Gordie Enghoj tribute fundraiser planned for arena lobby renos mittee members have obtained sponsorship for each one of the painted jerseys, already raising $24,000 for the project before the event, planned for April 26, even starts.

Kinzer says that the Killam Wheat Kings team have offered to help with the event, as have the senior rec team, the Barley Kings, who have donated cash for silent auction items, as well as a special “Gordie” beer can, specially designed through Detention Brewery, which will be sold and served at the event.

Kinzer says, “Anyone who uses the arena building has been asked to help out.”

Planned renovations to the lobby include the mural, flooring, walls, trophy cases, and the ceiling.

Kinzer says the group is working off the Agriplex’s five-year capital plan which has some

substantial repair and maintenance projects.

“Our event is raising funds for the lobby part only.”

She says the committee has received a lot of pos-

itive feedback, and support. Committee members are compiling a history of Enghoj’s life in Killam, looking for photos and stories to display during the tribute event.

For anyone who grew up in Killam or played hockey in Killam, Gordie Enghoj was a common name and face.

Enghoj was a lifelong resident of Killam who contracted polio at age two. It didn’t kill him, but left him with damage to his brain, and other physical afflictions that left him in chronic pain for the rest of his life.

He couldn’t go to school, but he taught himself to ride a bicycle, and would run errands for people and businesses in the town.

Enghoj also volunteered his time at a number of places, especially the arena, where he learned to skate, and which he and his father helped the community to build.

He was a frequent fixture at the Agriplex, helping in the bowling lanes, swimming pool, and the arena.

Hockey was his special game. He travelled with Killam’s Senior Men’s team, the Indians, where he was given the honourary ‘Team Manager’ title.

When that team folded, Enghoj turned his attention to the Killam Jr. B Wheat Kings, who to this day call him their “Number 1 fan,” and honour him in their program each year.

For both teams, he ran errands, he handled equipment, but most importantly, he offered inspiration.

And whenever the little ones showed up to skate, he’d be there helping out however he could, and supporting and encouraging young skaters.

Enghoj spent his entire life battling against chronic pain and physical obstacles, but it never stopped him from pitching in wherever and whenever he could. During his lifetime in Killam he put in thousands upon thousands of hours of community service.

When Heritage Park underwent an extreme makeover in 2010, the

As part of extensive arena renovations that will be happening this spring and summer, with the roof replacement at the arena, work is also planned for the dressing rooms, and the main arena lobby. Kinzer says a special evening has been planned in Enghoj’s honour, including a supper with live and silent auctions to raise funds for lobby renovations.

There are also plans in the works for a mural in the renovated lobby to honour Enghoj. The mural will be like looking through the glass at the ice surface, with 24 honourary jerseys hanging from the rafters, and Enghoj at centre ice.

ACE committee was given the task of naming the new bike park, and they dedicated it to Enghoj on the occasion of his 80th birthday, saying, “Gordie is not only a friend to all Killamites, but he is also a role model for our children, and when they are on the Bike Park playing with their peers, they will read the sign of dedication to Gordie and realize anything is possible with hard work and perseverance.”

So when Carol Kinzer of Killam was asked to head a fundraising committee for an arena lobby renovation that included renaming it to “Gordie’s Den,” this year she couldn’t say no, she says.

“When Gordie passed during COVID, we couldn’t honour him as he properly deserved, so this is something we can do to preserve his memory,” she says. “We can

Why won't Ottawa shop Canadian? Letter: Payment programs need revisit Amid all the calls to shop Canadian in the wake of threatened U.S. tariffs in the past two weeks, including an impassioned plea from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, you’d expect the federal government to be the last organization to be buying American products when Canadian ones are available.

But that’s exactly what they’re doing when it comes to advertising.

CTV News revealed last week that the Privy Council Office - basically, the central agency of the federal government, which reports directly to the Prime Minister - allocated up to $100,000 in advertising on Facebook and Instagram to pitch the government’s GST holiday campaign to Canadian consumers.

