BY JANA SEMENIUK Emerance Maschmeyer, 27-year-old, local woman’s hockey goalie is headed for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. Hockey Canada made the announcement earlier this month, naming the 23 players on the roster including Maschmeyer and two other goalies (Kristin Campbell from Manitoba and Ann-Renée Desbiens from Quebec,) who will represent Team Canada in Women’s hockey during the 2022 Olympics. In an earlier interview, Maschmeyer described her early life growing up playing hockey in the small town of Bruderheim supported by her four siblings along with her parents. “I can't even remember not playing
hockey. In my family, that was just the way of life. I have three older siblings and a younger brother, and we all played. We had an outdoor rink that my dad built, and we were out there on the ice every day,” she said. In terms of reaching a shot at an Olympic spot, Maschmeyer said she had been working towards that goal since she was 10. According to hockeycanada.ca, the women’s hockey tournament will take place Feb. 2-16 at the National Indoor Stadium and Wukesong Sports Centre. The website also states that Canada will aim for its fifth gold medal overall and first since 2014 when they open preliminary-round action against Switzerland on Feb. 3.
Bullarama Supreme and Summer Sizzler Rodeo back for 2022 Lamont Ag. Society has virtual AGM and group sets dates welcoming back two major events BY JOHN MATHER It was a virtual annual general meeting, but the Lamont Agricultural Society not only reported a gain in income despite not holding any events in 2021, but also stated both Bullarama and the Lamont Rodeo are a go for 2022. In giving her events report secretary Rebecca Joseph said the bullarama would be held May 7. “We are in the planning stages now,” she said. “And any help with planning or if people are interested in sitting on the committee they should call me.” When Ag. Society Vice President Shelley Loren gave her report on the rodeo, she stated planning had begun on the rodeo and they were looking forward to hosting the rodeo on July 9 and 10. President Terry Eleniak reported on marketing the Society had undertaken in the past year. He said the agricultural facility had been rented out for a wedding and it had been very well
received. “Many of the guests enjoyed the rural, country atmosphere,” he said. “This might be the start of something good moving forward if we wish to pursue renting the facility for similar functions. Our facility can be dolled up quite a bit. "I must admit when I first saw it prepared for the wedding I was most impressed.” Eleniak added the Society had stayed in touch with its sponsors and “we let them know we are still here for our community and the majority of them are standing behind us, so I appreciate them for that.” In giving her vice president’s report, Shelley Loren said they were hoping to be hosting events in 2022. “We can certainly put 2021 behind us and kick it to the curb,” she said. Within the next month she hopes to have more information on hosting the events for 2022. “We’re hoping we can move forward
with this year's planning.” Joseph in giving her report as secretary suggested that because of the pandemic and many things being in limbo, she discovered that there were several areas where there was crossover between the secretary and the treasurer roles and had made a motion to combine the two positions as one. The Society did have a successful 2021 in terms of grants. Giving the treasurer's report, Joseph told the small group attending the AGM they had received a stabilization grant that provides one-time funding support for rodeos, sports, arts or other revenue-based organizations. The Agricultural Society uses the funds to support both Bullarama and the Rodeo. Despite not being held last year, the society received a grant of $11,849. Those funds will be used in 2022. The Society also received $35,806 from the Agriculture Society Grant Program. The new criteria for this
grant is a five-year average due to the current pandemic, as we have not had any normal operations for the past year. “This was great,” she said. “Because previously it had been based on the prior year’s activities and of course we hadn’t had any.” The society also has a balance of $1,870 remaining in a 50/50 casino account. Joseph added they would be hosting a casino in Camrose sometime this year, although she did point out it wouldn’t be July when rodeo activity is at its peak. They also received a farm safety grant partnering with Lamont County FCSS and the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP to host a virtual workshop in the amount of $3,125. Following elections, Eleniak remained in the position of president, with Shelley Loren as the vice president and Rebecca Joseph as the secretary-treasurer.
