Hobbyists fly their crafts east of Viking for another successful ‘Fire and Ice’ event Patricia Harcourt Editor

Rocket launch lovers gathered east of Viking Saturday, Feb. 22, for a Fire and Ice 2025 High Power Rocket Launch.

The day-long event featured almost perfect weather for the launching of rockets, which was hosted by the Edmonton Rocketry Club.

Club member and local area resident Dale Madu has brought the rockets to this location off Township Road 480 for the past few years. Club members share an obvious enthusiasm and love for their hobby which combines the genuine excitement of rocket launches and the technical skill to build the rockets themselves All day the members set up their rockets and excitedly waited for the signal to “go.” Both large and smaller ones (from rocket motors sized L-M) were all cheered as they took off with fire and smoke from their launch pads - this was the true highlight for those

participating and the people who also came just to watch or film the experience.

Fellow rocket club members also had fun wishing their local host happy birthday which fell on the following day.

Good weather is a requirement for this type of event, so it was postponed from the previous Saturday due to frigid temperatures. However, seven days later the intense cold was gone and the skies were a mix of sun and cloud. This made for a ceiling of 10,000 feet above ground level for excellent viewing as the rockets flew up and then slowly landed on the fields near Thomas Lake.

The day was so balmy many people brought their dogs and others went for walks and even did some snow skiing.

The organizers are hoping to entice local residents to come out and see what happens at this event, which is family friendly and definitely throws out the welcome mat for visitors.

150 students attend Rural Youth Career Fair Patricia Harcourt Editor

Viking’s first ever Rural Youth Career Fair is being hailed as a big success, especially if the response from local students is the measurement.

The fair began at the school with master of ceremonies Luke Brooke introducing Mayor James Buttner who welcomed everyone to the event. This was followed by keynote speaker, Dr. Bill Sevcik, who grew up in Viking and attended Viking School. He has since become the Clinical Department Facility Chief at the University of Alberta’s emergency department.

He shared his personal story of starting out as a small town student to be-

coming a leader in the medical field, and offered tips and advice to help others achieve their goals in life.

After the addresses, students broke into groups for break-out sessions in different classrooms. They were able to hear from other local speakers and ask questions while obtaining more information on different career pathways.

Sessions included career themes of working with your hands, working with plants and animals, building your own business and financing, a career caring for others and community wellness.

Following the sessions, the students and organizers were offered lunch at the community hall, where a second part of the fair was held.

Students streamed around the hall speaking to people who provided information on many different kinds of careers, some educational and others very practical in nature.

Viking/Beaver Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) organized this school related event with help from the Town of Viking.

For added fun, there were raffle draws at the end of the event.

“I think the day went really well!,” said FCSS Director Dawn Chrystian. “I

hope students came away with increased awareness of the opportunities available to them right in their own communities, and know that they can choose to live rurally and still be successful in their chosen career path.”

She added: “I was just looking through our outcomes survey, and 100% of the students who responded identified that as a result of attending the career fair, they know more about rural career opportunities.

Outstanding warrants for impaired man Barb Chrystian 780-385-0631

On February 17, police received a call for assistance from a male who was experiencing mental health issues. Police attended and spoke with the male who advised he was now feeling better.

Police made a referral to the Regional Police and Crisis Team (RPACT) for follow up with the individual.

On February 18, a citizen attended the detachment to advise he had been the victim of a fraud. He reported he had provided his credit card information to an individual in order to access a website for financial trading. When he attempted to access the website, he learned it was not legitimate and he had been defrauded out of a sum of money.

He notified his credit card company and his bank. Police would like to remind the public not to give out personal or banking information to sources that cannot be positively identified or verified.

That afternoon, police received a report of a vehicle stuck in the ditch south of Viking. Police attended and spoke with the owner who advised his wife had been driving and she was unable to stop at the intersection of Highways 36 and 26 and entered the ditch.

He had sustained minor injuries but refused any medical treatment from EMS. Police stayed on scene until the vehicle was towed out of the ditch.

On February 19, police learned a male from Viking failed to attend court in Vegreville for a traffic trial and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

An additional charge for failing to attend court is pending and the warrants will be executed when the person in question is located.

On February 20, police received a report of a break and enter and theft at a business in Viking.

Police have no suspects at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

That afternoon, police received a complaint of mischief and theft at a vacant property in Viking. Police are continuing to investigate this incident.