This ill-informed tax break has had next to no impact on the Canadian economy - if anything, it has been more of a pain for retailers to implement than a benefit to them - and should have been allowed to die a quiet death.

But if the government insists on shoving its failed policy into the face of consumers, you’d think it would use Canadian companies to do so, especially right now.

The federal government has been addicted to social media advertising for years, spending more than $53 million on social from 2019 to 2023. That is about 20 per cent of its entire ad budget, compared to less than two per cent for print media in the last fiscal year.

It took Meta’s draconian decision to pull news from the feeds of Canadian users in the summer of 2023 for Ottawa to suspend its spending with Meta. Better late than never, we suppose.

But to turn the tap back on, with Meta still at open war with Canadian media? In the midst of an impending trade war with the United States? When its CEO is openly sucking up to the man who launched that trade war and making its platform even more open to disinformation by turning off fact-checking? It's not just nonsensical, it's hypocritical.

We don’t fault Canadians for using social media - there isn’t a viable alternative to it (yet).

But the federal government has thousands of choices to reach citizens with its messages: local media outlets. And citizens want to see those messages in their local media.

According to a new survey just published by Totum Research, 65 per cent of Canadians want the federal government to commit a percentage of its advertising budget to Canadian news media.

And it’s not just because they’re Canadian; it’s because they trust the ads they see there.

According to the survey, 63 per cent of Canadians trust advertising in newspapers and their online platforms, while just 28 per cent trust ads they see on Facebook/Instagram. More than half of those surveyed (58 per cent) said newspapers and news sites are their preferred medium to receive information about federal government programs and initiatives, while only 17 per cent chose Facebook/Instagram.

“The Government of Canada’s decision to resume advertising with Meta is a real kick in the shins to independent publishers across Canada,” said Dave Adsett, publisher of the Wellington Advertiser and chair of News Media Canada. “Disinformation travels faster than the truth, and it sends the wrong signal to local advertisers when the government is rewarding a company that is unwilling to fact check information on its own platforms.”

“News publishers call on the federal government to follow the Government of Ontario’s lead and support the home team by earmarking 25 per cent of their advertising budget to trusted news sources,” said Paul Deegan, president and CEO of News Media Canada.

“Now is the time to choose Canada,” Trudeau said Feb. 1.

We couldn’t agree more. Now do it, prime minister.

To the Editor: Whilst the Trump Tornado rips through the mendacity and sludge of various U.S. government departments notably: USAID - Canada's blandly named Transfer and Equalization Payment scams continue unexamined.

Enshrined in the Constitution, this stealing of money from those Provinces producing it only to reward those unable or unwilling to reach that same mark is the very definition of the Marxist screed: "To each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." The obviously inherent weakness of that statement is in its very wording; to wit: define 'ability'; define 'needs'.

Case in point: Alberta vs Quebec equalization imbalance. It appears that while Alberta has the proven ability to generate money by applying intelligent use of its resources and skilled labour force, it is never enough to satisfy Quebec's always undefined and rapacious 'needs'. This year sees the latter receive some $13.47 Billion, or 54.5 per cent of the entire Equalization payouts, whereas Alberta?

- Zero!

Yet Alberta forks out approximately $16.3 Billion yearly to Ottawa.

From most recent accounting for the years 2007-2022, this Province shelled out $244.63 Billion which is five times that of the only other two provinces, B.C and Ontario, giving more than received under the mis-named Equalization Pro-

And all this to a Province continually threatening to leave Canada, [who] blocks pipeline passage, and remains fiercely unilingual. Talk about arrogantly biting the hand that feeds!

Alberta is the largest Equalization contributor to Ottawa's insatiable maw.

It must be noted, however, that in 2020, Alberta did receive, for the first time in its history, some $10.9 Billion, grudgingly, from Ottawa; this of course was result of the Province just recovering from the NDP's disastrous 2015-2019 reign of error. And no one runs up debt faster, with little to nothing to show for it, than the typical NDP tax and spenders.

Transfer Payments are another dog's breakfast deserved of exam in depth as it too is a scheme of imbalance of money flow. And accountability.

