FRESS-Killam Station Chief Joe Knievel received his 30-year service pin during Killamʼs annual gala, held Friday, Jan 6. Knievel (above left) received the pin from Deputy Chief Rick Krys, who was also recognized during the evening.

There was a lot to celebrate at this year’s firefighters’s gala for the FRESS - Killam Station, held Friday, Jan. 6, in Killam.

Fire Chief Joe Knievel received his 30-year service pin at the gala, along with recognition from the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association for 15 years service as Chief.

Knievel handed out service awards to firefighter Dylan Eskra, marking his 10-service milestone, and Kyle Andrews received his five-year service pin. Firefighter Victor Waldner was also recognized for five years. Three new members were also recognized. They are firefighters Kyla Baranowski, Rami Farraj, and Haley Mock. Baranowski also received recognition for passing her Basic Fireground Operations course.

Deputy Chief Rick Krys was recognized by the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association for five years as Deputy.

Chief Knievel addressed the assembled firefighters, saying “Tonight is a time for our members, their partners, and other guests to meet, socialize, and honour those who are celebrating a milestone with Killam Fire and Rescue.” Knievel noted that the first year operating under the Flagstaff Regional Emergency Services Society (FRESS) has been very successful, allowing all firefighters to become more of a united group throughout the region.

Lougheed Wheat Kings beat Bisons back-to-back Field House Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Wheat Kings floated into the Christmas break on a high after backto-back wins against the Wainwright Bisons.

The team has traditionally played the Bisons before Christmas break, and up until this year, hasn’t been able to come away with a win, since 2018.

This year, however, was a different story. After a surprising 4-3 loss to the Lloydminster Bandits at home on Dec. 17, the Wheat Kings hosted the Bisons on Dec. 21, where the teams played to a 3-2 win for Killam.

Killam’s newest player, Hayden McIndoe, started off the scoring in the first period, from Landon Kelndorfer and Brandon Zunti, followed quickly by a second Wheat King goal, this time by Ty Milgate, from Kale Hurlburt and Jordan Gagnon.

There was no scoring in the second period but plenty of action, with game misconducts for fighting on both sides.

The Bisons managed their first goal in the third period, but Killam pulled ahead by two with a midperiod shot from Carter Burton, assisted by Jordan Gagnon and Kobe Charchun, to make it 3-1.

Wainwright scored in the last seconds of third period to make it a 3-2 final for Killam.

Ty Marcinkowski got the win in goal.

Flying high off the win, Killam travelled to Wainwright on Friday, Dec. 23 for a rematch.

The Bisons got out ahead with the first goal, but Killam’s Tyler Krys scored the answering goal, from Kyler Bergseth and Chance Reum, to tie it up.

Reum scored minutes later to put the Wheat Kings up by two, from McIndoe and Burton, then Kaden VanPetten widened the gap with another, from Burton and Charchun, to make it 3-1 heading into the second period of play.

Burton scored one early in the period to pull ahead 4-1, then the Bison’s put one in later in the period to make it 4-2 heading into the final period of play.

The third period saw the Bisons score their third of

the night late in the period to draw within one, but a final goal on the empty Bison’s net in the final seconds of the game from Reum solidified the Wheat Kings’ win.

Head Coach Bob Charchun says, “Beating Wainwright back to back before Christmas gave our team a lot of confidence.

“Competing with one of the best teams in the league definitely indicates we have the right ingredients to push deep into the playoffs.”

On Saturday, Jan. 7 the season continued, as the Wheat Kings hosted the Onion Lake Border Chiefs to a 8-0 win. Notably, the Wheat Kings had 60 shots on goal, with Onion Lake netminder Joshua Irving keeping it as close as it was. Cole Bullee got his second shutout in the Killam net with the win.

On Sunday, Jan. 8, the team travelled to Lloydminster to play the Bandits, but this time it was the Wheat Kings stealing the win back.

Charchun says, “Since our break, we have had a few good skates and we are back on track.

“Playing Onion Lake can create bad habits but we took care of business and went to the Lloyd the next afternoon.

“Lloyd plays very well in their rink but our guys played very solid defensively. We were able to hang on for a 3-2 win, killing a lot of penalties in the second half of the game.

“Lloyd took one from us in our barn just before the

break so it was nice to even the season series. Our guys played a solid team game where all contributed.”

On Sunday the Wheat Kings’ Ashton Kelly got on the board first, assisted by Jordan Gagnon for an early 1-0 lead.

Landon Kelndorfer scored the team’s second goal in the second period, from Chase Rombough to put the Wheat Kings up by two, but a last-second goal from the Bandits put the two at 2-1 heading into the third.

Gagnon scored, unassisted, to put Killam ahead by 2, and another last-minutes goal from the Bandits wasn’t enough to steal another win.

This Friday, Jan. 13, the

Wainwright Bisons return to Killam with an 8 p.m. start.

Charchun has high expectations of his team. “We will prepare this week again for Wainwright who will be looking for retribution I’m sure.

“We want to continue our winning ways in 2023.

We are not far away from the top teams in the league and cannot afford to take any nights off.”

The St. Paul Canadiens are presently leading the league at 36 points, with the Wainwright Bisons and Vermilion Tigers tied for second at 34 points each.

Killam is in fourth, with just 22 games played, two back from St. Paul, and 30 points.

