JANUARY A former Holden resident, who was initially given 18 years in prison for killing her abusive husband in 2011, has been allowed escorted absences from prison and, once she is eligible early this year, day parole. During her trial in 2020 Helen Naslund, now 58, admitted to shooting her husband Miles, then 49, twice in the head as he slept at their farm in the morning of Sept. 5, 2011.

Viking Health Centre Auxiliary Members presented Dana Melnyk and baby Kasey with the 2023 New Year’s baby gifts on Jan. 6, at the Viking Health Centre.

Kasey was born at 4:57pm on Thursday, Jan. 5.

Jean Paré, author of the famous cookbook line “Company’s Coming,” died Christmas Eve 2022 in Edmonton at the age of 95. She was born in 1927 to the Elford family and raised in Irma. Her childhood home at the north end of main street has served as the village’s museum for many years. In her honour, the Irma and District Historical Society wrote a tribute called “Remembering Jean Paré.”

Cargill Viking donated $1,000 to the Viking/Beaver FCSS Christmas Cheer fund.

RCMP sought the public’s help in locating a suspect wanted in an armed robbery at Viking Subway. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, when Viking RCMP responded to a call that a robbery was taking place at the restaurant located on Highway 14 just east of the junction with Highway 36. “An unknown male suspect entered the Subway, displayed a firearm, and demanded cash from the Subway employee,” stated Media Relations Officer Cpl. Gina Slaney.

After a request from former councillor Judy Acres to make the walking track at the Carena free for seniors, Viking Council decided the town would charge a $20 lifetime fee for anyone 55 and over for use of the track only.

Heart and Hustle and MVP awards were given out at the end of each game, and medals were also presented after each team had played its second (last)

“Some of our players helped out the Holden team and they kindly awarded Bo Hafso and Berkley Hafso as MVP on their team for their games,” said U7 Gas Kings team manager Lindsay Hafso.

Other fun events included prize and raffle tables, a puck toss, 50/50 draw, and full concession. Family and friends had a great time watching their favourite teams and players put on a show for the people in the

holidays for Alberta RCMP as almost 2,500 tickets were issued, including 172 impaired charges, for violations on the province’s roadways. The safety violations included 707 drivers ticketed for speeding and another 45 charged with distracted driving. A further 1,544 motorists received tickets for careless driving, driving with a prohibited or suspended license, moving offences and more.

Ryley councillor Brian Ducherer spoke out against a flyer delivered to village households entitled “The Village of Ryley - Year in Review (2022).” “I do not endorse this letter…in fact was not even aware of its existence until it was handed to me by another councillor,” he wrote in his own dated Jan. 8. He said the contents of the Village flyer weren’t discussed by the council as a whole, adding that much of the information in the letter was misleading.

Battle River School Division gave out long service awards throughout the division. At Viking School, Lori Sarafinchan was recognized for her retirement as a teacher with BRSD. Laurie Maxwell was also given this honour as a retired former Learning Commons Facilitator. Viking School employee Debbie Snider was recognized for 20 years of BRSD service and is in a dual role as an administrative assistant and an educational assistant at the school.

FEBRUARY The Viking Municipal Library brought in an art display called “Farming in the Dust Bowl” by Carol Bromley Meeres from Jan. 26 to Feb. 21. The display is part of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts travelling exhibition program, whose mandate is to provide every Albertan with an opportunity to enjoy visual art exhibitions in their community.

The Town of Viking’s Animal Control Bylaw was amended by town council at the Jan. 16 meeting. The bylaw still contains a three-day holding period in which the pet’s owner can pick the animal up, or adopted.

If that doesn’t happen within that time frame, the bylaw states the animal must be destroyed.

An increase in the number of clients needing services from Viking/Beaver FCSS resulted in a funding increase request to the Town of Viking for 2023. At the Jan. 16 meeting of Viking Council, Acting Chief Administrative Officer Doug Lefsrud recommended the funding requests be granted, later saying “there is justification for it,” due to the increased costs of dealing with more persons seeking some form of support from the local FCSS. FCSS made a request for funding equal to 2021 of $13,665.25, which constitutes 20 per cent of its municipal share of funding for the 2023 program, and asked for an additional 25 per cent increase for a total request of $17,081.56.

Three local gymnasts who participate in the competitive gymnastics program out of the Wainwright Gymnastics Club attended the California Grand Invitational in Anaheim, California with their teammates on January 28 and 29. Jorja Andreson and Makayla Hill, 2023 graduates from Viking School, and Paisely Merta had a great meet displaying their new routines for the season and came home with some cool medals. Jorja won second on beam, third on vault and sixth all around.

On February 5, police responded to a motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 14. Upon arrival members located a semi truck and a service truck in the ditch. Investigation determined the service truck was crossing Highway 14 and pulled out in the path of a loaded semi trailer. The semi collided with the passenger side of the service truck causing both vehicles to enter the ditch. The passenger in the service truck sustained serious injuries and STARS attended and transported the passenger to the U of A hospital for treatment.

The driver of the semi and service truck received medical attention for minor injuries.