Quick to point finger to the current U.S. roil, as so many in Canada are, the home condition remains in similar state - unknown expenditures determined by unknown, unaccountable persons.

And it is this condition fueling the growing separation calls in this Province.

Alberta has long been (too long in this writer’s view) the open wallet for Canada. With paucity of return.

That Alberta faces crossroad of decision in determining its future direction is a certainty. And a topic needing further discussion.

The Sabres travelled to Wainwright on Saturday, Feb. 22, for the fourth game of that series, with a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five.

Sedgewick scored the only goal in the second, and two in the third to come away with a 3-0 win, giving goaltender Travis Child a playoff shutout.

Also on Saturday the Stettler Imperi-

als beat the Irma Aces in overtime to take that series, knocking Irma out for the season.

Provost won their series against Delburn in three straight wins, while the Hughenden Jets vs. Oyen Eagles series went to game five on Tuesday, Feb. 25, after press time.

Killam RCMP Detachment Report for the period of Friday, Feb. 7 to Thursday, Feb. 20 Friday, Feb. 7 Members were called out to a possible domestic dispute near Amisk. Situation was assessed and nothing criminal occurred.

Wednesday, Feb. 12 Complaint of a driver of a vehicle passed out in vehicle and blocking traffic.

Member located vehicle. MAS (Mandatory Alcohol Demand) made. Subject blew a zero.

Friday, Feb. 14 Member on active patrols discovered a semi blocking two lanes of traffic. Brakes had locked and the semi was broadside blocking Highway 36 in a dangerous location. Members maintained the scene with emergency lights. Vehicle was towed to the side of the road to be fixed.

A report of fraud under $5,000 was reported. Three online orders were made to a fraudulent company claiming to be Peavey Mart. File is still under investigation.

A Killam Member participated in a check stop on Highway 13. Subject was pulled over and open liquor containers in plain view. MAS (Mandatory Alcohol Demand) made. Subject blew a caution and

refused the roadside appeal. A three-day suspension was issued, the vehicle was towed and a fine for transporting liquor in vehicle when liquor is within easy access of an occupant was also issued.

Saturday, Feb. 15 A vehicle was reported blocking an alley way in Lougheed. Members attended. Unsuccessful attempts were made to contact the Registered Owner.

Vehicle was towed.

A complaint of break and enter to an unoccupied residence in Lougheed was made. Members attended. House was cleared. No signs of anyone being there.

Sunday, Feb. 16 A white Ford Expedition was reported stolen from the Killam Agri Plex arena.

Members patrolled the area. Surveillance possible from surrounding businesses.

Monday, Feb. 17 A suspicious vehicle was reported driving onto an oil lease site and setting off an alarm and then left. The vehicle was seen coming back but not leaving. Members attended. Vehicle not located.

Well hello folks. I bet you are in heaven to be experiencing the above freezing temperatures, the blue skies, and that wonderful sunshine?

Our numerous cats are all cuddled up on a pad on our deck and they are sun bathing.

Their bellies must be full because I see some guts laying beside them and some big feathers. I guess they had a wee bird snack.

Two of our momma cats are looking a bit chubby, yikes. I hope that bloated look is gas and not kittens. They will be so cold and I wonder if the tom cats will eat the kittens?

This Wednesday is “Pink Shirt Day,” also known as Anti-Bullying Day, Feb. 26. Remember to remind your children about the importance of being decent and being kind.

My sister sent me an interesting article from Brock University shining a light on the issues of bullying in Canada.

Canadians may be globally known for their politeness, but Brock University experts say bullying is a prominent issue impacting the nation.

Ann Farrell, assistant professor of Child and Youth studies, says that

Adults also need to realize that teens are always watching, they are taking cues on how to behave. So are we behaving well as adults, are we being decent and kind? I am afraid not always. Some time ago, maybe even two years ago, a friend came to my rescue when I was having trouble with the neckline on a dress when I was out at a function.

She put her lovely jeweled cat and mouse pin on the offending neckline. I discovered that it was still on the dress in my closet. I am blessed to have many good friends, and I can’t afford to lose even one so I would like to return the pin, but I can’t remember who lent it to me. If it is yours, please let me know.