Jackie Lovely MLA - Camrose Happy New Year everyone!

I am very excited to announce that I was able to table Bill 205, the Official Sport of Alberta Act, which if passed would recognize rodeo as Alberta’s official sport.

Rodeo is near and dear to the hearts of Albertans; it brings families and communities together to celebrate our western heritage. The first rodeo in Canada was held in 1903 in Raymond, Alberta.

This coming year Alberta will host 43 rodeos throughout the province. Alberta rodeos vary in size with the largest being the Calgary Stampede. Over a million people travel to the city annually to take part in the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

The ten-day event brings in on average $282.5 million a year. The Stampede is one of the largest tourist attractions in the province where each year Alberta enjoys people from all over the world gathering at the event to learn about agriculture, farming, and western heritage.

The Ponoka Stampede attracts around 100,000 people and has an economic impact of $10 million. The season is wrapped up with the Canadian Finals Rodeo that is held at Westerner Park in Red Deer which attracts 43,000 people a year and the economic impact per year is around $37 million.

The Camrose constituency is home to some great rodeo events such as the Sodbuster Rodeo, The Cloverlodge Stampede, The Hardisty Rodeo, and the world-famous Bruce Stampede which has produced rodeo stars for over 100 years.

Contestants and fans travel by truck and trailer around the province. The Fuel Tax Relief program that is set to kick in on January 1st will see Alberta fully suspend the provincial fuel tax for six months making travel more affordable. The timing leads right into the rodeo season.

Albertans are going to save 13 cents per liter on gasoline and diesel from January to June. Albertans and folks in rodeo drive trucks or SUV’s. If you fill up weekly, Albertans will save about $440 on average for the next six months but if you drive a truck or SUV, you’ll save anywhere from $160 to $300 over the next six months.

Since April last year, when the first implemented fuel tax relief program was put in place, Albertans have experienced about $850 million in fuel tax savings.

Rodeos are built around strong support from the community and contestants and fans will now see relief at the pumps from the government. Not only will the athlete’s and stock providers for the rodeos enjoy savings but all fans who come out to see and support the greatest sport in our province will too.

This legislation is important to me because I see promoting rodeo as a way of keeping rural Alberta alive and vibrant. These local events need our support physically and financially in order to continue. There is great expense incurred when providing these types of events.

Have a great 2023 everyone and I hope you get out to enjoy a few rodeos this summer. It’s great family fun.

Local MLA pushes to make Rodeo official provincial sport

Generosity looks better on us than entitlement It’s a new year and many of us are looking to turn over a new leaf, whether it be setting goals, self improvement, or just getting a better handle on our overall wellbeing.

Over the past few months I’ve bit my tongue a few times when I’ve spoken to a friend who can seemingly do nothing but complain about all the things that happen to them, their circumstances, or just their generally boredom.

I’ve wanted to say that they should try a little gratitude practice, that they don’t know how good they actually have things. I’ve wanted to ‘prescribe’ a little dose of random acts of kindness.

The one big secret about helping others is that it also gives you an amazing burst of feeling great.

More and more, in the news and everywhere else, I see examples of people who are acting just so entitled. They think they ‘deserve’ to have everything they want, and all they can think about is themselves, and what they have, and what other people think of them.

I imagine what a better world it would be if they’d stop thinking they “deserve” anything, and think instead how they could serve; how they could make the world a better place, or even their world a better place.

For those who think they ‘deserve’ to be happy, I wish they could look at where true happiness lies.

While I’m no mental health expert, I know one thing; it won’t come from more selfies; it won’t come from labels, or who has the most stuff.

It’s also remarkable to me how much I value and remember even the smallest acts of kindness other have done for me.

It makes me want to pass that on, to give someone else the amazing gift of kindness. That’s what I want to work on this year.

The Sedgewick Sabres are in second place in the ECSHL, coming back after the Christmas break with an away overtime win against the Irma Aces this past Saturday, Jan. 7 The Sabres held the Aces scoreless in the first period, dunking the only goal for a 1-0 lead, then a scoreless second period had the two teams heading into the third each desperate for the win.

Sedgewick managed two more goals, and the Aces evened things up with three goals of their own.

Overtime saw the Sabres with the win.

Forestburg hosted the Oyen Eagles on Saturday night, where the two teams played to a 6-3 final with the Eagles on top.

The two stayed fairly even through the first and second periods with one

each in both, heading into the final period tied 2-2. The Eagles scored four to the Flyers one in the third to end up 6-3.

On Friday, the Hughenden Jets hosted the Delburne Outlaws, where the two played to a 6-4 win for the Jets.

The Jets outshot the Outlaws 4225.

Game sheets were not available at press time.

At present the Oyen Eagles are leading the league, with 19 points in 10 games, with the Sabres in second place with nine games and 14 points.

Stettler and Provost are tied with 12 points each, with Stettler having a game in hand, and the Aces have 11 points in nine games, a strong fifth place.

Next come the Delburne Outlaws, with six points, the Coronation Royals with three points, and the Forestburg Flyers with two points.

Well hello folks. Anthony Shott and Kyla Toole gave Hardisty a wonderful gift.

They gave us a New Years’ baby that was born at the Wainwright Hospital. Baby boy, Archer Malcolm Shott, entered the world at 8:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and weighed in at eight pounds, eight ounces, and about 21.5” (53.5cm) in length.

