Killam RCMP and Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS) were called to the scene of a helicopter crash just after 10 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23. The crash occurred in a brushy wooded area near Range Road 161 and Township Road 462, north and just east of Daysland. Killam RCMP, FRESS fire personnel from Daysland and Killam Fire Departments, EMS, and Viking RCMP attended the scene. STARS helicopter crews were instrumental at the scene, with STARS 3 dispatched initially and STARS 1 out of Calgary dispatched about a half-hour later. FRESS Manager Derek Homme said, “Daysland and Killam crews both responded, set up the STARS landing zone on the road, and assisted with patient care and landing the STARS units. “It was a good response by our members.” Firefighters and ground ambulances were ready on the road as the STARS crew extricated and flew patients from the crash area to the roadway for assessment and transport to hospital. Firefighter Trevor Levitt of the Killam Fire Department acted as Landing Zone officer for the STARS crew as they lifted off and landed multiple times. Two people were sent by ground ambulance to hospital while another two were airlifted by STARS. The cause of the crash

has not yet been determined. RCMP along with Killam and Daysland Fire Departments held the scene pending arrival of the Transportation Safety Board (TSB). The TSB issued a state-

ment Monday, Jan. 24, that it has deployed a team of investigators who will gather information and assess the occurrence. The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees said Tuesday, Jan. 25,

that three of the passengers were employed by Alberta Environment and Parks and were conducting aerial surveys to count deer and moose as part of a Wildlife Management Survey on Sunday.

“Our thoughts are with the injured workers, with their families, and their co-workers,” AUPE Vice-President and Chair Bonnie Gostola says. “These workers need to know that their union

stands behind them, and is always available for support. “Our fellow workers in this union are our family. When any one of us is injured on the job, we all hurt. An injury to one is an injury to all.”

‘Kids can catch’ holding art contest Lougheed

Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is giving Alberta youth a chance to win some ice fishing gear. In the ‘Kids can catch’ promotion, the ACA is asking families to have their children draw an ice fishing themed picture, and upload a photo of it, or of them holding it, to ACA. “Whether it is toddler scribbles or a masterpiece, we want to see it!” There are 50 ice fishing prize packs up for grabs. Each pack includes two ice-fishing rods, one tackle box, with tackle, hand warmers, and a multi-tool. Multiple entries from

one youth are not allowed, but entries from each child in a family are. The contest runs from Jan. 24 to Midnight Feb. 4. The winners will be selected and notified on Feb. 5 and 6, and winners must pick up their prize in Sherwood Park between Feb. 7 and 10. The entries are all done online, at: https://bit.ly/3rUoNII . The contest will give kids the chance to participate in Alberta’s next Family Fishing Weekend, scheduled for Feb. 19 to 21. During this weekend, Albertans and visitors are encouraged to give fishing a try without having to purchase a sportfishing licence.

The Sedgewick Sabres just had one game this past week, travelling to Oyen on Friday, Jan. 21, to take on the Eagles. There is no game sheet available for the game, however the Sabres recorded a 10-7 win in a close game where Sedgewick dominated in the final period to cement the win. The Sabres will be back home in Sedgewick this Saturday, Jan. 29, where they will host the Delburne Outlaws. The Sabres (5-2-2) are tied with the Irma Aces (6-1) at 12 points each, with the Provost Combines leading the league with 16 points and an 8-1 record. The Stettler Imperials handed Provost their only loss on the season back in December. Sabres Clay Lang is sitting in fourth place in the league’s scoring leaders with 15 points, with three Combines players holding the top spots. Carter Ortman, Dean Brodie, and Kyle Sanders also appear in the top 20. Make sure to catch Saturday’s game, because after that, the Sabres will

have a bit of a break until mid February, when they will host the Irma Aces at home Saturday, Feb. 12.