The library has another paint night planned with a flower as the subject this time. It will be in the Valley Inn again. Michelle Hamilton-Herbert will be instructor again. It will cost $35. Call Lisa at the library to register again.

The Alliance Library has a Kids Garden Club in collaboration with the Alliance Community Garden. They have started some of the seeds already.

They still have some openings for children aged seven and up. There is no cost.

Tuesdays the library is open from noon to 6 p.m. with Thursdays remaining at the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. times. The annual report that goes to Parkland Regional Library system is in and I received a copy.

Interesting facts: 288 items added bring our collection in Alliance to 6,951.

There were 153 downloads of content, 1,059 checkouts. Alliance lent 2,488 items out to other libraries.

The Wi-Fi had 3,647 connections. Yet there are only 30 people who have a card at our library. Library membership in Alliance is free. What are you waiting for?

The Book Club meets on Tuesday at noon, last Tuesday of the month, at the library. We borrow our books rather than buy. We read two books since we haven’t met for some time.

Seven Days in June was one book and the other was Canadian Red. Library Manager Lisa has ordered another book club set for us. We would wel-

come more members.

Rev. Steve Haughland served communion after a sermon about heaven on earth. He took the “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” from the Lord’s prayer to remind us that it is up to us to do our best to improve ourselves and help create the heaven on earth as God planned.

After church I made my first trip this year to the Valley Ski Club. Now there is a bit of heaven on earth.

Bob and Sandra Brinkley have moved into the house across from the church. They used to live in Rocky Mountain House years ago before moving to southern Manitoba.

They are happy to be back in Alberta. They have family in Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan so they are right in the middle. I was telling them about some of the great local places and they had already checked out many of them. Welcome to Alliance.

There was a surveyor from Red Deer marking out an area just over an acre in size that is appar-

ently a road allowance just north of the access road to town which would be an extension of the road along by the elevators. He thinks that it will go up for sale.

Neighbours to the northwest have joined the ranks of in-laws.

We don’t get much news from Galahad since there is no correspondent to keep their community in the news in the paper.

Such a shame! I will share some of last week’s event with you.

A new father and mother in-law are Stuart and Joanne McMahon.

They gained this status when Cole married Erinn Jones. The wedding was at St. Peter’s Church between Forestburg and Strome, with the reception and dance at Galahad. Darcy Jahns catered the meal.

Guests enjoyed the emcees and heartfelt speeches then kept the dance floor packed all night.

Cole and Erinn will take a few days away before settling into life outside of Galahad.

In Sedgewick Ladies Afternoon Bowling, Verna Erickson had a great week, earning high single of 233, high triple of 584, and she also retains her hold on high average of 171.

The Alley Oops bowled team high single of +122, and high triple at +226, and sit atop the standings.

Jaki Sherman earned Bowler of the Week with a +76, and Ruth Lucki rolled three spares in a row, while Trish Bergseth rolled the TV shot.

In Mixed Bowling some new names popped up this week, with Danni Frost earning ladies high single with a 255, and Stacey Zaretski earning ladies high Triple at 533, which gave her Bowler of the Week at +65.

Andrew Sakaluk rolled men’s high single at 293, and Garry Klein shot mens high triple at a whopping 683, also earning Bowler of the Week at +85.

The 3 DJ’s rolled team high single at +186, and Babes and Balls held team high triple at +361.

Verna Erickson held on to her ladies high average of 176, and Garry Klein to

his mens high average of 204.

Spare Time has 84 points and tops the standings.

Rolling three strikes in a row were Darcy Eskra, Doug Jacobs, Garry Klein, Jason Backen, and Mitch Frost, and rolling a fantastic four strikes in a row were Bill Rose, Andrew Sakaluk, and Danni Frost.

Tyler Erickson rolled a whopping five spares in a row, while Dalton Wilson, Darcy Eskra, and Vanessa Hamermehl rolled three spares in a row each.