He is the sweetest little boy and the grandparents are ecstatic. They are Marg and Ray Shott of Hardisty and Pam and Brad McKenzie of Hardisty.

Grandma Marg was telling me that the staff were busy with Mom after delivery, so to ensure that the baby experienced the "skin to skin" contact Daddy had to help. He had to expose his bare chest, so the baby could lay on Daddy. It would be warm and then he could feel/hear his Daddy's heartbeat. I imagine it would be so soothing, es-

pecially after the trauma of birth.

There is all sorts of research that states skin to skin contact stimulates a certain part of the brain so the baby moves to the breast, can attach and start feeding.

I don't think Anthony was providing any milk, but he would have good carpenter muscles to support the weight of the baby.

The baby will gaze upon the parent and encourage social and emotional development, better temperature maintenance, and less crying. They experience a more stable heartbeat and breathing and much more.

This was all initiated by two doctors in South America in the 1970s when they did not have enough incubators to care for their premature babies. They would place the babies directly on the mother's bodies, covered by a wrap.

The babies thrived.

The doctors named this technique, the kangaroo mother method, later shortened to "kangaroo care." Interesting isn't it?

Now that the weather has warmed up our four

female cats are really frisky.

They are all practising "skin to skin' contact with the larger cream coloured cat that we thought was a female. Wrong! It is a male. We have never been able to pick that one up, so we never checked the genitalia. Good Lord, I don't know where all these kittens will be birthed?

The library has had all the Community Calendars in since before X-mas. Remember to pick your calendar up. It is one of our major fundraisers.

The Hardisty Community sends condolences to the family on the passing of Cecil Rempel. He was a long-time resident of Hardisty and recently passed on at the Hardisty Long Term Care Facility.

Remember, you are all welcome to come to the library and work on our ongoing puzzle table.

The first church service of 2023, Epiphany Sunday, had 13 people in attendance.

Reverend Diane Crewe was in the pulpit at the United Church in Alliance. We always have fellowship after the service with a snack or lunch in the basement.

There is talk about a choir forming. My concern is the choir may be bigger than the congregation, so if you can’t carry a tune come join me in

the pews.

An enthusiastic 15 gardeners turned out on Thursday night, Jan. 5, for an organizational meeting to have a community garden. An executive was elected.

Plans are for raised beds, a fenced area on the old arena site. Water is available from the village and talk was about catching rainwater from the recreation centre’s roof.

Argyle Women’s Institute program books for 2023 have been made. In March the branch celebrates 110 years. There will be a District event here on Saturday, March 25 which we will incorporate with an anniversary celebration.

The library board meets on Tuesday. If you haven’t been in for a while, stop by and check it out. There are new books, a new look, and friendly service. We have a very good selection, including large print books, and anything we don’t have can be ordered.

The Alliance Rockets are playing hockey. I am not sure of their schedule, but they are planning a tournament the first week in February.

The Senior Drop In usually has a card game going as well as a jigsaw puzzle on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

That is also the time the library is open, kill two birds with one stone.

RCMP Report

Killam RCMP receive multiple complaints of Fraud over $5,000 Killam RCMP Detachment Calls for service from Dec. 16 to Jan. 5, prepared and supplied by the Killam RCMP Detachment.

On Friday, Dec. 16, Killam RCMP members were called to a report of a disturbance in Sedgewick. The complainant reported unknown people in his house.

Members offered the complainant the option to leave and ask the three other males to leave. The complainant advised he would leave the next day.

On the same day an over-$5,000 online fraud was reported. Killam RCMP member attended the complainant’s bank with consent for financial information release. The file is still under investigation.

Later, a suspicious vehicle was reported in Amisk. A vehicle was parked in front of the complainant’s house. The complainant approached the vehicle and it took off.

Killam RCMP members attended and the vehicle was gone.

A suspicious vehicle was reported on Saturday, Dec. 17, at Highway 36 and 608. Members were advised when they called the complainant the vehicle was gone.

On Sunday, Dec. 18, an abandoned vehicle was reported near a property in Alliance. Killam RCMP members ran the plate and the VIN number.

Neither plate or vehicle was stolen. Previous owner was notified. They confirmed the vehicle had been sold and was no longer his.

On Monday, Dec. 19, Killam RCMP received a 911 call of a suspected break and enter in Sedgewick. The complainant was concerned someone was still in the residence. Killam RCMP Members attended, cleared the unit. No one was located. Safety planning was completed with the complainant.

On Wednesday, Dec. 21, a report came in of a vehicle blocking a lane on

Highway 13 near Killam.

Killam RCMP member attended and spoke to the registered owner who had already called a tow for mechanical problems.

On Thursday, Dec. 22, a deer collision was reported to the Killam RCMP. The complainant had hit a deer on Highway 53 west of Forestburg. The complainant left his vehicle on the highway. When he returned he found items missing. The file is still under investigation.

On Friday, Dec. 23, Killam Members were called out to Amisk for a disturbance.

A complainant called to report her neighbour had made threats against her husband.

Killam Members attended and discovered that the suspect had also been involved in another assault. The suspect was arrested and held for a JIR, and subsequently released on conditions.

An online fraud over $5,000 was reported later in the day to the Killam Detachment.

A Killam RCMP member has contacted the banking institution and the file is still under investigation.