On February 21, police received a complaint of a vehicle westbound on Highway 14 driving in excess of the speed limit.

Police were not in a position to intercept the vehicle in question so the information was passed on to Tofield RCMP. That evening, police received a complaint of a male causing a disturbance at the hospital.

Police attended and spoke with the male who had since calmed down.

He was provided a courtesy ride to his residence. A few hours later, police were called back to his residence by family members as the male was again agitated and acting irrationally. Police attended and spoke with the male. He was apprehended and transported to a health facility for treatment.

That night, police received a report of a vehicle in the ditch east of Viking. Police located the vehicle in question along with three males and one female. The driver of the vehicle was identified and police learned he had an out-

standing warrant out of Strathmore, AB so he was placed under arrest.

He also was showing signs of intoxication so was asked to provide breath samples on the Approved Screening Device (ASD) and did so, registering a “Fail.” He was then also arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. Police proceeded by way of Provincial Sanctions, which resulted in the immediate suspension of his driver’s license as well as a fine and the seizure of his vehicle for 30 days. The male was then transported to Killam Detachment where he was lodged in cells for a Judicial Interim Release hearing in regards to the outstanding warrant. He was released the next day and will be appearing in Drumheller Provincial Court in March to answer to his charges out of Strathmore.

On February 23, police received a request to conduct a well-being check on a male in Kinsella who had not been seen around for awhile. Police attended his residence and confirmed he was fine. The complainant was updated.

Alberta RCMP warn public about the serious crime of ‘swatting’ Alberta RCMP are raising awareness regarding a concerning issue of false reports to police.

Recently, RCMP detachments have received several fabricated calls reporting false emergencies. This dangerous practice is sometimes known as ‘swatting’, and involves the caller falsely reporting a violent crime, such as a hostage situation or active shooter, to trigger an immediate and highrisk police response. The term ‘swatting’ is in reference to a police response that may require a ‘swat team.’

These false reports are greatly concerning, and can lead to unnecessary evacuations and property damage. They also lead

police to respond urgently, creating unnecessary risks and wasting critical resources.

The act of ‘swatting’ is criminal and there are serious consequences.

Those responsible can be charged with crimes ranging from public mis-

chief to more serious offences, such as criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death. These charges reflect the extreme risk that ‘swatting’ poses to communities. Every swatting incident diverts valuable emergency resources

away from genuine crises, potentially endangering the lives of first responders, bystanders, the intended victim, and the community as a whole. Swatting is not a prank or a meme, it is a criminal act with severe legal consequences.

Guest Editorial: Why won't Ottawa shop Canadian? shoving its failed policy into the face of consumers, you’d think it would use Canadian companies to do so, especially right now.

The federal government has been addicted to social media advertising for years, spending more than $53 million on social from 2019 to 2023. That is about 20 per cent of its entire ad budget, compared to less than two per cent for print media in the last fiscal year.

It took Meta’s draconian decision to pull news from the feeds of Canadian users in the summer of 2023 for Ottawa to suspend its spending with Meta. Better late than never, we suppose.

But to turn the tap back on, with Meta still at open war with Canadian media? In the midst of an impending trade war with the United States?

When its CEO is openly sucking up to the man who launched that trade war and making its platform even more open to disinformation by turning off fact-checking? It's not just nonsensical, it's hypocritical.

Amid all the calls to shop Canadian in the wake of threatened U.S. tariffs in the past two weeks, including an impassioned plea from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, you’d expect the federal government to be the last organization to be buying American products when Canadian ones are available.

But that’s exactly what they’re doing when it comes to advertising.

CTV News revealed last week that the Privy Council Office — basically, the central agency of the federal government, which reports directly to the Prime Minister — allocated up to $100,000 in advertising on Facebook and Instagram to pitch the government’s GST holiday campaign to Canadian consumers.

This ill-informed tax break has had next to no impact on the Canadian economy — if anything, it has been more of a pain for retailers to implement than a benefit to them — and should have been allowed to die a quiet death.

But if the government insists on

But the federal government has thousands of choices to reach citizens with its messages: local media outlets.

And citizens want to see those messages in their local media.

According to a new survey just published by Totum Research, 65 per cent of Canadians want the federal government to commit a percentage of its advertising budget to Canadian news media.