Brent Fischer and Michael Soucy received the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medals at a ceremony in Vermilion recognizing their many years of community service to the Village of Irma.

St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, which sits on open land south of Holden, was the scene of a senseless crim in the early morning hours of Jan. 22 when at least two criminals used straps and truck to yank the church’s heavy metal bell right through the wall of it’s 98-year-old wooden bell tower. As per the surveillance footage, at 2:27 a.m., two vehicles drove into the church yard. At least two individuals, equipped with power tools and flashlights, broke into the church’s bell tower and cut the hardware holding the bell. The bell tower can been seen rocking off of its foundation at 2:51 a.m. before the bell was finally pulled right through the side of the building. The bell is seen being dragged behind the truck at 2:52 a.m. Jan. 22 as the perpetrators drove out of the church yard, sparks flying on the gravel road.

The Irma Curling Club held their 65th Annual Farmer’s Spiel on the weekend of Jan. 6 and 7. In honour of the 65th year, the curlers were piped in and a ceremonial first rock was thrown. The Viking Red Solo Cup Spiel, held Feb. 3 and 4, was another wellattended event with many groups participating.

The Town of Viking was abuzz with entertainment during the Family Day event, held at Viking Carena on Monday, Feb. 20.

Mugsy the Juggler was on hand to show off his talents for juggling and magic, as well as on a unicycle. The ice was open for public skating during the day, which many families took advantage of. Those brave enough to face the cold weather went on a lovely wagon ride around the Carena. It was an enjoyable way to spend the holiday.

Irma School students enjoyed their third annual Literacy Day. This entire day was to recognize the power that reading and writing can have on a young mind. First place winners of the elementary reading contest was Mrs. Tomlinson’s fourth graders, and second place was awarded to Miss Shaw’s grade twos and threes.

Hockey team was victorious. The Calgary Flames and Special Olympics Calgary were both quick to congratulate Chris and his team on their social media pages. Chris is a fan favourite and staple of the Flames organization, often spotted in the crowd rallying for fans to make noise during important moments.

Effective March 1, 2023, drivers need to slow down to 60 km/hr if they come across any emergency vehicles with flashing lights on a single lane highway. On multilane highways that are separated by a meridian or barrier, like the QEII or TransCanada Highways, all lanes travelling in the same direction now must slow down, where it used to be only the lane directly adjacent to the emergency vehicle. In addition, snowplows and highway maintenance vehicles stopped with lights flashing are now included in the legislation.

Viking AG Foods had their annual sweepstakes for the Great Grocery Giveaway, with the final and grand prize happening Wednesday, March 1. The winning for the Viking area was Joanne Kittle. With a bag of dog food, many frozen meals, meat, and other goods, Kittle ended up with $451.64 worth of groceries, a good haul for only 50 seconds of time.

Irma Skating Club presented its annual ice carnival with the theme “What’s Playing on Your TV?” The skaters dressed in colourful costumes and were able to choreograph 19 individual and group performances for an arena full of appreciate family and friends.

On March 14 Viking School’s Miss Culbert’s Grade 6 class and Mrs. Josephison’s Grade 9 class travelled to Edmonton for a tour of the Alberta Legislature and a meeting with their MLA (Camrose), Jackie Lovely.

Bruce Quilting Ladies recently donated a load of quilts and bedding to LAMP (Lutheran Association of Missionary Pilots). The care packages were delivered to First Nations communities in northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

The Irma U13 female hockey team travelled to Lethbridge on the last weekend of March to compete in Provincials, winning for the second year in a row. After a very long ride home a final celebration was held at the Larson’s in Hardisty.

The members of the Viking Skating Club pulled out all the stops on Sunday, March 19, to show off all of their newly learned skills under the theme “Let's Celebrate” during their ice carnival presentation for 2023.

The skaters wore adorable and beautifully made

costumery and were happy representatives of their club for all the friends and family who came out to enjoy their performances.

From young ones to their older counterparts, there was plenty of entertainment to go round, including solos, duets, and group acts with a delightful carnival theme, celebrating holidays and special celebrations during the year. Some skated to Happy Birthday, Christmas, Canada Day, Halloween, and

During intermission everyone also enjoyed a raffle table and 50/50 draw in the Viking Carena Complex lobby. The lobby was a buzz during this time, as people made their final entries into the draws and crossed their fingers their names be called later during the show.

The grand finale saw all the skaters on the ice with their coaches.

APRIL Four Irma girls, Andie Olsen, Allegra and Felicity Ford, and Jamie Holt, competed with their Wainwright Dance Academy group in Camrose over the weekend. Their ballet number entitled “Winter” achieved High Gold and a high score for which they were invited to the dancers’ Showcase on Sunday. Here they were rated top overall in their level across all genres at the festival.

Wild Rose Co-op donated $7,115 to Viking Holden and Area Food Bank towards the purchase of a new refrigerator/cooler for increasing the capacity of perishable items at the Food Bank.

In her absence, Viking Mayor Laura Yakiwchuk was censured by council and relieved of her committee duties.

She was also asked to apologize officially for her conduct. She had been on unofficial leave since an incident took place during a strategic planning session in March. During that time, Deputy Mayor Jamie Buttner has been chairing the meetings.

A Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held at the Viking Seniors Centre as a way of honouring and thanking everyone in the community for all their efforts throughout the year in making Viking and area a welcoming place for all its residents. Those who attended the luncheon in Viking enjoyed a beautiful meal, speakers and gifts. A luncheon was also held in Holden the following Saturday.

The Viking Fire and Rescue Pancake Breakfast held Sunday at the Firehall took place on a lovely spring day that was perfect for enjoying the food prepared by local firefighters. The kids also enjoyed a visit with Sparky the Fire Dog. The Viking 4-H Beef Achievement Day was held Saturday, April 30, at the Holden Complex. All club members and their families were on hand to show the animals from their 2022-2023 year. Grand Champion Steer was awarded to Luke Brooke, and Reserve went to Ashely Klein.

MAY The Calgary Flames announced that the team had parted ways with

Viking’s future Hockey Hall of Fame coach Darryl Sutter. Despite Darryl being a favourite of many fans of the Flames, the regular spectators to the games at the Saddledome will also be disappointed to see less of Darryl and Wanda’s son, Chris, who is a fixture at the games cheering on Calgary and revving up the fan base.

Viking Fire and Rescue battled what was called a “significant” brush fire west of Viking on Thursday, May 4.

The fire was difficult enough to extinguish that four departments with over 10 fire units were needed to control the fires. As well as the larger brush fire, a smaller grass fire also took hold that day. Both were burning along the CN Rail line.

The Kinsella Community Hall was full Saturday afternoon of family and friends eager to see the year-end recital of the Viking Dance Inspirations club.

The dancers performed hip hop lyrical, jazz, ballet and musical theatre.

In honour of Paramedic Services Week, Beaver Emergency Medical Services held an Open House Pancake Breakfast at the Viking Ambulance Station on Saturday, May 20. Despite the prevailing wildfire smoke in the area, people of all ages turned out to meet the EMS staff in their community and tour the facilities. All proceeds from the breakfast went to the local food bank.

On Thursday, May 18 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Killam RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 14 near Range Road 145, between Viking and Bruce. Upon arrival, it was discovered that two half ton pickup trucks had been involved in a head-on collision. The driver of one of the trucks, a 61-year-old male resident and business owner in Viking, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The other driver was transported via ambulance to hospital with undetermined injuries.

JUNE Lovers of all things country got a weekend of sizzling hot rodeo at this year’s Cloverlodge Stampede June 10 and 11. The action on the grounds was equalled by the hot temperatures over the weekend. The Viking Parade was a colourful event full of variety and fun

for all. Crowds lined the streets in anticipation of the parade, which didn’t fail to impress.

Holden’s Farmer’s Day on June 10 drew around 400 people to the little village thanks in part to the village’s first ball tournament in over six years.

Twelve teams competed in the tournament while nearby other attendees enjoyed the indoor market, outdoor mini-olympics courses, bouncy castles, petting zoo, and foam pit in addition to the event’s third annual car show by Red Truck Rustics.

The 2023 Viking Lions Chili Cook-off was a smash success with lots of participation on both sides - cooks bringing in their prepared recipes for sampling and those who did the sampling and rating them. The Viking Multiplex was buzzing with activity Friday night as people sampled the many chili preparations, visited and socialized.

The annual pet food fundraiser family and friends hold every year in honour of a young girl named Sierra Loades continues to reap benefits for animals in need of help, this year raising over $2,500.

The Beaver District 4-H held a fundraiser in the form of an adult community dance alongside a silent auction at the Kinsella Community Centre on Friday, June 23, a first for the District. Just under $9,000 of net proceeds was raised through the event.

The newly formed Irma Daycare held a Daycare Kick-off at the school on Wednesday, June 21, with doughnuts, freezies, and juice for everyone to enjoy. The entire community was invited to come out and view the blueprints of the new modular that will house the daycare, and keep the fundraising going as well.

Viking High School held its farewell ceremony for 26 graduates on Friday, June 2, in the school gymnasium.

This year’s class included Jorja Andreson, Rayne Arndt, Andrew Bae, Cianna Beaumont, Amber Dubeau, McKenna Flores, Keegan Grisdale, Robyn Hackywicz, Kirstin Haeberle, Caley Haydon, Makayla Hill, Katie Hrabec, Connar Hummel, Kass JenkinsDay, Jasmine Kaur, Kevin Kennedy, Denna Koch, Dillon Kolenosky, Halle Labreche, Chandra Laskoski, Rylan LeBlanc, Brayson McClements, Jade Pollington, Taylor Roulston, Kerry Simot, and Nelinora Wiebe.

The ceremonies began with Master and Mistress of Ceremonies Mr. Vita Wong and Mrs. Shelby Roth greeting every-

one in the auditorium. During the Processional which followed, each grad’s name was called out as they made their way to the stage and had their future plans read out.

A tribute was also made to Sierra Loades who died several years ago but would have graduated with this class.

A picture of her was placed onstage and a single candle was lit as a reminder that her spirit was still with them. In honour of Sierra, family and friends hold a fundraiser every year for animal causes.

