise book, either curbside or by mail.

The Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS) applied for grant funding to assist municipalities and the newly formed society with forming a strategy to move forward.

Flagstaff County Ec. Dev. Department announced a new project called, ‘The Future is Flagstaff,’ with a goal of engaging 100 Flagstaff County residents with the community engagement project.

Flagstaff County municipal Councils unanimously chose to share funds received through a federal-provincial Municipal Operating Support Transfer (MOST) with vulnerable volunteer groups and not-for-profits in the region, especially those impacted by COVID-19.

With a robust supply of vaccines, the Province opened the vaccination program to all seniors 75 and older. The program proved to be so popular that AHS’ booking system crashed, both via call volumes and online traffic, as over 100,000 seniors booked appointments.

Killam RCMP Cst. Tanya Tremblay was recognized for her hard work and dedication to the RCMP Field Training Program.

Hardisty Town Council heard from local resident Brittany MacMillan during a virtual meeting, who recommended a ‘shift in focus’ away from the oilfield news and instead onto the many positives the community has.

MacMillan is a member of the Hardisty and District Development Group, described by Chair Blake Moser as, “a group of regular people who want to be more engaged in the Town of Hardisty.”

The 100+ Women who Care in Flagstaff County gave out a huge boost to four local community groups in their February ‘Share the Love’ initiative, handing out $3,050 to the Daysland Legion Cemetery, the Mom’s Connection group, the Galahad Skating Committee, and the Lougheed Trout Pond.

Killam couple Gary and Janet Zettle were the winners of the 36th annual Sweethearts Draw, winning gifts and gift certificates from participating merchants throughout Flagstaff County.

March 2021 Flagstaff residents got a nice surprise while watching TV when they saw new Home Hardware commercials featuring Bob Coutts, owner of Coutts Home Hardware in Forestburg. Coutts has participated in the company’s national TV ad campaigns five or six times over the past 30something years, saying he sees it as a tremendous opportunity to promote the community.

Local pastors, led by organizer Pastor Ben Kellert, held a pre-Easter prayer tour in Flagstaff, starting March 19 and finishing up in Killam on

Easter Sunday.

The Province opened up the vaccination program further to any Albertan born in 1957 or earlier.

The Killam RCMP Detachment welcome Cst. Nick Daigle in March, a four-year veteran who transferred from Red Deer to Killam, which he says is more to his liking, having grown up in rural Atlantic Canada.

A hot topic in the Province in March was a trend to support keeping the RCMP in Alberta as the province continued steps forward in its idea of forming a provincial police force.

Flagstaff County introduced a new Podcast, with the first four episodes featuring Flagstaff Ag. Fieldman Harry Brooks. “It’s just another tool in our communications arsenal,” says Communications Coordinator Cary Castagna, who hosts the podcasts.

Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek held his first Zoom Town hall meeting, moving away from the Facebook Live format, saying his intent is to connect with as many people as possible.

Flagstaff County Council voted to delay the transitioning of oiled roads after hearing concerns from local residents.

One Hardisty couple was devastated after a fire broke out and decimated their new home. The community responded with an outpouring of support, with a fund started to help the couple get back on their feet after the fire.

Proud parents David and Charlynn Dammann accepted the Baby of 2020 prize after baby Wyatt’s name was randomly chosen from all the Babies of 2020 entered.

STARS Air Ambulance landed on Highway 13 just west of Hardisty in late March after a single-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck. It was a busy week for many Flagstaff Fire Departments, responding to structure fires, vehicle fires, and accidents. Regional Emergency Services Coordinator Kim Cannady warned, “It is getting quite dry and surrounding municipalities have

begun responding a numerous grass fires.” Not your typical March weather.

An FFCS wellbeing survey results were released in March, with just over half of Flagstaff Region respondents saying their mental health and personal wellbeing was somewhat or significantly worse since the COVID-19 pandemic, and 36 per cent reporting ‘no change.’

A strong winter storm hit the region March 28, with winds gusting from 90 to 110 km/hr along with 5-10cm of snow, forcing temporary closure of Highway 13 east of Hardisty due to icy road conditions, and power outages elsewhere in the province.

Flagstaff County Council voted to delay transitioning two more oiled roads, in the Heisler and Hardisty areas.

