Viking Council instructs bylaw officer to “start ticketing” after warnings

Wind storm causes damage

Patricia Harcourt Editor

Viking Town Council agreed to renew for one year a bylaw enforcement contract with J.A.G. Security 2018 Inc. after reviewing the work done in the last few months. Town of Viking CAO Don McLeod reported at the regular Jan. 18 meeting that he has received “no complaints” from residents about the bylaw enforcement service. McLeod said the bylaw enforcement officer does the work “on different days so people don’t know when he’s coming.” However, Councillor Clint Nearing expressed frustration over the fact the bylaw officer isn’t issuing tickets as yet, just warnings. “Some sidewalks haven’t been shovelled all year,” he said, and there are people still dumping snow on town property. Nearing made a motion “to instruct the bylaw officer to impose fines instead of warnings,” adding: “He’s asked for direction and I’m giving it to him.” “If it’s an ongoing issue, go ahead,” agreed Councillor O’Toole-Balaban. A revised motion for the bylaw officer to “start ticketing where necessary,” was passed by council. J.A.G. Securities will provide bylaw enforcement services from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021. Meanwhile, council received a report from current bylaw officer Wayne Nyback concerning activities for November and December 2020. J.A.G. covers Daysland, Forestburg, Sedgewick, Lougheed, Heisler, and Killam, as well as Viking. McLeod said the reports included “the usual things,” such as parking issues, license plates, barking dogs, and snow removal.

Two Irma businesses suffered serious damage after the wind storm on Wednesday. The Long Branch (pictured below) on Main Street had to be repaired after the roof was partially blown off. And the Irma Motel (pictured above) lost its metal roof on the north wing of the building. MARJORIE LAWSON PHOTOS.