Then the program continued with Class President Taylor Roulston reflecting on the students in the class. ‘Memorable Moments’ were provided by McKenna Flores and Jasmine Kaur; Brayson McClements and Dillon Kolenosky; and Cianna Beaumont and Katie Hrabec.

Another humorous feature,

called ‘Most Likely To…’ was provided by Halle Labreche, Kirstin Haeberle, and Caley Haydon; and Kevin Kennedy and Andrew Bae. Local Beaver County Councillor Dale Pederson gave the audience a chuckle while offering some homespun advice for the grads.

Local trustee Lyle Albrecht spoke on behalf of the Battle River School Board offering congratulations to the successful students.

Also on hand were Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely and Deputy Mayor James Buttner, each congratulating the students on their achievement.

School Principal Candice McLeod gave greetings from Viking School, and Erin Hollar brought greetings from the Viking Parent Council.

Chandra Laskoski provided the 2023 Valedictory Address, acknowledging the help of parents, school, and community in

getting the graduates to this point in their lives.

A slide show presentation showed the grads in pictures through the years as they were growing up.

This was followed by Halle Labreche thanking the teachers, and Jade Pollington thanking the parents, for all their help through the years.

The reply to these thank you’s came from Crystal Pollington and Cynthia Roulston.

The grads then left the stage, each to be presented with their diploma by Principal McLeod and a flower to give their families during the touching “Forever Grateful” portion of the ceremony.

The Recessional concluded the ceremonies, but everyone headed over to the community hall for a fun social gathering and to dance with parents, escorts and other grads.

Whooping cough Naslund out outbreak 'continues to grow' in central zone on parole Patricia Harcourt Editor

Former Holden resident, Helen Naslund, 58, was paroled late last month after serving part of a nineyear sentence for manslaughter for killing her abusive husband Miles, 49, in 2011.

Naslund was initially sentenced to 18 years in 2020 but the sentence was reduced to nine years after a public outcry resulted in a 2-1 decision by the Alberta Court of Appeal, according to reports. Naslund’s son Neil, who was 19 at the time, received three years for helping his mother hide Miles’s body on the family’s farm and was paroled in 2021.

Miles was first reported missing on Sept. 6, 2011, by Naslund who suggested he may have killed himself after disappearing in his Chevy Cavalier with a .357 Magnum handgun.

In Aug. 2017, RCMP were tipped off upon learning that Darrell Naslund, Neil’s brother, told people what really happened to his father.

In an agreed statement of facts, Miles spent the day before the killing intoxicated, ordering Naslund around with a gun and throwing wrenches at her before destroying a table set for Sunday dinner saying the meal was “not fit for a dog.” Naslund suffered for nearly 30 years at the hands of her abusive husband.

Wesley Naslund, the eldest of the three sons, spoke to newspapers about growing up under his father’s obsessive controlling behaviour and feelings of never-ending dread.

He said his mother tried leaving multiple times and his father always said he would track her down.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the Parole Board of Canada said Naslund’s family is supportive of her although she is estranged from Darrell who Naslund feels betrayed her.

As if people needed another dangerous illness to worry about after three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, a dangerous bacterial infection is starting to spread in Alberta, especially among children.

Whooping cough, officially called pertussis, is making its presence known in Central Alberta after first taking hold in the southern part of the province.

Alberta Health Services has put out a warning stating: “Pertussis outbreak expands in South, Central Zones.”

The illness first became apparent in January of this year in the South Zone, and AHS states it has “continued to grow.”

The province now has 114 identified cases including “a small number in Central Zone,” which includes four cases in Willingdon and Red Deer.

The majority of cases in the province have been in children 18 years old and younger, and 72 per cent of these are between one and nine years of age.

Five children have had to be hospitalized.

AHS says the communities involved have “significantly low childhood immunization rates, and there is evidence of transmission within households, community events, and gatherings, and at some schools.”

“AHS is issuing a reminder to all people of the importance of immunization, particularly in small chil-

that can last for weeks. AHS warns that it can impact people of all ages but infants one year and younger are at greatest risk of serious complications, including pneumonia, convulsions, brain damage, and death.

Symptoms start with a runny nose, sneezing, fever, and mild cough. Over the course of a week the cough would be expected to get worse with repetitive spells often followed by a ‘whooping’ sound, especially in younger children when inhaling. After a coughing spell, vomiting is also a common occurrence.

AHS is offering practical advice to guard against become infected. And it sounds much like the advice given in the case of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Immunization is the best method to protect against and limit the spread of pertussis, along with regular hand washing and remembering not to share drinks, food, or cutlery,” said the statement.

AHS states that immunizing is safe and will prevent people from becoming severely ill. The shot is free for all children under 18 years of age, people in their third trimester of pregnancy (27 weeks), and adults who have not had a tetanus booster in the past 10 years.

AHS is also urging people to keep up to date on their immunizations.

Local community health centres and public health offices may be able to track down immunization records for individuals not sure of their status.