In Morning Adult Bowling, Sheila Tanton had a great week, earning ladies high single of 245, and high triple of 596. That also earned her Bowler of the Week at +90, and her three strikes and three

spares in a row didn’t hurt either!

Ian MacEachern rolled his way to mens high single at 241, also earning the mens Bowler of the Week title, rolling three strikes in a row, too.

Team Burden shone with team high single at +130, and team high triple of +255.

Verna Erickson maintained her ladies high average of 165, and Garry Klein his mens high average of 205. Team Klein also sits atop the standings with 93 points.

service is to be held Thursday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. at the Highland United Church in Edmonton. Harry is survived by his wife Hilda (Bagdan) and their five children. Harry was the last member of the George and Belle Cramton family.

On Sunday the skies were lit up in Bawlf for the postponed fireworks

Perfect weather for Killam Lions Snowmobile Rally Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam Lions Club hosted a snowmobile rally this past Saturday, Feb. 22 and had a perfect day weather wise for the event.

After the last few weeks of temperatures in the low 20s and 30s with high wind chills, it was a nice change for participants on Saturday to have the thermometer close to zero.

Killam Lions member Rick Krys says the event drew 110 different machines, whose riders purchased 170 hands.

High hand winner won $640 at the event, and low hand won

$330, as participants ride around and collect cards at designated checkpoints. Two wilds won $330 each.

Krys says the weather was probably the best they could have hoped for, and that the event really went very well.

He said the club really appreciated all the farmers who allowed the Lions to use their land on the rally route.

Riders made use of shops at Moser Farms and Coldstream Farms, along with a cabin owned by Terry Hamilton, and Krys says the Lions Club is extremely grateful to all three for allowing the event to use their buildings.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the Golden Prairie 4-H club held a meeting.

There were 16 members present. All members that were there answered the roll call: “What was your favourite thing you had for lunch at public speaking?”

Reports were given: Treasurer’s Report was presented. The secretary, Simone Eshpeter, read her minutes from the November meeting. New Business: The diary workshop was on Feb. 9 in

Forestburg, Tire Recycling is Saturday, March 1.

For our club trip the date is not decided yet. District public speaking is Saturday, March 8, in Lougheed. Regional Public speaking is Sunday, March 23, in Forestburg.

Our club is hosting the next District meeting this Wednesday at the Forestburg Train Station at 7 p.m.

Old Business: Public Speaking was held on Feb. 1 at the Forestburg School.

All members gave a speech or presented. Buskers did face painting at the Family Literacy Night at the Daysland

School Jan. 28.

Our projects for this year still are: Foods, Photography, Small Engines, Woodworking, Canine, Creative options (14+), Train modeling and Busk-

ing.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:41; the next meeting will be held Wednesday, March 12 at the Forestburg Train Station.

Students in medical fields visit Flagstaff County Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Over the past weekend, Friday, Feb. 21, to Sunday, Feb. 23, Flagstaff County hosted a ‘Let’s Go Rural’ event for Red Deer Polytechnic allied health students.

Students rolled into town on Friday, in time to have dinner and check into their hotel in Killam.

Saturday started early with a trip to

Daysland Hospital, where local professionals led the students through a number of workshops, including time in the ambulance, emergency room, and operating room where scopes and colonoscopies are done.

A special dinner event was held Saturday evening at the Killam Community Hall, planned by host group, the Flagstaff Healthcare Attraction and Retention Committee (FIHAR). The evening featured keynote speaker Dr. Lisa Bélanger, a behavioural change expert and researcher.

The evening also included a showcase of local health-care focussed videos.

Sunday was another busy day, this time students were hosted at the Killam Health Care Centre for another series of

workshops with local healthcare professionals, before heading off to bowling at the Galahad Community Centre for some bowling and lunch.

The Let’s Go Rural events, which are organized and designed through the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP) aim to introduce students to the dynamic world of rural healthcare while showcasing the myriad of local opportunities available.

Students participating in the event have expressed interest in working in rural healthcare.

Red Deer Polytechnic students visit the Daysland Emergency Room where they get to speak to local healthcare professionals, like Emily Herder, above, about what working in a rural setting is actually like.