And it’s not just because they’re Canadian; it’s because they trust the ads they see there.

According to the survey, 63 per cent of Canadians trust advertising in newspapers and their online platforms, while just 28 per cent trust ads they see on Facebook/Instagram.

More than half of those surveyed (58 per cent) said newspapers and news sites are their preferred medium to receive information about federal government programs and initiatives, while only 17 per cent chose Face-

book/Instagram.

“The Government of Canada’s decision to resume advertising with Meta is a real kick in the shins to independent publishers across Canada,” said Dave Adsett, publisher of the Wellington Advertiser and chair of News Media Canada. “Disinformation travels faster than the truth, and it sends the wrong signal to local advertisers when the government is rewarding a company that is unwilling to fact check information on its own platforms.”

“News publishers call on the federal government to follow the Government of Ontario’s lead and support the home team by earmarking 25 per cent of their advertising budget to trusted news sources,” said Paul Deegan, president and CEO of News Media Canada.

“Now is the time to choose Canada,” Trudeau said Feb. 1.

Medical students coming to Viking to take in rural life Friday, March 14. They will arrive mid evening and are booked into the Viking Inn for the week-end. Friday night will be a simple welcome, refreshments and assignment to their rooms (with the advice to get some rest because Saturday will be a busy day!)

Saturday morning the students will travel by bus to the Viking Hospital where they will be greeted by Dr. Kate Overbo and a group of hospital staff who will take them, in five groups of six each, on a full rotation through the departments and services offered by our hospital. Following the morning hospital activities, the students will travel by bus to the Viking Carena for lunch. A group photo opportunity will be set up with the Viking Ship which will be parked at the Carena.

I am speaking now as a member of our local ARC (Attraction and Retention Committee) which works closely with our Viking Health Authority.

Our goal is to maintain, and even improve, the level of healthcare we enjoy in our community.

To that end, we have made an arrangement with RhPAP (Rural Health Professions Action Plan) to bring 30 students from Calgary University and Mount Royal College to Viking for a weekend of education and rural awareness.

Half of these students are medical students, and half are nursing students. We are intending to offer to them some attractive realities of living and practicing in rural Alberta.

To that end, these students will travel via bus from Calgary to Viking

After their noon lunch, the students will remain in their groups. Each group will be colour designated, and each colour group will be assigned to a van with a driver, host/hostess, all colour coordinated. As well, select ARC members, RhPAP members, and community members will be assigned to each of the vans. The afternoon will be a fast-paced, hectic afternoon.

The afternoon activity is being called Amazing Race Viking and will last up to- three hours. Each of the five vans will rotate through five locations (Carena, Museum, School, Community Hall and CN Train Station).

At each of these locations, the teams will be met by local volunteers who will lead them through some activities that will be fun, informative, challenging, and memorable, as well as fast

paced. I will not give away more of the exciting surprises to be revealedt at each of these five locations, and these students will take home many great photo memories of their time in Viking. This activity will run from after lunch to about 4:30 when all the teams will gather at the Viking Medical Clinic.

There will be a short break for students to return to the Viking Inn and freshen up for supper. A banquet will be held at the Community Hall that evening. Sunday morning the students will depart Viking and travel to Tofield where they will continue with a few community activities before returning to Calgary Sunday evening.

Career Fair Continued from Page 2 “We received especially good feedback regarding the breakout rooms in the morning,” said Chrystian. “These spaces allowed students to cycle through five different industry-specific rooms and speak with local individuals who often grew up in the area and were now working in the field.”

Each student was provided with a long list of contact information of these local individuals who participated in the fair, should they want more information on a specific career goal.

To pull it off, the event required students to participate, educators to facilitate, employers to elaborate and community members to organize.

Nearly 150 students in junior and senior high from Viking School and senior high from Holden Rural Academy explored career paths and the possibility and benefits of

living and working in rural areas.

This included receiving hands-on experiences and having conversations with local professionals.

“It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of our future workforce,” said Chrystian.

FCSS also stated that the career fair sponsors “appreciate the dedication of our exhibitors and speakers who took the time to share their knowledge and passion for rural careers.”

They were credited for helping to empower the next generation “to see the possibilities that exist right in their own back yard.”

“I’m grateful that so many Viking School alumni were able to join us and share their stories,” said Chrystian.