Firefighters battle 'significant’ brush fire west of Viking as province deals with almost 100 wildfires Patricia Harcourt Editor

Viking Fire and Rescue battled what was called a “significant’ brush fire west of Viking on Thursday, May 4.

The fire was difficult enough to extinguish that four departments with over 10 fire units were needed to control the fires.

Along with Viking, there were firefighters from Kinsella, Bruce, and Irma fire departments.

As well as the larger brush fire, a smaller grass fire also took hold that day. Both were burning along the CN Rail line.

“The Viking Fire Department responded to two separate incidents that were started along the CN rail tracks,” said Viking Fire Chief Kevin Fornal. “The first one was about noon on the 4th (of May) and was located east of Viking at Range Road 120 with the second one approximately at 1900 hours located west towards Bruce in the area of Range Road 140.

“The first fire took approximately five hours to bring under control with several hours extinguishing hot spots,” he said. “The second one was smaller and was easily extinguished in a short time.”

He estimated that the fire to the east burned about “a one mile long area of grass and thick brush.” The larger fire had the fire department on scene for about six hours.

A message was sent out at the time for people to avoid driving by the fire scene out of curiosity. “We need our room to work and for coming and going of trucks,” said the message.

In Viking, a cigarette was found in the burnt grass resulting in another message: “The dangers of flicking a cigarette out the window, even if you think it will land on the highway, can have devastating results.”

However Fornal says the cause was due to something else.

“The cause was not believed to be a cigarette, but started by the CN train,” he said. And there was quick action to contain it.

“A couple of farmers brought their tractors out to help disc the fire to prevent fire spread,” he said. “With the windy conditions sparks were jumping up to 100 feet and the farmers with the tractors were able to work up the field and extinguish smaller fires and limit fire spread.”

He also explained that the picture used online to show the way the tractors worked, “was not actually from that day but was an example of what was used.”

He added: “It was difficult to extinguish due to the extreme heat, rapid spread, thick brush, and uneven terrain.”

Seven members along with instructor Mr. Andreson travelled all the way to British Columbia for the chance to be the Canadian champion in their belt category.

The meet was hosted by Sundance Tae Kwon Do of BC, with over 560 competitors and over 40 clubs from six provinces all in attendance. This was the largest meet held by the federation to date.

Weekend of Chucks & Chariots Action in Viking

For Black Belts it was a chance to try out for Team Canada and head to Europe in the fall. All seven of our colour belts who participated came home with at least one medal for sparring or patterns, which was a great result and Mr. Andreson was very impressed.

A highlight for sure was that three of those medals were awarded Gold for sparring to claim the titles.

Tae Kwon Do runs in Viking on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Killam on Wednesdays. New members are always welcome to join.

For three days last weekend, the Cloverlodge Stampede Grounds in Viking were the centre of chariot and chuckwagon racing action.

Stands were full for the exciting races put on by the Viking and District Agricultural Society and sanctioned by the Alberta Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Association (APCCA). Smoke advisories from wildfires in other parts of the province didn’t appear to dampen any of the fun.

Races were held at 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Food with Flair and Noodle Pigs Mini-Donuts food trucks were set up onsite to provide food and refreshments.

Saturday, the highly successful pork rib cook-off took place at the Multiplex to rave reviews. This was one of two new features

Beer gardens were held all three days, and every day racing fans saw eight chariot heats and seven chuckwagon heats. And there was plenty of action and excitement as the dust flew as drivers worked to steer their horses around the barrels as fast and cleanly as possible before tearing down the tracks.

The ever popular Terry Cartier did the announcing for the races, throwing in anecdotes, jokes, and tidbits about drivers and the racing world.

And in-between the chariots and chucks, during intermission the crowd was treated to seeing youngsters drive during the mini chuckwagon races.

On Sunday, the races were held in conjunction with the Viking Historical Society’s Pancake Breakfast at the Legion and the society’s annual Show and Shine.

JOHN’S RANT Guilbeault may be plugged in; but not to reality Well wasn’t that a nice Christmas present from our Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault.

“You will have to drive a zero emissions vehicle by 2035.”

No ifs, ands, or buts.

Nope old Gibby has decreed it so and his silly boss Justin hasn’t done anything to reel this minister in.

It’s pretty obvious to anyone who delves into this issue ever so slightly, that it won’t work anyway.

Well, we may be sure there will be plenty of batteries for those electric vehicles because the Trudeau Liberals have casually tossed billions into battery production facilities in Southern Ontario.

They will likely be up and running by 2035 so there had better be a market for the product. So let’s make everyone drive an electric car.

Guilbeault overlooks the slight fact that electric cars cost $10,000 to $20,000 more than your average gas or diesel powered steed.

But hey, the Liberals will throw some subsidies to those buying electric cars.

The fact that those subsidies will come from the taxes paid by the very same people who can’t afford the EVs in the first place won’t worry him or his bureaucrats.

Will there be enough power generated by 20235 to allow for charging all these vehicles?

I haven’t seen any experts saying there will be.

Nope, the fact there won’t be proper infrastructure in place doesn’t matter to Guilbeault.

More than a year ago, Petro Canada was proudly proclaiming it had charging outlets at its stations across Canada.