On Saturday, Dec. 24, it was reported that a semi and a car were in the ditch outside of Hardisty.

Killam RCMP members attended and assisted in controlling traffic while the vehicle was being towed out of the ditch.

On Monday, Dec. 26, Killam Detachment received a call for service for a suspicious vehicle.

Killam Member located the vehicle in Hardisty.

Killam member ran the drivers’ licence and found that the suspect is a suspended driver. Suspect was ticketed and vehicle seized.

On Tuesday, Dec. 27, a report of suspicious persons around a residence in Heisler. Patrols were made by Killam members. No one was located.

On Wednesday, Dec. 28, a suspicious vehicle was reported stuck on a road in Strome. Caller was concerned the vehicle was stolen.

A Killam member attended, and discovered the vehicle was not stolen and the registered owner was present with the vehicle. Vehicle was removed.

Also on Wednesday a phone scam was reported to the Killam Detachment. The complainant was defrauded of well over $5,000.

Killam RCMP members are following up with the Complainant’s bank and the file is still under investigation.

Later in the day Killam members attended a residence in Forestburg for a house arrest check. The Suspect did not present themselves. A warrant has been issued for arrest.

On Thursday, Dec. 29, the Killam RCMP were called out to assist with an individual found suffering from frost bite and hypothermia.

Members spoke to the Subject and he advised no further police assistance was needed.

The same day RCMP

attended an abandoned vehicle/motor vehicle collision near Hardisty.

Subject had the car towed and promised to attend detachment to complete collision report.

On Sunday, Dec. 31, a report was made to police of a suspicious person dressed in camo and carrying a firearm on Highway 861 near Galahad. No threats were made and the firearm was not pointed at anyone. Patrols were made and suspect was not located.

On Wednesday, Jan. 4, a vehicle was reported in the ditch on Range Road 155 with people standing around it. Killam RCMP members attended the scene. The driver was identified and a Mandatory Alcohol Screening was issued. The subject failed two breath tests.

The vehicle was subsequently seized and the operator’s Drivers licence was suspended.

On Thursday, Jan. 5, a disturbance was reported

outside of a residence in Sedgewick. The complainant indicated that a vehicle was spinning its tires and the occupants were yelling at her neighbour’s residence. Members attended and investigation led to a suspect. The suspect was located and questioned the next day. No evidence was identified to support any charges.

Also reported and attended to by Killam RCMP during this period were: Five Abandoned Vehicles, two Sudden Deaths; two Failure to Complies, three False Alarms, nine complaints under the Mental Health Act; 10 reports of Suspic i o u s Person/Vehicle/Property.

The Killam Detachment recorded 25 reportable Traffic Collisions; two Trespassing complaints, and police were asked to perform four Wellbeing checks within the last few weeks.

BRSD board planning in-depth review of attendance boundaries last set in 1995 Leslie Cholowsky Editor

During the November 2022 board meeting of trustees at the Battle River School Division (BRSD) the board decided to “conduct a complete and thorough Attendance Boundary review over the course of the next year.”

BRSD says that the purpose of the review is to ensure rural community schoolers are properly

supported to provide quality educational opportunities; that boundaries aren’t influenced by artifical factors such as municipal lines; that boundaries reflect changing demographics, and that attendance boundaries are “logical and efficient for each school.”

The board will use a consultant to carry out the review.

The present boundaries were set when Battle River School Division

was established, in 1995, and most have not changed since then.

Trustees reviewed input from 2,500 parents, students, and staff in order to decide between four options for the 202324 school calendar.

Trustee Dwight Dibben, representing Flagstaff County on the board, requested a recorded vote, and was one of two not in favour of the proposed calendar version. The 2023-24 calendar was

supposed to be posted on the BSRD website by mid-December, but it has not yet been done.

Superintendent Dr. Rita Marler said in a letter to parents sent early November that their input would “will influence important decisions about when the school year starts, whether or not there will be a fall break and the scheduling of Professional Development and Early Dismissal Days.”

Rural Crime Watch celebrating six years of education Jan Bergseth Club Secretary

In late 2019/early 2020, the idea of hosting a class of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course for women only was suggested by one of the directors of the Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch.

Secretary Jan Bergseth says, “As we searched for an instructor to teach this class, the world shut down with COVID-19 and any plans to host any in-person events were put on the back burner.

“Fast forward to spring 2022 and the interest was still there for this first female-only class.”

The Flagstaff Rural Crime Watch (FRCW) Society covered the costs of the venue, lunch, and snacks with students paying for the course.

An instructor was found for May 7 and 8 and the class was full in no time.

FRCW received such positive feedback from all the ladies in attendance.

Bergseth says, “They felt very comfortable asking questions and actively being involved in the demonstrations.”

She adds that since then there have been three more classes, open to men and women, in June, September, and November, and 97 people have successfully completed the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.

“We are quite proud of this and look forward to continuing the education process for this and other areas of crime prevention.”

Their next firearms course is scheduled for January 2023, with another tentatively scheduled for

March.

Bergseth says, “We are also currently working on setting up a CAPTURE registration program.”

This is a voluntary registry of home cameras and surveillance systems which can ultimately help the RCMP when a crime occurs. The program does not give RCMP access to images, but serves as an indicator that cameras are present and operating in the vicinity.