Seniors Centre book reading

The Viking Senior Centre Book Club hosted a book reading by former resident Colette Howery on Friday, Feb 21. Lois Soleski introduced Colette and decribed the book club and welcomed anyone to attend the regular meetings on Wednesdays. Marion Cottrell read a poem she had written for Colette to start the afternoon. Colette did a reading from her book then she and Ev Carrington did a brief exercise pertaining to the grief process. Coffee, tea, snacks and lots of visiting followed.

The hockey season is over for the Irma Aces after a 3-2 loss in Stettler on Friday and an overtime loss in Irma on Saturday evening.

The Stettler Imperials beat the Irma Aces in overtime on Sunday, Feb. 23 in Irma with a 5-4 final, bringing the series to 3-1 for the Imperials in the best of five series.

With a win in the first game, Stettler had tied the series with a win in the second, with the third matchup between the two taking place in Stettler on Friday, Feb. 21.

No details were available at press time, but the final was 4-2 Stettler, putting them ahead 2-1, making Sunday’s game in Irma do or die for the Aces.

On Sunday the two teams played to the end of the first period to a 1-1 tie, then the Aces went ahead 4-3 after the second period with three goals to Stettler’s two. A single in the third period from the Imperials tied it up 4-4, forcing an overtime period. Stettler scored in O/T to take the game, and the series.

The Aces thanked all their fans and sponsors for the terrific support throughout the season after the game.

Elsewhere in the league, the Hughenden Jets and Oyen Eagles are tied at one win each, forcing a final game that took place Tuesday, Feb. 25 after press time.

In the Sedgewick Sabres and Wainwright Rustlers series, the Rustlers won game two in the series, then lost two straight. Saturday’s 3-0 win for the Sabres in Wainwright knocked the

Rustlers out of the playoffs in their first year in the league.

The Provost vs. Delburne series went just three games as the Combines eliminated the Outlaws in three games straight.

Local gymnast Paisley Merta brings home multiple medals Dana Andreson Local gymnast Paisley Merta and her family went with Wainwright Gymnastics Club and headed to sunny Florida for the club’s 6th International Travel Meet on February 14-16.

The Magical Classic, hosted by Brown’s Gymnastics, was held in the Orlando World Centre Marriott.

This meet had over 2,700 gymnasts from around the world attending.

This was their biggest team to date to take on such an adventure with 15 gymnasts attending and four coaches including Paisley's Grandma Dana and her Auntie Jorja.

This type of meet is easily four times the size of a meet she would attend in Alberta. They run four gyms at the same time with two sets of equipment in each one.

This is a great opportunity for these gymnasts to get to experience a competition of such magnitude. Paisley had a great competition coming home with multiple medals. A highlight of the weekend was Paisley and her Xcel Silver team winning a team award.

It’s the first time the club has won a team award at an international meet.

Following the meet many families enjoyed the sunshine and a little

vacation before heading home. Next up for our team is back to training to finish off many more competitions around Alberta over the next few months.

County concerned weight restriction on 834 will cause damage Patricia Harcourt County officials are expressing outrage over the province’s move to delay a bridge replacement on Secondary Highway 834 south of Hwy. 14 for two more years.

The decision means there will be long-term weight restrictions placed on 834 south of Township Road 492 near Round Hill which will place a heavy burden on county roads as overweight traffic is diverted to keep the heavier loads moving.

The county roads in the area will now have to take on the burden of the over weight trucks that normally take the 834 on their journeys south. This rerouting is expected to last for a period of two years at this stage.

Weight restrictions for the bridge crossing over Amisk Creek are 11tonnes for a single truck, 19 tonnes for a semi trailer, and 25 tonnes for a Btrain.

“All trucks exceeding these weight restrictions are required to use alternate routes,” states Alberta Transportation.

Beaver County Council met in closed session Feb. 19 to discuss the issue and decide on a course of action.

Reeve Kevin Smook confirmed that a letter has been sent to Transportation and Economic Corridors Minister Dave Dreeshen “about our concerns with the weight restrictions on the 834

bridge south of Township Road 492.

“The restriction impacts our local economy for our farmers and producers and others who use that transportation route,” said Smook. “We’re asking them to find a short-term solution to restore the bridge to its intended weight capacity in advance of the likely bridge replacement in the future.”

