Special message from the Governor General of Canada Congratulations to the residents of the Village of Forestburg on the 100th anniversary of your community.

Located on Treaty 6 territory, the Village of Forestburg and the surrounding area have a storied past, notable as a bustling trading and travelling route for the Plains Cree and other First Nations. In 1904, settlers came from

Britain, Scandinavia, and Germany to homestead in the area.

They began settling the rich farmland, opened small “gopher hole” mines, and started a new community, helped by the coming of the railway. The Village of Forestburg was incorporated in August 1919 and has been thriving ever since.

100 years. This is no

small achievement.

While remaining true to their coal mining, agricultural, and railway heritage, the residents of Forestburg also have their eyes turned toward the future, having developed oil, gas, and power generation as part of their basis economy.

Forestburg is a historical treasure, but it is first and foremost a vi-

brant community.

Over the years, its residents have created a collective synergy and a unique lifestyle that make this centennial village a wonderful place to live, work, and play.

Message from Alberta Premier Jason Kenney On behalf of the Government of Alberta, it is my pleasure to send greetings to the Village of Forestburg 100th Anniversary Celebration.

The history of Alberta is reflected in the province we are today industrious people working together to create communities on this rich and bountiful land.

The Village of Forestburg has its own story, one that has seen many of the highlights of our province’s development. From Indigenous peoples to European explorers, from pioneer farmers to miners, from the railway to energy and tourism: Forestburg’s rich past has created a vibrant inheritance that keeps this village thriving.

As you gather to celebrate this historic milestone, I hope you will be warmed by fond memories and cheered by Forestburg’s enduring community spirit.

The restored Devonian Park and community history book will stand as lasting monu-

ments to this remarkable place and the extraordinary people who have made Forestburg what it is today.

burg’s 100th anniversary celebration will be the culmination of four years of work by the Forestburg History Book Committee.

The Committee has operated under the Forestburg Historical Society, and all income realized from sales of the books will be used to support the museum’s programs.

A huge thank you to our committee! Countless hours have been contributed to the book by these dedicated volunteers: Marion Oberg Riise and Dianne Oberg (co-editors), Amber Prehn, René Neumann, Penny McNabb, Brenda Oberg, Bob Coutts, Betty Rae Andre, Vicky Litke, Terry King, Doug Halberg, Jeanette Herle, Susan Lemay, Sheila Erion, Deb Knodel, Barb Roth, Liz Falls, and Edith Jesswein, and Ruby Miller, who was our first sales manager. Special mention is due to Amber who started out giving a hand with typing stories, then in 2018 she took on book sales when Ruby stepped down as manager; and on top of that she represented the History Book on the 100th Committee.

And also due to René, the only volunteer who worked on both the first book and this one!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to contribute stories and photos. This is a community history book, and the community really responded.

There are nearly 600 stories in our book. Thank you to the Province of Alberta for the Community Initiatives Program and the Government of Canada for the New Horizons for Seniors Program. The grants received from these programs have allowed

us to price the both the reprint of the 1983 book and the new book at a very reasonable cost of $50 each.

Thank you to all of our Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors for their cash and in-kind contributions; the Village of Forestburg for the idea of a new history book, and for providing us with a startup loan and office space; and Corey Brennan of ELEVATE Design for his wonderful cover. David being a First World War Veteran, took advantage of a British Government offer to purchase some land for 12 pounds. Other income included selling eggs for 20 cents a dozen.

David again got called to serve in the Second World War. Six more Canadians were born in the family. David and Helen remained in Forestburg until their retirement.

100 years of archives tell the story of a community rich with spirit It is often said that the more things change, the more they stay the same. This couldn’t be more true when trying to capture the essence of Forestburg as a community.

The Community Press and its absorbed and now defunct properties (namely The Enterprise and The Alliance Times) have reported, published, and documented an entire century of the comings and goings of Forestburg and its residents.

In looking through these archives, and reflecting on how the world has changed in 100 years, it is most noteworthy to notice what hasn’t changed.

Here lies a proud community of neighbours, friends, multi-generational families, farmers, volunteers, merchants, labourers, church-goers, athletes, parents, students, and seniors.

There are new families and old families; new residents and old, learning to navigate the many decades and cultures between them while finding common ground.

New ideas are presented, sometimes resisted or fully rejected, but eventually embraced. A cautious bunch are we in small towns, but who could blame us?

People are there for each other in times of need, often as strangers or mere acquaintances. To live in a

small town community is an unspoken bond. It’s a link between worlds.

There are good times, there are hard times, but all seem to strive for simpler times.

Now, as 100 years ago, local merchants sponsor tournaments and school endeavours. Citizens participate in fundraisers - gathering money for a new roof for the community centre, or new dugouts for the ball diamonds.

We say goodbye to those who strive for things only the big city can deliver. We welcome those same people back when they’ve had enough, or to meet their new spouse, or to celebrate their new family.

We speculate on local real estate and root for quick possessions. We grumble that “half the damn town seems like it’s for sale,” and perhaps find little solace in knowing it was also the case many moons ago.

We cheer for local athletes, singers, entertainers to chase their dreams and extend their talents as far as they can possibly go.

We gossip at the coffee shops and wherever else people congregate. Sometimes the town gossip doesn’t quite get the story right, but God bless him or her for the hustle.

We still deposit our paycheques at the bank, we buy our goods at the hardware store, our food at the gro-

cery store, our insurance with the broker, our cars are fixed at the auto shops, our pets fixed at the vet, our hair cut by our hairdressers. You get the picture.

Yes, the world is changing. Sometimes faster than we can keep up. But this is how the very people who stood in your spot 100 years ago, 80 years ago, 50 years ago, even 10 years ago felt.