April 2021 In a new series of articles featuring councillors serving their first term, Killam Town Councillor Heidi Pierce said the job comes with a steep learning curve, but is very rewarding.

Hardisty parents who chose to send their children to Irma or Hughenden after the closure of the Allan Johnstone School in 2020 appealed to the BRSD and Buffalo Trail School Division for a solution other than a privately funded bus, hoping for intervention from Alberta Education and local MLAs. The Province released a new K to Grade 6 curriculum, which, initially, the BRSD was eager to review. On preliminary overview, BRSD Superintendent Rita Marler said, “We will continue to develop our understanding of the new curriculum as we unpack it.”

Later BRSD pivoted, saying ‘no’ to introducing a pilot of the new curriculum after a full review.

BRSD reported a rise in positive COVID-19 cases in the region after students returned to school after spring break.

Spring continued to bring fine weather to the area, with Forestburg golfers spotted in early April hitting the links.

His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, passed away Friday, April 19 at age 99. Canada declared April 17 as a National Day of Mourning.

Killam Fire Department held a training exercise, doing a controlled burn on a miniature house to demonstrate the spread of interior structure fires.

Hardisty debuted its new walking trail by holding the first-annual Trail Run.

Flagstaff County Council voted to revisit Physician and Health Care accommodation funding, cut in the 2021 budget, for 2022.

The Flagstaff Informed Relationship Sharing Team (FIRST) held a very successful nonevent in 2021, to replace the traditional FIRST dinner and auction, raising $19,600 from residents, businesses and groups.

Flagstaff County Councillor Jeff Eckstrand was the second in the first-term councillors feature, saying, “This role has taken a high priority in my life for the past four years. It’s also been very enjoyable.”

The Province once again expanded vaccine eligibility, to those 40 years of age for AstraZeneca.

The 2021 Women’s Conference, hosted by Flagstaff Community Adult Learning, was presented in a virtual format on Apr. 22, and featured keynote speaker Tracy Schmitt.

Participants received a free copy of Schmitt’s book. Organizers were pleased with the turnout, down from a sold out crowd in 2020, receiving positive feedback from the event, which also included cracker barrel information sessions on a variety of topics.

Flagstaff County Council decided in April, in lieu of its normal open house, to hold a public engagement via the new Podcast, with each councillor tackling a specific department.

A Forestburg women got a terrific surprise for her birthday in April, receiving 84 birthday cards in the mail.

Flagstaff 4-H clubs throughout the county stepped up to participate in the Highway Cleanup program.

COVID-19 turned a lot of birthday celebrations into solitary affairs, but this Forestburg woman received 84 birthday cards from friends and family this year.

Firefighters were able to find, rescue, and resuscitate the family cat, as well as salvage some personal belongings. The community rallied to set up a donations ‘GoFundMe’ page.

Flagstaff Municipal Councils reviewed a document asking Councils to commit to moving forward with FRESS, approving it as well as an asset transfer agreement. This would allow FRESS to take the next step forward in the process of creating a regional fire service.

A Highway 13 accident involving a loaded cattle liner highlighted the benefit of the Killam Fire Department’s Livestock and Heavy Rescue trailer. Between firefighters and local producers volunteering their expertise and skills, the surviving cattle were unloaded from the accident site into new trailers.

Flagstaff County Council made a change to their dust suppressant policy, moving from cost recovery to a 50/50 cost share on MG-30 application for any resident living on arterial roads.

Flagstaff County Councillor Howard Shield was featured in the first-term councillors series, saying, “I hope the residents of my division feel I have made prudent choices and provided good governance during my first term in office.”

Killam Health Care Centre, along with Covenant Health held a send off for Facility Executive Director Geri Clark, who retired after 46 years at the facility.

The Community Press debuted a new monthly column called “Living Well,” provided by Daysland’s HOM of Wellbeing Shirley Damberger.

Former longtime Sedgewick resident Eleanor Collier celebrated her 100th birthday on May 13 in Viking.

Flagstaff Community Adult Learning coordinator Nanette Jones received the 2021 Lois Hole Community Leadership Award for Literacy in May. Early reports from Alberta Agriculture showed moisture reserves in Flagstaff County “low” to “driest” before a welcome rain May 9 dropped between a half-inch and two-and-a-half inches around the county.