Bergseth adds, “We also are working with our Killam RCMP to produce a pamphlet of what to do when suspicious persons and vehicles enter your yard.”

With an active social media presence often tracking real-time incidents, the FRCW Society Facebook page continues to be our best communication tool for our area and others.

The executive and other volunteers worked at a fundraising barbeque over the summer, and also worked a casino in the late

fall to help raise funds for future gun courses and the other projects in the works.

The FRCW has over 120 members, and is always looking for new members, as well as those willing to serve as directors or on the executive.

The Society’s annual

general meeting was held in late November, where Chair Kim Cannady agreed to serve for a second term, as did recording secretary Jan Bergseth, and treasurer Mabel Thompson.

Firefighters Continued from Front Knievel reported that in 2022 the Killam station’s training and meeting time came to 642 hours. “We responded to 55 calls totalling 720 hours.” He said that’s about average, but is higher than in 2021.

The Killam Station responded to 22 motor vehicle accidents, 11 alarm calls, eight structure fires, six wildland fires, four calls for medical aid, two vehicle fires, one rescue call, and one aircraft emergency.

Knievel said, “I want to thank all our members for their continued support, their good work, and dedication.

“Your commitment to safely and efficiently provide fire and rescue services to our community is very much appreciated.

“Special thanks go out to all our partners and family members who are often without us for family events because we have responded to a fire call. Your contribution is noted and very much appreciated.

Battle River U11 Female Knights (0-10-0) dropped two games before Christmas, losing 3-1 at Bonneville against Lakeland on Dec. 17, then 3-1 the next day at Cold Lake. Makenzie Muirhead scored both BR goals over that weekend with Charlie Child assisting on both.

Battle River U13 Female Knights (4-2-2) won a 9-3 road game at St. Paul on Dec. 17, firing 71 shots on the Canadiens’ goaltender.

BR was actually down 1-0 after the first period in the contest. Kate MacKinnon scored a hat trick for BR, and Brittyn Zentner (2g 2a) had a four-point game.

Leland Swanson got the win in goal. On Dec. 18 at home, Jets’ Quinn Holte scored the winner with only 6:55 remaining for a 4-3 win. The goal gave Quinn a hat trick.

Trusten Dyck scored the other Jets goal. Assists went to; Kylan Johannesson, Zane Peacock, Alivia Motley and Jaxon Sayer. Sadie Hunter got the win in goal.

Battle River U13 Female Knights (4-5-2) dropped back to back to back games over the weekend. On Friday at Killam Arena, BR lost a 2-1 second period lead and lost a 3-2 game against Lakeland. Evelyn Hampshire and Kate MacKinnon scored for BR. On Saturday at Sedgewick Arena, BR lost another 2-1 lead and fell 4-2 against Lloydminster. Brit-

tyn Zentner and Grace Edwards scored for Knights.

On Sunday at Killam Arena, Battle River scored first but lost a 2-1 game against Lloydminster. Grace Dolany scored from Brittyn Zentner.

Despite the three losses, Maci-Lee O’Hare had a .920 save percentage weekend in goal for Knights making 103 saves. She has the second best save percentage in the entire league.

Battle River U15 Female Knights (6-2-2) travelled to Onion Lake on Sunday and shutout the home team 130, firing 99 shots on goal.

Cabrie Tanton scored six goals (6g 1a) and Ella Younger got a hat trick for BR. Other scorers were; Surai Thomson (1g 5a), Danica Boger (2g 2a), Keeley Sorken (1g 2a), and Evan Wallace (1a). Maddison Eckstrand got the shutout for Knights. Cabrie is the top scorer in the league with 22 goals and 27 pts in only 10 GP. Maddison has the best GAA in the league at 1.44 and average save percentage of .933.

Knights (5-6-0) won a 6-2 home game on Saturday at Sedgewick Arena against Fort McMurray in a penalty filled game. Rylee Zimmel (2g 2a) and Cabrie Tanton (2g 1a) had two-goal games.

Paige Zimmer and Emma Tuftin also scored for BR. Assists went to; Alyssa Zimmer (2a) and Caylin Brumwell. Abby Krys got the win in goal. On Sunday at Vermilion, BR scored first but lost a 2-1 road game.

Samantha Holt scored only 3:41 into the contest, assisted by Paige Zimmer and Bailey Djos. Both Tigers goals came in the middle frame. Despite the loss, Abby Krys had a .938 save percentage game in goal and is among the top goaltenders in the entire league.

Hughenden boys U11 Jets (10-6-1) travelled to Cold Lake on Saturday and skated away with an 8-5 win. Reid Walters scored four for Jets (4g 1a), and Grady Anhorn scored two.

Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling were on the alley on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Verna Erickson bowled the high single of 255 and the high triple of 615. Erickson has the high average of 179.

As for the teams, the Rolling Pins scored the high single of 98 and the high triple of 104. The Bowling Bags still have the lead with 50 points.

The bowler of the week was Marilyn Patten, with 52 points above average.

Verna Erickson and Kari Sanders bowled three spares in a row while Sharon Wylie bowled five.

Sedgewick Mixed Bowling bowled from Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Thursday, Jan. 5.

On the ladies’ side: Karen Keogh bowled the high single of 229 and the high triple of 547. Verna Erickson has the high average of 178.