Right … but what the Petro Can PR hacks didn’t say was that there were charging stations in “all” their stations. There aren’t at the local Petro Canada stations in both Fort Saskatchewan and Lamont.

But then they are off the beaten path, so it does-

n’t matter.

This is much the same as Guilbeault’s thinking.

There are charging stations littering the southern Ontario and southern Quebec landscape.

Everywhere else in Canada is off the beaten path so who cares.

Certainly not the Liberals! Just look at the City of Edmonton.

“What a good day for Edmonton,” said Ryan Birch, Director of Transit Operations for Edmonton Transit Service when they announced the acquisition of 40 electric buses in 2020. “It’s a good day for ETS, for ETS customers, and for all Edmontonions who are excited to be part of making the place we live, and move, a more climate friendly place.”

Everywhere else in Canada is off the beaten path so who cares.

In a press release city officials said the buses were quieter, and cheaper to run than conventional diesel buses.

The release went on to state they could cover up to 350 km on a charge letting them cover just about all of the ETS routes.

Fast forward to December 2023.

Three-quarters of the city’s now 60-bus electric fleet are in the garage with poor immediate prospects for parts to fix them.

Proterra, the American company the city purchased the electric buses from between 20192022, is in Chapter 11 filing for bankruptcy protection.

Edmonton’s on a list of creditors, seeking $1.3 million and fulfillment of service and warranties.

Some electric bikes can go farther on a charge than an ETS electric bus.

While the city stated mileage up to 340 km on a charge, on Edmonton streets the stylish bus is closer to a range of up to 117 km, which gets it on the streets from 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. before it has to hit the charger, and then gets back out from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

And further, the driver’s cab is not suited for

drivers either larger or smaller in size.

While parts may in future become available thereby preventing the electric buses from being called a complete failure, the electric buses can hardly be called a success story.

They may have better luck with hydrogen buses A hydrogen alternative doesn’t even work its way into any of Guilbeault’s speeches.

As long as motorists with electric vehicles can drive around Greater Toronto or Greater Montreal, with occasional side trips out into the nearby countryside, Guilbeault will be happy.

And now according experts at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Edinburgh, humans account for as much 0.1% of the country’s overall greenhouse gas emissions and as much as 1% of its methane and nitrous oxide Saving the planet may be as simple as saving your breath. Literally.

And that’s just from breathing, excluding secondary flatus emissions from burping and farting. That’s on top of the carbon dioxide all humans exhale naturally.

“We report only emissions in breath in this study and flatus emissions are likely to increase these values significantly, though no literature characterizes these emissions for people in the UK,” as per the research team.

The conclusion? In the paper Dr. Nicholas Cowan said the evidence of planet-killing breathing is pretty clear and shouldn't be taken lightly.

"We would urge caution in the assumption that emissions from humans are negligible," he said.

So probably soon in the new year we can expect Guilbeault to find a way to impose a carbon tax on the air we breathe out. He’ll probably do this while Justin is busy solving the country’s major problems such as installing menstrual product machines in all Federal office men’s washrooms.

What a great country we live in.

Alberta RCMP reminding citizens about ice safety The Alberta RCMP is issuing a warning to the public reminding them to practice ice safety this winter. With the changing weather conditions and above average temperatures, it is hard to tell the strength or thickness of ice by its appearance.

RCMP have responded to multiple occurrences over this past weekend and want to remind the all Albertans the dangers of unpredictable thin ice and open water. If you choose to go out on the ice, keep in mind the following safety tips: C o n s i d e r Conditions: Keep a close eye on the weather, changing weather can make ice surfaces unpre-

dictable. Do not travel over ice in early and late winter when conditions are more likely to be dangerous.

Avoid slushy, thawed, recently refrozen ice, or ice near moving water. Avoid going on the ice at night as reduced visibility increases the risk of falling through.

Always check the ice for thickness and stability. The colour of ice may be an indication of its strength − clear blue to black ice is strongest, and likely the deepest.

You should only skate or walk on ice that is 15+ cm thick, 20+ cm for a group of people and 25+ cm for off highway vehicles. White opaque or snow ice should be avoided, grey ice indi-

cates the presence of water and is unsafe to stand on.

Plan Ahead: Don’t travel on the ice alone.

Leave a trip plan with someone that includes where you’re going, for how long, and when you will be back. If you are unable to leave a trip plan with someone, leave a note on your car windshield. Don’t drink alcohol and travel on ice, alcohol impairs judgment and reduces your ability to stay warm in cold conditions.

Safety: When spending time on the ice, you should always be prepared for the worst-case scenario and have an emergency plan.

Be Prepared: Carry a personal safety kit that

includes: • a lighter • waterproof matches • fire starting materials • pocket knife • whistle • cellphone in a waterproof pouch Carry a fully-charged GPS, a compass and map as a backup, and know how to use them.

Familiarize yourself with your buckles, bindings, and belts on equipment so they can be removed quickly if needed. Changing weather conditions can also affect ice from day to day.

So, remember, if in doubt, don't go out! Should you need e m e r g e n c y services, dial 911.