Flagstaff County again reviewed its dust suppressant policy, and passed a resolution to provide residents on arterial roads up to two free applications of MG-30.

Forestburg’s Area 53 Raceway was forced to postpone their season opener

due to COVID-19 restrictions, waiting for a green light from Alberta Health to start the season.

The Galahad Care Centre Women’s Auxiliary received a generous donation of $11,600 from the 100-plus Women Who Care in Flagstaff County in May. First-term County Councillor Melvin Thompson was the next feature in the series. He said, “Learn the background on any past decisions of your Council.

Always find out why. There’s always an answer for the ‘why’ and it’s not always what you’ve heard via gossip, or what you thought.”

June 2021 Residents and their families at the Galahad Care Centre found out that Alberta Health Services would be transferring all 18 residents to nearby facilities on June 4, with a week’s notice, due to a staffing shortage that forced a temporary closure of the facility.

Hardisty Rodeo organizers took the plunge and decided to go ahead with plans to hold the annual Rodeo and Street Fair in July, based on the hope that the Province would proceed with Stage 3 of reopening.

The Hardisty Social Club, who operate the Seniors Centre, got a nice surprise when they accepted a $1,000 donation from the Town of Hardisty during Seniors’ Week.

A new partnership, the Flagstaff Early Childhood Partnership, arising from the former Flagstaff/Beaver Early Childhood Coalition, is set to bring some fun and innovative activities for Flagstaff County families.

Flagstaff’s 4-H Beef Clubs held their second, and very successful, online Achievement Day and Beef Sale. Members and their clubs created virtual sale catalogues for the event.

Killam RCMP Detachment welcomed its newest member, Cst. Nate Hurlburt, fresh from Depot, a native of Truro, Nova Scotia.

Sedgewick announced plans to build the first dog park in the region, with organizers raising funds to fence an area along the walking path by the ball diamonds.

The Province, in the hopes of increasing vaccination numbers, announced a Vaccination lottery, with three prizes of $1 million dollars up for grabs.

The second-annual Flagstaff Region Bike Challenge started in June, this time running over the entire summer, to Aug. 31. Special activities for families are included this year, and a competitive division for the top five riders.

The Killam Ag. Society announced that the annual Rodeo and Street Fair would be postponed to 2022.

The Province announced that it would be going ahead with its plans to Open for Summer, removing most COVID-19 restrictions.

Construction started on the Wild Rose Co-op Recreation Centre arena roof in Sedgewick.

Lougheed Ag. Society announced plans to go ahead with the annual Fair in August.

First term councillor and Killam Mayor Ben Kellert appeared in the feature series. He said, “I feel very proud to be able to promote and represent this community.”

Killam RCMP Detachment said farewell to Corporal Trent Cleveland, who left to take up a new position with the Wetaskiwin Integrated Traffic Unit.

The Forestburg Power Sports Association debuted a new track for their Mud Bog this year. The new “pretzel” track was built over the winter and spring, and was a hit with participants during its trial weekend this June.

One Sedgewick man got the opportunity of a lifetime when he was invited to take part in an archeological dig in Flagstaff County. Sean Sheedy has an impressive arrowhead and tool artifact collection, and through connections he made because of that collection was invited to the site of a new and promising dig that unearthed artifacts between 1,300 and 1,500 years old.

FRESS held the first meeting of the newly registered Society on June 15, where a board of directors was elected.

A new Regional Emergency Services Manager was hired as well. Derek Homme was offered the position, to start on July 5. Work continued on the master agreement for the Society.

A very large ridge of high pressure brought extreme heat to Flagstaff County, with record breaking temperatures throughout Alberta and BC, with temps in the high 30s, pushing as high as 40 degrees in some areas.

Central High Sedgewick Public School held their first June graduation in many years, modified for COVID-19.

Graduates held a small ceremony, then took to Main Street Sedgewick for a parade before family and friends who gathered to cheer them on. Grads then moved to a private outdoor location to continue their celebration.

Forestburg and Daysland High Schools announced their graduations would be delayed to the fall.