Copies of the letter with its request have also been sent to Camrose Riding MLA Jackie Lovely and MLA for Maskwacis-Wetaskiwin Rick Wilson.

“We are seeking their support in finding a solution to this issue which has a big impact on Beaver County,” said the Reeve.

The county posted the weight restrictions imposed on the 834 by Alberta Transportation on its website, noting that “This is not a county road but we will share any updates from the province on a resolution or detour options as soon as we receive them.”

Division 2 Councillor Lionel Williams spoke of his disapproval of a two-year bridge restriction.

“That’s crazy,” he said. “I suggest having everyone you know that will be impacted to call Jackie Lovely.

“I will also be calling Jackie because this is out of line with any logic,” he said.

And the county has confirmed that the bridge replacement, which was supposed to take place last year, has been postponed to happen at the earli-

est possible date in 2026.

Reasons cited for the delay are related to funding, permits and utilities issues, said Williams, who represents Division 2 where the bridge delay is located.

Alberta Transportation is planning a detour route using the 833 in an effort to minimize traffic on county roads.

This reroute “could strain our bridges and road maintenance resources,” said Williams.

Debra Juke was appointed the county’s Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer and General Manager of Community and Protective Services at the county’s Feb. 19 meeting.

Mitchell Knudson was appointed as a Bylaw Enforcement Officer.

County approves five-year plan to improve its two campgrounds Patricia Harcourt Beaver County Council put its stamp of approval on a five-year campground strategy for Camp Lake and Black Nugget Lake.

Council passed a motion by Councillor Dale Pederson (Division 5) to approve the Campground Improvement Strategy for 2025-2030, This would include phased-in improvements to both campgrounds.

The county owns and operates Camp Lake in the eastern end of the county and leases from the province the land on which Black Nugget Lake is situated further to the west.

“Both campgrounds are key assets in the county’s recreational portfolio by attracting residents and visitors with

unique outdoor experiences,” said Blackie, in his report to council Feb. 19.

“We have wanted a campground strategy for years,” said Reeve Kevin Smook (Division 1).

“Beaver County should be proud of the work done on this.” he added, after the motion was passed.

Blackie gave an account of the campgrounds and the need for these improvements: “Over the past four years Camp Lake has experienced a significant decline in occupancy and revenue due to aging infrastructure and limited modern amenities,” he said. “Black Nugget Lake, however, has maintained stable occupancy rates but requires investments to meet evolving visitor expectations.”

Council approves request for gravel Patricia Harcourt Beaver County granted a request from the Tofield Agricultural Society for a gravel donation.

County Council approved a donation of 70 cubic yards of 7/8 inch gravel to the Tofield Agricultural Society.

The gravel is to be used for Tofield Rodeo Grounds. The donation is also “subject to the society reimbursing the county for trucking costs for delivery to the Tofield Arena.”

The request came last October from the society’s president, with the explanation of replacing the gravel in the rodeo grounds, stated Dan Blackie, General Manager of Infrastructure, in

his report of Feb. 29.

“The letter indicated that the society would ask the county to haul the gravel; however, it would pay for that service,” he added.

He outlined the rules of the Sale of Gravel Supplies Policy, with the policy stating that the community group should submit a written request.

Council makes a decision based on funding and scheduling with the road maintenance program.

The $1,700 cost of the gravel can be accommodated in this year’s interim budget. The cost of hauling the gravel, which the society will reimburse, was estimated at $1,680.

To meet these challenges, a comprehensive campground improvement strategy was developed. For the next five years there would be enhancements phased into the campgrounds.

The goal is to “modernize both campgrounds, attract a broader demographic, and ensure long-term financial sustainability,” said Blackie.

He provided highlights of the enhancements for both campgrounds, including aeration of the water at Camp Lake.. Other improvements would be outhouses, site servicing, cabins, enhanced play facilities, and cook shacks.

At Black Nugget Lake, there would be an addition of outhouses, geo domes, natural gas servicing, enhanced play facilities including rentals, site servicing and cook shacks.

He also said that administration would have to start to secure funding grants and contacting local contractors for cost estimates.

With this done, “Beaver County can move forward with its campground improvement strategy ensuring both Camp Lake and Black Nugget Lake continue to develop as attractive and sustainable recreational destinations.”

He estimated the cost of the improvements over the next five years to be $4 million. The money would be financed through the municipal budgets, grants

and partnerships.