On the men’s side: Garry Klein scored the high single of 250 and the high triple of 665. Garry Klein still has the high average, now at 209.

The team high single of 138 points above average was scored by the L. J.’s as well as the high triple of 149 points above average. The 4-D’s still have the lead, still with 60 points.

Holiday fun for HPS students Cameron Stringer Student Reporter

Hughenden Public School (HPS) made the end of 2022 memorable by constructing fun events for students, staff, and community members. This year HPS has had fun events to get into the spirit of Christmas, such as the traditional Christmas concert and the annual Christmas dinner. Even though there were lots of snow days when busses were not running that last week of school, we still had good turnouts for the concert and the dinner.

When asked why we do the dinner every year, principal Ryan Duffett said, “We do it because it is a great opportunity to celebrate with the community and, of course,

the upcoming holiday."

A member from the student council said, “I think it went well, when about 300 people from our communities come, so we know we must be doing something right."

This year, the student council wanted to add to the fun, so they decided to put on The 10 Days of Christmas. For the last 10 days of school, students and staff got to dress up and compete in fun things, like the Classroom Door Decorating Contest, Christmas Tree Topper Day, and Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. These events created a fun and festive atmosphere leading up to the holidays and we hope and plan on doing fun events like these for Christmas and other holidays for years to come.

Smith was sworn in to office as Alberta’s 19th Premier during a ceremony held Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Alberta Lieutenant Governor Salma Lahkani oversaw the swearing-in, and

announced her intention to run in a byelection in Brooks-Medicine Hat. That vacancy came open when MLA Michaela Frey resigned earlier in the month.

Smith said, “I would like to thank Michaela Frey for her service representing the constituents of Brooks-Medicine Hat. She was a strong voice in caucus and took the lead on many important issues to stand up for the rights of Albertans and I wish her all the best in the future.

Flagstaff County, through the Economic Development Department, held the fifth Flagstaff Celebrates Success event. The evening was a celebration of local small businesses, as well as the innovative programs and collaborations made through the county.

Jarret Hayes is the Village of Lougheedʼs new Fire Chief, after former chief Mike Marlow retired with 20-plus years of service under his belt.

Hayes has also served on the Daysland Department, and continues to serve with the Hardisty Fire Department. He has instituted joint training nights with Hardisty since becoming chief.

This June the Heisler Fire Department celebrated decades of service by their former chief and deputy chief, Joe Martz and Mickey Heisler, on the occasion of their joint retirement. Long time firefighter, Shawn Badry, agreed to take on the role of Chief. With 17 years of service under his belt, he felt he was ready for the next challenge.

November The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) held a Community Builders dinner in Killam to honour Jack and Sharon Moser. The evening drew more than 250 people in all, and by early estimates, raised over $40,000 towards a new BRCF fund in the Moser’s name.

Weekend coverage for the emergency department is in place.

AHS says the emergency department will continue to be open seven days a week from 7 in the morning to 10 at night Monday through Thurs-

Forestburg School held their awards celebration for the 2021/22 school year. Every year, the school celebrates students' social contributions, personal growth, academic, and athletic achievements through a number of awards and scholarships.

Prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medals awarded Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Seven thousand Albertans will receive the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medal by Jan. 23 next year, and a number of Flagstaff residents have been honoured over the past few weeks.

Alberta Municipalities held two different awards ceremonies over the weekend of Nov. 26 and 27 to present Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medals.

Two local non-elected recipients under the Citizen Community Builders program included Dwight Dibben of Forestburg, and Muriel Fankhanel of Daysland (formerly Alliance). They received their awards during a special ceremony in Edmonton at the Westin Hotel. AM president Cathy Heron presented all the awards.

Fankhanel was nominated by Alliance Mayor Leslie Ganshirt for her dedication to volunteerism during her time in Alliance.

The awards were also presented to all sitting mayors including Wayne Button of Daysland, Leslie Ganshirt of Alliance, Wayne Jackson of Hardisty, Ben Kellert of Killam, Stephen Levy of Sedgewick, Brandon Martz of Heisler, Shawn Sieben of Lougheed, Blaise Young of Forestburg, Gill Shelby of Hughenden, and Bill Rock of Amisk. Not all were able to attend either of two ceremonies held over

the weekend.

Rural Municipalities Association handed out medals to all reeves during their recent conference a few weeks prior, at which time Flagstaff County Reeve Don Kroetch received the medal from RMA President Paul McLauchlin.

Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely held her own presentation ceremony on Monday, Nov. 28, for the nominations she received.

Lovely said the awards were created for and given to Albertans for outstanding service, like the late Queen, who have dedicated themselves to family, community, and their country. “They have demonstrated a contribution to Canada, or Alberta, or a particular region in an Alberta community.” For nominations submitted through Lovely as Camrose MLA, “They must live within the Camrose constituency. They may have also shown significant community support during COVID-19 at a local level, or significant volunteer service at a local level.”

Lovely said the Platinum Jubilee medal was created by the Province to recognize and honour a significant royal milestone. “It is the only significant royal milestone that has not been commemorated by a national commemorative medal.” Seeing a need for recognition, especially coming out of the See JUBILEE P9

Recently the Society of the Friends of Daysland School gathered at the Daysland Post Office where they received a grant from Canada Post’s Community Foundation in the amount of $5,000.