We are the same. People are the same. Small town folk are the same. We do our best, we take care of our families. Most of us are good. Most of us mean well.

There’s no reason to think 100 years from now, the same conversation isn’t to be had.

That is always the best part, for me anyway, of looking through the archives for these types of projects.

After a while, I feel like I know the people being reported on, or the people advertising, or the reporter, or the editor - many of whom are long dead. I relate to them because they relate to me.

When I walk into a business or event in Forestburg, I feel that same way. Forestburg’s community spirit is alive and well and it transcends decades and generations. For that, Forestburg deserves the centennial celebration of a lifetime.

Congratulations on the milestone, and thank you for all that you bring to our Flagstaff region.

Village of Forestburg to celebrate its 50th anniversary

1969 The Village of Forestburg will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its incorporation of a Village on Sunday and Monday, the 17th and 18th of August, 1969.

The Honourable A.O. Aalborg, Provincial Treasurer, will unveil a cairn to mark the event. Other activities on the weekend will be a pancake breakfast the same morning on Main Street. On Sunday afternoon there will be a parade and a community beef barbeque at the sports grounds, to which everyone is invited to bring their picnic dinner with barbequed beef being supplied at the grounds.

An eight team baseball tournament will take place, and there will be rides and other attractions. There

will be free swimming and free golf on Sunday and Monday.

Mayor Clarence Oberg welcomes all former residents of Forestburg to come back to the Village to help observe the anniversary. He has proclaimed a civic holiday on Monday, 18th of August.

The cairn is to be unveiled by Mr. Aalborg on the Sunday, besides marking the event, also commemorates the fact that Anthony Henday, the great explorer of the west, camped near the present townsite on October 4, 1754 on his trip west to seek trade with the Indians for the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Letter to the Editor: Forestburg is prospering despite lack of pavement 1969 Forestburg is a village that has a lot going for it. It has a strong agricultural community, backed by two large industries. And it has escaped the decline in rural population common in most areas of Canada.

The growth potential is good, with many attractive new buildings - and a record construction year is in sight.

There is just one problem. The community, located about 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, is not on a paved highway. In fact, Forestburg doesn’t have even a provincial highway - gravel or otherwise.

School fire nearly takes janitor’s life 1927 The origin of the fire which wiped out the Consolidated School building and contents shortly after midnight on February 4th, is a matter of surmise. The janitor, who slept in the basement of the building, had a narrow escape. When he awoke he made a fruitless attempt to subdue the flames, he then tried to get up the stairs to the door but was driven back by the flames. He finally, in a dazed condition, got to the High School room which was in the basement, and got out by smashing through one of the double windows.

He got a few cuts and bruises, having fallen a few times before he finally got out. He was barefooted and without a hat or coat and made his way across the road to the home of Mr. Willoughby where his injuries were attended to. In the meantime the fire had been noticed and a crowd soon gathered but nothing could be done. The roof fell in about 15 or 20 minutes after the Janitor got out. The value of the building and contents was well over $30,000 and there was $27,000 insurance. Mr. Savage, the principal, had a valuable library which was a total loss.

The insurance adjustors have not yet appeared on the scene. In the meantime, the Board have made agreements to carry on in the three church buildings and Sather’s Hall. Desks have been ordered and the largest part of them will arrive this week. Other supplies should be here by Monday so it is hoped to get going by the middle of next week.

Alberta gets new coal mine

1949 Alberta has a new open pit coal mining operation, with a potential output of 8,400 tons of domestic lump coal daily.

Forestburg Collieries, which recently acquired 1,800 acres in the Forestburg areas, about 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, has begun operations at the mine, a company official here states.

The company is investing $1.6 million in the ven-

ture, a large part of it for new equipment. All the equipment, including an all-steel tipple with an electric dragline, is expected to be at work on the property by the end of October.

The new mine is on acreage formerly operated as an underground operation. Drilling tests carried on during the past year have revealed good quality coal in thick seams, company states. Coal is sub-bituminous with 9,500-10,000 BTU content.

Forestburg miners haunted by ghosts?

1922 For the last year or more, miners and other people of Forestburg, near here, claim to have seen the ghost of a mine owner, named Turner.

Sometimes the apparition visits the miners while they were at work, and frequently Mrs. Eddall, the former wife of the late Mr. Turner, has encountered the “ghost” in and about the house.

On one occasion the entire gang of miners were driven away by the appearance of the ghost, it was

said yesterday.

But one man who lingered longest threw a pick at it, which made the ghost vanish with alacrity.

On another occasion the ghost is said to have chased Mrs. Eddall round the house with an axe.

The visitations of the spirit became so annoying that the Eddall family had to move to another dwelling, and scarcely anybody will venture into the mine, it is stated.

Forestburg another Hollywood?

1928 “Is Forestburg to become another Hollywood?” is the question heard at Forestburg by many this week.

It is plain, however, that the famous California city has not a monopoly on the natural scenery and choice lo-

cations for motion pictures.

Early part of this week camera men with full equipment and directors were at Forestburg taking pictures which will be used in the Fox News Series, appearing on silver screen in theatres in nearly every city and town on this continent.

$100,000 sub-station turned on this week

1971 - On Tuesday of this week, the above $100,000 sub-station of Canadian Utilities was turned on to complete a loop circuit emanating from the Battle River Plant at Forestburg.

Farm home destroyed by fire Nine-year-old Linda Moorhead heroically saves baby brother 1955 The farm home of Mr. and Mrs. R. Moorhead was completely destroyed by fire last Saturday night, March 26th.