Peace Officer Zelinski receives Award of Excellence Leslie Cholowsky Editor

At the Alberta Association of Community Peace Officers held in Lake Louise in early February, long-time Flagstaff County Peace Officer Skyler Zelinski received the Association’s Award of Excellence.

The Award is meant to recognize Zelinski’s “unwavering committment, professionalism, and service to our community,” says Flagstaff County.

Zelinski has been a Flagstaff County Peace Office since 2010.

During his time at Flagstaff County, he created the Flagstaff County Farm Truck Inspection, made possible through his special training and expertise, which allows community members to have their farm vehicles inspected before seeding season.

Zelinski also takes advantage of any invitation to interact positively with youth, whether that’s reading to playschool and kindergarten classes, planning and teaching at bike rodeos, or through the Positive Ticket

Program, another initiative he brought to the region.

Zelinski issued 42 positive tickets to youth in 2024, in the program that “recognizes and rewards youth in the community for their safety and good deeds.”

In a nomination from Daysland School for the award, Principal Wes Wilson said, “Skyler is a visible and proactive presence in and around our school, which has greatly enhanced our students’ sense of safety and connection to the community.

“He has gone above and beyond in his duties.”

Zelinski also has served the community of Daysland as a volunteer firefighter for many years, as Deputy Chief at the Daysland Station. He also volunteers at community events such as his children’s baseball team practices and games.

Zelinski represents Flagstaff County at many events taking place throughout the region, including community parades, laying a wreath at Remembrance Day, and participating in Charity Checkstops.

Zelinski is also a devoted husband and father of three.

100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County exceed donations of a quarter-million dollars in sixth year Leslie Cholowsky Editor As the 100+ Women Who Care in Flagstaff County held the second meeting of their sixth year of operations, it wasn’t just special because it was their annual February ‘Share the Love’ event, which allowed for more groups to take home smaller donations. It was also the night the group was expected to meet a cumulative donation total of over a quarter-million dollars.

At the special meeting, held in Lougheed on Tuesday, Feb. 18, there were eight different groups nominated to present, and four of those were voted in as the winners of a shared pot of $10,900 into $2,700 each.

The eight groups making presentations to the membership on Tuesday were the Alliance Community Gardens; Forestburg’s Buckin’ in the Burg, Canine Love Dog Sanctuary, Flagstaff Historical Society, Heisler Archery Club, Killam Legion Branch #65, Lougheed Library, and Sedgewick Playschool.

The four lucky winners were the Killam Legion, the Sedgewick Playschool, Alliance Community Gardens,

and the Lougheed Library.

The Legion will be using the funds to complete their chairlift project and improve accessibility, and the other three groups will be using the funds to further their programs.

The group held a very special photo shoot after the cheque presentations to celebrate hitting the $250,000 milestone, by throwing confetti, candy loonies, and gold necklaces.

The group has actually given out $256,300 to 42 different groups.

Co-founder Holly Bovencamp, one of the three original founders along with Joanne McMahon and Tanya Piche, says the club is also extremely grateful to local businesses whose help makes every event, held in a rotation around the entire region, very special.

Now that the group has hit $250,000 in donations, they’ve got their eyes on also hitting 200 members.

The idea is that the 100 Women Who Care in Flagstaff County meet four times a year, donating $100 at each meeting, with a total cost of $400 per year.

Membership can be individuals or teams. Team mem-

bers split the cost of the $100 due each meeting, but only get one vote when deciding who gets the money.

As of the group’s October 2024 meeting, they were “181 women strong!”

Members nominate different groups for each of the four meetings held each year, and the steering committee normally pulls three nominations from those received to make presentations.

Presentations are made on an equal playing field, with all nominees given the same amount of time to speak to the group to try to elicit votes. Once all three nominees have spoken, members vote to decide who receives the funding from that meeting.

Two of the meetings, like this February, have multiple nominees splitting the pot. As Bovencamp explains, “Some groups don’t need $10,800, but they can do an awful lot with $2,500.” The membership held a vote and decided that at least once a year, they will give out smaller amounts.