Hardisty Firefighters responded to a huge grass fire on June 28, burning north of the tank farm. Hardisty called on surrounding departments for aid in fighting the fire, which occurred while temperatures were hovering around 30 degrees. The fire was in a hard-to-reach area, and firefighters actually discovered two large fires when they arrived on scene.

OBITUARY Raymond Pottage

August 12, 1934 to December 24, 2021 It is with great sadness that the family of Raymond Pottage of Camrose, AB, formerly of Sedgewick, AB, announces his sudden passing on December 24, 2021, at the age of 87 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara; daughter Janita (Kevin); granddaughter Emily (Tyler); grandson Braeden (Aryanna); sister Edith Lunty; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond was predeceased by his infant son Timothy; infant daughter Carmen; son Clinton; brother Earl Pottage; sister Edna Waite; and his parents Stephen and Bessie Pottage.

It was Raymond’s wish to not have a formal service, however, a private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Faith Column: If you just believe Christmas Day comes so fast. It’s here for 24 hours then vanishes. We celebrate it, enjoying food, family, and gifts, and then it’s over for another year. All of us are challenged to believe in something during this celebration.

When young, we are encouraged to believe in Santa Claus bringing us gifts. As we grow, we begin to believe in love and friendship passed onto us through gifts of appreciation. Tradition brings the challenge of making past good experiences a reality once more.

This brings us closer to one another because we believe in family and friends.

And then many are encouraged to believe in more than that – in celebrating the coming of a special baby into our world. Christmas is more than gifts and presents, more than food and fes-

tivities. The Bible tells us that Jesus, who is God, was born into our world, so that we could believe in the God who created us and loves us. Jesus became human, not holding or clinging to His divinity, but as the apostle Paul tells us “Made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2:7 Jesus came to us so that might believe that God exists and desires us to be with Him for all eternity.

Well hello to all of you.

Yippee, I have news for a change!

First of all I wish you all a year filled with good health, no COVID-19 variants, no flu, and the ability to safely socialize. Humans are social creatures and we miss human interaction. I find it hard to recognize folks with a mask on. Then add a scarf, a toque, and a ski jacket and the good Lord only knows who you’re talking to. I’ve mistaken a few people.

We are lucky to have an efficient pharmacy in the town that offers vaccinations.

We bid farewell to Bill Bonner in December. He was 99 years old and a special friend to Cathy Nelson. Bill passed away at the Wainwright Hospital and Cathy mentioned what wonderful pastoral care he received there. Bill was a real cowboy and horseman. Rest in peace dear Bill and my condolences to Cathy and both your families.

Our post mistress Cathy Crone was ecstatic to announce that she and Stewart are proud grandparents again, along with Ken and Dawn Guenther. Daughter Becky and husband Scott Guenther welcomed a second son on Dec. 21, weighing in at eight pounds, 11.5 ounces at a height of 20.75 inches. He has an interesting name: Ridge Stewart, his brother’s name is Quade. He was born on great, great grandpa Nels Djos’ birthday.

People give their children such unique names nowadays, no more “Tom, Dick, or Harry” eh?

Fay Bronson received a call from our past minister Rev. Nam zok Yu. She has a large church in Vancouver, but wanted to wish her past congregants “season’s greetings.”

Fay and Jim Bronson had their son Dean and his wife Bonni visit from Duffield, Alberta. Their big surprise was when grandson Jerod and his wife Stacey visited from

100 Mile House in BC. Wow, that was quite a trek.

Many of you will remember Dr. Gabriel Cahill. He was Hardisty’s family doctor for 18 years.

He recently passed away in St. Albert, Alberta. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. We send condolences to his wife Dodie and his family.

Rod Fraiser called to inform me that his wife Winnie fell in their kitchen. She fractured her hip. She has had surgery and was just sitting in her chair when he chatted with her. He is unsure what her rehabilitation course will be, but at the present she is at the Misericordia Hospital. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Winnie. Rod wanted to give accolades to the Hardisty Ambulance and Fire Rescue staff. They came promptly to assist Winnie and gave proficient, exemplary medical care. Rod was very impressed and grateful.

Our library was happy to receive our community calendars that were produced by The Community Press. They did a great job and you can pick one up at the Hardisty Library. I will be delivering a free calendar to each of the businesses that advertised on it.