Mr. and Mrs. Moorhead and the two boys were in town at the time, while nine-yearold Linda was at home with the baby. She noticed smoke coming from one of the furnace pipes, and endeavored to put out the fire, using the fire extinguisher and a pail of water.

When she saw that her efforts were of no avail, she wrapped the baby up in a blanket and carried him over three-quarters of a mile to the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Fink to seek help.

In the meantime, the fire had been noticed by M. Fossen who drove to town and gave the alarm, there being no telephones in the immediate neighborhood. But by the time the Fire Brigade and willing helpers arrived, the fire was beyond control,

and nothing could be saved.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the Moorhead family in their tragic loss. Many words of commendation and praise have been voiced for Linda in her pluck and presence of mind.

Thunder beat Provost to advance to BRHL final against Daysland

Carl Farvolden wins championship flight 1969 104 golfers took part in Forestburg’s tenth annual open golf tournament on the 15 of July. Carl Farvolden of the host club won the championship by beating Doug Cunningham of Camrose 3 and 1 in the final.

Winner of the championship consolation was Don Block of Daysland. Forest-

burg’s Stan Coutts won the first flight with John Leach of Camrose runner-up, and Neal Salt of Camrose consolation winner.

In spite of virtually perfect golfing conditions, the sporty nine hole course was not taken apart by any of the golfers although about 260 rounds were played during the day.

Local Woman Wins $10,000 1979 Mrs. Teenie Roth, of Forestburg is one of the lucky winners of the Winsday lottery. Her prize of $10,000.

Delegations from Forestburg ask for phone service 1918 Further telephone construction was asked by the delegation from Forestburg that waited on Premier Stewart Wednesday Morning. The district was represented by W.C. Banks, Chas Beebe, H. Fredericks, C.H. Dahls, P. Albreit, F.E. Mitchell, H. Farvolden, and H.W. Rogers. They were received by Premier Stewart and Hon. George P. Smith. They wanted both rural and long distance connection from Strome or from Heisler, to Forestburg, and the Premier after explaining to them the difficulties under which the department

and the government was working this year in regard to labor and materials, promised that he would do all possible to procure for them the long distance connection of which they were so much in need.

The delegation pressed home the argument that the settlement was especially badly off for doctors and that lives were being lost right along owing to the lack of facilities for quickly calling doctors from the nearby towns.

The men of the delegation were willing to promise the labor from their own community.

Progress update from Battle River Railway 2010 The Battle River Railway is a recently formed new generation Co-op that was set up to purchase the short line from Highway 56 east of Camrose to Alliance, Alta.

It grew out of an association called the Battle River Producer Car Group which, for the past six years, has been providing a producer car loading service along the branch line from Camrose to Alliance.

In the crop year 20082009, the Battle River Producer Car Group loaded 650 cars at the six sidings along the line.

In the fall of 2008, however, CN announced that it would no longer provide rail service to the group so we became a new generation co-op and offered to purchase the line.

President and spokesman, Ken Eshpeter, stated that, “Share sales

are going extremely well.

To date, the co-op has generated $2.8 million in share sales which is well on the way to its total target of $4.85 million.

“We still feel that we can reach $3.5 million in share sales with the remainder coming from loan proceeds.”

Eshpeter stated that the co-op was recently granted a six week extension by CN to allow it more time to canvas the entire community.

The Board of Directors of Battle River Railway has been extremely pleased with the general community support displayed for the project.

“When you think about it,” says Eshpeter, “the purchase of this branch line will accomplish many things.”

He says it will: 1) Provide a viable marketing alternative for farmers for local grain.

2) Be the start of a

resurgence in the economic viability of the four counties and six towns serviced by the line.

3) Be the start of a vibrant tourism service because of the picturesque landscape and unique shops, parks, and industries along the line.

There is still plenty of time to “get on board” so to speak, said Eshpeter.

“We have shares that suit everyone’s financial needs and capabilities.

The shares will be available for purchase until the end of February.”

After February, the opportunity to purchase more shares will occur for at least a year and possibly more.

“Now is the time to show your support for the line.

“If you are at all thinking about investing in the line, do so now and help us make this train project a reality.”

Residents treated to passenger train rides on the ‘Bullet 9000’

2010 Over the weekend, residents of Rosalind and Forestburg were treated to ride the rails of the Bullet 9000, a passenger train owned by the Alberta Railway Museum.

As part of the Battle River Rail’s celebration, the train stopped in Rosalind on Friday and made two runs that day.

Saturday the train left Forestburg at 10:15 a.m. bound for Alliance with 80 people on board. One

stop at Galahad Hotel for refreshments, then the tour carried on to Alliance.

Once there, the passengers were transported by Diane Dammann to the Alliance Sports Grounds for lunch. Barbequed burgers were served compliments of the Alliance Lions, and cream puffs compliments of the Alliance Hotel.

Mayor Muriel Fankhanel welcomed the visitors and spoke on the

importance of the railway.

The tour returned to Forestburg and then the next group boarded the train, only this time without refreshments.

Hearing the whistle blow brought back fond memories for many of the passengers.

“I once rode the train to Edmonton with my father,” commented one bystander. “We went up to the city to pick up a new truck.”

Forestburg woman lost in blizzard 1973 Miss Mickey Kiesal, aged 27 years, of Forestburg, became lost in a blizzard which swept across Central Alberta early Tuesday morning of this week.

Miss Kiesal who lives south of Forestburg was on her way to work at the Galahad Hospital at about 7:00 a.m.

At 10:00 a.m the RCMP at Forestburg were advised that she had not arrived at the Hospital, distance of about 7 to 8 miles away. It was at this time she was suspected to have become lost in the blinding storm of blowing snow.