Wayne and Stacey Neumiller travelled to Indonesia to help their daughter celebrate her birthday and to enjoy the festive season.

A good crowd turned out for Irma’s first Light Parade on December 20. Many thanks to those who decorated their floats for the fun event.

Charlene Crabb celebrated her birthday and rang in the New Year in Valparaiso, Chile.

Tim and Jessica Younker travelled from Chicago to spend time with family and friends at Christmas.

Jagger Firkus was called up to join the Canadian junior team in Sweden. Unfortunately the team was eliminated from competition in the first round of playoffs.

Birthday greetings go out to Nora Taylor who turned

99 on New Year’s Eve. Bessie Creasy, who grew up south of Irma, passed away on Boxing Day at the age of 85. We extend our sympathy to her children and grandchildren and to the extended Pedel and Connolly families.

We were also saddened to hear of the passing of Marion Fischer on January 2.

She will be deeply missed by sons Brent, Greg, and Doug and daughters Sherri and Tracey and their families.

Ryley CAO blasts Hwy 14 Water Commission as they forego replacing 70-year-old system “Hwy 14 rakes in $120,000 every year in maintenance revenue from Ryley residents” Jana Semeniuk Village of Ryley Chief Administrative Officer Glen Hamilton-Brown expressed frustration over a recent decision by the Highway 14 water commission to not replace their aging water system during the village’s planned road reconstruction project. The decision, announced at their Dec. 14 board meeting, was in response to a recent presentation given by Hamilton-Brown to the water commission at their Nov. 16 board meeting asking the water commission for a cost-share of between $393,193 and $733,309 to replace the 70-year-old water system under 49th street along with 11 services (to homes) during a road reconstruction planned for spring 2024.

The project is estimated to cost the village $1.4 million and was approved at an Oct. village council meeting.

Hamilton-Brown said there is a good chance the water system will fail at the time of the road construction due to its age, and because he said this scenario already occurred during a road project in 2020.

Hamilton-Brown made this request to the water commission for the same project in 2021 and it was also denied. The road construction project was then pushed aside when Ryley administration changed.

In their letter to Hamilton-Brown after the 2021 proposal rejection, Highway 14 water commission said they are not eligible for grant

funding the way a municipality is.

They said they want to transfer ownership of the water distribution systems back to the municipalities so they can take advantage of grants.

“The purpose of the change in ownership is to allow the municipalities to apply for grants to reduce the amount it must borrow and finance by its ratepayers, and to reduce the cost to users of the Highway 14 Regional Water Services Commission water transmission line,” said the letter, adding that the watermain described in Ryley’s plan had more life than indicated. “The watermain described in this plan has a life expectancy exceeding 20 more years in its current condition. Best practices express this line will continue to service customers for the next 20 to 30 years. This will put replacement well into the next cycle to replace the road surface.”

Hamilton-Brown disputes the assertion that there is more life in the water lines as he said there have been three major breaks within the month this letter was written. He said the village has not yet released an official statement on the water commission’s recent decision to stand by their previous decision, but said he had comments.

“Hwy 14's 70-year-old water distribution system in Ryley is falling apart while Hwy 14 rakes in $120,000 every year in maintenance revenue from Ryley residents. That extra monthly $42 fixed fee sur-

charge is specifically for the Ryley water distribution system,” he said.

“They bought that system in good condition from the Village 32 years ago. They have collected fees from Ryley residents for many years and have not spent that money on upgrades. They have let the water system in Ryley age, it is now past its end of life, and it is now at risk for catastrophic failure. And now they want the village to ‘buy it

back’?”

Hamilton-Brown could not give details on the cost to buy the system back, but said the village agrees that transferring ownership of the water lines back to the municipality would be in their best interest. He said the Highway 14 response to their funding request will be discussed at the village council’s next meeting on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.

Local decorating contest winners Kari Janzen The Villages of Holden and Ryley, and the Town of Tofield each held their municipal holiday decorating contests.

The commercial winner in Holden was the post office, the grand prize was awarded to 5139 - 51 Ave, first prize went to 4815 - 51 Ave, second place to 4835 - 49 Ave, and third place went to 4819 - 51 Ave. Ryley winners in the business category were George’s Harness and Saddlery and Three Kings Hub. Resident winners were Tracey Sim, Maryanne and Murray Nason, and Murdoch Cameron. At approximately 11:44 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, Tofield RCMP received a report of a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Township Road 500 and Range Road 170, which is just east of Ryley. A 71-year-old male Flagstaff County resident was found deceased at the scene.

Of the occupants in the second vehicle, two 15-year-old youths were transported by ground ambulance and STARS to hospital with serious injuries.

A requested update from the Alberta RCMP Media Relations team included the following: “Vehicle 1 was a pickup truck with two occupants. The driver was the deceased and one adult passenger. Vehicle 2 occupants were a 20year-old female and two 15-year-old males. All occupants in this vehicle were from Holden.