“Efforts will focus on securing external funding to offset major costs,” said Blackie. Estimates were also provided for each campground in each of the five years of the plan.

Blackie added that this information would be posted on the county’s website upon approval.

“The more grants we get the less pressure there will be on council to find the money,” he noted. And his suggestion that the county could partner with the “dark skies”observatory was picked up quickly by Blackie, who said administration would be discussing the possibility in future.

“That’s why we’re looking to put geo domes out there,” he said.

Councillor Lionel Williams (Division 2) asked Blackie about the kind of outhouses that would be used. Blackie said these would be self-contained structures on skids with no tanks in the ground.

“We can move them around,” he said. “They come with solar panels on the roof, and LED lights inside and outside.”

And they are rustic looking, he said.

“They are very nice outhouses.”

A reader provided photos on Monday of four coyotes that had been killed by gunshot and had their carcasses dumped in a ditch near Viking. While coyote hunting itself is not illegal on private land in Alberta, and is done to control populations, they are often hunted with landowner permission for the valuable pelts.

According to the Alberta Professional Outfitters Society, winter is a prime season for coyotes when pelts are "thick and well furred." The reader, who asked not to be named, described the four dumped bodies as "senseless" and "wasteful."

Wild boars, also known as feral pigs, are not native to Alberta but have been at large in the province since the 1980s when they escaped from a livestock operation and continually reproduced. Programs have been established to help control the wild boar population in Alberta, of which Beaver County is partnered in.

The boar’s aggressive nature and adaptability make them particularly difficult to control. They have become an invasive pest in the province as they are known to disrupt native wildlife populations by competing for food and space, and the destruction of agricultural crops is a growing concern.

“In 2024, we received 75 reports across the province, and 31 were confirmed to be escaped domestic pigs. We received five reports from Beaver County, all of which were determined to be either escaped domestic pigs or deer. To our knowledge, there are no established populations of wild boar in Beaver County,” Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation Wild Boar Program Specialist Hannah McKenzie stated.

“We have initiated a wild boar monitoring project in which Beaver County is participating. The project is a collaboration between Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, Alberta Parks, Alberta Pork Producers, Elk Island National Park, Strathcona County, Lamont County, Beaver County, and the University of Calgary’s Wild Pig Project.

“The goal of the project is to gather data about wild boar presence and distribution in the area in and around Elk Island National Park and Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area to better understand the extent of the problem and make our control efforts more successful.

We have set up remote cameras in the

parks and on surrounding private property with permission from participating landowners. We are in the early stages of the project but look forward to sharing the results in the future,” McKenzie went on to say.

McKenzie said wild boar can be very destructive to agriculture, and impacted farmers are able to get crop insurance for wild boar damage through Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC).

“They can damage crops and pastures through rooting and trampling, as well as direct consumption of all life stages of the plants from planting to harvest. Their rooting can also cause large ruts and uneven ground in fields, which creates a hazard for farm equipment.

“Farmers can access crop insurance for wild boar damage through the AFSC’s Wildlife Damage Compensation Program.

In addition to damage to crops and pasture, wild boar can also transmit diseases to livestock and humans,” McKenzie said.

McKenzie said they work with trappers in order to manage wild boars, as hunting is not an effective method.

“Although we have a long history of managing other wildlife through recreational hunting, hunting is not an effective tool for controlling wild boar. Instead, we work with professional trappers contracted through Alberta Pork who capture entire sounders, or groups, of wild boar.

This approach avoids educating any wild boar, which results in them becoming warier, nocturnal, and much more difficult to capture,” McKenzie said.

“We encourage anyone who sees wild boar sign or sightings to ‘Squeal on Pigs!’ by emailing wildboar@gov.ab.ca, calling 310-FARM, online at alberta.ca/reportwild-boar, or talking to their municipality.

Public reports help us to protect Alberta from wild boar, and we follow up on all reports,” McKenzie finished off by saying.

However, nobody was present for this part of the hearing, and Chief Administrative Officer Doug Lefsrud confirmed there were no written submissions.

“I feel supported in this based on the survey results,” he said. The town put out a survey with only 10 per cent response.

However, most of those responding were not opposed to the bylaw’s intent of try-

ing to clean up derelict and abandoned properties in the Town of Viking.

Once the public hearing was closed, council proceeded to pass all three readings of the bylaw at one sitting.