Five Snow Plows were dispatched in the area to search for her, one from Forestburg Collieries, two from the County of Flagstaff and two from the Dept. of Highways at Killam.

Many more people volunteered to join in the search with snow vehicles, tractors, farm trucks, and cars.

During this time of the search no trace of her was found. It was estimated that about 70 people in all were involved in the search.

At approximately 5:30 p.m that afternoon she walked into the Village of Galahad from her stalled car.

She had no idea of her whereabouts, was very cold and completely black.

It was later learned that she had turned off the road too soon before reaching old highway 36 and drove a distance of about 1 mile in a field and be-

came stuck. She remained in her car and at about 10:00 a.m the motor quit.

After this she still remained in the car at which time was getting quite cold so she tore up parts of the seats and lit a fire inside the car.

It was the result of the fire where she became black from head to toe.

Late that afternoon it was between wind gusts that she saw lights for the first time and decided to leave the car to strike out in that direction.

Her location was about 1/8 mile from the farm home of Art

Ponto about 1/4 mile from Galahad. The visibility during the entire search was nil and there was an indication that a snow vehicle came within 10 ft. of her stalled car and did not see it.

Members of the RCMP at Forestburg are very grateful to all those who volunteered their time and equipment in the search and also to the St. Joseph’s Hospital who served coffee and meals to the searchers throughout the day.

At last report Miss Kiesal is resting quite comfortably in the St. Joseph’s Hospital at Galahad.

Forestburg plans street face-lifting project 1976 Once again Council reminds everyone that a building permit from the Village is required for all alterations, renovations, etc. to a building, before construction takes place.

CURB & GUTTER A certain amount of curb and gutter work will be undertaken in the next few weeks to improve the drainage of the Village. For this reason, in some of the newer residential areas, black earth for

the boulevards will not be placed until after the curb and gutter work.

STREETS The oiling program for the streets is not quite yet complete for 1976 and if the weather is favourable it will completed as soon as possible. The possibility of a traffic pedestrian light from the subdivision, at a pedestrian crossing, is being considered by Council, in order to ensure a safe school crossing for children when school begins.

Forestburg Theatre readying for summer 1928 Next week will mark the commencement of the summer season of motion pictures.

Commencing next week, there will be two complete programs a week and each program will be shown twice on each night- Tuesdays and Fridays- programs running from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Some of the choicest pictures have been booked for Tuesdays and Fridays during 1975 May. To give the best of service, there has been installed some new equipment including an additional machine.

Forestburg Arena clear Of debt 1958 The Forestburg Memorial Arena is clear of debt.

Built in 1955 at a cost of over $20,000, largely by volunteer labour, the arena has had about 135,000 bushels of wheat in it since, stored there by the Alberta Wheat Pool.

The proceeds from this have been entirely used to reduce the debt and the July payment of 1958 put the Association formed to operate the arena in the clear.

From now on the income will be used to build up a fund to install a waiting room, wire and plumb the arena and to install a heating system.

All of this will cost an additional $12,000. Officials are hoping that the wheat will remain until this sum is in hand, which will take about two years.

The Associations has been registered as a non-profit organization to operate and finance the building.

New Forestburg Arena finished, weekend tours offered 2011 The Forestburg MultiUse building is now complete, and is the envy of all visitors, as local residents had the opportunity on Sunday for all to tour the new building.

From the shiny new kitchen, to the many viewing areas, including a second floor balcony complete with stands and safety netting, the new multi-use building is a testament to the hard work and dedication of village residents to see the project through.

The village hosted a free beef-on-a-bun dinner to area residents as

they toured the building Sunday afternoon in conjunction with the All for S.T.A.R.S. dedication ceremony.

The new facility boasts an elevator for second floor handicapped access, a large, brightly lit foyer with a concession area and large public washrooms, a second-floor multi-purpose meeting room complete with windows overlooking both the ice-surface and outside, new stands with wooden seats and backrests, safety netting surrounding the ice surface, and shiny new dressing rooms complete with showers.

Breaking ground for the new Forestburg multi-use arena 2010 In the cold, wind, and intermittent rain last Friday afternoon, Apr. 23, a small crowd gathered to watch Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit have the honour of breaking ground for the new Forestburg arena and multi-use facility.

Mayor Bob Coutts welcomed everyone who braved the weather to watch the event, which has been a long time coming for the Forestburg community. Coutts, filling in for the Building Committee Chairman who was unable to attend due to work obligations, let everyone know that the building has been ordered and the building erection, ice plant, boards, glass, lowe ceiling, dehumidification system, concrete ice slab, perimetre floor, and building contracts have all be awarded.

“Site preparation and excavation work will commence shortly, with foundation work to follow. Building materials will begin arriving in late May, followed closely by the ice plant systems in June,” stated Coutts.

Coutts introduced many members of the commu-

nity who helped through fundraising and time spent to finally have the realization of the new arena, a project that has been in the works for many years.

Councillor Peter Miller read greetings from Battle River - Wainwright MLA Doug Griffiths.

“The Village of Forestburg is renowned for its dedication to recreation and community. The Forestburg Multi-Use Facility will enhance the lives of all citizens who utilize this facility and continue to foster the strong sense of community that has existed here for decades.

“Let’s not forget to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers for their hard work and dedication for making this adventure a true reality.”

As he came up to turn ground Benoit said that he found it fitting that the sod turning was taking place during Volunteer Week, since so many volunteers put countless hours into this project.

The crowd applauded as Benoit stuck the shovel in the soil, and Coutts told them to keep their eyes open for development on the project to take place soon.