We have a very busy library board member. Her name is Sharon Perreault and she is also a Hardisty Hospital Auxiliary member. She was instrumental in starting the joint “Long Term Care Library Book Exchange.” She writes: Since partnering with Long Term Care and the library this program has been well received by our residents. The large print books are a great hit as it makes it much easier for people to read. The DVDs are being used for the enjoyment of many. The residents enjoy sitting with people and discussing what they have read or watched. The residents, as well as the people discussing the material, are so stimulating to their brains. This gives us ideas for new reading and watching material. We like to encourage residents and families to help us continue with the partner-

ship. It is an important partnership and a fabulous concept for all. If you feel you would like to help, please contact the hospital at 780-888-3742, they will forward you to the appropriate people.

Thank you to Virgina Shorak for informing me how to keep my “poppy” on my person. I tried it and it works!

I just spoke to Margaret Shott, who survived a horrific cardiac event without emergency at the Hardisty Health Centre. She is getting stronger every day and uses her walker for longer treks, but is able to mobilize hands free in her home. She sounds like her perky self, good for you Margaret! We all wish you well!

OBITUARIES Edward Joseph (EJ) Blaeser

March 29, 1928 to December 21, 2021 Edward Joseph (EJ) Blaeser was born March 29, 1928 to Leonard and Barbara (Ludgen) Blaeser in Heisler, Alberta. EJ passed away Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Daysland Hospital with his family by this side.

EJ is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Margaret (George) Blaeser; children Perry (Jerry) Blaeser, Willa (Darrell) Schwab, and Len (Susan) Blaeser; his grandchildren Courtney (Tyler) Blaeser, Dane (Ashley) Blaeser, Sam (Katie) Schwab, and Leah Blaeser; greatgrandchildren Dallas Blaeser and Bradlie

Blaeser; his brother Ray (Diane) Blaeser; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son Tim Blaeser and grandsons Peter John Blaeser, Andrew Schwab, and Craig Blaeser; parents Leonard and Barbara Blaeser; and sister Laverne (John) Borgel.

EJ was a cattle and grain farmer North of Killam, he retired in 1990 to Killam. In 1996 they moved to Canmore until 2020 when they moved to Providence Place in Daysland, Alberta.

His life revolved around his family. Travelling with friends, sports, and crib were his favourite pastimes.

He will be sadly missed by family and all that knew and loved him.

A family funeral will be held at a later date. Any donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation or Killam Cemetery.

Goldene Blanche Parsons

March 28, 1946 to December 26, 2021

Goldene Blanche Parsons was born to Robert and Blanche McGowan in Killam, Alberta, on March 28, 1946, and passed away at Wainwright Health Centre on December 26, 2021, at the age of 75 years.

She is survived by her husband Donavin Parsons; her son Leroy Parsons; two daughters, Julie Bailey (Mark Carter) and Coreen (Ian) Farrell;

dening, saskatoon berry picking, and spending time with her grandkids; as well as many farm adventures with her son Leroy.

The Daysland Business Association had a prosperous year.

The summer barbeques were back; hosted every Tuesday from June to August.

Members of the Association took their turns to volunteer weekly. President Dwayne Seiferman and member Orval Hawthorne were present weekly with smiles on their faces to provide an evening supper in the park to our community.

Community groups, including the Daysland School Travel Club and the Daysland Sports and Recreation group, also volunteered with profits going back to their organizations.

October brought a Halloween/scarecrow competition, coloring contest and a Halloween parade with music, costumes, lights, and candy throughout the town.

December’s Christmas celebration was a success

with a Light Up Daysland contest, Christmas market organized by Kathy Kuntz and Val Lichak, Christmas Parade with hotdogs and hot chocolate provided by The Credit Union, and a coloring contest.

Despite the cold weather, the community bonded with festive joy and spirit!

With the profits made by the Association, a covered shelter was built this year at the West Side Manor Park. The shelter was gratefully utilized for the Daysland graduation Ceremonies, the Alliance Church VBS, the barbeques, and by numerous private family and friends gatherings.

We are a growing association with 32 members this last year. The community support we promote and provide to our local businesses makes Daysland a town full of prosperity.

We couldn’t do it without all our terrific and much-appreciated volunteers.

We look forward to 2022.