This is a Project Grant, usually given to schools, school/parent organizations, like Daysland’s libraries, daycares, Indigenous groups, recreation facilities, and other organizations.

Despite the frigid weather, the Killam Chamber of Commerce’s annual Parade of Lights and Christmas at the Crossroads event was very well attended, with loads of indoor things to do.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) announced that it has expanded options to access addiction and mental health supports in the Flagstaff County community with a new weekly walk-in clinic, in addition to the existing weekday services available through appointment.

With just over half of eligible voters turning out, the Village of Alliance held a by-election to fill the empty seat on Council left by the passing of Sylvia Wold earlier in the year. Nomination Day resulted in four people coming forward: Tammy Hopps, Kerry Komix, Jeffrey McNaught, and Stephen Wyse. The By-Election was held on Tuesday, Nov. 29, where Stephen Wyse gained a majority of the votes (38). Hopps, Komix, and McNaught gained 14, eight, and seven, respectively.

The Flagstaff Food Bank, with the help of Wild Rose Co-op and local residents, just collected a record amount of food donations through the Food Bank’s Advent Calendar. This November, with the assistance of all of Flagstaff including all those Wild Rose Co-op Killam customers and staff, we collected 4,439.11 pounds of food!

The Walter Jahns Singers performed in Forestburg returning to the stage for the first time since Christmas 2019. Director Carl Jahns and accompanist Diane Jahns are joined by choir members to entertain the crowd with their beautiful voices.

There’s a new outdoor skating rink in the Village of Lougheed, thanks to some helpful volunteers and donations of work, supplies, and equipment.

Police and RCMP still processing the scope of seized property in Camrose, which has resulted in more than 100 stolen trailers, vehicles, farming equipment, and other machinery being seized.

Search warrants were conducted at 17 locations, predominantly in Camrose, but also in Camrose County, Ponoka County, and Hillsdale, SK. The search warrants were carried out due to part of a lengthy investigation into organized crime.

The Community Pressʼs ʻFill the Treeʼ campaign has been running for over 20 years now. It started as a modest $5per-name fundraiser to help the Flagstaff Christmas Sharing program, which delivers hampers to those less fortunate at Christmastime. In recent years, donation numbers have begun to balloon, specifically last year when over $7,000 came in during the campaign.

This year, however, exceeded all expectations again as an incredible $10,500 was donated by our generous readers. All four of our Caribou Publishing papers hosted a local ʻFill the Treeʼ campaign this year, raising over $23,000 in total.

Alfred Elmer Blumhagen

March 24, 1930 December 29, 2022 Alfred Blumhagen was born on March 24, 1930 in Galahad and passed away in his Daysland home at the age of 92 years.

Alfred and Jean (Denham) were married on August 17, 1957 and farmed south of Galahad along the Battle River, where they raised their

three children on the family farm.

Alfred took pleasure in outdoor activities like camping with family, hunting, fishing, and hiking. He enjoyed leather work, carving, and creating many beautiful leather projects for family and friends. In retirement Alfred spent his days gardening at the acreage and was actively involved in local senior’s clubs playing cards and floor curling.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean, three children; Kevin (Susanne), Karen and Kathy (Greg), three grandchildren; Tera (Kirk), Levi (Craig), Ethan (Christine), and

five great grandchildren. He is predeceased by granddaughter Nicole and, being the youngest of a large family, he is the last of his siblings to leave.

Memorial donations in Alfred’s name may be made to the charity of your choice.

Cecil Ronald Rempel

August 12, 1934 – January 5, 2023 Cecil Ronald Rempel of Sedgewick, Alberta, passed away on January 5, 2023 at the age of 88 years. He was born to Ben and Meta in Rosthern, Saskatchewan.

Cecil went to work for the CPR in 1949 on the telegraph crew. In 1952 he became a telegrapher in Rutland, Saskatchewan and arrived in Hardisty in 1953.

Former Lougheed Mayor honoured with Platinum Jubilee Medal

The Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal commemorates the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne as Queen.

To celebrate this historic event, the Medal program recognizes outstanding service from Albertans who have dedicated themselves to family, community, and country.

The Library Association of Alberta was invited to award Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal to deserving Albertans within the library community.

The Association nominated former Lougheed Mayor and past Chair of the Parkland Regional Library Board, Deb Smith. “Deb has been a

passionate and vocal advocate for public library services locally and provincially for over 30 years,” says Hailey Halberg, Marketing Specialist for Parkland Regional Library System.

Smith was initially employed with a small rural library and realized the impact she could have on the political and advocacy side of the library once appointed to the Parkland Regional Library System board.

Smith recently completed 11 years as the board chair, and even as she passes the torch, she continues to build relationships and partnerships to benefit libraries across Alberta.

Donald James Campbell

1929 - 2022 It is with great sadness and much love that we say goodbye to a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Don was born May 21, 1929, in Kerrobert, SK, and passed away November 27, 2022, in Wainwright

hospital at the age of 93 years.

He was predeceased by his parents Kelly and Gladys; sisters Phyllis and Shirley; brothers-in-law Bryan, Len, Ken, and Doug; and sister-in-law Beverly.