Two were taken by ground ambulance, one of them by STARS from the collision scene. Injuries ranged from serious to minor, and all were admitted to hospital for treatment. The status of the investigation is still ongoing. A RCMP colli-

Another fatal accident occurred on Monday, January 1 at approximately 6:00 p.m. Tofield RCMP attended the scene on Highway 14 and Range Road 192. First responders found one deceased 34-year-old male resident of Tofield. A second male was located with life threatening injuries and was taken to an Edmonton area hospital by STARS air-ambulance.

It was determined that the collision between two vehicles occurred and then involved occupants got out of their vehicles and were struck by a passing motorist.

Holden Council increases FCSS grant funding Kari Janzen Staff Reporter

Holden Council held its monthly meeting on Monday, December 18 in the Village Office.

Viking/Beaver FCSS director Dawn Chrystian was present at the meeting, and council voted in favour of increasing their grant to $4,375 for the 2024 year, which is an additional $875 from the year before.

Sergeant Cameron Paul also attended and gave an update on the progress and workings of the Tofield RCMP detachment.

“We have had a good general decline, a significant decrease for this year to this point, so we’re happy to see that. The property crime had a little bump up, which was caused by additional charges being laid for possession of property obtained by crime or possession of stolen property,” Paul said.

Paul also said Constable Kevin Roscoe is in the beginning stages of a transfer, as he has served four years with the Tofield detachment, which was his first placement.

Paul said it is quite common to be moved around, especially after a first post.

“We have one member who has received their planning document for a transfer, Constable Roscoe. As to when that will happen it will probably be in the new year, either in the fourth quarter cycle for transfer or the new fiscal year in April.

“The planning document is one thing, but it can take up to three weeks to a month before you get the official document, and then it’s 90 days after that. (Roscoe’s) been four years here, and that’s the term for the Tofield detachment. It is time for him to move on, experience a different location, and we’ll get somebody else to come in. This was his first post, and it is pretty typical on a first post to have another move. The average is around four moves in a career,” said Paul.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Rosemary Offrey inquired after the possibility that a new recruit could take up residence in the village of Holden.

“I am wondering if there’s a potential that one of your new recruits could set up home in Holden. The Assumption detachment near Rainbow Lake had a RCMP officer in the town of Rainbow Lake (where Offrey previously held a CAO position), the officer lived in the town, and the visibility of that car and that individual made a huge difference in crime,” Offrey said.

“Assumption is a different situation where they can, because it’s Force housing. There is no Force housing for Tofield. They may take up residence anywhere, as long as they are living within 50 kilometres of the physical detachment,” Paul said.

Council approved The Inspections Group’s proposed fee increases, which Offrey said was not

a huge hike. Council also raised the cost of living adjustments (COLA) by 3.5 per cent for Village staff. While Offrey mentioned that often municipalities will include this adjustment for both staff and councillors, Council chose to approve it for staff only.

Mayor Tyler Beckett said that inflation was 4.8 per cent last year, and 5.6 per cent this year.

“The cost of living across the country is at 6.57 per cent now, but Beaver County just approved a 1 per cent COLA for their staff. They did approve a 3.25 last year, where we did a 2.5. Some people are approving 3 or 4 per cent this year,” Offrey said.

Council also revised Bylaw 12023 Sidewalks, Driveways and Private Property Ice and Snow Removal.

“This was revised in January and

February last year. I brought it back again because our public works foreman is concerned that the initial bylaw only dealt with sidewalks, but people are pushing snow out of their driveways onto the street as well. We would liked this tweaked so that it includes sidewalks, driveways, and any private property. Snow can’t be pushed onto the streets because if we've gone by with the grader and cleaned up the snow, and then someone decides to push the snow out of his driveway or off his lawn out onto the street, then that’s an issue. Even if the plow hasn't gone by, nobody should be pushing snow to the streets simply because it is a safety hazard,” Offrey said.

The EV charging representative is booked for the Jan. 15 meeting to have a presentation for council.

Beaver Multi 4-H Club MINOR HOCKEY REPORT participates in toy drive

Peyton Bird gets three goals, avenging tough loss before Christmas for U11 Gas Kings Kerry Anderson These are some of the results from Minor Hockey League games held recently.

Viking U11 Gas Kings (9-6-1) dropped a 14-1 game at St. Paul on Dec. 23 after Matthew Lampitt opened the scoring for Viking at 6:38 from Stetson Shepley. On Dec. 30 the Gas Kings won two games at home against Vermilion, 4-2 and 5-2. Scoring for Viking in the two game set were; Peyton Bird (3g), Kaelen Hakes (1g 1a), Stetson Shepley (1g), Taylor Docksteader (1g

1a), Tyson Crocker (1g), Easton Morken (1g), Matthew Lampitt (1g), Kruz Littau (1a), and Kolt Morken (1a). Taylen Place got both wins in goal.

Irma U15 Aces (4-9-4) dropped a 7-0 game at Vermilion on Dec. 22.

Most leagues and teams shut down over the holiday season and resume soon.

On Dec. 13 the Beaver County 4-H Multi-Club participated in the Vegreville Christmas Bureau toy drive. The Club's job this year was to sort girls' toys from ages 3-17. After sorting everything, they packed the toys into bags and put them in piles ready for delivery.