2004 - Killam/Forestburg RCMP Constables Allan Mayer, Lucas Percy, Jay Rasmussen, Rod Carleton, and Sandy McKechnie saluted and shook hands with Sergeant Dwaine Skappak at 5 p.m. last Friday. It was the retired sergeant’s last day of work after over 29 years on the police force.

Feed Mill and Egg Grading Station opening slated for Jan 23 1958 The official opening of the new Forestburg Feed Service and Forestburg Produce, will take place on Thursday, January 23rd, with an open house at the mill and egg grading station during the afternoon, and a feeder meeting in the school auditorium at night. The feed mill and egg grading station are owned by Mr. J.D. Gowanlock and Mr. J. Forster, respectively, and will be operated jointly by Mr. Forster.

The egg grading in the station will be done by Mrs. Florence Adams.

The feed mill and produce station will be open from 12 noon to 6 p.m for district farmers to come in and inspect the mod-

ern new facilities. Tours of the mill from driveway to top floor will be conducted, and all phases of preparing balanced livestock rations in the mill will be explained by field representatives of Canada Packers Feed Division. Meanwhile, at the produce station, qualified men will be on hand to outline the procedure receiving, grading and shipping of eggs.

The installation of modern, high capacity equipment in this mill makes it possible to offer to district farmers a custom feed grinding rolling and mixing service which is unexcelled in the province. The machinery consists of a platform scale and electric hoist in

the driveway, a 24-inch plate attrition mill capable of 5 tons fine grinding per hour, and a 16-inch by 24-inch grain roller turning out 4 1/2 - 6 tons of cattle feed per hour. A one-ton feed mixer throughly mixes the added amount of livestock feed supplements with the rolled or ground grain in approximately five minutes, and a hopper scale facilitates the accurate weighing of grain in the preparation of complete formula feeds, such as chick starters and creep rations for pigs. A full line of Shur-Gain livestock feed concentrates in the warehouse assures a steady supply of feeds available at all times.

Mr. Gowanlock and Mr. Forster are pleased to offer the services of their

modern facilities to all district farmers, and are looking forward to seeing

them on opening day, and serving them in the future.

Forestburg’s Devonian Park dedicated

1979 At 3:30 p.m., the dignitaries and special guests gathered at the bandshell at the Devonian Park where the dignitaries were introduced and welcomed. As well as Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. Steinhauer, introductions included M.P. Arnold Malone, M.L.A. Gordon Stromberg Glen Miller, representing the county of Flagstaff, former mayor Lloyd Anderson, who was presented with a gift, another former mayor, H. Meekle who replied for the mayors. Mrs. Gladys Jones was introduced, who, along with M.C. Carl Farvolden, were the only two people who had been in Forestburg since its start.

A presentation was made to Mayor D.R. Bowersock of a picture of the new Drop-In Centre,

by Mr. Chapman of Alberta Power, in recognition of the years Alberta Power has been in the community. The picture was the work of Meridith Evans, and has been especially commissioned

by Alberta Power.

“It’s a Small World” and “This Land is Ours”, was sung by a children’s chorus under the direction of Arnold Jacobsen,

and conducted by Kathy Kruger, was most enjoyable.

Mr. Stan Coutts, chairman of The Main Street Alberta committee was introduced.

He is turn mentioned the many people who helped to complete the park in which the bandshell was situated, in particular, Mrs. Anderson and Jim Gowanlock. The park is very nice, trees having been brought in, and an old coal car as a featured exhibit.

Lieutenant Governor Steinhauer was then introduced. He remarked on how pleased he was to

be invited to an event such as this. He mentioned the determination of our forefathers in making a new way of life.

He said Canada is blessed with fine people, with determination to show the world what can

be done. He went on to say that everyone should be proud of their accomplishments and should be proud of their neighbours.

Coal fired power plant planned near Forestburg 1954 Mr. J.C. Dale, General Manager of Canadian Utilities Limited, has announced plans for a new multimillion dollar power plant near Forestburg.

Preliminary work is now underway and actual construction will start in the spring of 1955. The firm of Haddin, Davis and Brown has been retained as consulting engineers.

Initial construction at a cost of over five million dollars will consist of an earth-filled dam, the plant building, and the installation of a generating unit capable of 40,000 horsepower output. Pro vision will be made for the addition of two more units of the same capacity as the original, giving a final maximum output of 120,000 h.p. These additional generators will be installed individually as they are required for increased production.

In discussing his company’s plans, Mr. Dale stated that the operation of the new project did not mean that

Canadian Utilities planned to shut down any existing plants. These will continue to operate with Forestburg providing the additional power required by Alberta’s ever-expanding economy.

Mr. Dale’s announcement brought forth some information which will be welcomed by Alberta’s coal interests. The fuel to be used will be supplied by two local coal producers, Forestburg Colleries and The Battle River Coal Company. It is expected that when the plant opens, early in 1957, coal consumption will run to about 100,000 tons per year. This will go up to 200,000 tons when the second unit is installed and 300,000 tons when the third and final unit begins to operate.

Another point of interest is the fact that the construction of the dam will cause the formation of a large, extremely pretty lake. It will be half a mile wide by ten miles long, and will contain several picturesque wooded islands. The water, which is used to condense

exhaust steam from the turbines, (distilled water is used in the boilers) will be quite warm for bathing, and will be stocked with game fish. It is expected that the area will make an exceptionally fine park or summer resort.

In addition to the initial cost of five million as mentioned above, a farther expenditure of more than one and a half million will be required. This money will be spent on two transmission lines- one from Forestburg to Vermillion, the other from Forestburg to Halkirk. These lines will carry 69,000 volts. With provision being made for raising the voltage to 132,000 if required in the future. Through these connections the power will be available to either end of the interconnecting systems at any time. It will also be available to the Grid System, under which the various power companies in the province are able to supply current to one another in times of crisis.