Don will be remembered by his loving wife of 65 years Shirley, sons Warren (Patricia) and Terry (Rong), and granddaughter Simone. He will also be missed by his sister Kathleen; sisters-in-law Angela and Jean (George); brothers-in-law Chuck (Lauren), Jim Tradewell, Jim Lloyd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held on Dec. 3 at the Hardisty Elks Hall. The service was conducted by Pastor Paul and the Eulogy was given by his son Terry. Lunch was provided after the service by the Royal Purple and Hardisty Hospital Auxiliary.

He may be gone, but his memory will not be forgotten.

Don worked for CPR for 34 years and lived in many communities. He had fond memories of time spent in Furness, Macklin, Baldewinton, Love, SK, Salvador, Senlac, Neilburg, and finally calling Hardisty home.

After retiring from the CPR he took up another position as caretaker of the Parkland Manor in Hardisty for 15 years.

He enjoyed curling, golf, fishing, camping, and all sports. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with Shirley in Yuma, AZ. They spent 24 years travelling to Yuma in the winter.

AgKnow inviting Alberta farmers to weigh in on mental health Leslie Cholowsky Editor

AgKnow.ca, Alberta’s approach to farm mental health, is gearing up for its first community engagement campaign Feb. 1.

The Alberta Farm Mental Health Network was created March 2021 to “Provide expert advice to policy makers and program developers to assist in developing a ‘made for Alberta’ approach to farm mental health.”

The Network presented a completed White Paper in the middle of 2022, releasing the results of a needs assessment completed between November 2021 and April 2022.

Four broad recommendations came out of the report. One of them was to establish an Alberta Farm Mental Health Network, connecting healthcare, the ag industry, and researchers to help bridge communications and service gaps, and stimulate research on farmers in Alberta.

The second recommendation was to build mental health capacity among farmers and farming communities by providing mental health literacy and referral support tailored to farmers and those working in farming communities or agricultural businesses.

The third recommendation was to enhance farm-culture knowledge among healthcare providers and those providing mental health support in farming communities.

The final recommendation was to support community based programs in farming communities and agricultural societies; vital for peer support in farming communities.

The study found that Alberta is the largest agricultural producer, accounting for 40 per cent of the total Canadian herds. Alberta is also a major producer of crops, second only to Saskatchewan.

The report also discovered that in a review of Canadian farms, conducted at the University of Guelph, it was found that Alberta has not experienced the same rate of decline of farms compared to other provinces, leading researchers to infer that farming continues to be an important part of Albertans’ lives.

But farming comes with stress, and that takes a toll on mental health and wellbeing.

Research also revealed that farmers generally face barriers to seeking help for mental health issues.

Farmers across Canada cited lack of accessible mental health supports, lack of anonymity in seeking mental health support, stigma about mental health in the agricultural community, and a feeling that healthcare providers don’t necessarily all understand the culture of farming.

In 2019, Alberta’s Ag. Service Boards asked the province for a dedicated crisis line resource; an industry specific response for farmers. Later in the year the Federal government released “Mental Health: A priority for our Farmers,” a report which contained another 10 recommendations for the government to consider to support farmers.

In late 2021, a pilot program was started by the federal government and the Province of Ontario, to launch mental health initiatives that target farmers and those in the agricultural industry, investing $7 million in the launch.

The Alberta Network studied the program being piloted in Ontario, and said, “While their recommendations to support farmer mental health align with what we discovered in our needs assessment... we also learned that the programs being piloted in Ontario for a possible national roll out will not translate well in Alberta, as they do not reflect the values, culture, and needs of our farmers, nor do they make the most efficient use of the existing resources and community based model of service delivery already in our province.”

The white paper also includes two successful case examples, one from Flagstaff-area farmer Dwayne Kelndorfer.

When Kelndorfer began to feel like farming was becoming a burden, he reached out to his doctor, and entered into a treatment program. He calls that three-week experience “life changing.”

He says he met incredible people during the process, and that it really opened his eyes. “I learned that all kinds of people have trouble with mental health.”

Kelndorfer says that he thinks attitudes about mental health are gradually changing in rural and farming communities, and say he feels the stigma associated with seeking treatment is slowly lifting. “Even if comments or jokes can be heard around town,” Kelndorfer believes that coming forward and sharing his experience is helpful for him and important for others.

He’s already discovered that relating his own experience inspired someone else to seek some help.

Kelndorfer praises the professionals who helped him in his time of need.

Beyond clinical resources, he’d like attention paid to the potential of farmer-to-farmer peer groups to enhance mental health services available to farmers.

The report notes that there is really a lack of Alberta-specific research on mental health issues among farmers, resulting in a limited understanding

The establishment of the Alberta Farm Mental Health Network was the first recommendation to come to light.

Now the Network is seeking help, through information, and personal stories.

It’s looking for lived experience from farmers and producers who have experienced unique farming stressors, livestock depopulation, or farm transition. They presently have a research study underway and need

input from the people it is most aimed at helping.

Anyone participating in the research by sharing their story will remain anonymous and confidential.

Any report of the findings will present data in aggregate, and quotes will use pseudonyms.

The Network is also looking to build a broad referral list of mental health professionals who understand the agriculture industry and unique stressors of farmers and their families.

The final recommendation of the report is for the Province to continue supporting community based programs, including ag. societies, “as these represent important avenues for peer support for farmers.

“With this in mind, we recommend the government give consideration to farm mental health when making budget decisions on communitybased programs and services in rural areas to ensure the least amount of stress and disruption to farmers and farming communities.”