Since this picture was taken, the face of the spillway has been completed, and the 1,800-foot dam covered with rock protection. Some idea of the size of the dam can be obtained by comparing the sizes of the cars and trucks parked on it.

The Battle River plant will be generating power in 1956. As the weather can have a great effect on the speed of construction, no definite date has been set.

Alfred and Alida Sather and family, about 1915 while still on their homestead SE 6-42-15-W4. About a year later they moved into what is now Forestburg where Alfred built a hardware store. He also had the Cockshutt dealership. Alida began her Millinery Shop in the same building. The children: Clifford – married Ruth Anderson, a Forestburg school teacher they moved to Portland Oregon; Charlotte (Lottie) married Albert Weymouth, a local carpenter; Alice married John Evans, they farmed west of Forestburg; and Gladys married David Jones, they lived most of their married years in Forestburg.

Forestburg beautifying and preserving village 2003 The Forestburg Communities in Bloom committee is not only beautifying the village, but they are now preserving its heritage.

Six signs were recently erected throughout Forestburg to mark historical points of interest.

“It’s important to make notice of these sites,” said committee member Monica Northey, “while the older generation with the information is still here.”

The site of the former railway station says it was launched in 1916 by the CNR. “Awaiting the Friday Night Passenger train from Edmonton was a social event where the townsfolk gathered to visit. The men played horseshoes and the children played softball in the station yard and driveway. Folks were often entertained in the station living room, listening to the gramophone, or gathering around the piano for a sing song.”

The Club Cafe, now the Harvest Garden Restaurant, was opened in 1925 by Wong Shing and his father Mah Hong Lim who was one of the first Chinese to settle in Forestburg in 1920. “The Wongs provided not only western and oriental cuisine for the next seven decades, but a gathering place for the whole community.”

The Hamilton house was built in 1921 for lawyer C.J. Smyth. The house’s namesake comes from the third owner R.G. (Buzz) Hamilton who with his wife Inga (Oberg) purchased the home in 1950.

The Anderson house was built in 1919 by N.K. Lund and after a few owners was purchased by Lloyd and Marguerite (Coutts) in 1959. Jim Anderson, son of Lloyd and Marguerite, purchased the home in 1993.

“The house was wired and plumbed when it was built, which was rather unusual at that time. This handsome home was one of the first built along main street.”

The Country Kitchen was one of the early homes built in 1926. It also housed the telephone office and post office.

After a few other businesses it was purchased in 1986 by Charlie and Liz Marchand for their hairstyling and cafe business.

The ATB Financial building has been recognized as the former site of the original hardware store.

These locations will be part of a walking tour in August, coinciding with the yard competition.

The total project cost $3,300. The committee raised their portion through private and business sponsorship and the rest came from a grant application in 2001 to the former Community Lottery Board.

More designations and signs are in the works for another six locations.

The local historical society designated locations of historical significance and assisted with the write ups.

The signs were made in Mirror at the Alberta Foundry. They are black and silver made from aluminum to match the decorative lamp posts in the downtown area.

Outdoor swimming pool on time 2001 The new Forestburg Outdoor Swimming Pool is on time and on budget.

Construction which started in June under the guidance of Marlit Contractors and Western Recreation will include a beach entrance teach pool with an umbrella waterfall, bubble jets, and slide.

The main pool which joins with the

beach entrance pool, will include a rope swing, diving board, jungle slide, and adjacent large hot tub.

Fundraising efforts for the pool have been very successful and the committee is now selling sponsor bricks which will be a feature wall in the building.

The pool is scheduled to open to the public in May of 2002.

12-year old girl saves family 1954 A cool headed 12-year-old girl was credited with saving the lives of four younger brothers and sisters when fire destroyed their parent’s farm home in this district 90 miles southwest of Edmonton.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kroetch were away from home on business when the fire developed. Evelyn, 12, awakened the four youngsters, ranging in age from two to eight, bundled them into a tractor and drove them more than a mile to neighbours. None was harmed.

Project 2000 hosts last auction before new millennium 1999 The Forestburg Project 2000 committee held its third “Pooling our Resources” fundraising auction on November 6, at the Forestburg Community Hall, raising over $20,000 in cash, with 210 people attending the event and 300 items up for bid.

“We’d like to walk out here tonight with $20,000 to $25,000”, said Committee chairman Blaise Young. “The goal is to raise $500,000 by April 1, 2000. While many have said it can't be done in five years, our most recent financial statement shows that we have surpassed the $400,000 mark with pledges and money raised”, he said. "The total amount required to build the indoor swimming pool is $743,000," says Young.

“Recently, we’ve had a few disappointments,” he said. They applied for $200,000 funding from the federal governments a millennium project, but the government sent the committee a letter stating that, because the indoor swimming pool falls under infra-structure they don’t qualify for the money, according to Young.

Local MP Jack Ramsay, intervened on their behalf, but to no avail. MLA Butch Fischer, said they may qualify for. provincial government grant of $125,000. "We hope to receive a sizeable grant from the provincial government," said Young.

However, the project 2000 committee is proud of where they are in regards to fundraising and remain optimistic, despite the setbacks.

“Our present (outdoor) pool is shot and possibly wont run next year because its losing water. Its been winterized and we’ll go into next spring for as long as we can," he said.

Everything raised at Saturday’s auction went straight into the Project 2000 fund. Community caterers donated their services for the evenings meal, worth about $7000.

Calvin Herder of Rosalind donated his auctioning services. This was the third time he has auctioneered for them.

The Forestburg Lions Club volunteered to operate the bar and the hall was donated.

“So there was zero overhead for tonight,” said Young.

He also acknowledged the Atco employee’s donation of $2000, which came from their cashed in pop cans. The Stiff Competitors slow-pitch team donated $500 that they raised during their Halloween dance last week and the Forestburg competitive swim club donated $4000 for new pool equipment.

There were over 70 live items to be auctioned . The first item was a set of Wilson ladies’ golf clubs donated by the Forestburg Golf Club.

“Get your hands in the air… it only costs you money if its the last one up,” said Herder. “You never just bid once at an auction, that’s the hardest thing you can do to as an auctioneer,” he says.

Randy Martz bought the clubs for $310.

Some other items auctioned included the first official length of the pool with media coverage that went to Marsha Fuller for $100, a Project 2000 pool party for 20 people with steaks and refreshments went to the Stiff Competitors team for $460.

“Ma’am. there’s no friends at an auction… any movement above the waist is dangerous,” cautioned Herder.

One of the most unusual items up for grabs was a cesarean-section by the veterinarian, which went to Jim Brennan for $240.

The highlight of the evening was the Bear Trap Lodge guided fishing trip for two, including accommodation and meals, which was donated by Dennis Busch and Ken Bosh. Ivor Nash took the trip for $640.

The enormous array of silent auction items were set up on three tables running the length of the hall. Guests recorded their bids on a list and successful bidder was highlighted. Committee members worked on organizing this.

Galahad wins in OT Forestburg Flyers are back, win home-opener 1922 In one of he hardest games ever played on local ice, the Pride of Forestburg were forced to accept defeat at the handle of the locals after 30 minutes overtime, the score being 9 to 8.

Forestburg took the lead early in the first period and ran in three goals in succession.

Strachen scored for the home team by a good end to end rush and the period ended with the score 3 to 1 for the visitors. In the second, the Galahad team had an edge on the play.

Forestburg scored three to their two, but then the next interval being 6 to 8 for Forestburg.

In the third frame the home club hit their true form and at the end of 60 minutes play the scores stood 6 to 6. In each of the first two ten-minute overtime periods both teams scored but in the third Galahad got the winning goal. Galahad had played twelve games and lost two.

Flyers hockey notes

3-1 in front of over 350 in attendance

2013 The Forestburg Flyers are back and made the most of the huge hometown support in their season opener as they played to a 3-1 victory over the Irma Aces at the Forestburg arena Friday, Nov. 1.

A crowd of 350 fans came to watch the teams play hockey.

The Flyers joined the East Central Senior Hockey League this year, bringing senior hockey back to Forestburg.

Friday’s fans saw the Flyers outshoot the Aces 4233.

Irma opened the scoring early in the first period with a power-play goal by Kyle Parsons, assisted by Jesse Gulbraa.

The Flyers tied it up a few minutes later with a goal

by Brandon Dergenstein, assisted by Blaine Strauss.

Brian Wegenast set up Nolan Shepherd midway through the second period when the Flyers took the

lead 2-1.

Near the end of the second, Jody Heck capitalized on a turnover by an Irma defenseman to score unassisted, taking the Flyers to a 3-1 lead.

The Flyers sustained injuries toward the end of the second period, with goaltender Jeremy Klapak injuring his groin and Nick McNabb taking a puck to the face.

McNabb finished the game before receiving stitches for a cut lip at the hospital.

Bobby McNabb stepped in to tend the Flyer net in the third period, and came up big with a huge save on an Irma breakaway as he faced his first shot on goal for the Flyers.

He kept the 3-1 lead intact until the buzzer blew to end the third.

The Flyers next game is Friday, Nov. 8 in Hanna and they play Coronation, Friday, Nov. 15 at the Forestburg Arena.

1946 The Forestburg Flyers played their first league game at Strome on Tuesday night, December 10th. After three hard-played periods, the score came to 1-1. Due to the stormy weather which came up suddenly, the game got called with no overtime.

Douglas Berg scored Forestburg’s lone goal, with an assist from Stan Coutts.

Forestburg intends to play two games weekly, one away and one home game if possible. The other towns in the league games are Camrose, Daysland, Heisler and Strome.

Flyers lead in Big-Six Hockey League 1955 In the Big-Six Hockey League in which the teams are Forestburg, Heisler, Rosalind, and Strome, the Forestburg Flyers are leading with a total of six points for three successive wins. Sedgewick, orignally signed up with the league, has dropped out of the league.

On Sunday last, an exhibition game was played at Forestburg between Heisler and Forestburg, the latter team winning by a score of 9-1. Koda, Litke, and Birdsnell scored majority of goals for Forestburg. The large turn-out at the game was very gratifying to the Hockey Club.

Forestburg wins juvenile tournament over Sedgewick 1967 Sedgewick- The Forestburg Juveniles won the hockey tournament at Sedgewick on Sunday, defeating the Sedgewick Sabres in the final by a score of 32.

Five teams in the league were in competition, representing Hughenden, Sedgewick, Killam, Forestburg and Viking with the Daysland team not entered.

The tournament was sponsored by BJHL so the coaches could take a look at all the players and pick an all-star team to enter the Provincial Playoffs. The

coaches met just before the final game and chose their team, but the names are not available at press time.

In the first game Sedgewick played Hughenden, winning by a score of 4 to 3. At 1:00 Killam and Forestburg met in the second game, with Forestburg winning by another 4-3 score. Viking got the bye in the first round and Forestburg in the second round, so Sedgewick played Viking in the semi-final and won 3-2 with overtime.

The final game of the tourney was between Forestburg and Sedgewick with Forestburg winning 3-2.

Forestburg Lions to host cash draw, steak Kindergarten starts supper, and silent and live auction in April

1976 The organizational meeting of the Forestburg Kindergarten Association was held on September 15th at 8:00 p.m. in the elementary school with 28 parents present. A good business session was conducted.

This year's kindergarten enrolment presently is 27 students. Our teachers for the year are Mrs. Dianne Jahns and Mrs. Judy London.

The Steak Supper and Cash Draw will be held at the new community centre on June 24. A total of $7,000 will be given away as prizes during the evening dinner.

Forestburg Class Reunion ‘76 1976 On Sunday, July 4th, members of the Forestburg class of 1966 gathered to hold a ten year reunion.

Invitations were sent to all students who had been a member of the class, which had started school in Forestburg in 1954 and finished in 1966.

At two o’clock, about 80 adults and children gathered at the Forestburg Town and Country Centre to renew old acquaintances. Gerry Oberg, acting as master of ceremonies, welcomed all the former students and their families.

Following this, each student introduced his or her family and gave a short history of what had taken place in their lives during the past 10 years. This led to several students recalling humorous situations

that had happened during school.

After a barbeque supper, the group gathered to have their pictures taken. It was decided to hold a reunion again.

Tragic farm accident 1930 Barbara Maud, the three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bish, died Friday afternoon at the Galahad hospital where she had been hurriedly taken after having her legs broken and has suffered other injuries in the combine elevator while in operation.

The dear little girl, in company with her twin brother, and twin cousins about the same age, were standing on top of five of six feet of wheat in the grain tank on the combine. Although the children were guarded very closely, Barbara suddenly slipped and with the suction was quickly drawn to the bottom and side of the tank and into the elevator box before her disappearance was discovered. The grief stricken father and uncle, who were working on the combine, rushed the unfortunate child to Galahad hospital where she died about two hours later.

Building boom for business as village grows 1927 If the growth of a village is any criterion of the surrounding district, then the Forestburg district is not to be overlooked.

At present there are many new business buildings, also residences, under construction and undergoing extensive alteration. There are also several others under consideration.

The present activities areThe new hall, being built by W.E. Voss, on the east side of Main Street, opposite his present store building. This is a one storey building, 36x80 feet, with a stage at the rear, full width of building. The ceiling is 12ft. This building will be used as a dance hall, a pic-

ture show house and for other entertainments.

Harry Hardin, our local druggist, has just completed a new building, 22x48 ft., just south of the hospital, and expects to move his drug stock and soda fountain to his new quarters next week.

B.L. Thornton is excavating the next lot north of the Willoughby & Thornton store, and will erect a new building there, which will, so we understand, be occupied as a restaurant.

P. Albright is erecting an office building, 24x30ft., just south of the Bank of Montreal property.

H.L. Williams is putting a full basement under his residence on second avenue.

Mrs. Allen, Nels Haldberg and P. Albright are

among those who intend erecting new homes in Forestburg this season.

Of considerable importance the new addition to the Forestburg Hotel, which Mr. Svenson, the proprietor, proposes erecting at once. Excavation is now being made. This is to be a two storey structure at the south side of the present building, and will be 36x45 ft. A dining room will be provided on the ground floor, and the second floor will be arranged as a parlour and living rooms. The providing of a dining room at this hotel will be greatly appreciated by the people of Forestburg as well as the travelling public.

Arrangements are underway for erecting a new Masonic Hall in Forestburg.

Inaugural ‘Mud Bog in the ‘Burg’ a dream come true for organizer 2008 “I have dreamed about this for years,” admitted Forestburg’s Greg Lemay, “and it is finally happening.”

Forestburg Community Development, Many Horses Saloon, and Forestburg Agencies hosted the first annual “Mud Bog in the ‘Burg” in conjunction with Forestburg Sports Day on Saturday, May 31.

There were 47 die hard riders registered from as far as way as Whitecourt plus Edmonton, Leduc, Wetaskiwin, Carvel, Spruce Grove, and Ponoka, plus locals all ready to compete in the ATV mud pit racing events.

The Classes were: Class 1: The Mini Mod Bog and featured youth racers aged 12 and younger; Class 2: 250cc-400cc; Class 3: 401cc-500cc; Class 4 : 501cc-600cc; Class 5: 601cc700cc; Class 6: 701cc-800cc; Class 7: 801cc and up; Class 8: 600cc-950 twins; Class 9: 250cc-400cc 2 wheel drive; Class 10: 401cc-up 2 wheel drive; Class 11: Modified; Class 12: RSV Side by Sides.

The racing was conducted with a double wrist band method. Each racer started with two wrist bands, and after two losses, they were eliminated.

The well-organized crew had set up the event with bleachers for the fans plus a tent for registration and had the ambulance on site.

The Forestburg Fire Department sprayed the “bog” with water as it was needed.

There was pit staff ready to help rollovers and a tow truck for disabled or stuck bikes.

The bikes entered the pit at full speed and the muck sprayed in all directions, much to the delight of the fans.

The races were fast and the crowd was getting bigger as the races continued.

Local racer Michelle Hebert was the only female contender, and when she raced, the cheering section

got behind her and cheered the loudest for her.

“This is the greatest,” said one racer, while another admitted, “I have never been to a mud bog race, but I’ll be back and I’ll make sure I tell all of my friends about it too.”

Father and son combo, Duncan and Nigel Friesen from Ponoka, compete in bike events all summer long.

“We got some things already planned for next year,” grinned Lemay,” we’ve created a monster and it’s going to get bigger and better every year.”

For a first time event, the “Mud Bog in the ‘Burg” could be called an unqualified success, and the only disappointing part is that it won’t happen again for a full year!
